  • From Bobby's one hour show "The Bobby Darin Amusement Company" which premiered on NBC on July 27, 1972 and ran until his death in December of 1973.
"Alone Again (Naturally)" is a song by Irish singer--songwriter Gilbert O'Sullivan. It was released in 1972, and in total spent six weeks, non-consecutively, at #1 on the United States Billboard Hot 100 singles chart. In Casey Kasem's American 'Top 40 of the 1970s', "Alone Again (Naturally)" ranked as the fifth most-popular song of the decade (Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" was #1). "Alone Again (Naturally)" also spent six weeks at number one on the Easy Listening chart.[1] The track reached #3 in the UK Singles Chart.[2]
It is an introspective ballad, starting with the singer telling of his plans to commit suicide after being left at the altar, and then telling about the death of his parents. O'Sullivan has said that the song is not autobiographical, as he did not know his father (who died when O'Sullivan was 11) very well, and that his father had mistreated his mother.[3] "Alone Again (Naturally)" is included on O'Sullivan's The Berry Vest of Gilbert O'Sullivan album (2004) on the EMI record label. Big Jim Sullivan plays the guitar break in the original recorded version of the song.
The landmark 1991 copyright case Grand Upright Music, Ltd. v. Warner Bros. Records Inc. centered on the unauthorized use of a sample from "Alone Again (Naturally)" by rapper Biz Markie.

He sings with such sorrowful emotion that I feel like crying. He seemed to feel each song in his soul. This song seems to reflect the last days of his life. Divorced, lonely and so very sick. No one should have to die this way. Dodd Darin says in his book about his dad that Bobby was angry his health had failed him and afraid to die.. Before surgery, he went into a coma and after the 6 hour procedure, he never woke up. Bobby said “I want to be remembered as a great entertainer and as a human being”. YOU DID THAT AND THEN SOME! In 2021 I’m grieving for the loss that no entertainer can fill and the loss of a wonderful human being who wanted equal rights for each and everyone. Love you always, Bobby. I’ll never forget you and I’m grateful I can see your videos and hear your sweet voice.

This is untouchable - so emotional - I don’t remember ever hearing such a truely wrenching performance by anyone. The poignancy of the bridge lyrics about hearts that can’t be mended- and Bobby had a heart defect that I believe he knew could not be mended. Wow! Unbelievably tragic.

Totally agree with all the comments praising Bobby's sensitive treatment of Gilbert o Sullivants moving lament.
Most people will suffer some tragic loss in their lifetime and only recently my beloved wife of 55 years passed away so I can certainly relate to the lyrics as expressed in this balled.

I have never liked this song. It is full of self pity and just not for me.
Sure, Bobby sings it a hundred times better than the original but somehow it doesn't seem right Bobby should sing such a depressing song. Nobody matches near to him when he is singing one of his bouncy foot-tapping and finger -snapping numbers like 'Things' or 'Dream Lover'. This is no condemnation of the brilliant Bobby, just my opinion of a miserable song.
