She died in 2006 at 63 , may God bless her soul . If my still-living father sees this film , he too would cry watching . Thank You Mister Rogge for uploading this film for posterity . Thank you so much for sharing this precious clips of the land of my birth! It brought a lump to my throat to watch some of these well-loved landmarks of my childhood, to see for myself that they existed way before I was born! I treasure this experience very much.
Thank you very much Mr. Micheal Rogge for your video posting about Sarawak/Kuching 1960. These Video can give the idea to the younger generation on how Kuching actually look like in the golden days. Once again thank you.
Wow, now I can see how old the St. Thomas Cathedral and the Bishop's House is! It's amazing how different the scenery surrounding the Diocese of Kuching's central church was back then!
Thanks Michael - this brings back many fond memories. Am happy to report many of the buildings still stand, including Golf Links flats, Square Pavilion and Police Officers Mess. Sadly the Treasury is no more. Cheers!
Watching this in 2020, i was born in 1998. I’m 22yo now , how i wish i could travel into time and experience this myself. Kuching looks so much peaceful back then! And the driving test is kinda cute😂
Sarawak did not join the Federation of Malaysia in 1963. Sarawak, Sabah and Singapore (withdrawn in 1965) joined Malaya to form the Federation of Malaysia.
@@peterchern8978 sadly my ethnic people only make up less the 10% of the population in malaysia, its quite unfortunate to see my culture and race dying.
I was in Sarawak 7 years after this film was shot, a teenager from NZ, flying in from Singapore on a Comet jet. If my memory serves me correctly, that ATC building at the airport was still in use then. Returning in 2011, 44 years later, I can tell you that some of the urban roads and housing hadn't changed much at all. The traffic however was bedlam at times. Many fewer British cars too!
Omg I loved this footage. Don't matter to me if sarawak joined or formed Malaysia. What matters to me is there exists some footage of how things were in this hometown of ours back in the 60s..truly historical.. Tq for sharing the footage
Thank you, Michael for sharing this video with us. It's so kind of you. I will share it with my family, the older generation so they could have a lovely walk down memory lane.
Amazing...!those cars Austin Minors, land Rovers and others imagine they are still arround today.....what car the lady drove....is it Volvo 166? feel like in the 60s.....Thanks for the film...really enjoy it.....
Thanks so much for this amazingly well preserved video of my childhood hometown..my older brothers were in the SarawakPolice..I actually had tears watching the parade & hearing God Save The Queen. I held a British passport then. I also took part in the child's driving test..a police project to teach the locals road courtesy(LOL)!!
Four years old then...what can I remember...but as I grew older...those places were still there...nostalgia...oh...nostalgia...alas they are now mostly gone!!!
The Kuching I can relate myself to. Was born in Miri in '71 but raised in Kuching from '73 thru '85. Moved to Miri Nov 28 '85 and stayed here ever since. Most of the buildings and landmarks are still around when I was raised there. Now I don't know whether they are still around or not
Hi. It has been a pleasure to watch such a historical video at least to me and my fellow Sarawakians. Thank a whole lot for the vids. Hope to see more of these. An eye opener indeed to the future generation as references.
Great film, Sarawak is a special place with a special history unfortunately being suffocated by Malaysianism. Incidentally that is a Morris Minor not a Wolseley.
I'm quite fascinated of the Sarawak Constabulary. As a Sarawakian myself, I always knew about the Rangers and all but the Sarawak Constabulary never heard of it until I see this. Well done.
And as a matter of fact, my father really accurately depicts on how the Police in Sarawak used to be like back in the day and I always imagine it like that.
Thanks Mike for a refreshing look at ole Kuching! Loved the familiar "God save the Queen" played by the Royal Constabulary, at the Badruddin police HQ.!
Interesting video clip; Especially the buildings which no longer exists. The site where the Aurora Hotel stands is now the Merdeka Palace Hotel and Suites, but the Aurora namesake is retained, where its coffee house is named Aurora Court. Please,do share more interesting clip during your days in Sarawak!
I have two more clips on old Kuching. Search RUclips with Michael Rogge + kuching. I have one on the malasian police sports meeting and another one on the 1960 Regatta. Coming: Cruise to Hong Kong and homeward bound.

Kuching was really beautiful back then in the colony. As a new generation of Sarawakian i wish that Sarawak never join the federation. We had our own polices, soldiers and gov but now all perished.
I think the "The clip ends with a view of the children's driving license ground." is the Shell Traffic Garden? Shell organises traffic games for school children to promote traffic safety awareness. See the mini cars in this video look alike with the one in the photo on this article: www.theborneopost.com/2013/03/15/shell-traffic-games-turns-50-this-year/
No wonder residences were built next to the jungles i.e. Crookshank Road, Bampfylde Road, Ong Tiang Swee Road. The ones preserved till today are surely very nice to stay in. Although the state government currently owns all of them.
Such a lovely lovely place Kuching. Proud to be Sarawakian. If only we didn't help form Malaysia....a once proud and beautiful nation, now being consumed and colonised by Malaya!!!
