    One thing I think that was overlooked in the Dark Confidant vs Des Lacooda discussion, is that in Yugioh you can choose your attack targets (vs Magic, where the opponent selects blocks). So in Yugioh I can summon a random dork with over 600 attack to take out Lacooda, but in Magic I would need a removal spell for Confidant. And since Yugioh primarily focuses around monsters in basically every deck, it's super easy to have something big enough for that.

    • @RevolverOcelot358
      @RevolverOcelot358 Месяц назад +67

      This. Dark Confidant would be broken in Yugioh if it worked the same way it does in Magic. It would need the additional text of "Your opponent cannot target this card for attacks but it does not prevent your opponent from attacking directly." Otherwise Dark Confidant would also be bad.

    • @SackofDooDoo

      What ties into that is the fact that for Des Lacooda to function, you have to sacrifice a lot of deck slots to keep it alive, which just isn't worth it. Dark Confidant in MTG can just be slammed into a generically good deck and it will passively generate value.

    Something that I think CGB misses and that maybe Alex hasn't drilled in yet, is that while yes, almost all of our creatures and powerful spells and traps are free, it means that so is almost all of the removal. And when evaluating especially older formats like goat, you gotta remember that every deck for the most part is jamming a good mix of monster and spell trap removal, its just pretty easy to get decent spot removal or even board wipes in yugioh, so slower strategies or anything that requires resource consolidation needs to contend with the fact that your opponent is usually in a good position to take out a considerable part of your board at any time

  • @goiserrrhd6844
    @goiserrrhd6844 Месяц назад +67

    So, CGB, for context on why Dark Confidant is great, but Des Lacooda isn't. One big key difference is that you can just simply choose to not block with Dark Confidant, therefore it lives through Battle and forces your opponent to have some kind of removal spell, otherwise it'll make it to the next turn and you'll get the value. Same theory behind Esper Sentinel being amazing, yet only a 1/1 that makes your opp only pay 1 extra mana, one time each turn. That same card in Yugioh, wouldn't survive the turn and would be dreadful. Because, with Yugioh, everything has Taunt. And Yugioh is usually over by turn 2 or 3. So, typically your opponent can easily remove bodies, or at the very least, put a few thousand ATK worth of Damage on the board. And as they are forced to attack through your monsters first, something like Des Lacooda, would never survive the battle phase of your opponents' first turn. :)

    Not only does he get right that this card is just really good either way and gets better and better as deck's gameplans become stronger and stronger (which it did, in Upstart's 3-of in every deck era) but that suddenly it becomes worse and worse if the individual card quality becomes so high that drawing a single card is not worth running it (which ALSO HAPPENED, this card is functionally unplayable nowadays due to every card doing far more for you)

Card Destruction ends up in the graveyard somehow and you add it back with something like Curious and just win the game by deckout if they have like 18 cards or something in hand.

    I looked up replacement effects in Magic for something unrelated and noticed that CGB is actually wrong about Reckless Greed. It would work exactly the same in MtG as it does in Yu-Gi-Oh.
    614.10 states that effects that skip phases are classified as replacements in the form "if X would happen, do nothing instead" and 614.7 specifies that if a replacement tries to replace an event that never happens, it just doesn't do anything.
    So by those rules, if you play two Reckless Greeds in the same turn, both of them will attempt to skip the same two draw steps - one of them will skip the step, but the other will do nothing since the draw step it's trying to skip no longer exists.

    The difference between dark confidant and des lacooda is that monsters can always attack monsters. For dark confidant you need to invest a removal card (which you dont always have) or it will give you value meanwhile Des Lacooda gets killed by everything (600 as a stat line is about as low as you can go, monsters with it will NEVER win combat) so you dont really need to invest anything except an attack from a monster (which they needed to do anyways since you cant attack directly)

    The biggest bait that's been happening in a lot of the episodes already: special summoning isn't special, but most of the time you actually do need your normal summon in order to get your chain of special summoning going. If a monster requires your normal summon and they do nothing, they're 99% shit, unless the archetype is built to normal summon that monster.
    Also Reckless Greed works like this because lingering effects are independent of one another. Both Reckless Greeds independently check the next 2 draw phases. There's nothing on the card or the rules that say one phase check can only apply to one card somehow.

    Something I don't see talked about Upstart is that in older YGO past the first turns decks were quite a lot clunckier in threatening lethal, so increasing your opponent's LPs might result in giving them an extra turn to draw into a powerful swingy spell/trap card.

    the thing about upstart goblin is that it is a sorcery speed card, it plays into droll, it is incompatible with certain other card draw, and finally it sometimes conflicts with optimal ratios. in yugioh playing the minimum deck size is not always good because you have engine requirements that you don't want to draw. bricks basically and the smaller your deck the more likely you are to draw the card. in magic you play a card cuz you want to see it usually by drawing it. in yugioh you play many cards you never ever want to see and drawing it literally fucks you so hard and some decks will just go up to the 50 cards instead of 40 by padding out the deck with more non engine or non garnet engine cards.
    the best magic analogy is cmc 0 card that you can't normally cast from hand and you want to cascade into. the rest of your deck is cascade cards, lands, and force of will and leyline of the void. you wont play a 10 card deck even if you have the option and since you're heavily relying on turn 0 leyline of the void and force of will when you go second, you might not even want to play a strictly worse gitaxian probe that doesnt give you the hand knowledge.

    funny thing about shuffle into the deck: when the effect says shuffle into the deck, then shuffling a card into the extra deck counts as being successful for checking "then" or "and if you do" as if it was properly shuffled into the deck. however if the cost is to shuffle in the deck then it doesn't work because konami said so. so if a card says shuffle into the deck for cost, then you can't shuffle back extra deck cards to pay that cost.

      @@YukiFubuki. but parts of effects conditional on doing other parts of effects do not have to be done exactly as stated yes? it just needs the previous part before a then conjunction to be "done". im kinda familiar with infernobles so i know the issue here. yugioh is a mess.

    • @YukiFubuki.
      @YukiFubuki. Месяц назад

      @@zengamer321 it depends on the conjunctive used, if an effect comes in 2 parts then for 'then' and 'and if you do' they both requires the first part of the effect to be legal to proceed to the second part but if the second part isnt legal you still must do the first part and the only difference between these 2 is that 'then' indicates the 2 parts of the effect happens in an order as written while 'and if you do' means its simultaneously occurring at the same time instead of one after another
      however these conjunctives is for effects not cost so what card were you even thinking of in the first place

    CGB is right that Reckless Greed wouldn't work the same way in MTG. Consider Stonehorn Dignitary - each time it ETBs, the opponent loses an additional combat phase. This is at the center of an old win condition for Azorius Familiars in Pauper and is still played occasionally in Flicker Tron.

    • @SaberToothPortilla
      @SaberToothPortilla Месяц назад +5

      Yeah, I agree with CGB that "skip" would seem to imply you can't lose the same phase twice.
      If it said, "during your next two draw phases, you do not draw", that'd be much more clear.

  • @GeneralNickles
    @GeneralNickles Месяц назад +12

    To clarify the whole "next 2 draw phases" thing:
    Yu-Gi-Oh doesn't see into the future.
    The cards don't know that your next draw phase is already going to be skipped, so the second and third reckless greeds can still be activated. Game state doesn't check if the phase is skipped until the time to enter said phase arrives. That's why you have to declare that you're skipping your battle phase when using Runick spells.

    • @GeneralNickles
      @GeneralNickles Месяц назад +3

      @Bob12649 that's a misnomer.
      Those prevent you from summoning certain monsters because the materials being sent are considered to still be on the field when the new monster is attempting to be summoned. It's not "seeing the future", it's really more "these two things happen at the same time".
