In another timeline Netflix had cancelled Dark after the first season but I went back in time several times and fixed the problem, with a many, many murders, so your all very welcome.
As a german, what blew me away the most about Dark was, that a german "TV"-show can actually be good. All you usually get here are uninspired, cheap, badly written, casted and acted shows about police investigators in big citys (then they're unrealistically hard and grim) or in small villages in the countryside (then they're cartoonishly silly). Same for doctor series.
@@JFKJrJrPlanetX Hilarious when you think about it, that multiple actors from Dark play(ed) mediocre written detectives in a cringe show for old people.
I'm from Poland and I remember watching a show called "Cobra 11" or something like that as a kid. I absouletely loved it back then, but I understand what you're talking about, even in 2022 most of the Polish shows on TV feel like they were not only scripted, but entirely generated by AI 😂
There is no show that hit me quite as hard as Dark’s 1st season - it was a complete breath of fresh air. And there’s no show that managed to expertly close its story like season 3, though it starts by introducing lots of new elements that have you thinking “there’s no way they can resolve all of this in 8 episodes” until episode 7 happens.. there’s a good reason I binged the whole 3rd season in a day.
That's exactly what I was thinking, the more complicated things got! I was afraid they'd wreck the series with a terrible ending. Dark shot all the way to my favorite series ever.
12 Monkeys (the tv show) has also one of the best closing /ending of its story, if you like timetravel shows, and it came out in 2015 and ran for 4 seasons
The last season was terrible. Are Jonas & Martha supposed to be so retardly gullible throughout the series due to all the inbreading!? What are your thoughts on Westworld?
@@skeven0 Yeah, 12 monkeys was also insane with all the twists and time travel, although it's a bit different than dark. Both are super super complicated which I love, but I found dark to be a better show and just more interesting. I have to watch 12 monkeys again though, it's been a while.
Just throwing this out there for anyone who wants to watch Dark but is put off by subtitles, Netflix has an English dub for the ENTIRE series! I had the honor of voicing Jonas in English, one of the proudest moments of my acting career. GREAT video dude! :)
This makes the cancellation of 1899 even sadder - it had as much potential as Dark's season 1, now with higher budget and Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friesen being a more established duo. Yet it gets cancelled despite being in the top 10 for a month, and shows like Emily In Paris get renewed 🙄
Think I've got a solution. Emily wins tickets to a cruise and is suddenly a passenger on the 1899 boat. The next season of Emily does x can also be 1899 season 2. Of course, Emily is a background character with no lines. She plays a mute.
Originally I was introduced to Dark by a family friend, and boy I'm so so glad I watched it. One of my favorite shows of ALL time. Some of the best casting I've ever seen.
The thing I love about Dark is that it looks like a plot-driven show on its surface, but it functions extremely well as a character study. Every character is so perfectly constructed, and every performance is impeccable. Some of the best TV acting there is. From Jonas' tragic flaw of going ever darker to fix things, to Hannah's deep seated insecurity, to Claudia's single-minded pursuit of answers, you see that the cyclical timeline is borne by their predictable humanness as much as it is by the time machines.
Dark is definitely one of the best, if not the best, show I've ever watched. You're absolutely right about having to pay attention at all time. After finishing the series I watched multiple recap/theory videos on RUclips until I finally understood everything fully lol
The only bad thing about Dark for me was that if made me feel so dumb. Everything made sense but I couldn't exactly understand it either. Such a good show, too good even.
I wouldn't worry. How well you can understand or comprehend a show isn't completely indicative of intelligence anyway. The show is amazing though, and incredibly complex. Definitely one of my favorite shows ever. It might be my favorite actually.
Having a plan from the beginning to the end, is THE reason why it's a good show. As you said "everything has been planned and thought through". There is no "we make one season of something and see how it goes" and then suddenly you have to think about how to continue so that it makes sense. I totally agree one of the best, captivating and mind-blowing shows ever made!!
Dark's ending traumatized me, in the best way possible. The whole show is phenomenal, and one of those rare cases where an already incredible show ALSO stuck the landing 100%. The writers had a vision, they planned it out down to every little detail for 5 years, and then followed that plan to the letter. German efficiency at its finest.

@@thelobster7277 No they were not, 12 Monkeys ( the tv show) wich came like 2 years before Dark and ended in 2018 with 4 seasons, and was planned completely during season 1
@@skeven0 dude 12 monkies tv show was based on the movie from 1995 (brilliant movie, watch it). And before that was terminator, and before that was a bunch of science fiction writers in the early to mid 1900s who wrote short stories about time travel that inspired the movies and shows we have today.
As incredible as the show is, I like you also just have to marvel at the casting. I genuinely don't think I've ever seen such consistently AMAZING casting, it is actually ridiculous how well they did. Just another incredible moment of care and attention to detail that makes this show a masterpiece.
Dark is the only media I've ever seen or read with an actual proper ending to the time travel problem. The whole show was great, but the ending was a masterpiece
As a Dutch viewer with a lot of friends all over Europe, I can tell you that most people whose native language is not English, love subtitles on English shows. Even if our English is actually pretty good, we still tend to want subtitles. Probably because we're used to it from when we learned English by watching American movies as kids :P
I was working for a music publisher that licensed one of the songs for Season 2. My colleague told me how great the show was and I put it on a list and didn't get round to watching it until this year. I literally binged all three seasons in about 4 days, top tier writing and extremely satisfying experience.
As a german myself I refused to watch the show for the longest time because, just as you said, it was german. When I came around to actually giving a try I felt incredibly stupid for having been so biased. This show sucks you in and you just can't look away once you star. Thank you for covering this show with so much love!
If you expected it to be similar to Tatort, Dark would have been a waste of time. Thought the same. Now Dark is my go to argument that German productions can actually be amazing.
I personally think Dark is the greatest mind-fu*k ever. I didn't think much of the show until I started watching it recently in January of 2023 because I kept hearing something about it on various RUclips channels. I watched the entire 3 seasons in 4 days with English sub-titles because I wanted more and more. This show is simply mind-bogging good. All fans of Sci-Fi should not miss this gem. All other time-travel shows in the future will be compared with Dark. It's that good. Simply amazing in how your brain gets screwed.
Yeah, it's one of my favorite shows as well. It actually leaves me TRYING to find something similar to it that I haven't seen since I love mind bending type things. It's hard to find anything like it that compares, and the things that do I have already seen anyway. Hopefully something new and awesome is made soon. I haven't found a show that I binge watched and just loved every second of it in quite a while, at least not to the point of dark.
@@billj4525 , OK, I can honestly recommend another show (not about time travel - I think?) which is equally perplexing and intriguing. This show got me hooked from the 1st scene of 1st episode. The show is called "From" by MGM+. It's incredibly suspenseful and scary. I highly recommend it. Another show is "1899" by the same producers of Dark.
I saw Dark 3 times. First saw in English so I could pay attention to the families. Then went back and watched again in German for appreciation of the language. Absolutely mind blowing. Best series on Netflix still!😊
"...there's no getting up to do the dishes or switch the laundry over." Okay, that is so very true. I once had to run out my bedroom to grab some chips and soda & had to start the episode over from the few minutes I missed. That was I think towards the end of season 1. True story.
@@thethriftytypewriter yas! LOL! At least ur mom seems to dig the show too... I can barely find anyone in my circle to even give it a chance! Because by the finale, I was bawling alone in my room and can't even tell anyone who can relate... 😂
This show has impacted me in such a way that if I ever have a son. I might want to name him Jonas. The name Jonas is actually a variation of the Greek name Janus, who is the Greek God of gateways, portals, space and time. I'm sure that's why the producers gave him that name

Remember the scene where Agnes is meeting Doris Tiedemann for the first time? Doris apologizes that her husband, Egon, wasn’t there because he’s a police officer. The next statement she says is (I’m paraphrasing): “He feels he’s responsible for all of Winden”. I thought about that statement and went thru the family tree again in my head. With the exception of minor characters & the following (and their older lineage): Katharina Jana Peter Inez Tannhaus …. Egon is the father, grandfather, etc… for everyone else. He truly is responsible for all of Winden!
DARK is without a doubt my favorite show of all time. I had it on my watchlist around 2019, so I knew it was received very well. But my biggest regret is that I didn't get around to it for about 2 years later. I think it was mainly because I had never watched a non-english show before, so I was hesitant watching it, thinking it would lessen my viewing experience. It wasn't until after watching Squid Game, that I remembered DARK. And since Squid Game was a non-english show in which I enjoyed, I had no problem entering DARK afterwards. And oh boy, that experience was such a pleasure! I watched the entire series in 8 days, and since then I've seen it a total of 9 times. DARK was one of those shows that I found on my own. No one recommended it to me, and I didn't see the reviews of the show until after I had decided that I was going to watch it. So now, enjoying DARK as much as I do, I genuinely feel proud of myself for finding this underrated gem. I'm fascinated with time travel, specifically The Novikov Self-Consistency Principle (the one DARK uses), which is how I found DARK in the first place. So because I already knew how the time travel worked in the show, I sometimes could call twists before they even happened. But even while knowing, this show always had me on the edge of my seat. I always recommend this show to my friends and family - and for the ones that listened have thoroughly enjoyed it. I have the same background on my desktop at 0:55 and a DARK replica of the Saint Christopher's Pendant to remind me of the show every day. I am very much excited for 1899; I've heard great things about it! Edit: For anyone that loves DARK: Go check out the r/DarK subreddit. And if you want a great show to watch that was great from start to finish and has a similar vibe as DARK, I would highly recommend The Leftovers. I was recommended the show about a month ago by many people on the r/DarK subreddit, and since then I've finished it and loved it just as much as DARK. If you decide to watch the show, just know that it's kind of opposite to DARK in the way it deals with answering questions. While DARK gives you an answer for everything by the end of the show, The Leftovers is about coming to peace when not having all the answers. I'd recommend going into it blind, just as I did; you can find the show on HBO Max. Happy watching!
Because I scavenge Netflix for everything "time travel related" I think the algorithm pointed me to the series way back in 2017, on its debut week. I was visiting family for the holidays and got to watch it in January 2018 and was immediately blown away (by how good it was) and disheartened by how little "the internet" was talking about it. I went a full year with only scrapes here and there since the show didn´t trend until after season 2 (if my memory is correct).I remember the "finally!" feeling I had back then... yet I think this show does not get the appreciation it deserves. Not even close
This show is something else, I remember watching it for the first time and thinking what a masterpiece it was. I always try and recommend the show to whoever will listen and have gotten a lot of friends and family to watch it and they are never disappointed. Ever since the announcement of 1899 I have been so excited to see what they produce next and am so happy were less than a month away from the release.
@@sonal_she_her595 it’s out now. I watched it and I don’t want to compare it to Dark too much but there were similar themes and still something completely new. I loved 1899. It has the same vibes as Dark, it’s super confusing and it has a great cast. The thing I love most is that we have all these actors from different countries speaking different languages. The musical score is amazing, the costumes and the set designs are very detailed and look great. I think that the series does a great job at exploring the minds and struggles of the different characters. There is a lot of symbolism like in Dark but maybe with less recurring dialogue bits. Instead they shove a lot of triangles in your face. I really loved the first season!
@@sonal_she_her595 Similar to 1st season of dark, 1899 also builds up slowly and takes it's time to show characters with an element of mystery. Personally, I like such shows which demand your attention first and it pays of at the end. For me, music of 1899 is not upto the level it should have been, I remember watching dark and becoming obsessed with songs and bgm but that was not be the case here.
@@sonal_she_her595 Ya I binged 1899 in the first day I was happy with the story and concepts being introduced. I know its only the first season so I still hold Dark higher but knowing that the story is made for 3 seasons Im excoted to see where it goes and if it does take the number one spot as my favorite series. There is always a bigger picture and there are so many things that still dont make sense but know they all will by the end of it.
What makes Dark so good? In simple terms: Writing, casting, cinematography, music. And like everyone else I wasn't prepared for that ending, and what an ending it was.
Dark absolutely blew my mind. It was so well written and so complex. I don’t know how they managed to keep track of all the timelines but there’s no doubt a lot of thought was put into this series. One of my al time favourites.
Thank you for doing this! Beautiful essay and completely agree with everything. Dark literally changed/ tweeked my brain in a way I can't quite explain. It made me look at things in life a different kind of way. It had a profound affect on me like no other piece of media ever has..and I'm no spring chicken lol It felt like a piece of art I'd been waiting my whole life to experience. Don't have the words to describe my level of excitement for 1899! I worship at the alter of Baran and Jantje ❣️
Dark is a timeless masterpiece. After so many years finishing watching the show, I still occasionally type "Dark" in the RUclips search line hoping to feel it again and again.
The best show ever made, period. Challenged by only a few. No other show has such perfect production, acting, editing, direction...AND makes you be an active viewer trying to figure out the puzzles...blowing your mind each episode.
Dark is one of the best experiences Ive ever had regarding tv-shows. I watched it in German for full immersion and I would definitely recommend it, the whole team did a phenomenal job with this project
Dark is the best show I’ve ever watched. It’s hauntingly good…I still get goosebumps when I think about the story. And it’s set the bar soo high that I’m unable to enjoy other great shows cos they don’t come even close to the perfection that was DARK.
Dark will always be one of my favorite shows ever, they just absolutely nailed down every aspect perfectly and now with 1899 around the corner I can't wait to get mind fucked again.
Just finished watching 1899 and yet again the creators of The Dark never fail to amaze me another uniquely made and a legitimate masterpiece. The creators of the show theyre in a complete whole level unlike in hollywood or korean shows. They stands out among the rest. Waiting for season 2 to come.
I am a german and generally not proud of what kind of series/movies we produce... But then this one comes out beeing one of my fav of all time and suddenly I see that germans can actually do good stuff. I usually also watch in the native language, so it was really awesome to for once in a while have a really good original sound design in german. This was just awesome...
@@jarkachalmovianska7812 Der Goldene Handschuh was kinda boring for me... Idk I have seen worse and also its pretty slow and the characters are all just disgusting (which might be good for some), so i dont feel any connection at all to that movie.
Dark was absolutely perfect and is up there as one of my favorite shows of all time. I've watched it three times so far and am currently watching 1899 now. I also watched Dark auf Deutsch because I took 5 years of German when I was in Middle/High School and was very eager to see what I remembered. I love the language, so it was just really enjoyable to watch such a smart, well thought out show and brush up on something I had learned so long ago.
Definitely a masterpiece, once it concludes you realise how the whole three seasons were intricately planned out from the beginning. I remember watching the first season and it was like layers of an onion being peeled back one after another, going deeper and deeper all the time. It's a shame that some people won't watch it purely because of the subtitles, that's their loss really but I think this show would have been a big worldwide hit if it had been English language.
To be fair the fanbase of Dark is huge thanks to Netflix, even the 12Monkeys TV show that was in english and started 2years before Dark with aired on Sci-Fi channel was intricately planned from its first season and is also a time travel show that also has so many layers thats gets better with rewatches
The thing is it's set in Germany and was created by Germans and if they would have created a show in a foreign language or set it in a foreign culture a lot of nuance and character would have been lost. As a German I'm used to everything being dubbed in my language but I discovered early on that anime is a lot better when you watch it in Japanese with subtitles. For me watching something different to my own culture in Its original language only enhances the experience and if many Americans can't access media if it's not pre chewed to their needs it's pretty sad but doesn't mean we all have to cater to that.
I just have to give that my favorite episodes mostly come from the first season. I loved the scene from the third episode showing characters in their past and present circumstances, I loved the scene in which Jonas reads the letter from Michael/Mikkel, and I _really_ appreciated Louis Hoffman's acting in the scene when he's in the bunker, begging the stranger to let him out and crying that he just wants all the bad things to stop-phenomenal acting.
Found your channel earlier this week and have been working my way through your channel, enjoying everything I've watched. Then I find out you speak such high praises of one of my favorite shows ever. You're a top tier creator in my eyes.
I don't think I have ever seen a better and well crafted show as Dark, everything is connected and not just in a dull way but in a deep complex and profound level. I love how the creators said the show's nearly every character takes the decisions they make because of love for their family or lover, even the origin of it all, with H.G Tannhaus trying to time travel to save his family is also an act of love. Such beautiful and precious show really, could talk about it for days.
I regularly stop movies an hour in, I watch 3 episodes of a show and decide it's not worth my time...This is one of the few shows that held my attention and completely immersed me into it's strange lore. The show is a masterpiece.
I'm German and sadly, telling people here it's a German show also makes them lose interest. Which is understandable to some degree because most German movies and shows are just rubbish or very mediocre. It really is a rare gem of a German production.
I just finished this show last nigh. My wife and i went in "blind" without knowing much about it. I think its one of my all time favorite shows. Toppped GOT due to the ending. On Par with BB and BCS on IMO.
I think the reason people hated the Lost finale was the pacing. Half of season 6 was taken up by flashes to an alternate world that we were led to believe had a different purpose, but just padded out the runtime for episodes. All the relevant plot points in the afterlife-world could've happened in each episode's pre-credits scenes, or in just one full episode, and the "why" of it was never explained. Dark actually stuck the landing because their alternate realities had distinct purposes, and the origin world was the answer to the "why" of the whole show.
I rarely watch a series twice but Dark was one exception. It was amazing the first time I saw it and phenomenal on the second watch. I often recommend this show to my friends and family.
I am so grateful to be alive at the same time as Dark and 1899... Dark is perfection... Baran and Jantje are creative genuises... I will never stop loving Dark.
I’m so glad you covered this show, I’m very happy that the creators of DARK were quick to create a new series which will be 1899 which I’m so goddamn excited for! Dark is easily one of if not the best tv show I’ve ever seen. Better Call Saul and Breaking Bad are tough to decide if DARK is better or not but they’re all so amazing
Buddists believe we are all traped in this cylcle. Its called samsara, the "suffering-laden, continuous cycle of life, death, and rebirth, without beginning or end. Because of karma, attachments and desires, it leads us on the same path again and again. Until we break the cycle and achieve nirvana. I got the same vibes from Dark. They achived nirvana in the end❤
I can't believe how well cast the characters were. Every different age. Facial structures even. This was so enjoyable bc of the puzzle. I didn't have to figure it out. I just kept watching.
Only criticism I have is your comparison to Lost. Christian explains it to Jack very bluntly. Everything that happened on the island happened and was real. The world of the “flash sideways” in the last season was fake and just some sort of purgatory type realm where they all waited for each other After they had all lived their lives after the island and all had passed away except Hurley maybe. Also, Lost was the antithesis of Dark, it was a show show that made shit up as they went along, abandoned storylines, filled with continuity errors and plot holes. Dark is the opposite of that.
Damon Lindelof would be the guy copying the Dark's plots but never finishing an episode. He is fantastic at posing a mystery question. Problem is its just a magicians trick. Dark even uses this device of magic for its core concept. Yet lets that trick and question expand endlessly. It's not a frustrating answer. Its a thought provoking answer in Dark. Lindelof got better, Watchmen is a show where you can see he put conclusions to his stories faster because the conclusions had no legs for anything further than that. So props to him for learning better but it really shows how empty his storytelling process is and why LOST was such a disappointment to so many.
I’ve been told that the very last scene was added by the network, over the objections of the showrunners. That was what really blew it for me, the beach with plane wreckage but no people felt like a loud, unmistakeable “NOBODY ACTUALLY SURVIVED THE CRASH!”
The moment I watched the end of Lost I was just lost. It was like swimming for a life jacket that wouldn't hold you up. Dark didn't make questions without a clear interpretation that was well set up.
It’s amazing when tv shows actually know where there going and are planed from start to finish before it’s even started. So many shows today get renewed and they try to add fluff because of how popular it is and want as many seasons as possible.
Same here, it took me a long time to figure out it’s an issue for some people! I remeber watching a Norwegian movie with English subtitles when I was like 12 (English is not my first language) because I wanted to see it so bad and it didn’t bother me for a second! Ever since I can remeber at least like a half of the media I’ve been consuming was not in my native language, I would miss out on so many incredible things if I let it discourage me
best way to watch this show is to wait for native country pro dub, thats what i did, all 3 seasons dubbed was such a treat to watch ,for this complex tv series reading subtitles it pain, need to focus on stuff on screen while understanding words from dub. hell netflix even has dubbed eng version, yeah its not as good as to hear pro dub by native language but its something and i bet russia, india, spanish speakers had their dubbed version, just search your native torrent sites etc
I watched it both dubbed and in original with subtittles - I usually watch things in their original language with subtitles but I watched it dubbed with my mom and while the dub wasn’t bad - I enjoyed it much more in original. Personally, I would give it a shot in original and switch to dub if you have a hard time following it
@@saram3152yeah agreed, i watched it in the original and in the middle of season 2 i wanted to see what dubbed was like and it was terrible compared to the original. I feel like if youve watched it in both you know that the original is much better
I was slightly hoping for the end to be Jona and Martha's appearance in the real world time line being the reason Tannhaus' family wrecked. At the very least its an alternate ending that will live rent free in my head.
Watching Dark for the first time was probably the single greatest viewing experience Ive ever had, Show or movie. I randomly picked it up after finishing the last season of Lost in Space (certified stinker if you ask me but its dumb fun) and the contrast between that goofy little show and the sheer fucking excellence put on display in the first season of Dark blew me away. everything about it is great especially the music and sound design which is what initially drew me in once that incredible title sequence rolled. TLDR, the Dark wiki was one of my most trafficked sites for about a week last year.
based on release dates dark would likely have finished filming season one when stranger things season one released so any similarities could only be coincidence
Living in Germany, I can assure you, that it is mind-boggling how bad TV shows and most actors/actresses in them are here in Germany, and then Dark comes along, a worldwide masterpiece with stellar casting. Dunno, it‘s as if the whole German TV Universe just waited to give birth to this outstanding show. I am still flabbergusted by the whole thing.
That’s exactly what I came here to recommend. I watched this and immediately thought, “I wonder if he’s ever watched 12 Monkeys?” For anyone who loves Dark you should consider the SyFy show 12 Monkeys to be a must see. It’s another beautiful, brilliant masterpiece of a show that doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves.
@@RebelDavis indeed, scrolled way to far down to find a 12monkeys recomendation, and its started 2 years before dark was on netflix! what a difference a Streaming site VS television channel does to craft a fan base
Dark was one of my favorite shows ever. I don't understand the unwillingness to watch something because of words on the screen. They taught me how to read with my face as a child. If you don't use it you lose it or something. I've been watching foreign films and shows for years, many times they end up being better the the normal American shows/movies that pass for entertainment.
This show is absolutely incredible and in my top 5 favorite shows of all time. When it ended, I remember getting a sheet of paper and trying to write down the whole family tree and all the connections lol. I spent hours just thinking about everything. I think it's time to watch this again. Great video.
Dark was one of those shows that made you lay awake at night pondering its existential questions. And when you woke up in the morning, you thought about it some more.
I'll be watching 1899 one episode per week. I have a feeling that the thread count will be high enough that each episode will require substantial rewatching to get the full effect.
I am used to subtitles so I can be called blessed. To watch something in original language is the right way. I agree that the cast if Dark is outstanding. To me one of the best shows I have seen and while watching it is best.
Yes you're absolutely correct this show is one of a kind. For me the best part was listening to the German and reading the subtitles. I get upset when people say I don't like it because I have to read subtitles but what can we expect from poorly educated Americans
As a German, I am proud of this series. I think it's a shame that too many viewers are put off by the fact that it's a German production and should give it a chance.
Its very convenient for me as a german that my favourite show is german. But it was still quite confusing, i cant imagine how confusing it must have been to watch with subtitles.😶😶😶
In what country do they watch it with subtitles? I watched it in my own language, I didn't know they spoke in German. I thought it was in English the original. Dark with subtitles is almost impossible to watch, it is already challenging, you have to watch carefully and listen and remember a lot of details in order to understand it. Dark is the best intellectual and sci-fi series on netflix. It's like they combined my two favorite series: true detective (the best intellectual series but only the first season) And Fringe (time travel).
This is by far the greatest show ever produced. A true masterpiece!! I originally watched it in German while reading the English subtitles. I also watched it dubbed over in English. I think many English viewers would greatly benefit from watching Dark in its original language (German) and then a second watch in English.
I watched it a few time with the English dub (I’m an English speaker) so I could figure out what the heck was going on, plot wise. Once I had that down, I started watching in the original German with English captions because the inflection of the actual actor is so much better than the people doing the English dub! And there are a few things that were hard for me to understand without looking them up, like the “Raider” candy bar wrapper. Those are called Twix in the US! 😆
@@pamelalansbury94 I was the opposite way around! I discovered Dark only because I was learning German and I wanted a show in the language. I watched each episode with German audio three times: first, with no subtitles; second, with German subtitles; and third, with English subtitles. I got about a third of the content with each viewing. Halfway through episode 4 it dawned on me that I was watching something special. I got a notebook and went back to episode 1, taking notes as I watched. And yes, Raider was a plot point because it's a brand name that was used in 1986 but not in 2019.
this is a MUST WATCH IN GERMAN with english subtitles. i've tried it with the english dub and it is diminished greatly as it absolutely loses the nuanced acting of the original actors. watching with the actors' own voices is incredible.
I never really watch anything more than once, but I’ve watched this show entirely many many different times. It makes more sense each time. Such an incredible deep story with master actors. Hands down my fav sci fi series of all time and I’m 48. The downside is I can’t get anyone else to watch it because they say ‘i don’t like to read subtitles’, then I say ‘the dubbed version is great’, then they say it can’t stand it when the mouths don’t line up with the sound’. I try to stress how amazing it is to everyone, literally one of my friends out of 20 actually watched it, and he loved it just as much as me. It’s a MASTERPIECE.
Dark is one of those rare shows that are just perfect... never believe anything else.

Tatort😩
@@JFKJrJrPlanetX Hilarious when you think about it, that multiple actors from Dark play(ed) mediocre written detectives in a cringe show for old people.
Don't you dare disrespect 'Mord mit Aussicht'! :D
I'm from Poland and I remember watching a show called "Cobra 11" or something like that as a kid. I absouletely loved it back then, but I understand what you're talking about, even in 2022 most of the Polish shows on TV feel like they were not only scripted, but entirely generated by AI 😂
German direction and writing is stuck in (their theatrical) past.
The ending is fucking beautiful. So happy with how it ended.
That's so random. Weird how this comment flew under the radar. Good job. I haven't watched it in English, but still. That's cool
No way. Nice to see a voice actor in the comments. Thanks for your hard work
Just finished it and you voiced Jonas perfectly 👌 😊

This makes the cancellation of 1899 even sadder - it had as much potential as Dark's season 1, now with higher budget and Baran Bo Odar and Jantje Friesen being a more established duo. Yet it gets cancelled despite being in the top 10 for a month, and shows like Emily In Paris get renewed 🙄
Emily in Paris is a silly romcom so I think it's easier for fans. Shows like this and Dark requires alot of thinking.
#SAVE1899
I'm seriously ready to protest Netflix over that cancelation.
Think I've got a solution. Emily wins tickets to a cruise and is suddenly a passenger on the 1899 boat. The next season of Emily does x can also be 1899 season 2. Of course, Emily is a background character with no lines. She plays a mute.

That family friend was YOU, from the future!!
r u sure its a family friend?
The thing I love about Dark is that it looks like a plot-driven show on its surface, but it functions extremely well as a character study. Every character is so perfectly constructed, and every performance is impeccable. Some of the best TV acting there is. From Jonas' tragic flaw of going ever darker to fix things, to Hannah's deep seated insecurity, to Claudia's single-minded pursuit of answers, you see that the cyclical timeline is borne by their predictable humanness as much as it is by the time machines.
Tannhaus's pursuit of fixing what he neglected, his relationship with his son, without considering consequences
Dude, character study? XDD Have we watched the same show? Characters have no depth.
To this day, Dark still haunts me.....I've never seen anything quite like it....nor will I ever again.....

The only bad thing about Dark for me was that if made me feel so dumb. Everything made sense but I couldn't exactly understand it either. Such a good show, too good even.
I wouldn't worry. It's nowhere near as smart as it pretends to be.
@EpicwinFTW27 Not at all :) But the messages they delivered have been explored elsewhere in much less time and with equal depth)
I wouldn't worry. How well you can understand or comprehend a show isn't completely indicative of intelligence anyway. The show is amazing though, and incredibly complex. Definitely one of my favorite shows ever. It might be my favorite actually.
Dark is probably the only show where i felt happy and relieved that everyone dies at the end
...i'm 75 and never in my life was i ever so invested in a tv drama. Dark was truly perfect...
Lmao
Dark series also shown reincarnation as a quantum Immortality concept, Katherina died in first world and reborns in second World, she then died in second World during apocalypse but her soul remembers her suffering during the lost of Mikkel that's why she was hugging Mikkel during apocalypse, Peter died in first world and reborns in second World, that's why he was feeling like he have met Jonas, when Jonas first time came to his world, because he have given him therapy, Martha have also born in second World that's why she was saying that when I met you Jonas I felt I met you before, Magnus Does all time travel thing with Jonas and reborns in second World and that's why he was satisfied during Apocalypse of second World because he have done so much work so his soul was satisfied. But they all reborn in third world through different parents and reunited. The paradise.
yes it may possible that quantum immortality concept of quantum physics can exist in real we just don't know that we are immortal and we will be become our Ulternate version of Scrodinger cat experiment, as Jonas felt something when he first read the letter of Martha, because he knows then only that The lines he said to real Martha can't be known by the Martha of other world. So it may be all version of all characters were past and future life of each other. And that is why he became Adam from Jonas.
There is also a hint given in episode 5 of season 2 that in staring scene Middle Jonas dreamed where he is with Teenage Martha on bed and then suddenly Martha belly Ejects black liquid and that was their son, the origin, he was shocked because Adult jonas never goes to Martha for intercourse on bed , but because in true sense he goes to Martha world and died and reincarnated in alternate version.

They were the first to do it

Fringe too. Good show but not as good as Dark and i love Fringe alot.
It nicely explained everything in the end but before it was so confusing even with timelines and charts you can't understand it.
Life is Strange 1 was excellent too, not nearly as deep tho
As a Dutch viewer with a lot of friends all over Europe, I can tell you that most people whose native language is not English, love subtitles on English shows. Even if our English is actually pretty good, we still tend to want subtitles.
Probably because we're used to it from when we learned English by watching American movies as kids :P
That and because we are so used to it we can easily scan the entire subtitle and then follow what is happening and being said on-screen.
Well Im German and I can tell you most German hate reading subtitels because in Germany Movies and TV Shows are usually dubed
Now Dark is my go to argument that German productions can actually be amazing.
where do you find energy to sit through month of black screens on your monitor? ffs I'm not gonna do that even if I miss a great story.

I just want to echo the recommendation for The Leftovers. No spoilers, but be aware that like “Dark,” the feel of the show evolves a bit over time.

Yeah and the English version is terrible! You lose all those great voices and intense delivery.
Dark is a show that i would love to experience again and again for the first time
Scene the show 3 times and honesty thought that the older Ulrich was the main actor wearing prosthetics. Amazing job on casting.
I finished Dark a month ago and I still cant stop thinking about it. It's perfect. My favourite piece of media ever.

Yeah, I'm guilty of this also, when a show or movie is European I tend to be more skeptical
I appreciate this synopsis. I will add 'Dark' to my watchlist. I never watched beyond episode 1 season 1.
I am German yet I cant get my friends to watch dark 💀💀
I just finished this show last nigh. My wife and i went in "blind" without knowing much about it. I think its one of my all time favorite shows. Toppped GOT due to the ending. On Par with BB and BCS on IMO.
1899 was canceled before I even got to watch it 😢
I think the reason people hated the Lost finale was the pacing.
Dark is my #1 - I will never stop thinking about this show 😂
Never believe anything else!
Dark is the most perfect show ever made. Its definitely in my top 3 all time
Watched shows like Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, Peaky Blinders and yeah Dark is my favorite show of all time
Buddists believe we are all traped in this cylcle.
Also ir was a bad misleading of "no thr iland is not an afterlife" well, they still did it thats still going against your promise..
Having growing up reading subtitles it blows my mind that people are bothered by it. Btw, Dark is terrific. Time for a rewatch soon
@@NostalgicMem0riesthat is definitely not the best way to watch it, the original language will always be the best in live action cinema
I was slightly hoping for the end to be Jona and Martha's appearance in the real world time line being the reason Tannhaus' family wrecked. At the very least its an alternate ending that will live rent free in my head.
Darks score is also fantastic.
I am still flabbergusted by the whole thing.
rip 1899 😢
I've been begging folks to watch this show for years. SMH
If you like timetravel i recomend 12 monkeys, a really underrated show and every episode feels like a season finale
The movie is good as well.
Just started it.
I literally didn't know there was a series until you said "episode".
That’s exactly what I came here to recommend. I watched this and immediately thought, “I wonder if he’s ever watched 12 Monkeys?”
For anyone who loves Dark you should consider the SyFy show 12 Monkeys to be a must see. It’s another beautiful, brilliant masterpiece of a show that doesn’t get as much recognition as it deserves.
@@RebelDavis indeed, scrolled way to far down to find a 12monkeys recomendation, and its started 2 years before dark was on netflix! what a difference a Streaming site VS television channel does to craft a fan base
watched dark during lockdown with my dad in 2021. he’s not a tv guy. he absolutely loves dark
I really liked 1899, I hope other actors from Dark pop up IF there's a second season.
This show is absolutely incredible and in my top 5 favorite shows of all time. When it ended, I remember getting a sheet of paper and trying to write down the whole family tree and all the connections lol. I spent hours just thinking about everything. I think it's time to watch this again. Great video.
You have a little mistake here. Jonas best friend is Bartosz, which isn't Michaels brother. Michael is Magnus and Marthas brother:)
He meant Martha. She is also a very good friend of his. Probably a best friend
Dark was one of those shows that made you lay awake at night pondering its existential questions. And when you woke up in the morning, you thought about it some more.
I'll be watching 1899 one episode per week. I have a feeling that the thread count will be high enough that each episode will require substantial rewatching to get the full effect.
That was my plan. Pace my viewing but I failed. I finished it in 2 days. Hard not to click next episode.
I am used to subtitles so I can be called blessed. To watch something in original language is the right way. I agree that the cast if Dark is outstanding. To me one of the best shows I have seen and while watching it is best.
I'm happy that after producing nothing but trash for several decades, Germany cinema/TV has finally managed to produce an international hit
Yes you're absolutely correct this show is one of a kind. For me the best part was listening to the German and reading the subtitles. I get upset when people say I don't like it because I have to read subtitles but what can we expect from poorly educated Americans
completely agree
My favourite show ever made.
It's like they combined my two favorite series: true detective (the best intellectual series but only the first season)
And Fringe (time travel).
Surprisingly amazing. It's top 5 shows ever and my 3 fav
@@SyrinxArcadianNymphterrible take pal the original is so much better than any dubbed version
wasnt confusing at all for me it added to the experience imo
Dark is my second all time favorite show.Twin Peaks is the best.I also recommend Dark to everyone I meet.great video
Way better than stranger things.
This is by far the greatest show ever produced. A true masterpiece!! I originally watched it in German while reading the English subtitles. I also watched it dubbed over in English. I think many English viewers would greatly benefit from watching Dark in its original language (German) and then a second watch in English.
As a German speaker, this show is still really hard to watch and understand. I literally have to take notes while watching it XD
@@pamelalansbury94 We have Twix too in germany they changed the name from "Raider" to "Twix" in 1991.
@@AdrianColley that's amazing
If anyone really enjoyed Dark, I would recommend watching 1899 its by the same directors and its another amazing series on theoretical physics.
I watched this show completely randomly one day and it affected my spiritual mindset and worldview in general, is that not bonkers? I love art.
This is my favourite show too. People who don’t want to read subtitles really missed out on an incredible journey.
this is a MUST WATCH IN GERMAN with english subtitles. i've tried it with the english dub and it is diminished greatly as it absolutely loses the nuanced acting of the original actors. watching with the actors' own voices is incredible.
completely agree
