I never realized how great of a jazz big band the NBC orchestra was until I got to hear the band in vids like this one. Thanx!

Bobby Darin was incredible. He could do it all. He had such a great TV show too - I wish you find copies of it on here. It's really sad that he'd be dead by the end of 1973.
Yes, it was so sad that at age 37 he would be dead just 10 months later. He was an amazingly talented man.

My family saw Bobby at a supper club in Las Vegas when I was 17 in about 1961. He was just great!! The very good old days of intimate entertainment.

@@ynotttt Ed McMahon's talent was sooooooooo under-rated and taken for granted. Howard Stern called him a "no talent" when Mr. McMahon could have hosted the show himself. He knew his place and became a Legendary Announcer and Second Banana to two great Stars: Carson and Lewis.

The segment with El Mouldo is hilarious especially because Johnny almost couldn't stop laughing. Makes me smile even when I'm very depressed. The show is such a comfort. Sometimes one wishes things could last forever!
I was in the 10th grade when this show aired, and because I had a TV in my room I often stayed up late on a school night to watch Johnny.
But I have NO memory of El Mouldo.
Was this a regular sketch? Was it on on often after and before this show.

@@MrJoeybabe25 I was a freshman in high school and we had him one in our house ever since I could remember and so it was like he was a part of our family .
Biography was here on audiobooks and I don't know if it's still here it was written by the guy who had also been his lawyer and best friend .
Johnny Carson lived an extraordinary life and lived well but later things were not so good for him and his later years were not good at all .
Just hearing it was so depressing and in the end he became a recluse with no friends .
He died a horrible death .
Is that audiobook is here you should listen for because it just was really interesting they could easily make an excellent miniseries from it

Bobby Darin was one of the best all around entertainers of all- time & it's sad he left us so soon. He could play just about any instrument, he could sing & he could dance & he could act, What a super talented guy he was & to this day he is still missed by many

The greatest thing about Johnny Carson on RUclips, is I get to pick out the funniest antidotes without waiting. I remember when I was 15 and still going to school, I used to beg my parent's if I could just see the monologue (they wouldn't let me see the whole show). Now I can finally see the animals at the end!
That's a cool memory. I feel you had good parents because it seems like they tried to be balanced and let you see part of the late show but not the entire late show.

Great post. I missed seeing the show because I was working graveyards back in those days. It was great seeing Bobby Darin. He was a fun entertainer to watch and listen to. As I was watching him perform, I was going to comment on how he compared to Billy Joel as a multi talented entertainer. While singing Splish Splash, he paid homage to Mr.Joel in the song, when he mentioned his name That impressed me at what a classy and cool thing he did...and Billy Joel ain't chopped liver either(smile). Maybe things such as that endeared many of us as fans of Mr Darin. He was just 'plain folks' who was a 110 mile an hour entertainer. Listening to how "rich"lol , his early life was may have parlayed into how he enriched ours lives with his gifts Rest in peace, Bobby Darin. I missed you then and still miss you now. You probably got ol' Saint Peter Splishin' and a Splashin',lol.

Mr. Darin was dying here... literally. Oxygen tanks backstage, etc. He was prophetic in that he understood that he would die in 1973. This was Feb., by April he
played his last Vega shows... dead by December. Smart guy, multi-talented, joy to watch.

His heart was already damaged from childhood illnesses He was ill CONSTANTLY, his failure to take anti biotics could have been accidental or a subconscious death wish. And yes, he DID say he'd die in ''73, many friends backed up this statement. Geeze Leweeze.
Rheumatic fever does a number on your heart. My dad had it as a child, and died at 52 from a massive heart attack.

It's so refreshing to see a late night talk show open with the musical act. Nowadays, they almost always bring out the singer as the very last act on the show. By that time, I've usually fallen asleep.
I'm so glad I found your channel. I've never seen this episode before. Antenna TV plays some of them but they're not complete shows and I haven't had a TV set in over a year.

Bobby Darin....WOW! My Mom loved him, our house was very sad when the news came that he died, just 10 months later.
Ahhh. the good ol days...or what I recall were the good all days when I was a kid!

What great Melodies harmonies and guitar playing, I really miss the heck out of them..Rip Jim Seals. You were a great musician, singer, while you are here on Earth.
I don't remember Johnny ever doing that "El Moldo" routine again, and I can see why.
I love watching Bobby most, but Bobby Rosario is super fun to watch conduct.

Just speculation on my part but they probably needed special licencing permission to show the musical numbers on the Antenna reruns and they didn't want to spend the money to get it.
The Music Unions are VERY expensive, which is sad considering how many are missing the Cultural significance of getting to hear Doc Severinsen and the NBC Orchestra and performers of their generation perform.

By 1973 was the "Tonight Show" feeding live from Burbank via satellite to NYC and then the tape fed to affiliates from there?
Yes. In fact those who had the very early satellite dishes (which were huge) could pick up the L.A. to NYC feed live.
The feed would also include the unaired portions when they would go to commercial (which were added in New York).
This became something of a scandal as Carson and company were unaware for sometime that the raw feed, with gossip, crude language and whatever else happened during the breaks, was being seen by these satellite viewers on their very expensive dishes.
This lasted for a while until NBC got wise and encoded the feed.
I'll bet some of these antics were recorded on early home vtr's and may be out there.
It would be cool to see them.

@@JD-ij5fi Bobby knew he was going to die young. Romatic fever as a young boy had damaged his heart and during this appearance he had already been suffering from damaged heart valves. Still, he pushed himself unbelievably. Say what you want about his “ego”, but Darin was one of the greatest all around performers of his time!

I almost spoke with Joan Embery once. I worked in a survey call centre in the '90s , the computer dialed numbers in sequence. We operators only knew state/area code, not with whom we were speaking. I got her answering machine, apparently at home, since it was personal, not business message. (The computer didn't know from listed/unlisted numbers).
This is one of Bobby Darin's final television appearances before his death later that year, RIP.
He's been dead for a long time.

He had a heart problem that was caused by Rheumatic Fever. Tragic sad -- he really lived much longer than expected and was ill a lot of the time before going on stage. (I knew his Conductor - Bob Rosario - another great man.)

Seals and Crofts, like a more charismatic Simon and Garfunkel, they are a musical artifact I remember well. The 70’s were full of people like them and Cat Stevens that sort of serenaded us all blissfully. Great era for acoustic pop music.

Now 75 with a rich storehouse of wonderful memories. From Johnny I learned how to have an interesting conversation with someone and how to be a good listener. Sad he had to leave. To quote Johnny himself, "Those DAMN CIGARETTES!"

I Loved Cat Stevens Tea for the Tillerman album and saw him in concert maybe it was 1975 or something like that .

I don't know if it's still here but there was the audio books here on RUclips of the biography of Johnny Carson by the man who was his best friend and lawyer .
What an extraordinary life he lived and they could easily make a wonderful miniseries from that book .
Regrettably in the end he was lonely and didn't really have many friends left they say he was a recluse at the end of life and died a horrible cancer death .
It was very sad and painful just listening to some of it towards the end .
" Jailer Bring Me Water" which I see was the flip side of " Things", the single release 1961-62. Former was given the Trini Lopez version early 1964,of whom I'm a fan. Bobby Darin was obviously very multi-talented, this is the very first time I've heard an interview of the person. He immediately comes across,as being very articulate, thoughtful,all of those good things

This is a good example of why the Johnny Carson show was so popular. Just watching the conversations was fascinating and fun.
Of the six "Tonight Show" hosts-Steve Allen, Jack Paar, Johnny Carson, Jay Leno, Conan O'Brien, and Jimmy Fallon-Johnny was the best; the most talented; the most versatile!
Conan was a strong second, shame Leno had to try and nix his whole carrer.

It’s hard to argue with Johnny’s appeal. Steve Allen was certainly an amazing talent who was quickly upgraded to prime time. Jack Paar was a fascinating personality and like Johnny and Steve, a smart and conversational host. Of the three since Johnny’s retirement, Conan is probably the most closest to the versatility of Carson. NBC did him wrong!
Jimmy needs to GOOOOOO!!!! I purposefully avoid watching him because he is the opposite of clever and funny. 😤😠
@@ryanrusch3976 Sorry. Conan "nixed" his OWN career when he first tried to push Jay out and then never listened to the network executives about making his show more "broad" in its appeal.
Orson Bean, to me, was one of the great guests; always interesting, with funny asides and stories. Occasionally a very funny joke, too. Thanks for posting this hour and a half version. I know when Johnny renegotiated his contract (I think once Fred Silvlerman took over NBC), Johnny said he'd keep doing the Show, as "long as it was only 1 hour." Johnny always said the last 30 minutes "dragged," a bit.....but, that's on the schedulers, not the extra half hour. Anyway, these 70's Hour and a half versions are GOLD! Thank you for uploading it! By the way, as a HUGE everynight watcher of the Tonight Show, the funniest Show I remember is the day after Thanksgiving, 1981, with guests James Garner and Regis Philbin. Very few laughs, which created a ripe environment for Johnny and Ed, to go off script, and when Ed razzed Johnny due to lack of jokes, I think Johnny was at his funniest, in few laughs. IF ANYONE HAS THIS GEM, please post. I was out of town, and couldn't videotape it. Thanks!
Thanks for sharing! I do have some memories of watching Johnny as a young child, but I was seven when he signed off, and mostly could only see him on Fridays, summers, and holidays due to early bedtimes for school, and even still I mostly just watched the monologues and perhaps the mail segment, but almost never stood around for the guests.
Orson Bean used to like to tell his story about how he couldn't afford to do some jobs earlier in his career like one in Canada that would have required a plane trip and a hotel. His agent said, "Orson, you need to start saving up for these jobs." :o)

Back when Doc was high AF on the show.. the 70s was a trip!
In those days I couldn't stay up that late. I had to get up early the next morning for school.
I stayed up anyway. I loved this show.

NYah the white shoes caught my eye too, I doubt they were ever in fashion for me, but you can’t blame Johnny and his clothing line from trying to change that.
He looked decent and had plenty of energy ....crazy he died later that year
Unfortunately Bobby had a heart condition that plagued him from childhood and it was only a matter of time before it gave out on him. In fact when he steps over to the desk to sit near Johnny you'll notice he's struggling to catch his breath for the first minute or so.
He failed to take the required antibiotics before a dental visit and developed sepsis which damaged his heart valves.After 6 hours of surgery in December he died without ever waking up.

Antenna TV is airing the 90 minute episodes from the 70s, at least selected ones, on weekends. Bobby Darin would be dead before the year was out. He was starring on the Bobby Darin show that year with Geoff Edwards as a co-star.
Bobby Darin died in Dec of that same year,1973. He was just 37. It was from heart surgery.
Wow, Tommy Amato (Bobby Darin's drummer) playing on Ed Shaughnessy's kit! I don't recall seeing guest drummers play on Ed's kit before.
Johnny actually used Ed's kit one night when he sat in for a song.

Amato was fantastic! Bobby put together bands like no one else and was no slouch himself, playing drums, piano, guitar, harmonica, and xylophone. Incredible once in a lifetime talent.
