Well its wellknown that the english version wasnt too elegant... But i believe its never easy to translate a song from one langage to another and keep the smooth and beauty from the original...

  • @shinie0303
    @shinie0303 12 лет назад +16

    I disagree.
Firstly, do note that it's very hard to top an original - to even match it - especially when the original is so [perfect] good.
Having said that, I'm pretty happy with this translation. It renders the true /meaning/ of the song. It's /meant/ to be highly erotic.
That's one of the reasons I love it so much. It's about our base desires but at the same time it's so intensely poetic.
This does it justice: it's not explicit.
There's no question what it's about but it's still all imagery.

This is one of the few songs from the English version that the translators seem to have taken their time with. It's quite well done; almost as good as the original.

Where do people get the idea that Quasimodo is somehow above feelings of lust? Look at the original lyrics: "When she dances revealing her body. . . My eyes gazed under her gypsy dress" all sexualized fantasies he has for Esmeralda.

I like this version. The translation impressed me, even if it's not flawless. Also a very good cast. Don't know how many of them are original. In most versions you've seen them give up finding a counterpart to Garou (understandable). It's a lot easier to tell the voices apart when they're all singing. That's good in my opinion.

Belle (Is the Only Word) [Belle]
    [Quasimodo:]
Belle, is the only word I know that suits her well.
When she dances oh the stories she can tell.
A free bird trying out her wings to fly away.
And when I see her move I see hell to pay.
She dances naked in my soul and sleep won't come.
And it's no use to pray these prayers to Notre dame.
Tell, who'd be the first to raise his hand and throw a stone.
I'd hang him high and laugh to see him die alone.
Oh Lucifer please let me go beyond god's law.
And run my fingers through her hair, Esmeralda.
    [Frollo:]
Belle, there's a demon inside her who came from hell.
And he turned my eyes from god and oh, I fell.
He put this heat inside me I'm ashamed to tell.
Without my god inside I'm just a burning shell.
The sin of eve she has in her I know so well.
For want of her I know I'd give my soul to sell.
Belle, this gypsy girl is there a soul beneath her skin.
And does she bear the cross of all our human sin.
Oh Notre dame please let me go beyond gods law.
Open the door of love inside, Esmeralda.
    [Phoebus:]
Belle, even though her eyes seem to lead us to hell.
She may be more pure, more pure than words can tell.
But when she dances feelings come no man can quell.
Beneath her rainbow coloured dress there burns the well.
My promised one, please let me one time be untrue.
Before in front of god and man I marry you.
Who would be the man who'd turn from her to save his soul.
To be with her I'd let the devil take me whole.
Oh Fleur-de-lys I am a man who knows no law.
I go to open up the rose, Esmeralda
    [Quasimodo, Frollo & Phoebus:]
    Esmeralda.

The video is taken from the original French version, so the subtitles are a translation of the French lyrics. However, the English singing that has been put along with the video is a much more loosely translated version which aims to preserve the meter and rhyme as opposed to the exact meaning of the original French words.

But they're not actually saying it... They're thinking it, and using the song to express their feelings to the audience. You seriously think Frollo would just let Quasimodo even be around if he knew that he was in love with Esmeralda too?

I mean they say the same thing about the sexuality and desire it's just the way they talk about it. For exemple Quasimodo can't even stand Esmeralda looking at him, how would he say out loud his desire for her, or Frollo, he's preist and he's ashamed of what he wants,he's trying even to get rid of it as much as he tries to get it.I know this is a different kind of art and not everything should be litteral from the book, but this is just my opinion as I said, thanks for sharing yours

I think that the English words for this song are much better than those for Florence and Lune. Obviously, the French lyrics are going to be the best because they are the original. But I think the translator did a good job with this one. :-)

@naniro1616 If you actually follow the sub titles then they are pretty much trying to convey the same meaning. The only difference really is the language changes, structure and vowel sounds. Also, during the 15th century there was little "subtle" attitudes towards sex and love. (to the extremes)

These are the subtitles of the song. Could someone please translate it into Spanish? I am Spanish and my translation of the song seems horrible. (Although in the end the letter is bad, I still love the song because I love Daniel Lavoie).
Please forgive me for my bad that I post. I have a hard time and I have made many mistakes. I have taken the subtitles of Daniel Lavoie´s website which I recommend you visit if you are fans of him.

@flynn19; How are they distracting? You must have problems with concentrating on things. I never notice the body mics. I only see great actors, great singers, and a great story. I would much rather have the great sound quality of a nice microphone right near their mouths than something hidden that wouldn't pick it up quite the same. I can't believe anybody would have any complaints about this musical, especially regarding body mics and their lack of a ''complex and engaging set''.

This song is beautiful but also horrifying. These three men are calling a woman a demon from hell just because of how she looks. She dances suggestively yes, but woman of ethnic heritage couldn't get jobs during that time it was the only way she could earn money and get food and she's called a demon for that.

I understand that, but do you think that someone would say it that way in 19th century when the book was written, or 15th century when the it takes place? It just doesn't suit the characters. Never wanted to insult the English version, I apologize if I did, this is just my opinion about this song, the others are good, no need to be so defensive.

Overall, I think the English translation is quite good. However, one line that has always bothered me is "Without my God inside, I'm just a burning shell." For some reason, this line has always struck me as inelegant. The words "burning shell" evoke something bizarre. Better, I think, would be to follow the original image of turning away from heaven, but use a word like "celestial" to rhyme with "tell" in the previous line.
I.e. "He put this heat inside me, I'm ashamed to tell/Turning my steps away from the celestial."

Does wanting her make me a criminal?

''Beseeching Lucifer to run their fingers through her hair'' Well Quasimodo is in a quite hopeless condition. He knows she will never be with him, but there's nothing he can do about the fellings. He knows that not even God can help him, so he is willing to sell his soul just to be worthy of one touch. And Phoebus, yeah he's an asshole so no excuse for him
