  • A playthrough of Interplay's 1994 platformer for the Super Nintendo, Claymates.
I always thought that claymation was so cool. The sheer amount of effort, talent, and resources required to do it well make it something of an rarity, but that just makes it all the more impressive on the occasions that you see it. That goes equally for video games as it does for film or TV: Claymates was one of the first games I had ever seen like it, second only after Visual Concepts' previous game, Clay Fighter.
Claymates is a mascot-style platformer in the vein of Mario and Sonic, and it makes a huge effort to leave its mark. You get several different clay animal characters (with 'tude, of course - it's 1994) that you can switch between by picking up the appropriately colored ball of clay, and each has a special ability - the mouse runs as turbo speed (hence the box's playful notice that the game features "blaze processing"), the duck can fly for a few seconds with a running start, the fish can swim and blow bubbles... you get the idea.
The levels are all designed to take thorough advantage of these abilities, and they are *huge*. You don't have to fully explore them to complete them, but there are tons of secret areas and hidden items for anyone that enjoys exploring - you can easily run out the ten minute stage timer out if you get too absorbed in wandering around.
There are also some novel little puzzles between each stage which I've never seen in another game, before or since. They're fun, light distractions that give you a nice break after clearing one of the huge stages. And you'll probably need the down time, since there is no save or password system. It has to be played from start to finish.
The levels all are pretty well designed and have about a million potential paths you can take through them, but be careful about your speed. It may look cute and friendly, but enemies are bloodthirsty and easy to blindly run into if your are reckless. It is not at all an easy game. I think I'd actually call it a fair draw between Claymates and Plok! when it comes to both charm and difficulty level. And length. And fun, for that matter.
And then there's the star attraction - the game's presentation. It looks absolutely awesome. The player character sprites, the bosses, and many of the regular sprites are digitized images of clay figures, and unlike ClayFighter, since the characters are so much smaller, the animation is far more fluid and impressive to look at here. I particularly loved the bosses - Sam, the giant puppy, was a real standout. Everything has some kind of silly body language or sassy facial expression, and those details lend the game a whole lot of personality.
So does the music, which is pretty incredible throughout. It reminds me of the stuff in the The Lord of the Rings game - the samples are of uncommonly high quality, and some of these songs are total ear-worms. My favorite has to be the piratey theme (fifes and accordions, woo!) that plays during the Pacific area's levels, but they're all good.
I rarely see any mention of Claymates on the internet, so I thought that I would give it a bit of exposure. It's an excellent game that deserves a few more people singing its praises. How does such a well-made game seemingly become all but forgotten?
There is a silver-lining to its lack of popularity, at least. Because nobody knows nor cares about it, even though its obscure, you can find a copy of it pretty cheap. You can get a cart for $10-15 without much problem, and there's even a sealed copy on eBay at the moment for a mere Benjamin. Go on... you know you want it ;)

My brother and I remember renting this game when we were kids, and I even came up with my own idea for a sequel or remake. So nostalgia-inducing!
Fun Fact: The clay animators, Angie Glocka and Owen Klatte, have worked on several other noteworthy stop motion projects, like Gumby, Bump In The Night, and The Nightmare Before Christmas, as well as some CGI and VFX works.

I only went to this link to share how I loved the music. I still do, but it feels like it's in the past, because with a worn out controller and for a while finding only used ones, and with cable with a DVR, I stopped playing Nintendo. At first it was temporary, but I got used to it by the time I got it back. Now, I just enjoy the memories without actually playing anyone.
I loved the music, because I imagined the music as Clayton's view of the environment. He was playful, he was a kid, so he had fun in the yards prior to the abduction of his father. And that although he was in a crisis, he still enjoyed the environment throughout his quest. The style of the music seems indistinguishable to Clayton's joyful childhood mood and personality. But after playing through Japan, Africa and planet Clayvius, I realized that the music in Clayton's yard for example was just a style of American music. Even when it would say- "Clayton's Yard", I thought that the style of the music was an idea of the fun, exciting yard of Clayton. But later, it seemed to me that the music was more like a political welcome style music for kids. Mainly because if in the beginning, just after Clayton leaves the lab, if it said "Welcome to the United States", it would have played the same music as when it says "Clayton's Yard". And even though I also like the idea of childhood fun, joy and excitement, I really liked the idea- "Welcome to the United States". Because then the music would represent the fun, joy, peace and friendship of America. Also representing the joy of freedom compared to let's say... Russia or China. So since I thought of that idea, I have wanted to see such an animation in the game. So far, all I have done was copy and paste letters against the same background as when it says "Clayton's Yard". I like the background title- "Welcome to the United States" better than "Welcome to the USA." Until I finished elementary, I always thought that alphabets also represented or hid through symbolism emotional expressions. With S always appearing to represent the happiest expression.

It's a real shame the backgrounds don't look clay-like, because I do like the digitized clay sprites. I grew up playing Clayfighter: Sculptor's Cut a bunch (so stupid you could only rent that game from Blockbuster!) and loved the style. They should've taken the concept all-out the way The Neverhood and others did, but I do think this is still something I'd like to play sometime and given the fact that they fit this all on a 16-bit system is still pretty cool, what with the high quality, clean sound and fun-looking giant clay boss fights.

You've nailed one of the biggest problems in the game. Not that Sonic and Mario are any better, but this storyline is one of the worst made!
This games biggest problem is simple:
      THE CHARACTERS SUCK!
Our hero (Clayton) has a face I'd just like to punch like Meg Bennett's dipshit "boyfriend" Bim from the Bionic Six (let alone being nothing special), that witch doctor is an unmemorable shit and don't even get me started on the final boss! Bowser, Eggman and Wily would mop the floor with these losers easily! And just wait till what Mario, Sonic and Mega Man do to that Clayton loser. It won't be pretty!
You may not like Bubsy The Bobcat, but there is a good reason why he had sequels (despite his games not being special either, let alone that 3D one killing him for good) and Claymates didn't.
Clay Fighter had memorable characters, which makes it all the more sad at how bad the controls were since that was a fighter I was pulling for back in the day.
If anybody wants to make a fan made sequel to Claymates, then CREATE BETTER MAIN CHARACTERS NEXT TIME!

I rented this there, me and my brothers democratically selected it and then the next weekend my brothers didn't go with the the video store so I got to pick the game, and I picked the game Spanky's Quest - my brothers were furious about it at first but Spanky's Quest is dope as well. Both Claymates and Spanky's Quest are interconnected in my mind now because of all that, getting them back to back like that I really associate the two games together. God it's so nostalgic to see this video because I had basically forgotten about both games until now, I stumbled upon this video by accident because I was watching an earthworm Jim longplay and it came up in the recommended and wow, my mind is just filled with so many things right now that I had not thought about in ages.

From the bonus levels, and the secret ways to warp to the next round, looking at the carnival and a would-be path to it, blocked by a bush instead of another part of the fence, I kept thinking that there was a secret way for a robot to reach and blast the bush and to go to the carnival. I'm surprised not, considering the bonus levels and the design of the picture/animation of the carnival. By the way, I never noticed until now, a chimney just like from Clayton's house, is at the bottom left corner of the field the carnival is in.

So you practice every game before you record them? How long does one game take? How much free time are you giving yourself? I ask this because you are so much better than I ever was, especially at this game. I love the first stage music, though. I used it in my RUclips videos.

    • @NintendoComplete
      @NintendoComplete  5 лет назад +6

It depends on the game, really. I played this one a fair amount when I was younger, but practicing this, i played through it 2 or 3 times to make sure I could reasonably play it for recording. I'd guess somewhere in the neighborhood of 5 or 6 hours total? Some games I can do super quick, others take forever. This was somewhere in between :)

I don't know, you're over-selling this one, I love claymation too and all, but it's a testament to the limitations of the SNES hardware that the game's main gimmick, the fact that these characters are digitized clay models, falls completely flat for me. Because most of the sprites are so small, and the 16 bit graphics are so limited in colors that you can just barely tell they're clay at all. Looking at these graphics, I think it just looks like regular 16 bit sprites rather than claymation. Clayfighter is actually somewhat better with this, because the sprites are much larger, where you can tell they're clay models made in 3 dimensions. Here, not so much.
The only characters that remotely look convincingly like clay sculptures are the bosses. They look excellent! This is because of how huge they are and therefore we see much more detail and the models' clay features are clearer. Other aspects look great too, the planet in the cutscenes and the little formless blue ball you play as initially. The music's nice too.
Claymates is all right, I guess, but I've seen better attempts at digitized models in this era, and with more interesting gameplay to boot.

I gotcha. It was pretty ambitious, and the idea wasn't necessarily ideal for the tech, but I loved it nonetheless. The dog boss and that mode-7 globe totally sold me! :) I thought that it had a ton of charm. I actually liked it a lot more than I did Plok, despite how weirdly similar they both are, and it felt like it had heart. Does that make any sense? Like it was more than a mere money grab, and like the people that were making it gave a shit. That just made me like it all the more.
But what can I say? I do my best to present my ideas in my reviews as subjective opinion and not the word of God or whatever. I presented my evidence and you didn't agree, but I love how that can turn into legit talking about classic games. Gaming is kind of a personal thing in terms of experience, right? If we all found the same exact things ideal, Google would've AI-ed the perfect game and sold it to us a hundred different ways by now, or so I'd imagine. Unless.... *cue X-Files music!* Btw, thanks for being classy in your disagreement. So many people are quick to leap to personal attacks, and it always leaves me like wtf?

Claymates and some other games by Interplay such as Lost Viking 1 & 2 hold a special place in my heart as I played them when I was at the right age for them to make a lasting impression on me.
Even today I still think about these games from time to time and I have been tempted to collect them. Problem is I would probably not play them again or on an emulator and they are rather pricey on Ebay these days. (decent boxed version of Lost Vikings 1 will set you back a $120 and Lost Vikings 2 even more)
(I did actually buy a sealed copy of Claymates as I like the game so much but I don't think I can easily spend so much money on other Interplay SNES games I would like to own; Lost Viking 1, & 2, Rock N Roll Racing, Blackthorne/Blackhawk, Robocop Vs the Terminator, Star Trek Starfleet Academy, and sadly there was no English release of Castles on the SNES)
Other than the colorful graphics what drew me really into Claymates was that you get to play to play a cat and I happen to love cats. I still adore Muckster a lot today and have had some fan art made with him and I am considering having a custom made stuffed animal in his likeness made.
But the game could really be hard sometimes.
I can understand when people say that this game is not as good like for example Super Mario World, for that the game is perhaps a little unbalanced here and there. Still I do think it is one of the better mascot platformers on the SNES compared to many others that were released at the time on the same platform and I do wish there had been a Claymates 2 on the SNES or perhaps the Playstation 1, now everything looking like Claymation.
Heh as for the music, I had forgotten how upbeat it can be.

This game is an obvious rip-off of the obscure Master System game Psycho Fox. Main character can transform into other animals with special abilities.
But Psycho Fox comes with better characters, levels, music, storyline (for what it is) than Claymates. Hell, even Psycho Fox has a better ending despite being a WTF moment. If anything, I'd say Psycho Fox is the underrated one, not Claymates.
