I grew up listening to Glamorous by Fergie. When Jack Harlow’s song came out, none of my friends knew what I was talking about when I said “I loved the original!”…. 😕
This topic was actually discussed in my music theory class years ago in high school. There's a literal formula you can write to predict the future of how music sounds. It's really interesting.
I totally respect wanting the younger generations to be introduced to good music, but what some artists are doing nowadays is just straight up stealing, some of them don’t even sample them, they just use the same instrumental and hook with some of their voices
Yeah sampling can work really well when it’s transformative, but some of these border on remixes. I don’t love Kanye as a person but he samples well lol
Y’all are all wrong. The music you grew up was “stolen” too. Whitney Houston’s biggest song was “stolen”. Biggie and R.Kelly both made the same song and then Ashanti “stole” it 10 years later. Dancehall artists make 20 songs on the same beat. the boy R&B groups back in the 80s/90s used to “steal” New edition or Jackson 5 or temptations songs and it was their first big hit. Everyone “steals” y’all are just old and are starting to do what your parents did to you which was saying all your new movies/music/athletes are crap and my generation was better. And half of these stolen songs were hated by the people that they sampled but they either didn’t own the rights to the song so they couldn’t block it or the label kept begging and they finally gave in… but y’all still loved the songs as kids
@@camerondrain8166 Um dude, I didn’t even grow up during any of those times, and even so, their “work” doesn’t justify todays, stopping looking for excuses to defend your own petty thoughts
I think a big problem with sampling is when artists don’t credit the original artist as songwriters. They are taking something that isn’t theirs and turning it into something new without fairly crediting the original artist which usually ends with lawsuits. (Obviously not all artist do this but it’s still surprising how many do)
From Thomas Bangalter, one of the members of Daft Punk "it's always been a way to reinterpret things, sometimes it's using an element from the past, or sometimes recreating them and fooling the eyes or the ears, which is just a fun thing to do"
Yeah agree tbh. Sampling has gotten sloppy. We need more talents like Madlib who can take like 1 second of a sample and craft a completely different song from it.
@@DEMO_TESTERS me too 🙃 except maroon - 5 is also my favourite and some underrated band (i don't think u care but it's : fall out boys, twenty one pilot, and set it off)
For as many songs have lackluster/uncreative samples today, there's just as many rap songs being made WITHOUT ANY samples, which was very rare just until recently.
This is why I don’t like a lot of Ava maxs’ songs I don’t listen to her but I have heard her some of her songs, and all of the ones I’ve heard are remakes of older songs , they’re just really similar to classic songs, like reallly similar, and idk I just don’t like her songs

These are are songs I’ve grown up with. And these artists are around my generation paying homage to artists that didn’t get as much love and admiration as they deserved, so bring them up, play their song, pay respect to the people that paved the way and say thank you.
Well the good thing about music is you can always listen to your favorite songs so no need to continue looking for music you know you dont like. Experimental songs are always a good thing and its not going to make your favorites dissapear so this feels like a redundant complaint but i get it because ill do the same thing, especially for stuff i feel srrong about. I also love how you showed a face of Harlow when you said theres a problem.
The reason why is because today's music is all about a vibe.and yes nostalgia brings upon a vibe to put you in a zone.like hypnosis.music today wants to capture your mind.opposed to back in the day it wanted to free your mind.huge difference
Yall really use "Nostalgia" as a excuse as to why many so-called artist are making cash grab samples 😂😂😂 Yes i agree with you when you said music is a vibe. Most people on the vibe of so-called artists need to make fresh songs and come up with something new that can sound fascinating, don't get me wrong sample is not a bad concept of music but your favorite artists don't how to be transformative with the samples. They literally just putting voices on the older music riding the coat tail from those songs some cash grab reasons.
If there’s any problem with music it’s that there’s people out there that wanna complain about sampling and autotune instead of just listening to the fucking music
I think people need to realize that sampling is damn hard. There's videos on Kanye making tracks in the studio and he changes beats up to match his tempo
They do this in so many radio edm and trap songs too they're all just old songs like Radiohead's creep or whatever and it's just a indie girl singing it and just add a kick and bouncy bass
Theres lots of older samples that i and many others recognize and we love them because its cool to see what was done to the original and how it was transformed. Knowing the original sample usually makes you appreciate the song way more than you woukd have without preemptively knowing the song being sampled The problem here is that these “samples” discussed in the video are not transformative in any way and might as well be remixes, remixes that are 1000 times worse than the original.
I have never seen sampling used in a modern context to make something better than the sum of it’s parts. If anyones got any suggestions I’m open to them.
lowkey weird how they’re able to use a sample as, essentially, the whole song. i think sampling used to utilize smaller parts of songs or just background sounds but now the whole CHORUS? oof. i do enjoy the idea of reintroducing music to new generations but idk the whole thing kinda bothers me? one time I briefly read about how Rick James got in a law suit or something with mc hammer because his “sample” was fundamentally the ENTIRE song (one of the reason why super freak is superior to can’t touch this😋) and so rick james ended up being added as a composer to the songs credits.
I’ve always loved that music sampling gave me the opportunity to listen to the same (general idea of a song)that my mom grew up with but in a different form in a new way that I enjoyed shout out to Melanie Martinez for the song pity party.
Not to mention the fact that modern music consumers always want the next new thing. Once a hit comes out, it's a hit for a few weeks and then completely forgotten about, and then the consumers want a new hit. New hit comes out, stays a hit for a few weeks and the cycle repeats.
