Husband and son are both dead , the first simulation is to get her family back ( I don't know if something went wrong or that she could always remember that this isn't real,or somehow the kid always dies ) but for the second simulation I don't know if it's for them trying to get over their pain (I think this is the case) hence why everyone in the last scene is dealing with something. But why they are in the simulation, I think it's a few things that it could be . 1 to understand the brain to ascend to a higher level ( I say this because Maura said if there's a God wouldn't that mean we're still in a simulation even if they're in the real world)" for the brother 2. To understand the brain so they possibly bring back the people they lost . 3 to make a simulation that people can live happily in or be enslaved in (Maura and then her brother )
@Pete Peppers awakening kate chopin was first published in 1899, I think it important hint for this show since it is a name of the series as well.. we can see this book on the table in first 3 min. of the show
I think the final scene of the season finale is just another "level " of the simulation where they're at, like Daniel mentioned to Maura in an early scene when he says " this was the first simulation we've created " And by the way, i don't buy the side of the story that Daniel is trying to make Maura believe in, just by the fact that she feels those memories aren't hers, so there's a plot twist maybe coming up in the future. My theory is that the first scene of the first episode after the ship, where we see that pyramid in something that looks like other planet, it's actually the destination arrival that's on the final scene of this season.. What do you think? The final scene is reality or simulation?
@@FletcherTheCromenockle obviously it simulation since technology is from mid 20th century.. same like it was on those two ships, shouldnt technology be much more advanced if it was real thing? year 2099 if i remember
I felt that same "oh no" when first watching Dark. Oh no, not time travel. Fiction never gets time travel right, they always mess up their own logic. But Dark turned out to be a masterclass in time travel storytelling. So somehow it seems fitting for them to now tackle another subject that is often messed up: Simulation stories.
I came into this comment section to write the same haha. I generally hate time travel as a storytelling device, because unless you don't treat it too seriously and just make fun of it (Back to the future), it's SOOO HARD to do it right and not mess it up, creating thousands of additional questions, contradictions and a general mess. No kids, just don't put time travel into your stories PLEASE, you just gonna hurt yourself. .... And then Dark enters the room, all in white, what the hell, they've actually pulled it off and done time-travel right!
Remember that Dark added a new layer of reality each season. And they had a plan from the outset which wrapped up perfectly . There could be so much more awaiting us in future seasons!
I think this as well. I'm also willing to bet that protagonists will actually turn out to be antagonists, vice versa, and some characters aren't even real people, but constructs themselves, or simulacrums.
1423 passengers + 550 crew members = 1973 - is that the „real“ year in the end? the look of the computers in Henry‘s office and of the furniture in Daniel‘s appartement and the songs all point to the seventies playing a major role in this… I absolutely loved Dark, and I imagine they have a great plan for this series as well. very excited for future seasons! (edited to clarify my point)
speaking of not being able to understand each other. last month I went to NYC for a concert and when I was trying to find where the subway system was, there was a woman in her 50’s (who I think was speaking Portuguese? I could be wrong) that was having trouble finding it too. I walked with her and helped her by looking at our phone’s maps… all while not opening a translation app. she talked a lot and I had no idea what she was saying lol but we managed to find it together and go our separate ways. it’s very difficult to communicate when you don’t speak the same language but there is a need to help each other that I think this show was showing well. also by doing actions with showing rather than telling that can help bridge a language gap.
I think even the revealed narrative is in doubt. Even Eyk asked how do we know that Daniel's memories are real if he is in the simulation as well. Maura repeatedly says if Eliot is her son why does she feel nothing for him. Likewise there are characters who seem unnaturally drawn to each other - Maura and Eyk, Olek and Ying Le, Jerome and Clemente, and Kester and Jose. Maura's "father" makes a declarative statement about what a weakness emotion is and shows of this kind always fall on the side of emotion, especially love. I believe that the real narrative will be found through the love these characters have for each other.
I'm wondering if Henry is even real. He seemed pretty cold and detached. And yeah, I realized early that some of these characters seemed drawn to each other despite being strangers. There's more going on than meets the eye. Much more.... Some of them suddenly started speaking English in the finale. I think Eyk might be Maura's husband. They seemed to have this attraction to each other. Lots of unanswered questions....
At the same time they also mention the simulation is changing shape after what Daniel did to it so maybe the setting reveal at the end is nothing more than a re-contextualization of the Prometheus ship.
I agree that it's a tricky challenge to work with a simulation trope, but I think they'll pull it off. I liked this show way more than Dark. It moves at a much quicker pace and answers enough questions for me to feel satisfied at the end of the season while also setting up new questions enough so that I'm looking forward to season 2.
I wouldn't be surprised if Elliot's consciousness was transferred into a computer or something. And I think Eyk might be Maura's husband. They seemed strangely attracted to each other. And I'm glad I wasn't the only one that thought that computer screen in that final scene, didn't look that futuristic. I think they're still stuck in a simulation. And was it my imagination or did certain characters suddenly start speaking English in the finale? And why were all the montage songs from the same era? Late 60s/70s.
@MasterOnion North in the end of episode 8, she says, " Will you be there when I wake up?" And he says " always" he also isn't in the last scene. In the flashback, you see them being a family in the first simulation. Not only that, he said they both created the second simulation, but nothing about the first simulation. She most likely created the first simulation to get her family back, and once the son died she they then created the 2nd simulation to make sure that he wouldn't. They are also hinting that they are not real by saying, "If that was your real son or husband, wouldn't you have feelings for them?"
Exactly, 1960s songs, I asked myself that question. I think it all has something to with the fact that humanity seems to be unable to work together. Which might be dangerous.
Another few things to consider in the final scene in the space ship, the coordinates given are like for a 2D location on a map where space is mainly 3D, a location in space would require 1 more number. Also their bodies are not in cryo chambers, only their minds in a simulated reality but their bodies would still age, and how would that be useful for long distance trip in space?
I love a slow burn. I guess others wouldn’t agree but I love the anticipation and the excitement of wondering what the heck is going on and what is going to happen next. Obviously I love 1899 and I still hope someone will finance the second season. I would if I had the money.
What if the memories, which we see the characters enter, really happened in the "correct" time (so, somewhere between 2050 to 2099 for example) and the simulation took those memories and traumas, and put it into the context of 1899. For example, the Captain's wife and kids were burned in the old country home. But maybe, and this is just maybe, what really happened was, that they were actually burned, but in a way that would make no sense to a person in 1899. For example, dying in bomb or nuclear fire, being on a spaceship which gets trapped in the suns orbit and falls into it, some other technology which equates to "dying in flame". Just an idea! But it would mean that all those memories we got to see are true memories recontextualized by the simulation. And so they ultimately matter to the story moving forward.
From a writing perspective it makes no sense to throw out an entire season of storytelling and we have not even really seen Olegs and Ramiro/Angels memory. I do think that the ones paired together have real life connections and their traumas are all real to some degree and the reason why they wanted to forget their real lifes. With most of them that works somewhat easily enough you just need to change the setting they occur in.
I think the show is about lost explorers trying to find earth again. The alchemical symbol for earth is an upside down pyramid with a line drawn across it. That symbol is all over the show. Also every passenger is written a letter telling them what is lost will be found again. Them crawling inside those dark holes represent how many times the ship(s) have entered black holes and now they are lost. The ships main quantum computer AI needs everyone’s brain linked in a simulation to form a hive mind so that it can figure out how to navigate the black holes the ship has gone through to find a pathway home to earth. The different simulations are just the number of times the AI has tried to find that path. I say ships because there will be a Kerberos space ship as well as a third space ship we have not been shown yet. Maybe Prometheus and Kerberos made it through one black hole while the third ship is either lost or left behind. Or maybe it’s the other way around and the third ship is the key. The villain doesn’t want them to find earth again for what reason I have not figured out yet. Daniel is definitely not Maura’s husband. He might be the brother and the captain is the husband. Or Daniel might be the AI represented as the father/husband/child Or maybe the space ships are just the next simulation 🤣 I need season 2, need to know what happens.
1899’s ending reminded me a bit of the brilliant but unfinished ending of the Netflix series the OA starring Brit Marling, Emory Cohen and Jason Isaacs with the reality jumping. I don’t think it would mean that when all the others will be woken up, it will essentially nullify the plot happens before. Because what they went through in the simulation can overflow into the reality, and can bring changes in the dynamics between the characters. Maura said in the series that the memories of all the characters in the simulation are connected, but as to why they all speak in different languages and are unable to communicate with each other, I thought of a quote of Anna Karenina: All happy families are alike, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way. My theory is that the same applies to the characters, because all their miseries are not interconnected, thus can’t be expressed in words or speech, and that’s why they are all speaking different languages
Another great video pete. The final shot of episode 2 gave it away for me, I kept saying please dont let this be another simulation twist, and I was at first let down when it was. Episode 5 confirmed it for me when the tunel to the mental hospital was revealed,.I mean doors opening in mid air, how could it not be. But then the simulation twist wasn't confirmed until the later episodes, but it came as no suprise at all. It defo didn't hold all the suprise twists like dark. I can still remember my jaw hitting the floor when the stranger revealed himself as Jonas, but 1899 never gave me that o-m-g moment that could match it, or any of the other twists from dark.... after leaving it a couple of days to let this show sink in, I like it more, the more I think about it, but the ending just reminds me of DARK CITY 1998. Im guessing that season 2 will be called 2099 which is the name of the simulation code that they're now trapped in. Yes I think they are still in another level of the simulation "a glitch in the matrix" with the space ship being the replacement for the steam ship. Maybe we wont see the real world until the end of season 3 just like in dark, maybe the real year is 1999 right in the middle, the year the matrix was released? Who knows. Lets just hope that they're all not players in an online virtual video game. Look forward to more videos on the small details and I definitely think this show deserves a second watch.
Definitely the opposite for me the dark plot twists were extremely predictable from the start there was no jawbreaking moment but with 1899 it seems a lot different and im grateful they improved their storytelling
Thank you for being the only person in the comments section so far who has brought up Dark City which I consider one of the most underrated films of all time. I just binge watched all of 1899 and I felt like this show was trying really hard to capture the ambiance of Dark City but it failed because it was too drawn out and trying too hard to keep things mysterious. We didn't really learn much about any of the characters for all the time spent with them...all we know is their "past" trauma which may not even be real. As soon as they mentioned simulations I couldn't help but think of The Matrix, and was annoyed by a lot of similarities to the Matrix franchise such as Plato's allegory, the White Rabbit, Black vs White injection instead of red pill vs blue pill, destructive corruption in the program (In Matrix franchise it was embodied by Agent Smith) and Maura's father being very similar to The Architect character. There was also the same kind of revelation that the simulation has been looping endlessly and nobody has been able to break out of it, but love might finally break the loop. I probably need to watch it again, but there were many points where I got impatient with filler. Like they revisit places multiple times and don't do anything. Or they start off in one place, then run off and get turned around, something ineffectual happens and they come right back to where they started and none of this moves the story forward at all. The passengers turning into zombies and throwing themselves off the ship was a completely obvious and clunky plot device to whittle the story down to our main players. At first the corruption seems to be threatening everyone and they use it as a way to have an excuse for a chase scene towards the end, but then suddenly it's not a danger any more. And if it's a simulation, how is there even access to the computer system within the simulation? How do we even know that the "computer" was real, or that the sim was "reprogrammed" at all? In conclusion I felt that this season was weak. If it was all just a setup for future seasons, that honestly makes it even worse because it shouldn't take 8 hours to set up a premise. Maybe I am just spoiled because I watch a lot of Star Trek, and they've had countless episodes that explore virtual realities, the holodeck, dreaming while trapped inside a stasis chamber, etc and they can manage to explore the subject quite profoundly within the constraints of an hour long show.
After reading Jantje Friese interviews, I think we have met Ciaran - either it's Eyk or some other character and I believe he might not be actual creator. Like Adam in DARK, the creator might be Maura herself. And here too, like in DARK, the motivation for the actions of characters is to save their children
Given how Tannhaus narrated the first season of Dark and we eventually find out he created those worlds, Maura narrating thr beginning of this series could be a clue. Then again, this would be too obvious.
my speculation is that Elliott himself is henry but old, especially thinking about the cynicism henry is putting into Elliott just like Adam did with his younger self in dark, there is a lot of resemblance and parallels between 1899 and dark, may be it is one.
Woohoo I'm glad you made a video about this season. I hope you get into more details & theories in future videos. I enjoyed this show, not quite as much as I did Dark Season 1 but it's hard to compare them because they are different combinations of genres. Some of the aesthetics & the use of threes (fleet of 3 ships, all the triangles...) reminded me of Dark. I also remember being let down at where Dark S1 ended, but also intrigued at where the story could go from there lol. So the finale gave me similar vibes. You're right about the not very futuristic looking screen. That seemed off to me, and also the song choices from the 60s/70s.
Well, since the series is called 1899 they either would have to return to this year being oblivious about what happened in season 1 or season 1 was the actual end. In my opinion season 2 wouldn't make any sense at all.
How is this satisfying, there was such a lack of purpose in what was happening. I want to think everything happens for a reason in a simulation but why was the simulation made so harsh on each of them. Lack of purpose made me angry.
This is definetly a setup for something much bigger. I realize that I missed so many details after watching your analysis. Thanks for this videos as always. The main difference from Dark is that I don't have the same eager to see the next season as I had after the first season of Dark. Maybe because I don't feel attached to any of the character in 1899 yet
I was joking after the second episode that all this was just a simulation that got out of hand and now they are all trapped in it. I was genuinely shocked and kinda mildly amused that this came true at the end. I guess that season 2 will reveal a much darker history of the Prometheus and her crew...
Nice recap, Pete. Yours was the first video I sought out after I finished the series. One thing that struck me was the closing song of each episode. There's some significance to these songs, but I'm not sure what. As some have mentioned, the songs are of a similar era, but The Killing Moon came out in 1984. There has to be something behind their release year though. Perhaps the songs and episode titles have some tie together? Assuming this is a simulation or altered reality, are these dates tied to the characters actual reality? Birth dates, death dates?? This is definitely something about this show worthy of a deeper dive. So many questions. How do these tie together? Episode 1 - The Ship White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 1967 Episode 2 - The Boy Child in Time - Deep Purple 1970 Episode 3 - The Fog The Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen 1984 Episode 4 - The Fight (Don’t Fear) The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult 1976 Episode 5 - The Calling The Wizard - Black Sabbath 1970 Episode 6 - The Pyramid All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix 1968 Episode 7 - The Storm The Wind (Of My Soul) - Cat Stevens 1971 Episode 8 - The Key Starman - David Bowie 1972
I feel like the real question should be: Why were people who couldn't speak the same language all put into the same simulation together as strangers, and if they weren't like that when they went in, why did the simulation make them unable to communicate?
1899 this series is strange we begin with a trip on a boat of intriguing characters in search of a new beginning. A distress call from the Prometheus to a missing ship. The end of the last episode we could make our theories, everyone has to imagine the continuation of MAURA's journey freed from the simulation.
The computer that Daniel programs in episode 8 and drives down from the hatch in the ceiling in the machine room is a quantum computer - they look like this. They can calculate different realities simultaneously in the superposition. For long space journeys, it is assumed that it is best to put the crew into a twilight state (dream state) - in other words, into a kind of simulation, because otherwise they would not be able to endure the long journey mentally, and quantum computers might be suitable for calculating the dream state in real time. But then ethical questions arise, i.e. what is real and what is simulated. Perhaps the quantum computer does not transmit correctly and always has to be restarted or has not switched off in time. One detail: The coordinates of the ship Prometheus correspond almost exactly to the coordinates on the spaceship.
One thing to consider in the show the characters are in a simulation for the mind, but their bodies are not in cryo chambers does that mean their bodies will still age? If so whats the point of that space travel? Is it a loophole? or is it a plot point ?
has anyone noticed how the characters wear the same clothes throughout the entire show? Also, Daniel looks drenched continuously. Clemente's flower on the collar also looks like a kraken...
I really loved watching 1899. Is it as good as dark? Probably not but that's an extremely high caliber to hold. I did feel connected to the story and the characters the whole time and of course the ending left even more questions but I'll happily wait for season 2 to get them! Great breakdown I really enjoyed this video
The brilliance of the show is that for all of the complex rabbit holes you fall down, all of the theories you conjure and examine...none of it really matters because it's just a spaceship's Ai stimulating the brains of its passengers on a long space flight. The lighthearted note reading "may your coffee kick in before reality does" confirms this for me. It's just a simulation and there's nothing to read into it.
I liked it. I thought it was some sort of simulation but the fact that is on a space ship threw me for a loop. I thought all the passengers where in a mental hospital. and the simulation was some way of processing their trauma. Created by Henry of Maura. it can still be the case.
At 8:04 we see a device used to hack and control aspects of the simulation. Its a steampunk style version of the 15 puzzle which apparently was invented and marketed around the 1880's. *It's a derivative of the jigsaw puzzle because the goal is to display the proper picture with each piece in its proper place. *In video game versions the final 16th piece appears when the puzzle is solved, like the way the boy appears perhaps? *Half of the puzzle starting points are impossible to resolve. *Reference points of number position placements allow the player to know if the current positions permit solvability or not. *Solutions range from 0-80 moves. *"God's algorithm" is an optimal solution via the fewest possible moves, presuming an omniscient God could calculate such a configuration. *And, if looking at the cast of characters for the show there are 16 of them, one for every space on the puzzle board.
Not gonna lie, from the series poster I thought this would have something to do with the mysteries surrounding the Bermuda Triangle. Turns out that was a red herring, probably intentional.
I think the ending scene in space ship is also a simulation. Also since her brother has taken over the simulation there's a strong possibility that this would be another simulation. And this is another survival mission.
another thing to note, the mission coordinates given on the screen in the space ship could not be for space, space would require another number. The coordinates seems like it is for maps on earth, on google map it is middle of the North Atlantic Ocean between a trip from London and New York like the trip The Kerberos was making, but why would a space ship use those coordinates? Make of it as you will.
@@operatorlink just like the ship had door ways underneath leading to memories, similarly this spaceship might also have doors leading to land and memories. Theres so much to think. In the space ship her husband and child still missing...two empty pods!!!
Just finished watching & immediately came to your page to hear your take on things. You are my 1st & favorite go to for series analysis!! Always appreciate your commentary Pete. As far as the show, I felt it dragged & the payoff was disappointing. Loved Dark & expected more with 1899.
I think the place Maura landed in the final episode was another simulation. My guess is she's eventually going to go back to the 1899 one to break out of the loop she/they are in. I also think there's some significance to her being somewhat drawn to the Captain. Daniel is claiming to be her husband but she doesn't seem to think he is. It could be a construct of one of the simulations. The Captain was dreaming of losing his family, perhaps Maura is actually his wife and they have been torn apart in this. Notice too how Daniel quickly sent the Captain to the Prometheus when he was with Maura and she was seemingly about to get to the bottom of it all with him at the asylum.
Can someone help me understand - Who created the ship simulation - Maura, her father or brother? What was the father trying to do by getting the key - restart the loop or end the loop? I thought at one point someone said it's a key to end the loop; but when the father used it, he intended to restart the loop??? Also, since the father said "Maura has everyone trapped in this simulation", shouldn't he be trying to end the loop? Why did Daniel start the killing spree on the ship? Why did Maura make herself forget about the key?
I think the point of the ship loop is to push humanity to evolve to make decisions out of logic and not emotion. Potentially emotion (love, hate, anger, jealousy…etc) is what pushed humanity to its downfall and now as they all travel to another planet, the ultimate goal is to evolve humanity away from that by changing how we think, perceive, and respond to the situations we are faced with. Maybe the only way out of the simulation is to make the correct decision and sink the ship, as they are told to do. This is the ultimate logical decision free of emotion. Henry says our emotions are what hold us back. I think it’s all a big experiment for humans to be better than we were before, and those who succeed can move on and colonize a new livable planet and not destroy it like we did earth.
1899 is the best show I have seen all year, so detailed that I needed to watch it a second time. Every character is perfectly constructed, has flaws, has desires, The human mind is a hell of a machine.
@@fedepetit Ya I have, fortunately it has not been cancelled, so I am really looking forward to viewing it when it comes out this year :) Severence is the second best, I love everything about 1899 though, the fantasy, sci-fi, the visual-development. Severance is AMAZING but it is more of a Drama/Mystery and although I love the visuals as well, I really like the VFX and the staging with 1899.
Didn't love the show but I was entertained, overall pretty good. I guess we'll never know what S2 was going to bring, becaise its been canceled. Way to go Netflix !
My theory is either the simulation had a bug in it which caused Maureen to fall in love with Daniel and have a child. Having a child is the key word here cause it's a simulation and nothing outside of the programme is supposed to happen. Or, the simulation had something like an Agent Smith to stop people from exiting. Which would be Maureen's brother Ciaran. Or both, maybe. Anyway, I'm excited.
Whatever else turns out to be true, I think that every character (including Daniel and Elliot) that is shown to wake up from a dream and experience past memories are real people who are alive (or at least as real as Maura is).
I think we arrived in 2099 and the next Season will be called that! So I think it will just be another Simulation! So where does the Simluation lead after that? I think I have it! There is some Music in the show that doesn't fit the 1899 or 2099 timeline... but it would fit right into the 70ies of the 19th century hence 1999! (Someone grewing up with them would be 20-30 in 1999) So I think it will ultimately end in a triology, making 1999 the last season! The Song examples: White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 1967 Child in Time -Deep Purple 1969 Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen 1984 The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult 1976 The Wizard - Black Sabbath 1970 Adding on top of that! the episode names are so vague! I wonder if the episode names just repeat with a different meaning! I mean in the first Episode of Season 2 we will start again with "The Ship", because we are on a Spaceship! So maybe in Season 3 1999 we will Land of a Modern Boat (or a flying ship?) on the Ocean again!
Why did Maura's husband kill the Danish girl, the first person, who died on the ship? It was heavily implied that he did it, he apologized to her first. Which means all the other people dying later could be because of him as well. And we never find out how they died exactly or how the hell it could have benefited him.
Glad someone asked this bc it was one of my main nagging questions finishing season one--why did all those ppl have to die and yes it heavily implies he killed the little girl and therefore all the others
The twist at the very end was unfortunately very predictable. I do love this show. It reminded me of the movie Triangle quite a bit. One thing I did not understand: Why did her husband tell her to hurry up with turning the key (ring) because her brother might notice the code change, when her brother then actually welcomes her in reality with a note?
I thought the main twist was actually when we realise the true creator of the simulation (near the end of ep 8). In general it all being a 'simulation' wasn't very shocking & it's not particularly original, however that doesn't mean the writers can't offer a unique take on it much like they did with time travel with Dark. I suppose we'll see if they manage to do that in season 2... Regardless it's still a good show, quite flawed but I think it's got a lot of potential, I feel like this season is moreso setting fundamentals & establishing characters etc & hopefully in season 2 they can really rev it up.
The thing is that the ending is actually the same situation as the beginning. Maura wakes up on a ship with a message from her brother and it's the 19th even though in the simulation there have already several days passed since then meaning no time passed or the simulation is for some reason two hundred years ago but like eight days later. A space ship in the middle of nowhere just like a steamship out on the ocean when communication technology was limited is basically the kind of walled of surrounding where a very limited space can be used to fake an entire world, because nobody questions why they can't leave or call someone. So maybe he did notice and already took precautions.
the ending of this reminded me so much of the game Soma where humanity escapes to the stars in a seed ship that stores the remainders of humans minds/conciousness in a simulation.
I think that the first hint of the idea of them being inside a simulation, and that reality may not seem like it is, took place long before the end of the second episode. If you pay attention during the first ten minutes of episode one during the scene in the dining hall, you will hint that the characters raised their coffee cups at the same time in coordination with Mrs. Wilson , and this is an obvious glitch.
I was drinking tea while watching that episode and I did the same thing as the characters, even the sound of the teacup hitting the saucer synced perfectly. does it mean I am in a simulation lol
The tea drinking, the 60s music, the boy dressed like the Beatles, the mainframes in the father's office, the fact that they couldn't exist in space without being frozen, etc.... - this is an LSD experiment in the 1960s.
Seems like the chaos it caused was necessary for him to pull off his plan. Not sure why she was the only one from the family that wasn't on the ship at the end. Krester died too but he was there.
This is my main question. Also since he killed her it heavily implies he killed all those other people they found the bodies of and then had Olek toss overboard
I remember after the Matrix Reloaded came out in 2003 there was a popular theory online called Matrix within a Matrix where the 'real world' was actually just another layer of the Matrix and there was an actual real world beyond that. Of course, Matrix Revolutions proved this theory wrong, and I was massively disappointed, but I'm wondering if that's what's going on here- 2099 is just another layer of the simulation and future seasons will give us 2199, 3099, 4099, etc.
That actually occured in Simulacron-3 a science fiction novel from 1964, in the seventies there was a two part movie adaptation of it by all but legendary german director Rainer Werner Fassbinder so you can basically assume that the creators know it and elements from it might appear in their own simulation storyline.
that utility closet looked to house a quantum computer which could imply entanglement to multiple other simultaneously occurring/related simulations separated by space-time... also, curious if you're a fan of william gibson books, are you watching/enjoying peripheral on amazon?
Applause for dividing the video into *Chapters* 👍! I pity the Channels who do _not_ do this on videos where it would be _sensible._ [EDIT: Immediate typo correction]
We have to keep in mind, that the whole brain fucking complexity of the plot in Dark uncovered itself only after Season 1 was completed, and resulted in an absolutely stunning WTF-Climax in season 3. There is still so much possible, so let's hope for Netflix to approve a 2nd season. I think Jantje and Bo still have a lot up their sleeves.
You didn't tie in the names of the ships: Kerberos: the guardians of the gate, (the three headed dog that guards the gate to Hades), and Prometheus: the God of fire. "Prometheus is best known for defying the gods by stealing fire from them and giving it to humanity in the form of technology, knowledge, and more generally, civilization" (That was a quote from Wikipedia) I watched a one and half episodes and kept wondering how the ship names tied in. I really liked Dark and may go back to 1899.
Oh!!!! I commented before I watched the whole video, and when you compared it to Dark and said 'what we know is a drop what we don't know is an ocean' and commented the questions being asked.... Maura was told a couple of different times by her 'father' YOUR STILL NOT ASKING THE RIGHT QUESTIONS.......
The hint at alchemy could indicate that there is no real world but a world that created it self by experiencing it also it represents one of four elements = 4 seasons? Also the symbol in the eye was a different one not earth but water / or fire depending on the rotation - fire would fit because Prometheus is the fire bringer.
The longer it went the more frustrated me. I love a good mystery show and Dark was one of the best ones I've ever seen - but 1899 is so afraid to reveal *aynthing* that it keeps its cards so close to its chest that even by the end of this season basic foundations of the narrative are vague and unclear - which results into many of the twists and events having no emotional impact. If this show doesn't get picked up for a second season then all we got were 8 episodes of nothing but teases that amount to very little.
@@lewis0705 there will be 3 seasons, not more not less. They have already written the ending of the story, so there are no important question left after the series wrapped.
Só que a Netflix não cumpriu com as três temporadas! Cancelou, deixando os fãs da série sem continuação!! Não se pode confiar na Netflix 😡 ela cancela muito...eu por fiquei com raiva e cancelei a Netflix 🤮
The synchronized tea drinking kind of gave the simulation or drug induced experiment away and of course the "wake up", which reminded me of "Open your eyes" in Vanilla Sky. Great production values, characters, score, and it was wonderful hearing Pietschmann flip from German to English so fluently, but at this point, storywise, it doesn't reach the level and originality of Dark for me.
I guess the first simulation was made by Mara to save her son Elliot (like in "Dark" whole mess was because of need to save loved ones). But then, her creation was taken by her brother for "greater good" to save humans in future. But in the greater simulation, there still was some kind of source code made for Elliot which is causing corruption for the whole spaceship virtual reality existing to keep passengers alive before they reach their destination (I guess the new planet humanity can live on). And to be honest, I don't want to see this 2099 future is just another layer of simulation, because it is so cliche and obvious in many simulation-based stories. Even if it could be logic or interesting through another seasons. It is just so common in the sim-genre to "surprise" everyone with another layer later in the stroy...
I don't know if it's actually 2099 but you have to believe that reality is certainly much much further in the future than 1899 in order for the mind to even conceive of a space craft with that level of technology and capability
I’m I the only one who thought about the Dante’s Devine comedy? The upside down pyramid, different levels terrace of limbos is the symbol from Dante’s inferno. Every sign points to that every character is already dead, going through prugatory. Kerberos/Cerberus the name of the first ship and the dog that guards the gates of the underworld, Prometheus the name of the second ship and the name of the titan that got punished for defying the gods by reliving his horrible death every night for the rest of his eternity. This show is about limbo, guys.
Episode 1 I fall asleep and continued it the following day... Episode 2 I fall asleep and continued it after 30 minutes same day than before I go to episode 3 I decided to come here and listen to your views before I sleep the entire season
Daniel is full of crap, those memories aren't real, she even says that it doesn't feel like her memories, he's planting them. He's the major twist of the show
I keep thinking about what happens in a summation. Could AI partner with a real person and create the kid who exists as an AI and in the organic mind at the same time so the boy can not exist in the real world but is not fully part of the old world can memories of a person metastasize and create an independent AI like the main character's father. Can the members' prior memories be part of the simulated experience the autocue before the journey to America portion trapped them in the time look that was not intended to be a loop in the simulation to keep their minds active during the space journey?
Watching this movie is like a constant kick on my cognitive dissonance because the casts spoke different languages but they act as if all other casts can understand each other (acting like they listened)..
I think at the end they might still be in a simulation. I don't think Maura woke up , she is still in a simulation. And as you said their memories are most likely manufactured and not real but at the same time it is real to each and every one of them. For all we know, they are not even real people. Just a computer program, now that would add even more layers. This started out strong and stylistic but kind of started to fade for me by the end. It did't seem they knew what to do near the end so they just filled it in with whatever and lost their way.
Definitely not as good as dark or even close BUT it was very well done, makes you think a lot, and i'm pretty happy with this being what came from the same producers.
I think this series will continue off where the FX series, Devs, ended; if you can create a perfect simulation there's a near 100% chance you are already in a simulation.
My favorite response. At the end I felt very used and taken advantage of my intelligence that I watched the entire series. The writers may have had a good time but I certainly did not. I could have gone to the park and picked up doggie do do.
The more I think about it the more I like it. I've got a lot of questions, what about you? Let me know what you think is going on.
I think just like Dark, 1899 theme is about a paradox. Specifically “the brain in the vat”
Probably like 3 realities or something
I think this as well. I'm also willing to bet that protagonists will actually turn out to be antagonists, vice versa, and some characters aren't even real people, but constructs themselves, or simulacrums.
🤔 there really wasn't a new layer of reality introduced from season 1 to season 2 of Dark, just from season 2 to season 3.
@@brandonreed09 true. Just more time periods in season 2
The creators have said they need 3 seasons to tell the whole story. And they know how it will end.
1423 passengers + 550 crew members = 1973 - is that the „real“ year in the end? the look of the computers in Henry‘s office and of the furniture in Daniel‘s appartement and the songs all point to the seventies playing a major role in this…
I absolutely loved Dark, and I imagine they have a great plan for this series as well. very excited for future seasons! (edited to clarify my point)
its the total number of passengers and crew.

Didn't I see that this series was canceled?
I can’t believe it’s canceled, I literally just finished season one 😢
speaking of not being able to understand each other. last month I went to NYC for a concert and when I was trying to find where the subway system was, there was a woman in her 50’s (who I think was speaking Portuguese?
There's no question that we can't take everything Henry and Daniel said at face value.
@@HopelessEvenings Possibly...
Correct.
Dark will never happen again: it was a perfect mix, so well executed. It's a gem.
No both Maura and husband and son are dead
@@chosen1337 We don't know that. Everything is still up in the air and open for interpretation and speculation.
Great to see Maester Quiburn made it out of Wesrteros! He looks great in 1800’s garb.

@@gmonorail funny thing is, I was watching both shows simultaneously. And I still do not remember his name 😋

I love a slow burn. I guess others wouldn’t agree but I love the anticipation and the excitement of wondering what the heck is going on and what is going to happen next. Obviously I love 1899 and I still hope someone will finance the second season. I would if I had the money.
I'm gutted they didn't continue with more seasons of this show. Damn you Netflix and your greed!
My thoughts exactly, I don’t think all the memories shown this season was all for nothing either
Or Daniel might be the AI represented as the father/husband/child
Or maybe the space ships are just the next simulation 🤣
I need season 2, need to know what happens.
love this theory
Perfection!
There will be no season 2 sadly
Must have been watching a different show to the rest of us
Thank you for being the only person in the comments section so far who has brought up Dark City which I consider one of the most underrated films of all time.
Where you been Pete?? We miss you bro , your break downs are serious...
After reading Jantje Friese interviews, I think we have met Ciaran - either it's Eyk or some other character and I believe he might not be actual creator. Like Adam in DARK, the creator might be Maura herself. And here too, like in DARK, the motivation for the actions of characters is to save their children
Well henry already said that maura is the creator so thats not a theory
Given how Tannhaus narrated the first season of Dark and we eventually find out he created those worlds, Maura narrating thr beginning of this series could be a clue. Then again, this would be too obvious.
my speculation is that Elliott himself is henry but old, especially thinking about the cynicism henry is putting into Elliott just like Adam did with his younger self in dark, there is a lot of resemblance and parallels between 1899 and dark, may be it is one.
I think they want to save earth.
@@nerevarchthn6860 Maura's voice tells people to wake up. That point to her being in some position of power.
I wonder if it's similar to inception and there are different levels of consciousness or they are trapped in a game being played by aliens
I loved that if the series ends here, it’s rather satisfying. But it can continue for sure
Well, since the series is called 1899 they either would have to return to this year being oblivious about what happened in season 1 or season 1 was the actual end.
In my opinion season 2 wouldn't make any sense at all.
There will be 3 seasons of 1899.
How is this satisfying, there was such a lack of purpose in what was happening.
I want to think everything happens for a reason in a simulation but why was the simulation made so harsh on each of them. Lack of purpose made me angry.
You did a great job at wrapping up this complicated season 👏 well done. 😋
Shame Netflix has zero sense and cancelled the show....
I was like “they all are in a video game “ from episode 1, basically I wasn’t too far away from the whole thing, lol😂
The moment i saw everyone drink the tea synchronously in the dining hall, i knew for sure this is a simulation, but not in the exact way.

I feel like the real question should be: Why were people who couldn't speak the same language all put into the same simulation together as strangers, and if they weren't like that when they went in, why did the simulation make them unable to communicate?
That's part of the reason I ended the recap with what Henry kept saying to Maura about not asking the right questions.
@@PetePeppers1 I found myself looking into Tower of Babel references.
To make it harder for them to work together
1899 was superb. Will watch again and again. I take no issue with simulation theory.
I’ve never heard of this series. I need to check it out.
stupidest comment i read today.

The creators are great. I'll watch anything they make until they're done.
YES... i was so hoping for you to get on 1899 to see some of those nice nice reviews
I‘ve been waiting for your review since the trailer was released. Great to hear you now!!
I started watching this show this AM - just because I enjoy your recaps! I'm halfway through and loving it. Thanks for pointing the way on this one.
Can someone help me understand -
Who created the ship simulation - Maura, her father or brother?
I think it’s all a big experiment for humans to be better than we were before, and those who succeed can move on and colonize a new livable planet and not destroy it like we did earth.
nice theory. ♥
1899 is the best show I have seen all year, so detailed that I needed to watch it a second time. Every character is perfectly constructed, has flaws, has desires, The human mind is a hell of a machine.
its good but the peripheral has it beat, imo
Then you haven’t watched Severance
The Song examples:
White Rabbit - Jefferson Airplane 1967
Child in Time -Deep Purple 1969
Killing Moon - Echo and the Bunnymen 1984
The Reaper - Blue Öyster Cult 1976
The Wizard - Black Sabbath 1970
Adding on top of that! the episode names are so vague! I wonder if the episode names just repeat with a different meaning! I mean in the first Episode of Season 2 we will start again with "The Ship", because we are on a Spaceship! So maybe in Season 3 1999 we will Land of a Modern Boat (or a flying ship?) on the Ocean again!
The name of the show "1899" doesn't refer to 1899 the year... It's the last scene.. day 18 of the year 99 (2099)
Why did Maura's husband kill the Danish girl, the first person, who died on the ship? It was heavily implied that he did it, he apologized to her first. Which means all the other people dying later could be because of him as well. And we never find out how they died exactly or how the hell it could have benefited him.
Glad someone asked this bc it was one of my main nagging questions finishing season one--why did all those ppl have to die and yes it heavily implies he killed the little girl and therefore all the others
@@stee8345 This is a simulation, so she doesnt died. Daniel use his arrow key - tech thing to deactivated her.
@@Paul-qz7pu But WHYYYYYYYY?
Triangle is such an underrated and unseen movie
the simulation thing wasnt the reveal. we basically already knew that since the ending of ep 2. the main twist was that she is the creator
@@lewis0705 I am not convinced she actually is and I don't think the little boy is actually her son
Too bad we'll never know now. Thanks Netflix.. not.
the ending of this reminded me so much of the game Soma where humanity escapes to the stars in a seed ship that stores the remainders of humans minds/conciousness in a simulation.
@@juliapashkovskaya113 omg you are in the simulation, wake up !!!
@@juliapashkovskaya113 wake up (whispering)
The tea drinking, the 60s music, the boy dressed like the Beatles, the mainframes in the father's office, the fact that they couldn't exist in space without being frozen, etc.... - this is an LSD experiment in the 1960s.
I really love this show. Plus that banger sound track is chefs kiss!
Is this gone for good? wiII we ever have the compIete story at Ieast in written form or something Iike a track the creators had in mind to deveIop it?
Why did Daniel lure Ada with the beetle then kill her?
Seems like the chaos it caused was necessary for him to pull off his plan. Not sure why she was the only one from the family that wasn't on the ship at the end. Krester died too but he was there.
Maybe he knows that she is a part of the simulation, or that if you die in the simulation you don't die in real life?
@@litteralyjustsam5262 Let's see if Ada turns up on the Prometheus in series 2.
Is peripheral worth watching?
@@minuishaq631 yes it is
Applause for dividing the video into *Chapters* 👍!
I really liked Dark and may go back to 1899.
why are you not covering the peripheral?! its the best sci fi since the expanse , even beating raised by wolves imo(barely), hope you review it!
Well, we've all bitten into the apple now we're on for the ride!🤯😵💫
“MAY YOUR COFFEE KICK IN BEFORE REALITY DOES”
How did I miss the spaceship? What episode was this
There will be three seasons of 1899 / 2099 / 2299.
This is how I felt after watching it as well.
1899 was a 3 season deal with Netflix. The story is already done before showing the first season.
wdym? lol
The walls in her cabin have the triangles on them as well. (Visible to the left of her at 13:19 in this vid.)
The narrative has nothing to do with the ending which makes it more perplexing than a closure/explanation.
Anyone notice the painting in the background in the ballroom? I am sure it has some meaning. Looks like people standing at the entrance of a vortex.
A great video, Pete
This is pretty much exactly how I feel about the show, articulated very well. :-)
This series has elements from all of Titanic, Shutter Island, Inception, Dark and The Matrix.
I don't know if it's actually 2099 but you have to believe that reality is certainly much much further in the future than 1899 in order for the mind to even conceive of a space craft with that level of technology and capability
I have streamed this entire season 3.times and it is strange and very good
All programmers are watching this are feeling like gods.
Pandorum vibes
Episode 1 I fall asleep and continued it the following day... Episode 2 I fall asleep and continued it after 30 minutes same day than before I go to episode 3 I decided to come here and listen to your views before I sleep the entire season
It definitely picks up after the 1st 2 episodes. I thought they were slow also but sooo glad I stuck with it
its a 3 season plan so this season is the first act of the story.
It didn't hit like Dark did, but still interesting watch.
Is this related to the movie Prometheus(2012)?
They managed to stick the landing with time travel, so I trust them to stick the landing with simulation.
I actually liked the simulation aspect here. It worked well. Dunno how season 2 works though
Agree.
"if you can create a perfect simulation there's a near 100% chance you are already in a simulation." ♥
My favorite response. At the end I felt very used and taken advantage of my intelligence that I watched the entire series. The writers may have had a good time but I certainly did not. I could have gone to the park and picked up doggie do do.
For me, this show was a lot of of build up and little pay off. I found myself not caring even when things started to be revealed.
I kind of expect the fact that they encountered the Prometheus to be some kind of bug. Because should it not be archived?
