I actually like that valve includes another charger. With two you can have a dedicated travel charger and one that stays plugged into the dock so you can run the cable behind your display setup permanently
It’s also an economy of scale thing. Although yes is drives the cost of the dock up, it drives the cost of a deck with a charger down some and makes having an extra charger cheaper. I think it’s a good thing. I don’t love winding cables every couple hours and since the deck sucks power you’re gonna have to wag the charger everywhere. Better to have two.
Exactly my thoughts as soon as I saw this. The guys (and gals) at Valve know what they're doing, on top of that I trust them more than the fly by night companies. They seem more considerate of what the majority of consumers want and I'm sure they do A LOT of group thinking before anything goes into production. Love those gals (and guys)
I'm really surprised you didn't recognize the convenience of having a second charger you could just leave plugged in with the dock. I do appreciate mentioning which docks would possibly work better with cases. Still what I'd really like a reviewer to cover are the various models that include an SSD port. Being about to add TBs of storage when docked would be awesome. For that matter it could even be a good way to put to use the original SSD. (Though honestly a 2tb 2230 in the deck and a 4tb 2280 in the dock sounds ideal.)
I can see the benefit to having an internal m.2 SSD in the dock, but I'd personally have little use most of the time as I primarily play handheld. Also, a 2TB 2230 is very much ideal. 👍
Got to agree. It’s more common to have the problem of missing needed cables than having a spare. Admittedly I just ordered the dock at the current lower price of £69 which felt an OK premium for an officially supported dock.
Personally I don't care if a dock feels cheap. It's going to sit on a desk or entertainment center and not move, so it's not something I'm messing with daily outside of putting my Deck on and off it. It's like the Switch dock which is just a cheap light feeling hunk of black plastic. It's nothing special at all but it does its job and that's all that matters.
The gripe with the extra charger is that it adds extra cost for those who dont need it. We could easily buy an extra one if we wanted, but some of us dont need that extra charger so its just wasted money
This weekend is going to be the first time that I actually used the charger that came with the dock. Edit: Also, yes to the option of having it included or not.
Talked me into Valves lol. With added support and all the display options would work really well for me. Plus the extra power cable works because I like having an extra one when I'm going place to place and just leave the dock out plugged up unless I'm taking that for whatever reason. Thanks for the video.
I like to have a case on my deck since i don’t want scratches etc. And the official dock is just not designed for cases, and honestly i don’t understand that decision at all. I’m going to have to go with the ivoler dock because of this, although i would rather have the official one if it would fit cases…
I constantly have an issue where when I try to use a mouse with a dock it makes the screen go gray until I stop touching the mouse. Any idea what could cause this? Only happens when the mouse and deck are plugged into a dock.
One thing you should have mentioned agyer i just bought my ivoler is that if youre thinking youre going to be able to play long hiurs docked ur wrong… once u connect a power cord into the dock so it can charge it slow charges and drains ur battery. So once ur low on battery which im sire it will be quick u will have to take it off dock and charge it seperatley i also got.. the newest version on amazon and the wire seems to be deffective it connects and disconnects off my monitor
Having an extra charger for a dock is basically a must have. The whole point of a dock is to quickly and easily connect with a single plug. If you have to go find your charger, plug it in to the dock and then route it to an outlet, it kinda defeats the purpose of a quick connection. Im curious as to how you use your dock and steam deck? Are you an always docked kind of guy?
Hey there. I'm primarily a handheld gamer, but I dock the Steam Deck from time to time. My whole point is that there should be an option to have a charger come with it or not. Let's say I'm primarily a docked gamer, I wouldn't really see the need for an extra charger if my Steam Deck already came with one.
@@baldlyrudy In a case where you would almost NEVER unplug your single charger from the dock it makes total sense, other than that single use case I'm at a loss...

Thanks for the guide. Looking for a replacement dock since my jsaux dock keeps causing my display to flicker 7 months later. Just bought a brand new AOC C24G1A to replace an old HP monitor I found for free on the side of the toad and had the same problem. EDIT: It wasn't a Jsaux dock. It was a Warrky dock. Pretty much a cheap clone dock. Might pick up a Jsaux or oem dock.
I just got the official dock and everyone I see is having issues like me where it works the first time but after it just keeps flickering and tv is not picking up the connection ( I have a Samsung Q70AA 65’ ) people say to just use a different dock not the steam one.
Personally I'm enjoying the ivoler dock. For me it hits the sweet spot on functionality and price. Bought my SD just as a retro handheld (old guy here, who had to give up gaming to raise my kids) to play the consoles that passed me by. With this thing I can plug in the monitor in my office, or TV! What else could you ask for? $90 for the "official" doc...no thanks.
Honestly forgot that these don't come with a charger and since I have my Steam Deck sitting upstairs in my room with the charger cable plugged in close by, I'd have to purchase another charger to plug it into the dock which would be hooked up to my basement TV. That was a deal breaker for me and I cancelled my pending dock order.
too bad the official dock doesn't work with Samsung TV's. also tons of other but that's the main one people are having issues with. huge issue especially if you're traveling and have no idea what tv is at the hotel and all the settings are locked down and stuff, it should just put an image through the damn HDMI. that's its main purpose and it can't even do that
I enjoy using my AyaNeo because of the dock that came with it. I'd love to buy the official Dock for the Deck but 100 euros is 100 euros and the other ones are silver and have the NIC on the side which is... urgh... :/ That iVoler Dock might be the best middle ground but I dunno. Maybe the official one for the TV set and a third party one for the desk?
At least the Ayaneo one seems fully functional. The "dock" that I got with my ROG Ally is a joke. And I agree, the iVoler is a nice middle ground, especially for the price. Like you said, €100 is €100.
Nah. Not at all. I have a AOC Monitor that's 1080/144Hz, but I color calibrated it with a Spyder Express. It does the job well. A 1440 monitor will cost a little more of course. Also, Dell monitors are pretty solid, IMO. Do you have anything to calibrate it or are you looking for something that works out of the box?
great video, I’ve been on the fence about which dock to get. The official one from valve would have been a lock if it supported cases on the steam deck (big design flaw btw), but I still might get it anyway since I have a 1440p monitor. Or, I might get just get a docking station that sits next to the deck, because I’m not too impressed by ivoler or jsaux tbh. Appreciate you!
Thanks! Yeah. I 100% get that. Even after trying out the Jsaux and the iVoler, I'd still rather go with the official dock from Valve with my situation. If you have a DBrand KillSwitch case, then they have a cradle that you can add to the Valve dock. I haven't tried it though.
does anyone actually bother to review these multiple steam deck docks with the steam deck being in a case. Tons of people install cases on their steam decks to protect it.
If you don't care for the AC Adapter, then it's totally not worth it. Official support from Valve and both Display Port and HDMI support give it an edge, IMO. The only downside is the price.
That's weird. I will say that I normally have to get out of the game before connecting a new controller or go to controller settings before a controller works on a game that's already running, but I've never had to restart it.
