Hello, thank you for this video. Impressive what can be done. I am using a Matek F765-Wing with X8R receiver and Jumper T16 transmitter. It took me some time but I figured it out with a lot of google and forums. On the F765-Wing there is no need for the external circuit, the Smart Port data cable plugs on Tx7 on the F765-Wing which is SERIAL1 in Arduplane. The settings that work without the need of the external circuit are SERIAL1_BAUD = 57; SERIAL1_OPTIONS = 7; SERIAL1_PROTOCOL = 10. With that it worked straight away. From what I read this is not a common feature on FCs yet to be able to set half-duplex and inverted TX and RX. Thank you for your videos !!!! Its a great help for someone that just starts in the RC world.

This gave me an hour or two (or maybe 3) of runarounds, on my Omnibus F4 Pro telemetry is on Serial 2!!! But a big thanks for this video Lee, have been meaning to add this to a model for ages, have always relied upon the osd before. but i love the way this allows the f/c to announce what mode it is in. Had a few instances in the past where my Taranis announced that i had set the switch to a certain mode, only to find that the flight controller had not done it for some reason. A few times in the past i have switched to loiter - thinking my craft was happily hovering stationary waiting for me, only to watch it drift away still in Stabilize! Easily done if your not paying attention to the osd. So yes, i love the way with this it is the actual f/c dictating what message is played.

Thanks Lee, this is a much more up to date, and cheaper way to achieve this compared to the older method I used with an APM 2.6 fc linked to a $30 teensy board running Athertop firmware to send telemetry back to the radio Rx. I also needed a $10 minim osd board as well. The setup you are describing in this series is a much neater way of providing the same info. the Tx screen info is helpful, but even with the FPV goggles on it helps when your radio Tx voice tells you when you've reached "max height", " 500m distance", etc. Thanks again.

The cool Yaapu telemetry script requires the flight controller firmware to support the FrSky passthrough protocol (as mentioned in this video) in order to feed it to the ground over a s.port connection. This is supported in Ardupilot, but not certain that this is available in iNav. There is a separate project which uses a Teensy micro controller to convert Mavlink telemetry into FrSky Passthrough (found here: www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?3089648-Mavlink-To-FrSky-Passthrough-Converter) which can be used on flight controllers which can provide full Mavlink v1 (or v2) telemetry (which have no FrSky passthrough option natively - such as pixhawk running px4), but again not sure if iNav can be configured to send Mavlink (at least not full mavlink streams containing all the sensor info needed by the aforementioned project).

After watching all your Ardupilot videos, I've been inspired to try it myself and in the process found out that you can now use the yaapu script without any extra hardware. If you're willing to do the uninvert hack on your smart port port output for your receiver and if you're willing to use the latest 3.10 nightly build, there's an option called SERIALx_OPTIONS which will allow you to configure a serial port to handle the half duplex uninverted signal directly. The settings are at the bottom of this page www.mateksys.com/?portfolio=f405-wing#tab-id-6 for setting up ordinary smart port telemetry - or if you want pass-thru telemetry for use with the yaapu script, you just need to change SERIALx_PROTOCOL from 4 to 10.

Painless...on a Pixhawk, yes, a person needs a "translator" cable that takes arducopter telemetry coming off the "telem 1" port on the Pixhawk (telem 2, and telem 4/5 also work), but on my Kakute F7, (and I'm thinking all the other F4/F7 boards?), THERE IS NO NEED FOR A CABLE. In my setup, I simply connected a wire straight from a UART port on the Kakute (I think I'm using UART/SERIAL 3) to the SPORT pin on the receiver. The other thing is you do not have to "discover sensors" unless you want to show the telemetry data outside of the yaapu script (on other pages)...if you are strictly using the yaapu script for all your telemetry, "discover sensors" is not necessary (though it doesn't hurt anything, so there's no harm in doing so).

@@Painless360 Not that I know of. There have been attempts to make OpenTx run on Flysky FS-i6. Although there is some good custom firmware that opens up more channels and more, there is no OpenTx for this radio. Some people seem have to been able to make parts of the code to run. Others have used the FS-i6 for their arduino based OpenTx radio. This is interesting of course, but then we have the philosophical question, is it an FS-i6 radio anymore? Smartphone with MAVLink is not as lightweight, but a viable solution.

You can get basic telemetry from flight controllers onto flysky with a similar diode based connection, but only the values flysky pre-defined for their hardware sensors. And if I recall, it's only possible with the older receivers, not the newer x6b.
Also, the only attempt I know of for OpwnTX was on the i6x, which has a completely different CPU.
