    Always love to see collabs with CGB. HIs charisma as a creator really comes across well in these, so much so that I've found myself watching Magic the Gathering videos from him despite having never played the game before, and likely would have no interest outside of casually playing MTG Arena at some point. There is no way an MTG player would know the difference between negating activation of an effect or negating a monster/effect (for instance, Witch's Strike cannot respond to Imperm lol), too. I mean, even a lot of YGO players don't really understand the difference, but negating activation is possible in Damage Step and such, which is an interaction that actually comes up. So Witch's Strike basically counters a very limited selection of decks and will be completely dead in many matchups. Not to mention summon negation as an effect is pretty rare now, and the one that could be played like Cosmic Blazar actually dodges Witch's Strike and comes back next turn, which may as well not even have done enough.
      It's a really damn good bait selection for somebody who haven't played YGO but understand card games

    "what is he talking about??" was a fun moment, but it did explain to me what I didn't understand before. Apparently in yugioh, trap cards area already too slow (so you run handtraps instead, which need not be set). This thing is a trap card that is meant to counter trap cards negating your cards you play on the next next turn. And then it can get negated.

    • @hannessteffenhagen61
      @hannessteffenhagen61 2 месяца назад +3

      I mean there are trap cards that are getting played, but only if you get them for free as part of some combo or they literally win the game if you resolve them. Usually it's not enough for a trap card to have a merely good effect for it to be playable on its own.

    • @sendouvincent8232
      @sendouvincent8232 2 месяца назад +5

      Is easier to explain. In the end of your turn, you could already have in turn 1 more than one netation, your opponent will be more likely trying to boardbreak your opponent. Yes, you can be halted with some psy-framegear gamma or Ash blossom depending what plays your opponent activates, but you may already have 2, 3 cards that would deal with that. But then again is too situational. It't even worse going second just because your opponent should have already be on the oppressive side, you will be too late.

      Modern YGO is far more prone to consistency within a theme, even if some themes are romanized Japanese and some are localized English(which is another thing, Witch's Strike is a counterpart to Solemn Strike, and the rest of the Solemn series, which feature OLD MAN SAYS NO, the guy being struck by the witch)
      B: a a fair amount of old localization was likely in fear of MtG, "Lightning Bolt" is a thing thats big and well known in MtG and you just made a Magic Card named Lightning Bolt, same with things like Sogen instead of Plains, etc etc

    @39:30 I agree, the flavor complaint is huge.
    That's why Last Turn being two SPIRIT monsters is also a flavor fail because they can't be special summoned by Last Turn! It is functionally impossible to create the battle depicted on Last Turn with Last Turn!

    • @GeneralNickles
      @GeneralNickles 2 месяца назад +9

      The battle depicted on Last Turn actually makes perfect sense.
      It doesn't make much sense that it's on Last Turn, but the battle itself is actually kinda brilliant.
      Hino Kagu Tsuchi causes your opponent to discard there entire hand.
      Yamata Dragon causes you to draw 5 cards.
      Both effects trigger upon inflicting battle damage.
      They're literally fighting over control of a player's hand. They're fighting to make it either 5 or 0.
      Why that fight is on Last Turn, I don't know. Maybe because the game is functionally over if Hino Kagu Tsuchi wins? And if Yamata dragon wins, then it should be impossible for you to lose?

      @@GeneralNickles Oh absolutely the art is sick and depicts the 2 big hitters of the set.
      I just feel like it's a crack in the development process, like maybe Spirits didn't have the No Special Summon clause early in the set design. Then they got that put on and accidentally ruined a cool card's flavor.
      And to be fair at the time if you connected battle damage from Yamama, I think it'd discard the opponent's hand, which would be a very brutal revival target in early Yugioh.

    • @mp1335
      @mp1335 2 месяца назад +4

      It's worth noting that the monsters illustrated are a Bracchio-raidus, which is somewhat in flavor, because it's a fusion dinosaur and you can't play the polymerization to have it. And the other one is Frostosaurus, the high attack vanilla monsters with the flavor text:
      "This monster's metabolism enables it to endure long periods of cold, harnessing the power to become a creature of solid ice! Nothing else can withstand such temperatures, especially victims of its glacial rampage." So I think it's more or less on point? Could show him "heat wave". Or "cold feet". Brother cards.

    One important note about Rivalry of Warlords is that Spell and Trap removal is often done through the extra deck (though I think CGB doesn't know about that yet). This combined with the weird rulings (if you control two Warriors you can't Link Summon into a single FIend, for example) leads to it being extremely hard to remove unless you draw a Twin Twisters or something similar.

    • @NovusIgnis
      @NovusIgnis 2 месяца назад +8

      Sounds like bad deck convolution. There was a time when our decks were actually balanced and we played monsters spells and traps in them so we could deal with multiple situations. That was back when the game was more about strategy instead of trying to make it so your opponent isn't allowed to play while claiming it's unfair that your opponent is stopping you from playing.

They're the ones paying more for stuff that gets designed for their way of playing, then they complain about stuff and buy the next thing that keeps reinforcing the idea that this is how they want the game to be. Evenly Matched is a bad card, unless they use it. Baron is busted, unless *they* use it. Ash Blossom needs to be banned, unless it's in *their* deck. Pot of Greed can't be allowed, unless it's for *them* specifically.
      This kind of hypocrisy is all over card games, make no mistake, but it's most prevalent in Yugioh of all games. Everyone says they want an interactive game until it comes to them stopping their opponents from playing.

    • @cyberdrace
      @cyberdrace 2 месяца назад +3

      @@NovusIgnis there's a similar dynamic in PvP video games and balancing patches. I think a good meta is created by players playing and exploring a game with sufficient depth, not by designers reacting to "community feedback". Aren't emergent behaviors and mechanics literally the main selling point of a deck building card game? What people fail to appreciate is that if designers actually fully understood their own game, it would mean, by definition, that the game is already solved. Now, just because a meta is "solved" doesn't mean that each individual match is boring or predictable, but it does kinda ruin the deckbuilding aspect in a broad sense. Witches strike has 2 main problems cimo didn’t mention:
    1: It does not stop your opponent negating your card, meaning you have to intentionally lose a card to activate this.
    2: It only responds to your opponent negating the ACTIVATION, but many negates negate the effect (Ash Blossom for example).

    • @YukiFubuki.
      @YukiFubuki. 2 месяца назад +7

      it alos has to destroy both opponent’s field and hand so it requires at least 1 card in either location meaning if either of them is empty like say the hand because opponent spent it all for a full field or is on a trap deck like labrynth for example and they set everything then witch’s strike cannot legally be activated for the time thing

    • @lucasferrini7063
      @lucasferrini7063 2 месяца назад +5

      @@Depressed_Spider Nope. It doesn't. As the card states, it only happens on activation. If you have an effect that states "Target 1 face up card ; negate it's effects and, if you do, destroy it" the activation still goes through. However, when attempting to resolve the effect is negated. However, if you negate the activation, is like the card never managed to hit the field in the first place.
      While both end up with the same end result (the negated card effect didn't happened), only in the second example you would get to resolve Witch Strike

      The worst part about witches strike is that it's a normal trap:
      1) It's a trap card, which makes inherently slow. If it was a quick play spell it would be infinitely more playable and potentially broken.
      2) It's not a counter trap, meaning it can be responded to with another negate

Magic you can both mulligan AND expect to see beyond turn 3, so you'll more than likely find SOMETHING, but in Yu Gi Oh? If it ain't there first thing, it might as well not be there

      No it's not. Not even close.
      The flavor is that a cold Wave is a dangerous weather event.
      spells and traps caring about the weather is a pretty common theme in Yu-Gi-Oh.
      Most of the really good spell/trap removal cards are weather events/storms.
      TYPHOON
      Mystical space TYPHOON
      STORM
      Double CYCLONE
      galaxy CYCLONE
      cosmic CYCLONE
      Twin TWISTERS
      And even some cards that don't have the names of storms in there names still show storms in the artwork. A prime example of that being "Malevolent Catastrophe". Or even a sort of metaphorical "storm" of psychic damage shown in "Unending Nightmare".
      Cold Wave specifically doesn't destroy spells/traps. It just prevents them from being activated. Sort of "putting them on ice" with a cold weather event.

    I think the reason "drawing the out" is more toxic in Yugioh than Magic is the speed of the average game. In case of floodgate effects especially, you're more than likely only get 1 more turn at best if you can't play the majority of your cards so the chances of getting to silver bullet-type cards are less likely than in a slower-paced game such as Magic. This also sparks the argument that putting stuff in the limited list makes for a worse feeling if you're playing against it that your opponent draws the only copy in their deck. It's salty and admittedly, very juicy when you win in those scenarios but that's more than likely because you also drew your one out lol

    39:16 @Cimoooooooo if he has a flavor complaint there, you could show him this card's counterpart - "heat wave" which DOES work against monsters. Or this card's brother "cold feet". It's also worth noting that the monsters illustrated are a Bracchio-raidus, which is somewhat in flavor, because it's a fusion dynosaur and you can't play the polymerization to have it. And the other one is Frostosaurus, the high attack vanilla monsters with the flavor text:
    "This monster's metabolism enables it to endure long periods of cold, harnessing the power to become a creature of solid ice! Nothing else can withstand such temperatures, especially victims of its glacial rampage."

    I'm surprised CGB missed the nuance in Lava Golem's text. I wonder if it had been spelled out more clearly what tributing means, he would have spotted it. As long as it's possible to attempt to summon lava golem at all, there is no way to respond to it, because tributing is part of the cost. It works the same way in MTG. If you counter my Disappearing Act, I still bounce a creature I control. It's weird for a "cost" to be so blatantly a benefit, but it's not that much weirder than having an untap symbol in an ability cost.
    On the other hand, "tributing a monster" in Yugioh is just "sacrificing a creature" in Magic. It's as if Diabolic Edict could somehow choose creatures without actually targeting them, like if you Mindslavered your opponent and then cast Edict. You can choose to sacrifice their indestructible hexproof creature with protection from everything and regenerate: {0}.
    So putting those two together, you have a wording in MTG something like:
    *Split second*
    As an additional cost to casting this spell, choose two different creature card names among names of creatures opponents control.
    Each opponent sacrifices a creature with each name then summons an 8/6 red Fiend token named Lava Golem. It has "At the beginning of your upkeep, lose 3 life."
    (Technically it's a cost, but split second is basically as good, and there isn't really a way to phrase this effect as a cost in MTG.)

    • @kokoro-no-me
      @kokoro-no-me 2 месяца назад +2

      I agree, the word tributing flew over my head on first look at the card too, and I think that might be why CGB didn’t catch on to it

    • @maxastro
      @maxastro Месяц назад

      Actually I think the wording needs to be "As an additional cost to cast this spell, choose two creatures controlled by target player and that player sacrifices those creatures."
      This will cause the creatures to die before the spell is resolved; your version won't kill the creatures until the spell resolves, which will be negated by counterspells.

    • @EebstertheGreat
      @EebstertheGreat Месяц назад

       @maxastro That targets a player. So it won't work on players with hexproof or protection or whatever. Moreover, choosing two things a player controls intuitively ought to target them, so it doesn't get around that problem. Choosing names among the names of creatures they control gets around that.

    • @maxastro
      @maxastro Месяц назад

      @@EebstertheGreat Choosing does not target; MtG explicitly uses "choose" in places where targeting is undesirable. You are right that it should choose the player too if you wanted it to be an exact match.

    • @EebstertheGreat
      @EebstertheGreat Месяц назад

      @@maxastro I just don't think a card would use a targeting mechanic without the word "target" only to avoid that word. Then again, it might. MTG cards are weird sometimes. Like, they will allow you to cast sorceries "as though they had flash" rather than just giving them flash, even though flash just means "can be cast as though it were an instant." So you can cast your sorceries as though they could be cast as though they were instants . . .

    Something that is a big rule difference between Yugioh and Magic is that in Yugioh you cannot fail to find or activate an unresolvable card. This matters because with cards like Rivalry of Warlords, if you control a Dragon, you cannot attempt to summon any other type of monster until your Dragon leaves the field or is flipped face down. I would contrast this to the Legend rule, where a state based action lets you pick which stays, in Yugioh you make that state-based choice when Rivalry is first activated and then realistically never again. There are even bad toxic combos to completely lock your opponent out of the game by gifting them a creature with a bad type or by modifying the type of the first creature they summon. The most common toxic thing with the card is when a creature is supposed to tutor another creature, like there is this concept of laddering by tutoring stronger and stronger creatures, and you can hold Rivalry until they reach a rung of the ladder which has a different type than the next highest rung of the ladder.
    I love Rivalry. All time great card.

      Crop Circles the pack filler Trap card can fail to find

    • @SquibbyJ
      @SquibbyJ Месяц назад

      @@BussiDestroyer Crop Circles actually is significantly different! Fail To Find in Yugioh! only happens when the target for an effect moves locations between cost and resolution, like if a runick spell banishes the only legal targets off the top of the deck or if a Bystial banishes it from grave. Like in Yugioh!, you are forced to find a legal target if you have one, and cannot activate a card without one.
      This is different in Magic, and fail-to-find is a different thing because of it. For example, say we played by Magic rules and you had one Malicious in grave and the other two in hand. In Magic, you could activate the Malicious in Grave to attempt to bait an Ash/Counterspell even though there is no way to resolve the effect. Same situation, you can opt not to resolve an effect in magic in situations where yugioh rules would make you.

    The real reason Witch's Strike doesn't see play is because it says "when the opponent negates the ACTIVATION of the card" not "when it negates the effect" and almost no cards in the game negates the activation but only the effect so this card is extremely niche.

    Cimo's account of witch's strike is only halfway there. Yes it's too slow because it's a trap, that's one thing. Another piece of the puzzle is that negating is something the first turn player does. The first turn player doesn't need this card because it's himself, not the going-second opponent, who negates stuff. And the second turn player doesn't need this card either because it's too slow.
