As a german, what blew me away the most about Dark was, that a german "TV"-show can actually be good. All you usually get here are uninspired, cheap, badly written, casted and acted shows about police investigators in big citys (then they're unrealistically hard and grim) or in small villages in the countryside (then they're cartoonishly silly). Same for doctor series.

There is no show that hit me quite as hard as Dark’s 1st season - it was a complete breath of fresh air. And there’s no show that managed to expertly close its story like season 3, though it starts by introducing lots of new elements that have you thinking “there’s no way they can resolve all of this in 8 episodes” until episode 7 happens.. there’s a good reason I binged the whole 3rd season in a day.

The thing I love about Dark is that it looks like a plot-driven show on its surface, but it functions extremely well as a character study. Every character is so perfectly constructed, and every performance is impeccable. Some of the best TV acting there is. From Jonas' tragic flaw of going ever darker to fix things, to Hannah's deep seated insecurity, to Claudia's single-minded pursuit of answers, you see that the cyclical timeline is borne by their predictable humanness as much as it is by the time machines.

DARK is without a doubt my favorite show of all time. I had it on my watchlist around 2019, so I knew it was received very well. But my biggest regret is that I didn't get around to it for about 2 years later. I think it was mainly because I had never watched a non-english show before, so I was hesitant watching it, thinking it would lessen my viewing experience. It wasn't until after watching Squid Game, that I remembered DARK. And since Squid Game was a non-english show in which I enjoyed, I had no problem entering DARK afterwards.
And oh boy, that experience was such a pleasure! I watched the entire series in 8 days, and since then I've seen it a total of 9 times. DARK was one of those shows that I found on my own. No one recommended it to me, and I didn't see the reviews of the show until after I had decided that I was going to watch it. So now, enjoying DARK as much as I do, I genuinely feel proud of myself for finding this underrated gem. I'm fascinated with time travel, specifically The Novikov Self-Consistency Principle (the one DARK uses), which is how I found DARK in the first place. So because I already knew how the time travel worked in the show, I sometimes could call twists before they even happened. But even while knowing, this show always had me on the edge of my seat.
I always recommend this show to my friends and family - and for the ones that listened have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have the same background on my desktop at 0:55 and a DARK replica of the Saint Christopher's Pendant to remind me of the show every day. I am very much excited for 1899; I've heard great things about it!
Edit: For anyone that loves DARK: Go check out the r/DarK subreddit. And if you want a great show to watch that was great from start to finish and has a similar vibe as DARK, I would highly recommend The Leftovers. I was recommended the show about a month ago by many people on the r/DarK subreddit, and since then I've finished it and loved it just as much as DARK. If you decide to watch the show, just know that it's kind of opposite to DARK in the way it deals with answering questions. While DARK gives you an answer for everything by the end of the show, The Leftovers is about coming to peace when not having all the answers. I'd recommend going into it blind, just as I did; you can find the show on HBO Max. Happy watching!

@@sonal_she_her595 it’s out now. I watched it and I don’t want to compare it to Dark too much but there were similar themes and still something completely new. I loved 1899. It has the same vibes as Dark, it’s super confusing and it has a great cast. The thing I love most is that we have all these actors from different countries speaking different languages. The musical score is amazing, the costumes and the set designs are very detailed and look great. I think that the series does a great job at exploring the minds and struggles of the different characters. There is a lot of symbolism like in Dark but maybe with less recurring dialogue bits. Instead they shove a lot of triangles in your face. I really loved the first season!

I think the reason people hated the Lost finale was the pacing. Half of season 6 was taken up by flashes to an alternate world that we were led to believe had a different purpose, but just padded out the runtime for episodes. All the relevant plot points in the afterlife-world could've happened in each episode's pre-credits scenes, or in just one full episode, and the "why" of it was never explained. Dark actually stuck the landing because their alternate realities had distinct purposes, and the origin world was the answer to the "why" of the whole show.

The thing is it's set in Germany and was created by Germans and if they would have created a show in a foreign language or set it in a foreign culture a lot of nuance and character would have been lost. As a German I'm used to everything being dubbed in my language but I discovered early on that anime is a lot better when you watch it in Japanese with subtitles. For me watching something different to my own culture in Its original language only enhances the experience and if many Americans can't access media if it's not pre chewed to their needs it's pretty sad but doesn't mean we all have to cater to that.

What I love about Dark is that you can clearly see, that the writing was done and completed before shooting the seaons. Unlike in other shows, where it's obvious the writers are just adding up and building up the story as they go. Dark on the other hand, already set all of the scripts, the plot, the arcs, which is why seasons feel connected and congruent. It doesn't feel like oh it's the next season, the writers add this now, they retconed this character, they forgotten that one arc they had. No, Dark was a series where the plot, the climax and the ending was finished well before shooting. And that's one of the reasons why when you watch it, the story feels so complete and well connected. Nothing is retconned and no arc is thrown away.

I think that how this show leaves you sitting on your couch with mixed feelings is exactly how this show should end, and ends.

I've heard good things when Dark first aired and decided to download the episodes on my phone. Looking back, I'm so thankful I did that. haha. I never really got to it until one time, I was stuck in traffic in a company bus. I fell asleep and when I woke up, still stuck in traffic, I couldn't go back to sleep and decided to watch something on my phone. Finished an episode, it was so intriguing and interesting that I decided to binge watch the remaining episodes on the way home. I convinced one of my roommates to watch it. When new seasons were about to drop, we always had discussions. I also re-watched the whole 3 seasons. I have been recommending it to friends. Now, I am convincing my sister to watch it, I even downloaded it to her phone. haha. Right now, I am on the 6th episode of 1899, and I hoping it could be a good show too.
