    Great to see the new Philodendron Hybrids 💕 Not surprising they are using Florida Beauty as one of the parents, their variegation is so stable and they are a very sturdy plants. 😀🇨🇦

    Kaylee it is F1 hybrids that show the most consistency. They are always half of each parent species (or breed, for dogs) and so are the most similar. If you and I crossed the same two parent species, your F1 and my F1 hybrids would be the most similar to one another when compared to subsequent hybrid crossings (F2 F3 etc) because they will have unequal proportions of DNA from each species parent.

      Yeah but the plant community is used to clones (propogations) and that much variety might throw some people off if they think the plant they can order will be exactly like photos of other ones.

    • @horace6851
      @horace6851 12 дней назад

      I think the point being made is that if you chose particular characteristics from each generation the further you go the stabler they are. Like breeding for round red leaves, if every time you chose the roundest and reddest after multiple generations you will get most offspring round and red

    Isn't Florida Beauty a hybrid though (pedatum x squamiferum) so lots of these are hybrid vs hybrid already. And why siblings from the same combo may look very different. It's like if a dalmatian x australian shepherd stud were used to breed all sorts of different females, you'd get loads of different looks but never nothing that looked like one of the foundation breeds (at least not in the early F generations, backcrossing in dogs takes just 3-4 generations and you're back to visibly where you started lol).

    Plant science really speaks to the inner geek you didn't know you had until you start watching videos like these. I could easily go down the rabbit hole if only for the fact I've been trying to tell myself to stop buying more plants and just enjoy the ones I have getting bigger. Also the fact that I have my eye on a couple of plants as it is as and when they become available again, hint hint.

    So I actually have two billietiae x Florida beautys (non-variegated), and let me tell you, the leaf shapes of these hybrids vary greatly from plant to plant! Both of mine have more of the Florida shape, just very subtle, to the point where one almost looks like a golden dragon shape. My other one is slightly less golden dragon looking and has amazing bunny ear lobes! I’ve found that the ones that look more like a plain Billie shape are actually less common (at least in the non-variegated form) than the ones that express more of the Florida morphology.
    Also, these plants are beasts! They size up so quickly and grow so robustly, I honestly do recommend giving one a try sometime.

    FYI living organisms are called crosses (X), not by. eg tenue cross billietiae. Also, the nomenclature puts the pollinator first then the receiving . I don’t know about aroids, but w/ exhibition chickens, females, tend to dictate form & size while males influence more of the color pattern.

    20:15 this plant is stunning!! In the case of ghost leaves that start white and end green, would you have as many problems with browning as you would a monstera also? Or do you find there is less browning with that type of Polaroid-ish variegation?

    @HolidayGlow 17 дней назад

    Wait... do people not like P. squamiferum? I adore that plant even if it is super common! So goes without saying I quite like the mayoi/squamiferum hybrid. But my personal pick would be the radiatum x ghost. I like the idea of the spiritus sancti hybrid but really would want to see ones with more spiritus look in terms of shape/length. That one if you'd not said I wouldn't have necessarily guessed as a spiritus hybrid iykwim.

    • @Glizziemcguired
      @Glizziemcguired 17 дней назад

      They don’t always revert? We’ve got a few of them here that have matured and held on to large chunks of sectoral variegation. Did we just get lucky or is this a temporary thing lmao

      @rjoni123 17 дней назад +1

      @@Glizziemcguired I cant speak for everyone, but i have purchased 4 now that have all reverted over time. i hear about it pretty frequently in plant groups as well. I can only speak my worries based on my experience and it hasnt been good with this plant sadly and ill keel trying. Just chopped 2 of them even further back to try getting some color again :(

    So I’ve seen videos like this in the past with the same hybrids listed (for example, the florida beauty x Tortum, the billi x el choco)… so does that mean that there’s some company out there trying to grow it for production, but it’s not working out great?

    • @HolidayGlow
      @HolidayGlow 17 дней назад

      Probably there are a lot of smaller pro-mature/high end hobbyists very into the hybridizing side of things who are crossing things looking for the next big deal... think like the Anthurium Delta Force which is A. Clarinervium and Pedatoradiatum. Most plants resulting from seeds of that cross were boring but one was super unique. So then they aim to produce that specific one in larger quantities either by division or Tissue Culture to get more commercial numbers and give it a name like Delta Force. I hybridize iris, each cross is maybe 100-200 baby plants. Some crosses everything will end up being composted from... just nothing interesting. Some might have a keeper. Out of a few thousand every year I might end up naming and introducing for sale maybe 2-3.

    Honestly couldn't care less about any of the hybrids shown except for the ghosty ones.... the reason I find all of the rest plain and boring is that it just feels like they're crossing random motherplants to try and bring a new Delta Force unique hybrid to the market and atm we're just getting all the ugly duckling stock where the growers were also underwhelmed by them and just wanted to make a quick buck with new product and see if it maybe lands well on the market... when you hybridize plants, you do so with the intent to exaggerate/ bring out certain traits from the respective parents. In the case of philodendron I wouldn't have crossed a heart leaf with a long leaf philo. I would've done maybe el choco with gloriosum or luxurians to get a darker plant, maybe even a crawler, or a McDowell with a choco to get something less lanky maybe.... but not a billietiae with a choco or jose with choco 😅 this is aol just my opinion, but it's like with crossing an Anthurium Magnificum with a Veitchii... I find it just looks off.
    I think the point I'm tryikg to make is most of these hybrids just come off as aimless cross polination and having variegation on everything just makes it so you can see no variety of texture or colour of the individual hybrids shown... I know philodendron are harder to cross than Anthurium, but I'm just hoping this is for the most part just the stock the breeders felt wasn't worth keeping instead of a product they are proudly presenting us with 😂😂
    This is again, just my opinion and thank you for the awesome video! Even if I didn't like most of them, it's still fun to see what's on new in the market 😊
