Bobby Darin - Midnight Special
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 16 окт 2024
- "Midnight Special" is a traditional folk song thought to have originated among prisoners in the American South. The title comes from the refrain which refers to the passenger train Midnight Special and its "ever-loving light" (sometimes "ever-living light").
Let the Midnight Special shine her light on me, Let the Midnight Special shine her ever-loving light on me. (Traditional)
The song is historically performed in the country-blues style from the viewpoint of the prisoner. The song has been covered by many artists.
Lyrics appearing in the song were first recorded in print by Howard Odum in 1905.
Get up in the mornin' when ding dong rings, Look at table - see the same damn thing.
The first printed reference to the song itself was in a 1923 issue of Adventure magazine, a three-times-a-month pulp magazine published by the Ridgway Company. In 1927 Carl Sandburg published two different versions of "Midnight Special" in his The American Songbag, the first published versions.
The song was first commercially recorded on the OKeh label in 1926 as "Pistol Pete's Midnight Special" by Dave "Pistol Pete" Cutrell (a member of McGinty's Oklahoma Cow Boy Band). Cutrell follows the traditional song except for semi-comedic stanzas about McGinty and Gray and "a cowboy band".
Now, Mister McGinty is a good man, But he's run away now with a cowboy band. Refrain
Now Otto Gray, he's a Stillwater man, But he's manager now of a cowboy band.
Refrain[
In March 1929, the band, now Otto Gray and the Oklahoma Cowboys, recorded the song again, this time with the traditional title using only the traditional lyrics.
Sam Collins recorded the song commercially in 1927 under the title "The Midnight Special Blues" for Gennett Records. His version also follows the traditional style. His is the first to name the woman in the story, Little Nora, and he refers to the Midnight Special's "ever-living" light.
Yonder come a Little Nora. How in the world do you know? I know by the apron and the dress she wears.
Bobby left us far too early, but, now in 2024, he is still loved and rememberd. Best wishes to all his fans playing this video. England, March, 2024.
We all miss him, but he knew he would not be here long, that is why he gave it all up with every single song and performance, he had soul, he lived fully every moment. Sandra Dee loved him until her death. His son keeps his legacy alive. ❤❤❤
Elvis was the king of rock & roll, Michael Jackson was the king of Pop ... but Bobby Darin was the king of everything. RIP.
Great comment yes he did everything great, except for breathing air
Not sure if he was the king of everything. But he was definitely unique & in a class of his own. TCB
So true, a man who knew he was dying everyday and shared his joy for life, music and dance with us like no other. He could have been on a beach somewhere enjoying a margarita but instead hauled his oxygen around to be with the world.🙏💕💕♥️❤️♥️💕💕♥️♥️♥️💕💕♥️♥️♥️♥️
Such a talent. !!
AMEN!!!
Saw him in Vegas in 1972. I was 15. He was my dad's favorite. Amazing show. Played 4 instruments, danced and sang. He was sick but never knew it. Died the next year at 37 years old.
The greatest - I never miss a chance to tell people how wonderful this man was. Just love him - he's my hero since the 60's ❤❤❤❤
'I'll be your baby tonight' is like warm honey dripping........
'The Curtain Falls' is his perfect show/life closing.
Wish I'd seen him live..... amazing performer 🎉xxx
Music is the best thing that ever happened to most people. Bobby is one of the best things that ever happened to music.
You're absolutely 💯%! 👌 ❤️ 💓 💙 💖 right about Bobby Darin is the thing 👌 👏 😀 👍 😄 🙌 👌 👏 😀 👍 😄 🙌 that ever has to music 🎶 🎵 👌 😄 😀 😉 definitely ♥️ ❤️ 💖 ✨️ 😀 😄!
Bobby Darin is a great 👍 👌 👏 🙌 😀 😄 👍 👌 👏 🙌 😀 😄 entertainer!😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮😮
Wow! What talent! Bobby's death was OUR loss! RIP Oh good Bobby Darin. May your Holy soul enter into Heaven. May your light shine forever Bobby Darin. You are the Man!
I don't think there was anything that Bobby Darin couldn't do. I miss him and his talent. RIP Bobby gone too soon.
He had a remarkable talent. He grew with the music, tuning in on the changing trends and easily sliding into the role, evolving, and bringing sincerity to whatever he sang. Imagine how far he would have gone. We lost a marvelous entertainer.
Bobby was a mimic and changed with each decade. 🙏💕🙏💕
The Lord took Bobby away from us much too soon. I can’t blame the Lord because the Lord wanted Bobby performing in Heaven
Bobby was born to be a great entertainer and he fulfilled his dream to pack houses wherever he performed. God bless his memory and I hope his son is still enjoying life with Bobby’s grandchildren and his lovely wife. RIP BOBBY & Sandy. Stay together for eternity.❤❤❤
There’s something about Bobby Darin that you don’t get with other singers. There’s a relaxed carefree attitude in his performance, and yet 100% focused.
Supreme confidence and mastery over his craft
Bobby knew every song he sang at this time might be his last. He was taking oxygen between songs. Even with all the sorrow in his life he still loved life and performing and I wished I could have seen this concert.
Потому что он естественен в проявлении своего таланта. Он проживал каждую свою песню на сцене. Несомнно большой талант и большое сердце плюс чувство юмора и сумасшедшая энергия! ❤❤️❤💋💋💋
Darin was born with talent that it took Sinatra over 20 yrs to perfect. Darin was one of a kind. RIP Bobby, you sleep with the greats.
Neither Sinatra nor Elvis could have done a performance as good as this( and I speak as an Elvis fan). Bravo Bobby ! ! !
TRUTH !!
I Love Elvis too, but he was never as relaxed and confident like Bobby was. Elvis was never free, out of fear and nervousness, though his performances were electricfying.
Bobby Darin was one of the most talented performers, if not THE best performer, that I've ever had the pleasure to see, and I've seen a lot. Just pure excellence!!!
Frank Sinatra and Elvis were different performers completely although Bobby Darin seemed to embody both. Elvis saw Bobby Darin perform and supposedly said that he (Elvis) would not want to follow him.
As for the incomparable Frank Sinatra, here's a remarkable performance: One More for My Baby (One More for the Road):
ruclips.net/video/3jHr5JbTeRY/видео.html
Bobby Darin is amazing and I’ve watched a lot, LOT of concerts of him.. but Elvis is on a different level for me, and especially in the 1970’s. I’ve watched hundreds of concerts of him, not exaggerating, which are just something different, untouched.
Despite heart disease, he looks great here. He looked just as young as ever. What a great performance.
A man that can play the blues harmonica has the kind of soul connection that comes from the South. Bobby was truly. One in a Billion. I hope to meet him some day❤❤❤
This performance is the epitome of Bobby Darin, the consumate performer. Noone could touch him. By this time in his life he was extremely sick..had to take O2 backstage after performing. To go all out the way he did was nothing short of amazing! The world lost a great man..We miss you Bobby!

One of Rock and roll heaven 's most talented.

The most underrated musician, composer and vocalist period.
Let others forgive me, but Bobby Darin is the greatest artist of all time. He missed so much for giving us.
YES...AMAZING TALENT!!!
every now and then someone is born with just a little stardust in them this guy had a bucket full they took it back of us to dam quick his flame burn so bright still fills my heart with joy 76 year old fan
Thanks Roy for checking in with us.
no sweat peace
I had heard a few songs but really discovered the genius that is Bobby Darin 4 nights back and since then, I can't get enough. I'm a massive Elvis fan and was remembering him Aug 16th. On a phone call my sis mentioned a friend at work liking Bobby, I recalled Elvis and Bobby meeting so was searching for the pictures and came across If I were a Carpenter. I was reduced to tears. I played it over and over again thinking it was the best recording of a song I had ever heard. Since then I'm re-working all my rules, he's tearing up everything I know. I'm so glad to have met Bobby Darin albeit in precious clips like this. I haven't been able to stop smiling at the sheer joy from watching and hearing this force of talent. He is now simply a part of each day. He provides a masterclass with each genre he sings, swing, smooth, country, rock n roll, blues, soul, folk, he plays instruments and then he dances and boy can he dance, then there's comedy and impressions and somehow fitted in acting and by all accounts, a truly decent human being too. And if I can add, is very sexy throughout. Midnight Special is probably the single best all round performance I've seen. Midnight has become Bobby time. I'm not sleeping until I've heard the songs, watched the performances, smiled with him because he has a look as if he's singing just to you. I was 3 when he died.
Great comment ____ proves that great music is timeless ___ BD was exactly that that.
Awesome comment. I was a fan of Bobby in my childhood, but didn’t really delve into his full catalog until about 10 years ago. I too was blown away by the remarkable diversity and versatility that Bobby was able to exhibit over the course of his remarkable career. There was nothing he couldn’t do as a performer. He’s the greatest of all time for my money. He could do everything, and he did it all so brilliantly. Love my Bobby.
Bobby Darin takes you on a roller coaster ride when he performs midnight special.
One of the best entertainers of all time....period.
Bobby Darin - Awesome Songs Love All Of Them , Thank You RIP
Hard to live with..knowing your "short" future..but man he used his God given talent and cheeky personality to "do his thing" and be fondly remembered for ever. Who can lay claim to that?
What a beautiful person this man was. I love that he wasn't afraid to be silly and dance. What an incredible talent! I wish the audience would've given him more love and praise at the end. Bobby Darin, you are sorely missed.
Thanks Audrey for visiting my site and for taking the time to share your thoughts.

The most under appreciated entertainer in the last 100 years. He excelled at just about all pop genres and was also a superb song writer, musician and actor. There's also his great impressions of many other entertainers.
+nobodyaskedbut Indeed, the man was brillant
"I used to hate Bobby Darin for changing genres all the time, but then I realized that he was just being a genius."
Neil Young
My Dad's two favorite singers of all-time were Frank Sinatra & Bobby Darin... he would sing Bobby Darin tunes to me as a kid... & I never forgot how much I used to enjoy when he would put on his records of these two great artists.... This video shows just how versatile he was as an entertainer...

Thank you for the opportunity to hear these great songs again. Good memories
How the hell can the people in this audience just set there. He's making it rock
Here i am a 70 year old woman playing this over and over every night. What talent. I put my screen on full and at the end of this song i can see the pain on his face. So sad. Bobby Darin you make my heart happy with your expressions and your great voice. Rest in sweet peace Mr. bobby Darin.
Mary McCauley well said sweetheart

I'm 76 Mary, and I still love this man! Saw him in concert in Miami when I was a young girl, then live at the Copacabana in NY when I was an older teen. It was awesome!
Amazing Bobby woooow 🇱🇺🇬🇧

@@RiRi2023_ He was so cool. I am 76-year-old fan. I miss his swag on stage. I knew how he carried himself on stage he would be a great addition to our music world. Mr Goblet was along with Bobby, so so much creators of a time.
Icon! Never equalled and never forgotten. Viva Bobby Darin!
Listening to Bobby Darin takes away all my anxiety. I go into another universe when I put him on. There was never anyone like him. There will never be anyone like him again. So under appreciated. He was an absolute master.
Well said
So many comments and I just read them all. Agree with almost all of them. I can’t add anything better. He was a Fantastic Performer. and #1 in my book. I’m 82 now and have loved him since he started. I drove people nuts talking about ,him ,but since You Tube entered my life ,I’m just enjoying Bobby Darin and passing him on to my 10 grand’s and 15 great- grand’s. . Having a hard time picking the piece of music to be played at my Celebration of Life ,but it will be a Bobby Darin Song ,maybe 2. 🥰 Thank you Jan Hammer . Love 💕 the comments and you having this site. “Keep Bobby Darin Alive.” “Life is Good. “. ♥️🎼🎶🥀🎶♥️😎🥰
This guy oozes cool! His stage presence, moves and just ease of delivery. Amazing. A very underrated artist..
He is the greatest interpreter of all time. Able to sing all genres: Swing, rock and Roll, Jazz, pop, folk, country, rhythm and blues. In addition to being a composer, musician, actor, all at the highest level.
He also did a rap song way before it became popular. "Me and Mr. Horner".
I just found this out a few months ago so I had to listen to it even though I can't stand rap. I've listened to it several times.
In 2021 and quarantined, I’m blessed to have the videos and music of THE GREAT Bobby Darin. Loved you when I was a teenager but didn’t know ALL your talents. I’m 74 now and rockin’ with the greatest talent I’ve ever seen. I’m so sad you’re gone, but sexy man your soul and music lives on. I WILL NEVER FORGET YOU AND WILL ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR MUSIC. Thanks for the happiness you give me.
Me too !!! For everything he did. He keeps me amazed and Happy
This man has you jumping out of your seat!! WOW....
Need more songs from Bobby Darin
Had he lived he would have been Mr. Las Vegas instead of Wayne Newton and probably just as big as Frank Sinatra. He is awesome sure do miss Bobby
This guy could cover anything and write as well, A true genius. Maybe the most diverse and talented entertainer I have ever seen
U were the. Best. In the. World bobby we miss u
Abe, ditto. The older I get, the more amazing he seems. Rest in Joy, Bobby.
Thanks for that comment Abe... I feel exactly the same way...there was NOTHING Bobby couldn't do... one of the greatest talents to EVER walk the planet, but unfortunately, taken from us way too soon... but he will live forever...
Maybe because he was the only big show I saw in Vegas in the 1960’s but I simple could not believe that anyone could put on such an amazing show as he did that night.
@@billbetz9687 if that was the only show you got to see, then you certainly saw the right one... I'm 50 years old and I'm sooo jealous that I never got to see him but you did... that must be some memory for you bro!!! Bobby D FOREVER!!! Or should I say, Walden Robert Cassoto FOREVER!!!
If you combined Sinatra, Elvis, Tom Jones, Jackie Wilson and Springsteen.......you get BOBBY DARIN.
Great song! Credence Clearwater Revival sang it originally.
@@annemccarron2281 I think It was Leadbelly.

One of the absolute masters. Nearly a half century after his tragic and untimely passing, I am still trying to assimilate all of his vast and diverse catalog. He pretty much excelled at all that he did.
Excellent comment . He truly was special.
Still gives me chills at 72! I danced to every song he ever made. Man this man could move. He had rhythm in his marrow...in every cell!!! Believe me, this kind of rhythm never dies!!!
I get it @ 72 what a voice what an entertainer 👏
If only we could go back. Soon as we heard the first note, we were up and dancing. What movers we were. Now a day’s, lucky to get halfway, before the old legs give out and have to sit down, keeping the beat with arms and feet moving !
Sinatra is nothing compared to what Bobby was born with.
The most complete talent this country has ever produced.
Yes.
@@francisgaffney6074That's actually right about Bobby Darin!😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Bobby Darin is definitely 🔥 👌 💯 %😍 🙌 ❤️!
this is ENTERTAINMENT pure and simple. Your talent will never die Bobby.
God bless this man and his incredible talent. We will never see another like him. RIP Bobby, love and miss you so much 😢💕😘
Once Upon A Time...there was a magnificent, multi talented artiste who had Talent.. and Timing, perfect pitch, exquisite change of key, a virtuoso on any musical instrument you could name...supernatural on Vibes..Rhythm..from the top of his head to his better than James Brown dancing feet!!! I am 68 years of age, and have loved Mr D since the late 50's when Australia somehow, aired shows with Bobby performing..with his superb Two Step at the end of Look Out Old Mackey Is Back!! He dropped that routine from his performance...I don't know why...Others have praised him here..far better than I can express!! I have what is purported to be his final show, on DVD...and,after playing Splish Splash, he gets up..thanks the audience...and leaves the stage, for the final time. If you look closely at the expression in his eyes, you can see him..not soaking the pleasure up at their marvelous response..but the knowing look that he will never experience this moment, again. Bloody hell I miss you Bobby!! I know exactly where I was when I heard the news on the radio....I cried, Bobby D...I cry still. Catch him on an LP singing with Johnny Mercer, if you can..Special!! You are my Once Upon a Time, Bobby Darin..oh so long ago. Thanks, Mr Hammer..I keep watching your vids.
You're a true fan. Mr. Darin certainly would have appreciated your sentiments so nicely expressed.
Marilyn Stevenson, well said! I'm about the same age as you now, and I have loved Bobby forever! I did not know until after he passed, that he had an incredibly high IQ and was part of Mensa organization for "High IQ intellectuals" and that he could play any instrument and as Sammy Davis Jr. said once that "Bobby Darin has a black man's soul and rhythm in "a white man's body"..so true he had this natural rhythm anyone could see. Multi dimensionally talented, in singing, writing songs, playing many instruments, dancing and his acting was also incredible. Watch the movie "Pressure point" with Darin and Sidney Poiter. Bobby plays a very sick twisted "Nazi sympathizer and sociopath" in prison, where Sidney is the psychiatrist and tries to help him and figure out how he came to be such a messed up man. They go back over his childhood and it was horrible, and that is where Darin does his incredible acting chops!
Bobby Darrin. We love you and always will you gave us hope and love to sing and dance !! You are our shing star thanks for the memores!! You are the best thank you shined on my friend we love you!!!
Thank you all here for the emotional and detailed descriptions of him and his phenomenal performances, especially the last performance and the film Pressure Point.
This is before my time, but yet one of the best performances of a classic tune. Bobby and his band, top notch talent sorely lacking today. Awesome, a national treasure.
Coming of age in the 60s I heard Bobby Darin's music and saw him in films. While it was obvious to me even then that he was multi talented, I was mostly into blues rock and made no effort to fully appreciate him. Later I broadened my interests in music styles and came to realize just how talented he was. I recall when he died. It's really nice with youtube that we can see him perform live.
Thank you for articulating this, my similar experience.
This is a very old song done. Better than any one else.
The thing he does with his hand after singling ..."the police will jump you"...is just magic
SONG, DANCE, ACTING........there was no one like Bobby. Sandra Dee NEVER re -married......he was THEE man......taken from us far too early and remembered by few. Only those who know his talents are die-hard fans. He couldn't read music, but arranged and conducted most of his music. He wrote 136 SONGS!!!!!! His best is a debate....A SIMPLE SONG OF FREEDOM, or LONG LINE RIDER......those were his, and his alone. He sang, he danced, he wrote, he arranged, he acted(pretty well) His talent was FAR FAR, FAR under-appreciated for most of his time - and continues to this day. HE KNEW HE HAD A LIMITED TIME ON THIS EARTH......READ HIS STORY..........AS LONG AS I AM ALIVE, BOBBY WILL LIVE...........
I am only 52, he was gone when I was four and yet I remember because Bobby was the shit as they say. Blew away his peers in talent and personality. A huge loss for American music.
I think Bobby Darin was multitalented and simply put marvellous. I watch his videos now many years later and still get the utmost enjoyment from them . Thanks for those of you who shared this pleasure with me. He's number one.
Thanks Mary for taking the time to share your thoughts.

Also, that damn smile. How someone not “classically” handsome can be so incredibly sexy... oof.
Thanks Natalie for checking in with us,
I had the biggest crush on him when I was like, 7-10 years old (back in the sixties)!
I've been searching to put my finger on it on what I've been feeling...that's what he is....sexy, gosh I wish I could tell him that.
You described him well! He simply oozed self-confidence & charm. How could a man with incredible talent who loved people & performing not be sexy?
Bobby Darin was the real deal. He was a singer and a performer. He shined onstage. He did it proud. I never knew he played the harmonica. I love this song. I loved all his songs from 1960 till now Thanks for the rare video clip.
He's got the music in him, bless his heart.

EP in 74' at Sahara Tahoe and FS at Bally's Reno in 88', I was right in front ($250 ticket was) and was the 1st person he came to when the 90 min show was over and shook my hand a good 5 sec. from the stage! I will never forget that moment! Sinatra truly had the BLUEST eyes you ever saw!)..* along with of course Bobby Darin, Jackie Wilson, Tom Jones, Sam Cooke, Al Green.......Hall & Oates, Simply Red' ( Mick Hucknell) I love them ALL and many more from my era to the STAX label...Please look me up and hear/see my " Career"....*..NICKYDEPAOLA.COM...* God bless'

So glad I got to see Bobby!! Great entertainer 🎵 🎶 So sad he died so young😢 Your gone Bobby but never forgotten 🙏🏻💖🎵🎶 Thanks for all the great songs 🎵🎶💔
Hi Dottie,hope you’re okay ?
fantastic talent
Well I enjoyed this immensely , I was not aware he sang this song . I only 1st became acquainted with him when I was 19 but became instantly hooked by his charisma & what seems to me an unending list of talents . Bobby could play multiple instruments including guitar , drums , piano/keyboards , harmonica , trombone and the 4 idiophone family instruments : vibraphone , glockenspiel , xylophone and marimba , he wrote hit songs across 5 different genres , plus wrote several title tracks for films along with composing complete movie scores . He could sing , dance , act , tell jokes with impeccable comedic timing even improvising came natural to him making him an awesome draw at nightclubs . He starred in over a dozen movies , even going as far as writing , directing , starring and producing 1 or 2 of his own films , 1 of which "The Vendors" was never released . Bobby even lent a hand to many upstart musicians and comedians , also he was involved in protest issues and was involved with Robert Kennedy's campaign making appearances on behalf of the candidate and was heavily involved giving help to Kennedy during the primaries .
You can see over the 12 years I've really got into Bobby and have 7 CD's 2 of them are double discs , So you could say 9 CD's . 1 of the double discs has 50 songs so I have a ton of his songs and was shocked to see 1 I had not heard of .
Thank You Jan

Way better than coffee in the morning!
Thank you Bobby what a talent you are missed
Have watched this performance many times, as it is just the Ultimate! Notice how Bobby is very out of breath and perspiring as he ends the song, but he gave it everything he had and then some. This show was filmed the year of his death in December after open heart surgery. We lost this great man way too soon! Danny's comment says it all!
Thanks Carol for sharing your thoughts.
