I am thinking of an experience in Florence, Italy, where we admired the marble statue of David from Michelangelo. Yes, it looks great. But... not having studied the period of time in more depth, not knowing the thinking of Michelangelo, not understanding the crafts used, not having learned about the symbols expressed in the details of the statue, it simply is a statue made of marble.
Fortunately, my cousin, at that time professor of arts and architecture and working in Florence, explained to us the dozens of details of this statue making it become outstanding in our understanding -- and yes -- in our experience.
This means, the way something is explained based on artistic research opens the eyes and ears for experience. Knowledge is intertwined with experience. Otherwise, experience may just be dull. We have to understand to be able to enrich our experience. This knowledge and experience will never leave me.
Once a friend told me listening to a beautiful Raga of classical Indian music that the Vena sounds like a cat's cry. He thought it was hurting his ears. The lack of understanding, the lack of experience, the lack of cultural openness, the lack of research into the subject spoiled his experience. He took a defensive position.
Research is a systematic investigation into a subject.
Personally, I am mostly interested looking at arts from a philosophical and psychological point of view.
In it's purest form, to me art is total subjectivity that knows no object. The artist and the art become one. The world is forgotten. And science goes the opposite way, but with the same ultimate aim, analyzing and splitting everything until the truth is seen.

Thanks for posting. I am doing some "Pre-search", before embarking on a doctorate in songwriting. I have questions: Is a PhD in the Arts valid? Does it impact my practice? How does it benefit others? I suppose everyone has similar questions.
I am not sure I quite understand the first question. If you become part of an accredited program, it is valid of course. The answers to the other ones would depend on your particular project and what kind of a research topic you end up choosing. Best of luck!
Thanks for getting back to me@@ElinaAkselrud . I was aiming to help others who may be in the same situation. I was retorically asking if the knowledge gained via doctoral study would have impact beyond self-knowledge. I.e. validity. If we take Music to be the study of, "human interactions with relationships in sound" - my own definition, not a quote, then research has impact in Music, itself and the social sciences. That seems a strong reason to research and contribute to the Field.
I guess I'm trying to validate it in my mind, before taking such a big leap.

So could a artistic research "for the arts" in "instrumental perspective" be for ex " By participants playing with clay finding a shape for a bench they think are giving both private and togetherness possibilities in a public space"? Then I use a already existing place and by different shapes trying to investigate different outcomes?

Hello Elina! Your video is interesting and well presented. However, I have been reading about artistic research a lot, watching videos, presentations...but I still just can't make up my mind about it. The three definitions you presented (on, for, in)...I read them multiple times but I just can't see anything. The more I read the more it feels like James Joyce (could be related). I have an academic background, but I don't know what to make of a type of research that I have to decode first. And it seems that it drags you towards disciplines that are far away. The example of the alloys, for instance...if I am an artist and want to do a Doctorate in sculpture I would probably not be interested and prepared to do a Doctorate on metals. Or for music...as a composer, should I write a thesis composition writing "ok now I am using this note, this harmony" explaining my process? The examples in the definitions...couldn't they be successfully investigated with a "traditional" approach? It seems to me that AR also has a sort of psychology edge. Thank you!
I think the key to AR is understanding concepts. Of course one doesn’t necessarily have to explain the use of every single note/harmony, as you are saying, however being able to ‘dissect’ the artistic process(es), if you like, is essential in order to derive the new knowledge as a result of artistic research. Sometimes some extra background is necessary, depending on what exactly the research encompasses. Since this is a relatively new field, each journey/research is unique and every path can be quite different from the others.
@@ElinaAkselrud Thanks for the reply:) I agree when you say "dissect". While I am honestly interested in it, I find it hard to find its peculiarity. I am fascinated by composition processes...how to scientifically investigate, or even measure them...don't know. Artistic processes are so personal that I think it would be hard to derive knowledge useful for others. But I will keep looking for information. I am considering doing a Doctorate and I am interested in AR, but cannot fathom if it is something for me. Cheers!
