    -------------------------
What do you want to be when you grow up?
    They smiled enthusiastically.
It might as well have been sarcastically
Cause the day they stopped looking down at my head,
Was the same day they started looking down at what I’d said,
Okay so maybe it wasn’t all possible,
But I was okay with just the plausible,
    I wasn’t a diva, I didn’t make a scene,
    I was a teen
That had just started to dream,
And I wanted to do was run ahead, full steam
But what they saw was me clowning around
And so they told me to stop, told me to settle down.
They said I could be whatever I wanted to be
    Once I had my degree
That I could go off and chase my dreams
So long as I had a plan B
    I continued on in a system I didn’t understand.
Doing what I should but with nothing planned
    I loved my teachers,
    My time on the bleachers,
But when all I’m looking forward to was the end
I couldn’t help but wonder, has life even began?
I can miss this, need to show up for that
Get a good collection of letters, if I just avoid the math
I went to school but missed my education
It felt like I was playing one of those stupid phone games, just more pain, less gratification
4 years out, and I wasn’t even halfway done
A jack of no trades, a master of fun.
I worked on my back up for so long.
But I couldn’t focus cause we just didn’t belong
And at the end of it all I forgot everything I wanted to do.
That’s what school did for me, maybe it was better for you.
I tried joining the work force and had over a dozen 9 to 5s
But I always ended up quitting cause none of them made me feel alive
I didn’t want to work so hard on a plan B that it became plan A
I don’t care if the pay’s great, I don’t want to do something I hate till I turn grey
So I took a moment and asked myself, what do I want to be?
And the only thing I could think of was that I just wanted to be.. me.
I wish I were one of the few that figured out what they wanted to do at an early age
But I’m just one of the many that figured out what I didn’t want to do at any given stage
I’ve been called stupid, nerd, geek,
Just cause I didn’t want to live my life the same way. Whatever, I’m Proud to be Unique.
My mom wanted me to at least finish school, maybe be an eye doctor,
I told her I’d rather live on the streets, not to shock her,
But to say that though my sight was poor, my vision was finally clear
I wanted to explore the unknown, move forward without fear
I closed my eyes and went for it
I tripped over my ego; a scar on my pride to show for it
It was like I jumped off a boat and into the ocean
Sink or swim. This idea was broken.
But I found some things that I love, and I tried a lot of things that I hate.
I learned to take chances. I learned to make mistakes.
I realized my passion and then once again I took action.
It was so much easier, when Plan B’s not there as a distraction.
Like popping in a TV dinner, instead of trying not to burn the meal you’re cooking.
How do you chase your dreams, expect to achieve them if you’re not even looking?
It’s the thing you dream about, the thing you always go back to when push comes to shove.
When there are no guarantees in life, and you can fail at something you hate, why not fail at something you love?

We are called the Lazy Generation, us millennials. We are called helpless, and stupid, all because we don't want to waste our childhood in a broken system, and grow up to become another pawn in the Corporation Chess Game. As a great poet once said, we are the music makers, and we are the dreamers of dreams. We honestly give all we have, but we don't have much. We are trying our hardest. Really. If I had a dime for every time a baby boomer asked me what I wanted to be when I grow up, and they were disappointed in my answer, I would have enough money to pay off my inevitable student loan debt. Now, when someone asks me, I tell them that I don't know yet. But, what I really want to be, is an album artist that also travels the world and teaches music to children in third world countries, or, be an anonymous author who lives in a tree house in rural Chile, or maybe even a tarot card reader in a traveling in fair in eastern Thailand. Honestly, I don't give a damn what I am doing, as long as I am happy and with people I love. We are Indigo Kids. That crazy self-proclaimed psychic lady in the 70's was right about us. I hate how idiotic and illogical the definition of Indigo Children sounds, but it makes since, for the most part. I am only a month into my High School Career, but I am lucky enough to be able to "attend" school online. I can explore different ideologies, theories, and, most importantly, myself and my spirituality. I am, or at least I think, that I am an Indigo Kid. God, I sound like a complete jerk-off.

That was simply amazing. As a poet and someone who slams, this just showed me raw talent. You are not simply a young actor and martial artist. You are amazing and eloquent with your words. You are able to express yourself in such a way that very few have. Please keep writing. Let your talent blossom into something beautiful.

Idk if you were actually asking, but I want to be an actor. It's something I love. I'm good at it and I figure I could help my family out. I'm only 13 now, but a girl can dream right. But, Uhhh, osric your an inspiration, and I can speak for everyone here, we love you, don't ever change. Everyone loves you cause you speak the truth. You inspire us to do what we love, what we enjoy. And overall, you are a beautiful soul.

Pandagaming please don't let anyone tell you that there's plan B more important than your dream. I always wanted to be an actress (I always was a good liar) but my family was like "yeah childhood dream, now do your math" (well i like math but still...). I'm 22 now and this dream is still here and I finally found my courage and this summer got first job as an extra in tv show and it's maybe small thing but I feel alive and when I'm there I'm not shy anymore, I don't wanna stay in bed all day and it's best summer ever.
So don't waste your time and follow your dream no matter what.

Take this time to read books on acting (Uta Hagen, Konstantin Stanislavsky, Stanford Meitner, Stella Adler, etc) and get into good physical shape (to endure the long hours) so when you feel you are mature enough (everyone is different, 16 years, 25 years, 30 years, whatever) then you are ready. Educate yourself on the industry. Study “the greats” and study your favorites. Best xoxo

Osric? You're probably not going to read this (I am several months late), but I just want you to know how much of an inspiration you are. I'm sorry, because I'm going to ramble, but it was seeing pictures of you wearing a dress that got me to go up to my parents and ask to wear a bowtie to an event instead of what my gender dictates. It was you who inspired me to step outside of boundaries, to be me, to not listen to the people who hate on me just for the sake of it. There's so much more that you have done, for me and everyone else, and I just want to say: thank you.

I'm at that stage where I realized what that I love to do is act but my parents just think I'm being a silly teen who's dreaming. They want me to have a "Plan B". It will be hard to convince them otherwise, but this video will tell me to always keep trying. Thank you again.

God I love you! I'm 24 and I've been in college for 6 years, making all of these mistakes with what I "wanted" to do, only to find what I "wanted"was what others wanted me to do.
This perfectly fits me and what I've gone through. I've been picked on and made fun of. Beaten down; abusive relationships, lost my father & grandfather (5mos apart; I was my father's caretaker because my mom works so much), and so on. I became a ruin of who I used to be. Not to be cliche, or rhyme, but I was proud to be unique and was not afraid to stand alone.
I've now found remnants of my old self and I'm beginning to piece everything back together, even making some new parts. I'm proud to say "I'm a junior in college! I'm attending LWC college of professional counseling!" You have served as one of my inspirations, Osric. Thank you

I cried. Osric, you never fail to remind me that there are others out there who know how it feels to be looked down on for being passionate about something off the beaten path. In high school, there was a period of time when I wanted to become a professional chef and learn all sorts of stuff about cooking and maybe make an impact in the lives of people who don't have the money to buy all the food they need by teaching them how to eat healthy with the money they did have. My math teacher didn't understand why I wanted to do something like that. Why would I, a student who was surely lined up for valedictorian and Ivy League university, want to waste my talent on cooking? The truth was, I didn't like math. Or science. Or history. What I liked was reading, writing, and any digital media. And so, despite my straight A's in trig, calc, phyaics, and chemistry, I applied to university to study filmmaking and English (the cooking thing didn't last long because I'm not really as passionate about it). And I absolutely love it. But still today, people I meet for the first time give me a strange look or a hesitant, "Oh cool" when I tell them I'm double majoring in English and Film. I can tell they're thinking, "You're going to be waiting tables the rest of your life." And maybe I will for a while, to afford an apartment while I write screenplays or books. But I won't care because I'm working on something that I love and am passionate about and I wouldn't trade that for the world. So thank you Osric. Thank you for being an inspiration to me and to so many others like me, and for understanding.

I've been told for my entire life that I can do whatever I want*. That little asterisk has been such a curse to me. I was told I could do whatever I wanted as long as it was in a safe, unseen, and unheard way. I can't live like that anymore. I have stories in me that have been eating me alive for years. I want to share them with others, get them out of me to make room for more. I want more than the stunted life I've been living. So I'm going to do just that. I will not let myself believe that life is full of possibilities*. I can walk down any path I choose, and what will come will come. No asterisks needed.

I'm in my second last year of high school now, and all everyone asks me is "what are you going to study in college?" and I honestly have no clue. I cried while watching this because so many times, I have told people my dream, and all they say is to make sure I have a plan B. It is so upsetting because I know, I know my dream may be unrealistic, and someone telling me to have a plan B makes me feel like they don't even believe in me. I know for sure that with tons of effort, I can do anything. I have so much talent and things to yet discover about myself and it is people like you who give me inspiration to ditch those plan B or plan C, I wanna stick with plan A, I want to give it my all, not my half because I may not make it, it is a risk I am completely willing to take.

    My eyes are wet... somehow...
You just said everything I feel inside.
When we're kids they show us fairytales, magic, dreams come true etc. and then expect us to stop believing and find well-payed job, build a house, plant a tree and have a son. When young person says "I wanna be ___ !" grownups say that doctors make more money/there's a lot actors/you don't sing that well/you have to finish school before traveling around the world... They say to kids "be yourself" but what they mean is "be what you're expected to be"
ps. you're eyes should be illegal.

A dream is the foundation of yourself, when people push you down or discourage you from whatever, it is there to stop you from falling. I wanna be psychologist, someone who can help others when dealing in hard times. The people around me say I shouldn't that it will just "depress you" or make me a pessimist, but I see it as a way to do something productive with my life by helping others no matter what it does to myself mentally. I'm not in it for the money, I'm in it because I want someone to come up to me one day and say "I didn't give up because of you". My peers might not realize that, they may discourage me as they do but I won't give up. I'm going to do what I want to do, and I am not going to discourage anyone else from completing their dreams! So keep on going! Fuck what people say, they aren't you :)

I want to be a writer. I love how the sound of that word feels rolling off my tongue, and I love describing things like fiery sunsets and quiet evenings under the stars. my fingers ache to feel a pen in my hands and my eyes crave the beauty of the written word. I'm thirteen so I have a long way to go, and develop, and learn. But I'm trying my best to find something practical, my heart just won't let me.

I am not sure why i am writing this but don't change just because others tell you to. I've decided I want to act, for the longest time I had no idea what I wanted to do, then I found that I liked acting, my mum put me down for it, tried to encourage me to pursue the medical degree I thought I'd always wanted, so I obliged, didn't think about it for a while. A few months ago, it sparked my interest again and this time I'll make sure no one persuades me otherwise, if I want to act, I'll act, whether I fail or succeed, at least I'll be doing something I thoroughly enjoy and love. Thank you, Osric, for actually encouraging the idea in my mind, you inspire me, you're an amazing person and a brilliant rolemodel, again, thank you.

+TWD Obsessions The same happened to me and things went hard but I finally could start doing what I truly love so... never give up and do what you like the most, do it for you and you will succeed.

Goddammit Osric. who gave you permission to articulate the struggle I've been trying to work in for the past four years?? I should have graduated with my bachelor's in something respectable this May, but I just can't make myself go anymore. but not because I'm doing anything worthwhile. I'm "saving money right now so I can figure out a plan later." except things keep popping up...like life..and I have no savings or plan to show for myself. I'm not living, I'm existing. and now I'm crying. fantastic.

Osric, this was truly amazing and totally inspired me- You made me realise that I've been so afraid of failing at my Plan A that I made it my Plan B and how foolish and destructive that was, so thank you :)

Osric.. That was so incredibly powerful and eyeopening to watch. I've had the same mindset as you for a while, except I have no ambitions for a career. All I know is that I want to travel and experience different cultures and people that the world has to offer. But wasting my life doing things I don't like is not in my schedule. I'm glad you eventually was able to follow your dreams, and even though you're struggling, I'm sure you will get back on the right track and continue to chase those dreams!
I'm proud of myself and my accomplishments, but I am also incredibly proud of you. And you should be as well, Os!

Wow- this poem is amazing Osric. ;-; Made me tear up bc this is very relatable to what I'm going through in my life right now actually. Life is so hard to figure out when you don't have any solid paths to follow, thinking that everyone else is so far ahead of you. So it's nice to know that there are other people out there like you that things take a little longer to figure out. Just, ugh, the feels. Thanks for this poem & vid Osric.

Osric Chau, you are an amazing and inspiring man, and I honestly dream to be like you. I'm happy that I could support you're 'Proud to be Unique' campaign and I can't wait to see what you do. I hope you continue doing what you do, because I know that you will be amazing at it.

Osric, this poem speaks to me so deeply. I'm sharing it on every account I have. You put words to the deep frustrations and the hopes and fears and aspirations that I think on some level all artists feel. I know I feel it. Thank you for putting yourself out there and sharing this with us all.

Everything in this poem was clearly thought through so meticulously, because every single word matters and reminded me of what is truly important in life. Honestly, that was absolutely stunning. Thank you so much Osric xx

Thank you Osric. Really thank you. I really needed this because of some of the stuff I'm trying to figure out right now, and this made everything a little bit better. Although I cried, it's because I understand it. Thank you for being an inspiration and telling people not to be afraid to take that first leap, and for helping save me when. I most need it. So thank you. I loved the poem, you're so talented and don't lose that.

Wow, this is incredible. Inspiring, but also extremely challenging. Personally, I'm about to start a degree which I do want to do but I've no idea what I want to after it, and all the options for jobs out of it that I've noticed don't feel like something I'd find fulfilment in...
Thanks for making me think, and inspiring me to keep dreaming :P

thanks for sharing this! it made me speechless and made me cry. can so relate to this and i understand how you feel. Beautiful said. 'I just want to be me' : Ive always wanted to fit in and people thinking good things about me, but i wasn't myself by doing that, and since recently i don't care anymore what others think about me. They accept who i am or they don't and i don't care anymore of they don't'. You are my inspiration and you've teached me to try to go out of my comfort zone. I will be proud to wear this shirt and i cant wait for it to arrive!
I am going to start my first year in doing a new education after i graduated for vet assistant and I know what I am going to be, but this is a Plan B (in case plan A wont work out) for a later Plan A. But i really really want plan A to work out,
