  • AROID Rescue - Saving a Philodendron Rojo Congo
The Philodendron Rojo Congo is a popular ornamental houseplant known for its striking, deep burgundy to dark green leaves. This is a rescue videos where I try and bring one back from the brink.
Botanical Name: Philodendron Rojo Congo belongs to the Philodendron genus and is scientifically known as Philodendron 'Rojo Congo.' It is a hybrid plant created in the US.
    Appearance:
Leaves: The most distinctive feature of the Rojo Congo is its large, leaves that are typically a deep burgundy or maroon color. The foliage can sometimes appear almost black, depending on the lighting conditions. As the leaves mature, they might turn a dark green on the upper surface while retaining their red or burgundy undersides.
Growth Habit: It is a compact, bushy plant that grows up to 2 to 3 feet (60-90 cm) in height. The leaves are glossy and have a velvety texture.
    Care and Maintenance:
Light: Rojo Congo thrives in bright, indirect light. Avoid direct sunlight, as it can scorch the leaves. Low light conditions may cause the plant to lose its vibrant color, so providing the right amount of light is crucial.
Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry. Reduce watering during the winter months when the plant's growth slows down.
Humidity: Philodendron Rojo Congo prefers high humidity levels. Regular misting or placing a humidifier nearby can help maintain the required humidity.
Temperature: It prefers temperatures between 65°F to 80°F (18°C to 27°C). Avoid exposing it to cold drafts or temperatures below 50°F (10°C).
Soil: Well-draining, peat-based potting mix is ideal for this plant.
    5. Toxicity: Like many philodendron species, the Rojo Congo is considered toxic to pets and humans if ingested. It's important to keep it out of the reach of children and pets.
In summary, the Philodendron Rojo Congo is a stunning houseplant with its richly colored foliage and relatively easy care requirements, making it a popular choice for those looking to add a touch of tropical elegance to their indoor spaces.

It's quite common now but I still love it. I don't keep too many Philodendron these days but this is still a stunner when bigger.

@@aroid_artist I just purchased a very small one that I came across in a shop. I wonder if it's possible to grow these as a climber despite being marketed as a self heading philodendron. It's parents are climbing philodendrons after all.
