Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (SNES) Playthrough

- A playthrough of THQ's 1992 license-based platformer for the Super Nintendo, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was released across all three of the Nintendo platforms back in 1992. The SNES version was the flashy, screenshot-worthy game of the trio, but it's virtually identical to the 8-bit versions in terms of gameplay. (See the NES version here: • Home Alone 2: Lost in ... ).
This time the work was done by Imagineering, the group behind the SNES and Game Boy versions of the first Home Alone, also known for their work on A Boy and His Blob and Simpsons games. While Lost in New York is in no way a "classic" title in any regard, it's substantially better than Bethesda's treatment of America's favorite holiday tale of child abuse and neglect. It barely resembles the movie upon which it is based, but still, the fact that it is playable meant some kids probably actually got some enjoyment out of this one. I did for a brief period of time way back, and it was still reasonably fun to go back and play again for this recording.
The game play is made up of simple, mundane platforming action. The graphics in the SNES game are a strange mixture of digitized photos and traditional pixel art that don't quite mesh together. (Notice how out of place the characters look against the couches, plants, and paintings in the hotel lobby? And what is going on with the tiling of the Christmas tree trunk in the background of the last boss fight?) The sprites are nice and much better detailed than they were in the NES game, but why do the photos in the cutscenes look so bad? They're grainy and they use so little color that nobody would blame you for thinking that you were looking at a Genesis game. The music is also a bit hit-and-miss. The first stage's tune makes me feel like I'm about to have a heart attack, but the park sounds appropriately Christmasy.
Too bad they left out Donald Trump's movie cameo - I'm sure that would be quite a sight on the NES. Any of the system palette's shades of orange would've done the trick, I expect!
It does control well, though - Kevin is far easier to handle than Bart ever was, and the jumping sections are thankfully pretty okay as a result. I'm not sure why picking up a bell gives him access to Samus Aran's screw attack, though.
Home Alone 2 is a game that manages to be fun despite its flaws, just like the SNES version of the first game. And just like the first game, it would've stung to have paid $59.99 for it, but it did make for a satisfying rental.

Is really difficult the game, me the kitchen for some reason the kitchen boss, scares me so much. This game was my Chrismas gift in elementary school. and nobody know in my class, that, this game exists, so I took the game to the school and all my classmates saw it, and where :O really exists AMAZING!!!

The music on the first level is anxiety fuel and the way the ppl walk is very creepy
Yeah, the pixelated Harry and Marv images look like they're constipated while trying to do prank phone calls. That would scare any child.
Me too. It's that creepy music they play when the Concierge (Tim Curry) is talking on the phone. They gave him a particularly creepy face to boot.

The SNES version of the sequel to Home Alone looks and sounds way better than its 8-bit counterparts, and if you enjoyed the original, you'll probably have fun with this one too.
I'm the only person I know that liked this game :P Try out the PC version too, it was short but pretty cool. The graphics were outstanding at the time!
@@PlasticCogLiquid I actually just got here after watching NC's run of that very game! This isn't the worst game I've ever seen, not by a long shot, but personally I find it rather hilarious that Kevin gained powers to turn into Sonic The Hedgehog.
...But not as good as Megadrive version of Home Alone 2....
@@digimaks There's never been a good Home Alone game, people sometimes let nostalgia from childhood blind them. Movie to video game adaptations rarely delivered back then, plenty of far better original idea games made in that time. But as the old saying goes, no matter how bad a game can be, there will always be someone that likes it.
SNES and Genesis/MD had far better games on them than these Home Alone games.

Okay, if I'll give this game any cred, it's for actually being pretty entertaining every once in a while. I really enjoy the variety in some of the levels, like the kitchen, and the traps you actually have to interact with in order to defeat the Sticky Bandits. It's not awful. In fact, it's my guilty pleasure. At least it _tries_ to follow the plot as best as possible, and that's cool. Plus, sliding or Sonic-style jumping into enemies is strangely satisfying. The final battle on the tree is ridiculous, and I love it.
I completely agree. I loved this game as a kid, so I have a soft spot for it and I’ll never dislike it no matter what anyone says.
Man those traps though. I was stuck in the uncles house for years. Oh and it controls pretty nicely to. And there is no falling through platforms as much like in alot of other bad games.
I mean, it is hard. But after awhile, it just clicks. I mean, it is completely playable and beatable to with enough practice.
The hidden turtle dove power up at the beginning of the first level evaded me for years to. The one right at the beginning that gives you the spin jump power up.
There are definitely alot of other movie based games from this era that sucked so supremely bad. Controls are bad. Glitchy. Falling through platforms. Difficulty being way to hard. ETC. This one was a decent balance, and you didn't want to quit.
The basement is where the difficulty climbs a bit in the hotel. That was where I started losing lives back in the day. And it gets a little rougher in central park.
This was a hard game back in the day. I remember being v scared at uncles house. Had a hard time getting past that level.
I must keep missing the part in the movie where Kevin battles living vaccuum cleaners and luggage and on top of that has an entire gang of criminals after him!!

And when kevin was shooting a boxing glove gun at people, and stunning them over and over with the stun gum. Fun times.
And that one gag with necklaces tripping up marv and harry in the movie, it was fun to just throw those at people and knock em out to in this game.
And doing the pete townsend slide and the metroid screw attack was something to behold also. Always loved when you hit people. It had a neat sound effect.

You can actually climb down the scaffolding in the last level. As soon as Marv started to chase after you, go for the scaffolding, press down then you’re safe from him, not even the bats can touch you now. (Yeah, I know it’s strange, somehow Kevin can just climb down the thing) It’s also the only way to kill Marv while he’s climbing down the rope, cause there’s a fire torch at the end, grab the fire torch, and burn down the rope, and Marv will just fall off the building like he did in the movie.
(p.s. all the Playthroughs I’ve seen don’t really do that, I wonder if no one has ever thought of it before…ya know, there’s a reason why there’s a fire torch attached to the scaffolding.)

@@user-qc6wi3dw5x well, just download a rom and play, it’s easier that way. Trust me, you don’t wanna search the entire RUclips just to confirm that trick.

It seems like some Imagineers games had some effort put into them, and then some (like this one) seems like no effort was placed into them. This game has such poor graphics that I thoughts I was looking at the NES version at a few points.
I totally agree with you. After Sega 16bit version oh Home Alone 2, this one is a pure fail. It feels like they made this game in a week. NES graphics, no atmosphere whatsoever. Music is blah....
Check out Sega version just for comparison. The difference is tremendous.

I always have trouble getting the game to register that I want to go down there.
He also missed the bonus stuff at that one part with the couch at the beginning. You can get some stuff at the very top at 3:25. I just find it to not be worth it. It is so hard to jump high enough. And I always get hit losing the power up for the turtle dove. Took years to find that. Who would think to look at the very beginning of the level to find a turtle dove power up.
@@qunt100 it's a spot where you have to press both the left and down button at the same time to get Kevin to go onto the path.
I think I figured out all the items in the plaza hotel even the ones hard to get cuz you take damage. The one secret I still haven't figured out is how to drop the fire to light the rope in "the chase" segment.
I dunno why, but I could never get past the Central Park level when I was a kid.
Neither could I that was another tough challenge.

This game was unnecessarily hard as a kid lol. Only ever made it to the park. Crazy how I remember the graphics being so much better also.

@@JamesDavis-vc4uo seriously lol. Funny enough there were games that were skin peelingly difficult. This game isn't actually that bad when you compare it to other games. It has a strange charm factor to it also. It is hard, but not hard to the point where you want to give up.

Such a fun obscure game. I love using game genie codes and just spamming the boxing glove gun and bazooka boxing glove. They take out just about everything.
I really enjoyed this game when it debuted NC. But what a royal pain it was to play. I mean, it wasn't bad to deal with the quirks it offered, but the characters and objects used to frustrate me to the max.
Man. It took me a while, and it was hard. But I sleep knowing that at least other games were, way, way worse than this game.

Those cutscenes are a mess. Sure they look more like the movie characters, but it looks like they just pasted their faces on the NES graphics.
