Highly recommend the LightPix Labs Q20II. The biggest issue I had with using a flash was how people would react on the street, after Robin gave me a kick up the ass a few times in Taiwan. I found out that people are fine with it and like he said some of the time you even get a smile :)
SUPER informative. I've always been a fan of slower shutter speeds for live music, etc., but shooting during the day with a flash will be a new thing for me. Thanks for the nudge. Cheers!
This video has given me the kick up the arse I needed to order this. I use a flash in my bar but it's a Godox V860ii and is very big. I want to use directional flash too but it's too awkward with this flash. Great photos too
Thank you, Robin! As always very helpful and inspiring! I really like the results and will give it a try. Although it will scare me to go out of my Comfortzone! Cheers Helmut
@@Florian_Brandt Hi! Das geht mir genauso! Love the shot at 8:02 Robin! Photographers think everyone cares what camera they’re using, if they’re using flash, if they’re using a zoom or not, etc etc. Nobody cares. I’ve walked around midtown Manhattan taking street photos with a dslr, a flash in my left hand connected by a coiled ttl cable, lol. Nobody cares. It’s all in your head.
Flash just seems like a personal choice. That said, as a person viewing the photos, I don't find the flash as distracting in night photos as day photos. At night there are various artificial light sources so flash can be subtle. But during the day, even when it is used in subtle ways it is hard to ignore. I understand that some people are happy to eschew "natural" looks and just want to light the subjects, and it works for them, and sometimes for me as the viewer. 👍 for a video that made me think about how I might be able to work in a flash under the right conditions.
Very good piece of photography I clicked like button because - I was like: hmm nice guy, but this video could be little better (on very beggining) let's cheer him up to better work, then I realised that your photos are greate
my minolta only syncs at 1/60 but i found out that the on time of the flash in manual is 1/500 so if i set the the camera at 1/1000 it still works. so check the manual of the flash, it can help you if you are stuck with just one setting! awesome video! thanks!
I was on photo walk in Philadelphia for candid street portraits and I used this same flash. No one reacted negatively. Most people carried on like it never happened. One person wanted to know why I took his photograph and I said “street portraits.” Nothing happened.
Great video (as always)! Anyhow, I really would be interessted in how you use the flash with your M6 - I have the same combo but never used it since I could not find any information on how to use the flash in combination with a non-TTL M6 in the right way. A basic tutorial based on your experience with a few examples would be great just to get a few more basic infos for all us newbies out there. Thanks Robin!
Thanks for your opinion on using a flash. That was very helpful. I'm very interested in the human factor because I still don't have the courage to get close to people. How do you do it after photographing someone on the street? Do you smile at the person? Or do you turn away immediately and move on?
which color gel were you using for the picture at 8:02? You mentioned the orange gel but in this case the reflections on the skin look more bluish? thanks!
I never care of flash until recently I just want to pick one up for my M6, plus I'm picking up a X100V thinking why not get a stronger flash. But right when I'm interested, it's sold out everywhere lol.
Hello Robin, I am Johnny from Taiwan and using fujifilm TX-1 and Leica M4-P to shoot street photography, I wonder if the flash Q20II can work on my cameras or any suggestions? By the way I really like your vedios. Than you !
Using a flash would, I think, completely upset my approach to photographing people on the street. I think you take the best 'street' portraits of any photographer I know of - living or dead. The fact that you're fearless is the bigger part of that I'm sure, but your use of a flash certainly helps. I try to expose for a person's face, nothing else, not their clothes, not their background. All I can say is that in my street portraits my subjects' faces are (usually) properly exposed, but nothing else. My using a flash would cure that effect.
Bruce Gilden is the master! You may not like him, his style, his pictures, but he put his art first and never allowed anyone to tell him how to do his craft. He was a huge inspiration to me. Whenever someone was rude or some Karen decided to tell me only she knew the law and that photography was totally illegal unless you got her approval and signature, I thought of Bruce and smiled.
You have a great advantage using a small body Leica and small flash enabling you to hold the camera in one hand and the flash in the other! I would not be able to do that with my big and heavy canon DSLR with a battery grip and my big and really powerful canon 580 mark II flash! As for the question to use a flash or not I honestly don't have en energy to argue this in a world stopped by a virus, maybe when we get out of this virus mess I would spend more time thinking about it but not at the moment! Keep up the good work!
Good video. However I am not a fan of overexposed skin due to flash light like on the face of the gentleman at 7:56 so maybe extra diffusion is better. A good way to do that is with a Flashbender (to keep it portable). Maybe you could do a video using a compact led light instead (or together with) of a flash light in the evening (most of the time the leds are not bright enough to overpower daylight) to see the difference. Anyway, thanks for sharing !!
If you want to avoid specular highlights like this then you need to use a rather huge soft box. Actually, it would be really funny to use a studio strobe and a 90cm Octabox for street. :D A video light might be more distracting and might draw too much attention. I guess someone probably has done that already. I think I'd rather use a flash?
@@therealsirrobin Try the flashbender, take the bigger one, great for street , not that obtrusive, and you can bend it to beam the light, although it will not take the specs completely away, it will reduce it to an acceptable proportion.
Its probably the whole Bruce Gilden thing as you mentioned. He's a very polarising guy, im not a fan of his personally but to each his own. You seem to able to do it in a way that doesn't seem as rude. I wouldn't do it if you paid me a million dollars though I'm a bit of a pussy like that.

Nice work, Robin. Very informative, and that flash unit looks great!
Thank you very much Hashem! Do u ever use flash when shooting film?
@@therealsirrobin I do! but I haven't really done it much when shooting street.
Totally agree. I also use that litle flash after see your review and I must say It s incredible useful for street photography. A big hug!
Thank you! :)
Thanks for visiting my Country, Cambodia, Phnom Penh 🙏🏻😍🙏🏻
I like the results. I need to try this! Thanke Schön for the vid.

I tried for the first time tonight, less people noticed than taking photos without the flash bc they just assumed it was an accident lol

In Deutschland ist die Streetfotografie mit Blitz eine echte Mutprobe. Würde ich mich niemals trauen. LG

Yes, it is often those false beliefs that are holding people back. 👌

andgainingspeed, during the day you should use fill flash. Most modern cameras do that automatically.
Not everyone has to like, that's totally fine! :)
Good discussion. I like the artificial look sometimes, where the flashed subject looks pasted on. It is alien, unsettling. Funny even.
Hi, the colour gel have a layer of plastic film that you're instructed to peal off before you use it. Maybe that is why it melted?
Very good piece of photography

That often depends on the power setting of the flash. The flash duration might me much shorter with with half power or less.

Hi Pat! I use it in the same way like with the Q. The only thing that you have to keep in mind is the max sync speed.

In america flash is violence. Great video.
Gorilla Biscuits? Man is into hardcore? Niiiice
I guess it depends, I mean it's a fine line of photography ethics.

What filter setting are you using with your GRIII?

Hello thank you for the review!! My question is posible shoot on P mode with this manual flash?? A have a ricoh gr and fujifilm x100f thank uou
Can be a different story on the streets of NYC or Philadelphia. People can be less understanding.
is this flash allows to use rear curtain synch? i cant find this information anywhere.. thanks!

Which filmrolls did you use for the pics that you have made in this video?
Will the Fujifilm XE4 be able to produce similar flash photos with its flash sync?

Hey Robin, what batteries other then the black Panasonic ones do you use with the Q20?
Only those or I pick up some random ones when I am on the go and the rechargeable ones die.
Like 😊
What people think may have some things to do with the general attitude of their location. In Philadelphia, this may not float.
What colour gel you use?
Look like orange CTO???
Interesting concept but pretty much all hack photos.
have you ever tried to use a reflector in street photography?
That’s a wild idea.😁
No but feel free to give it a try. :D
