It's so interesting to hear peoples' vastly different experiences with plants! I have a large philodendron tortum myself and I accidentally ripped off its ENTIRE root system when trying to repot it a couple months ago. I ended up just sticking the whole plant in a vase to reroot and it didn't even bat an eye. Gave me one large leave and two flowers back to back, no yellowing, no crisping, no nothing. On the other hand, I couldn't keep an anthurium clarinervium happy even if my life depended on it.
I feel what you're saying about African violets about then not being that exciting. I got one because my mum used to love growing them, but she always struggled to keep them alive. I bought her one for her birthday once and told her it came with a lifetime replacement warranty. It ended up dying and I never replaced it. My mum past away nearly 7 years ago. In the past 18 months I've readily got into house plants. I ended up getting an African violet. It's not mine though, it's my mums and I'm just looking after it for her. I... don't find then hard to grow? Put them in the right medium, and fertilize then regularly with an African Violet fertiliser, and bottom water like your said and they seem happy. My one plant has given me 3 more, with 4 more pups and leaf cuttings currently in my prop box
Hi Memo, really nice jumper - it suits you. Alocasia reginula Black Velvet: I recommend trying its hybrid Ninja instead - it´s blacker, velvet, embossed thicker leaves, has cooler veination, and generally it is stocky and seems to get bigger leaves. It´s one of my favourite plants because it´s so pretty (grows well in pon and a self-watering pot). Peperomia: I have been struggling for 3 years with Peperomia argyreia (watermelon), water propagated cuttings growing in pon. I spent excessive amount of hours trying to solve what it wants to thrive. It has been my most difficult & frustrating plant. It´s alive but doesn´t look great, although it has good light, fertiliser etc. Then I had an idea when a leaf broke off - I propagated it in water, planted it in Soil Ninja´s Ficus mix, put it on a northern windowsill and a miracle happened - it is growing in it like weeds - it looks amazing, grows fast, finally gets big leaves that don´t crack. I think the soil mix is what makes the difference - also maybe it needs mycorrhizal fungi in order to grow well. It did taught me a good lesson on importance of the right substrate - I swear that it makes all the difference. Anyhow, in spring, I´m going to chop my old peperomia to pieces and put them all in Soil Ninja´s Ficus mix - it works wonders :-)
Thank you! 😊 I love all your tips-Black Velvet Ninja sounds incredible, and your Peperomia rescue story is inspiring! Soil Ninja mix might be a game-changer for me too. 🌱💚
I find it so interesting to hear others opinion on what they like or what they do well/struggle with! Thank you for sharing. I purchased a mature Audrey Ficus tree in July. I put it directly in my South-Eastern window and it gets a lot of direct sun. It ended up growing like 7 new leaves and a new branch. I also have a ludisia discolor which I actually adore and it's growing well! I agree with you on the Amydrium Medium being a no go. It did grow fairly quickly for me, but the tips won't stop browning and I can't figure out why!!
It was a really fun video Memo! I find it so silly that you have to (and most plantubers) disclaim that this is your opinion and please people don't be offended if I bash a plant you like. It's just plants, people need to chill we all have different preferences and growing conditions why be offended if I say I don't like some plant? So weird.
Love this! “bores me to death” 😂😂 totally agree with all the plants you mentioned. I too like to grow plants out to their full potential and pass on those that require a terrarium. Just not fun at all.
Haha, when I saw the title I immediately thought brandtianum! Great video. Agree with most, just not amydrium medium (not tried the other varieties of amydrium) - agree it's slow, at least initially. Mine took about a year from 1 leaf snip to put out it's first leaf and then to realise it had a moss pole (that believe me I strapped it to tight to force it's node against the moss), but this year it's made 5 leaves, all progressively bigger. I changed nothing in its care, in fact it's a feral plant for me. I'd add spider plants to my list (just find them boring) and possibly paraiso verde - easy to grow but takes up far too much space and I've only managed to get 1 variegated leaf.
@Houseplantygoodness thank you. It's very possible I just got lucky. It absolutely needs to climb though & I think it's one of those who actually do need a moss pole.
I'm with you on Peperomias. They're just so small and kind of don't go anywhere. They're not going to climb or spread out into a big mat. They just always look like a cute little picture of a potplant. I think they're cool if you imagine them as minatures ... like, if you had a doll house, a Peperomia in it would look like a huge Alocasia, Anthurium or Philodendron ... quite cool in a terrarium too, but there are usually other plants in terraria that I get more excited about. African violets have pretty much the same neat shape too, so I can see why you're underwhelmed by both. I think their velvety leaves are kind of cute, but yeah, there are other plants I'd go for. With you on Ludisia too. Macodes is amazing ... you need it in a terrarium with good air flow though. The petola used to sprawl all around my terrarium. I also had selaginella in there and it was perfectly happy and I think it's an air movement issue.
You nailed it-they’re adorable but always feel like they’re stuck in “miniature mode”! 😂 Macodes sprawling in a terrarium sounds stunning, though. Maybe I need to give Selaginella another try with better airflow! 🌿
I use some peperomia in my tarantula enclosures, they work quite well as they stay compact. I do gravitate more towards larger plants in my own space though.
That’s such a creative use for Peperomias! 🕷️🌿 And I hear you-larger plants really do add that wow factor to a space! 😍 Also big 💚💚💚 on the Tarantula, I always wanted one, but I do not know if I can keep one happy 😬😅
Okay mine is without a doubt the Flamestar Calathea… I have a 3 strike rule with plants, if i failed 3 times the plants not for me. Well… I’m in LOVE with the flamestar so i always make an exception for it.. killed that thing so many times… and I’m great with calathea!!! I have loads, it’s JUST the flamestar 😩😩😩
Lmao..😂😂😂😂 I totally get ya. I totally went thru my entire collection and found all plants that I was just sick and tired of being sick and tired of the struggles and just flat assed tired of caring for. I binned them all...😂 I feel so much lighter. Stress is in a lot of areas in my life, but my plants should not be one of them. Thank you for sharing! I just love your honesty. No judging here.😊
Mine are anthirums, ferns & syngoninums. I live somewhere where these plants just absolutely hate it, either being eternally thirsty, eternally rotting or both at the same time😂 I give!
A. Silver is a tad slower than green form. I have about 7 different plants, 3 on cedar planks, 4 on Thiccly poles. They need constant strapping, quite snug, of the stem after each new leaf is pushed out to the pole or plank. It must be pretty snug, I use plastic wrap which looks terrible but it works and it pushes out beautifully fenestrated leaves. Sometimes the internodal spacing is about 4 inches, but try this. I does require constant attention and you can't miss strapping after every new leaf is pushed out.
Cissus discolor: I recently saw it in a botanical garden, where it was climbing and crawling on the walls of the greenhouse, its pipes and everywhere it could like a weed. It was gigantic and mesmerizingly beautiful. I wish I could grow it like this too - it is such a spectacular plant
That sounds absolutely stunning! 🌿 Cissus discolor really shines when it has space to go wild. Maybe one day we’ll both have our own indoor jungles for it to thrive like that! 😊
This was so versatile! Things you didn’t like Things that don’t work But still enthusiasm, very enjoyable 🌸 I have grown a cissus discolor, I purchased a started plant not one of those large ones, it grew quite easily, stopped growing in the winter and picked right back up in spring. I gave it to a friend and it grows well for her as well. They propagated easily in moss for me. Things I wont grow (again) (for now): - medium to large Alocasia… I can keep them alive… but not in the places where I want to put them and I cannot adapt those places to their liking and I refuse to have an “Alocasia tent” 😅 I am keeping 3 smaller ones in a cabinet but I am not buying more of them. - peperomias… just don’t do it for me, not the right vibe in my house (though maybe Ill get that fuzzy one someday) - African violets… I am with you… NO 😂. I do have an Episcia that I adore 🩷 - Large plants on stakes/mosspoles: my living room can only take about 3-4 of these and I don’t want them in other places in the house, they would be bumped into or otherwise in the way. So I have a few, but no more will enter the house (and a lot of them left the house to friends and family) - “rare” Scindapsus. There are still a few Scindapsi living in my house but in my opinion… If theres a splashy one and one or 2 different silver ones “you have them all” 😂 (I had about 10 of them at my Scindapsus peak). - Cane Begonia… they take up soooooo much space or have to be cut back soooooo often (and I don’t like binning cuttings, so they lead to sooooo many propagations) - anything finicky (except for some Hoyas): I look after my plants: water and feed them regularly, repot when needed, keep them pest free…. But I just cannot be bothered by plants that want a specific circumstance that requires a lot of equipment to keep it alive, I say NO 😅 (though the Hoyas did get a tent which is why they are the exception) - Succulents…. my mom has many adorable succulents 😍, but they are not meant for my house (old house, high humidity) I think thats it 🤔😊
Thank you! 😊 Loved hearing your thoughts-especially on Scindapsus. “If there’s a splashy one, you have them all” is SO relatable. 😂 Also, no shame in refusing an Alocasia tent-it’s a lifestyle choice! 😅🌿
@ hahaha they entered my house as cuttings…. Took forever to root and start growing…. I grew them out and realized I got bored with “the same plant everywhere” 😅 There are subtle differences though and I understand that people who like to collect can really appreciate those…. But for me… one or 2 (or 3) is enough… One hanging, one on a pole (it stays small so its not in the way)… wait, why do I have that third one again!? (I think it was to line a shelf but never got around to implementing it)
Omg, Memo, THIS, so much agree! I only forgive the black velvet, even though it' cranky. Everything else I agree. I could also name some more I would never want to grow
Wow. I bought seeds of Ficus benghalensis around 2011. So many seedlings. I kept 1 and got huge in my apartment. Summers out on the fire escape in full sun. Such an adaptable plant. I then sold them as I collected seeds of other banyans in Mexico and Florida that now excite me more, like Ficus obtusifolia, which grows even faster and puts out more leaves. Ficus are underrated.
That’s so cool! Ficus benghalensis really sounds like a powerhouse plant in your care. 🌳 Love hearing about your plant adventures-Ficus definitely deserve more love!
Hi, thanks for sharing the video. I have most of the plants you show in the video, I live in Florida. Begonias need to be kept moist at all times, as do African Violets, ground orchids, and Alocasias, except I mix in some soil with pebbles or sand and coconut fiber. I have had the climbing begonias for a year now, and they go dormant and then grow back every year. Keep this whole group of plants in a very bright spot, not in direct sunlight. Keep them in one spot at all times, do not move them.
I'm here to bring the nursing home vibe, and to hope that you've inspired people to evaluate their collections--it really is freeing to give away those plants that are just taking up space (and time, energy, resources ... 😆)
😂 Love the vibes you’re bringing, I'm right there with you! And yes, letting go of those space-hogging plants can be SO freeing. Huzzah to simplifying! 🌿
Crotons AND jewel orchids? You’re brave for even trying those! 😂 Friendship plants are a mystery to me too-they always seem too good to be true. I am glad I am not the only one with Hoya bella, everyone seems to keep them happy easily, I could never figure them out!
Totally fair! Tortum leaves are so unique, they definitely have a charm. 🌿 And yes, pest-prone plants definitely deserve the boot 🥾-the heartbreak is real! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I so understand I love peperomia. I was after a raindrop pep for ages. Finally got one. I had these huge amazing leaves. Finally put out some new leaves. There were small and disappointing. Then the big leaves fell off it's now an underwhelming plant. It's done nothing for 6 plus months. Great video Have fun
Hi friend! I agree with a lot of your struggles, certain things just won't work out. For me the hoya compacta does nothing. I want to love it so badly, but it grows so slowly.combined with my inconsistant watering, it has given me 6 leaves in 3 years, anf half of them have fallen off before maturing 😅
I used to think the same about African violate until I came across these Russian and Ukrainian varieties. Big flowers that almost look like medium sized roses. My biggest flower from an African violate is as big as 3 inches wide. I also find the trailing varieties interesting as I could shape them into like a bonsai.
Funny you should mention the Amydrium medium. I became interested in it years ago and gained the most knowledge from your video using the janky cork board 😂 Keep it touching and you will be gold with less runners! Thanks for the info!!
Haha, the janky cork board lives on! 😂 Thanks for the tip-keeping it touching definitely sounds like the key to taming those runners! Glad you enjoyed the video. 🌿
It’s always so interesting how different plants throw hissy fits for some people. The only person I know that has been successful with the Brandi is Jan SPG. On the other hand most of the planty people on RUclips seem to be okay growing the Tortum. I don’t have either! I have the Siltepecana, it grows like rubbish at my house 🤦♀️🇨🇦
So true-it’s wild how some plants thrive for one person and flop for another! 🌿 Siltepecana is such a hit-or-miss plant, isn’t it? 🤦♀️ Thanks for sharing your experiences!
I’ve been lucky with the one selaginella I’ve tried in my terrarium. It’s the Ruby Red one (so pretty). I just barely stuck the end in the substrate so it’s really just surviving off of the humidity I guess. It seems to be happy but it grows slowly. 🤷♀️ And there are no critters in there to trample it. 😂
Giggles, geriatric African violet, I actually laughed out loud. I used to have one think it passed last year after I forgot to water it a couple of times during the summer when I was working 15-20 days in a row. I tried saving it but was too far gone the second time. I will probably get another. I just haven't really been looking for one. Or even seen any available, might even get a few with different coloured flowers and put them all together 😊
Haha, glad I could give you a laugh! 😂 African Violets really do have a mind of their own sometimes. Good luck with your next one-they can be worth the effort! 💜
Selaginella, ughh! I've tried and tried. Most recent one was a couple months ago and thought I was gonna do better with it in terrarium like condition and it like IMMEDIATELY melted and molded lol. Every single time I've had one, does not matter how I try growing it. So sad, they're really beautiful!
I am a calathea fan, I have many… but I threw one calathea and one maranta in the trash 🤣 These 2 doesn’t want to life in my home 🫡 It’s ok, plants are fun relaxing not stressful and annoying 💛 Ficus Audrey, I sell mine 2 years ago, this plant was happy and cool, but my cat love it and it’s toxic. Peperomia I kill 3 or 4 😅😆 it’s just cute do nothing very meh, I always lost interest and with ADHD I forget their existence and they die 🫣 very fun video Memo 💛 I love this type of video
Calatheas and Marantas really test your patience, don’t they? 😅 Loved your story about your Ficus Audrey-cats always know how to pick the toxic ones, don’t they? 😂
"Nursing home vibes" 😂. You crack me up Memo. I'd agree with all of those and add calathea zebrina and red veined maranta. Mine are growing nicely but in a humidity tent. Is it worth the bother...NO!!
I'm going to have to remove the Philodendron tortum from my wishlist now. It sounds like that plant will test my patience too much. I was already debating whether or not I even had the space for it anyway (I don't, I was lying to myself). The Alocasia reginula is still on there, though. I don't need it to be velvet, I just need a little black alocasia to fill a hole in my little black heart.
Haha, I get it! Tortum is definitely a test of patience-and if space is already tight, it’s probably for the best. 😅 As for the Alocasia reginula, I fully support that addition! A little black Alocasia sounds like the perfect cure for a little black heart. 🖤🌿 Good luck filling that spot in your collection! 😊
For me this was calathea white fusion... and then the yellow one too.. three times I tried to keep leaves happy, but every time it turned out a crispy mess 😂😂😂
It surprised me that the monstera amydrium medium made the list. Mine is growing well (it's on a moss pole), though not quite as fast as my other monsteras. I consider myself a beginner planty person, so it always surprises me when the planty peeps I admire aren't having as much kuck with a specific plant as myself. I think I just assume you guys know more than me and therefore are like planty magicians that can grow anything super well 😅
Queen Anthurium. I just got two new ones this week. I will try again and again. I think these are No. 12 and 13. Something like that. And I will crack them!!!
Oh, peperomia. I agree that it depends on the growing conditions, but they look way better on SM than in my home. I've owned Watermelon, Red Ripple, and Frost. The Watermelon is long gone, Red Ripple (2+ y.o. and looks like a garden weed in my care at this point) is almost on its way out to find a better home. Frost is the last peperomia standing, thanks to its unusual spiky blooms. Underwhelming and too fragile? Yes and yes for me as well.
You might want to get in touch with the guys from Jungle leaves (here on RUclips) if you want to try selaginella again ^^ they specialize in terrarium plants and have a bunch of different selaginella. Perhaps they can give you some advice
😂 I love my tortum so far. I bought a small one with 2 leaves and my 2 y/o bent the new leaf. I tried the straw trick by making a brace for it. It works great and I’m now getting a 3rd leaf 😁. We’ll see how I feel about him later down the road. I was thinking of making a kokedama with him and seeing if that will give him more interest.
'I don't want to see you, let alone take a picture of you' 😂😂😂 Totally agree, it's sooo ugly, sorry. 😅 I've that with all the plants that are of similar looks, also all those climbing Monsteras with more holes than leaves etc. I wouldn't have one if they paid me. 😆 Black Velvet - I think it's more suede like. I just recently got one and at the moment I like it. Don't know if I'll get bored with it fast, as has happened with anything Dragon, Gloriosum White Vein, Jose Buono and a few others lol. 😅 I understand what you mean about Peperomias. I have that with any of them that are very colourful and have small leaves. I do looove my P. Sarcophylla, such fleshy and big leaves, the biggest one is 15 cm atm, and I badly want to add an Elongata to the collection. My newest addition is Philo. Summer Glory. I'm blown away by how much I like this plant. Photos and videos truly don't do it justice.
@@Houseplantygoodness I've come to learn that the more 'in your face' the plant the sooner it will bore me. More subtle beauties keep my interest alive. And getting so tired of the variegation hype. Give me deep green leaves any time of the day. 💗
Cercestis mirabilis! Oh my goodness this is my one and done plant. So beautiful and I wanted it to grow so badly but it just did nothing! It didn't die but it only put out runners and looked sad forever
Hello Memo, hearing you talk about the Ficus I immediately remembered "Little Shop Of Horrors" which I recently watched again. Have you ever tried.... I hope you know the movie or the play. Plants which I would not buy anymore: Some varigated plants which are absolutely not stable as Monstera Adansonii, M. Siltepecana, M. Karstenianum or Raphidophora Tetrasperma. Also Philodendron Burle Marx was a pain in.... (full green or full "white"). At least the last one grows very fast and you can cut it with a chainsaw and start it again. Because of their growth pattern I would also not buy again Philodendrons of the Erubescens type (Pink Lady, Red Anderson, Strawberry Shake and White Knight, Wizard, Princess....). Not recommendable P. Brandtianum. Or P. Melanochrisum (Gigas seems to grow better!) and P. Verrucosum. But at least the last one is so pretty that I just bought an "Amazon Sunset" again. These plants are tricky to grow. Perhaps the Verrucosum needs a little lower temperature at night? Keep on feeding your mealybugs! Gerd
Yea i feel u on the ficus audrey. I bought one in a crunch for my mom when i chopped up her Umbrella tree lol. Had no clue what it was, I jus bought it. Fast fwd 3 years it has grown MANY leaves, but them shits are so tiny hahaha. WHELMED is an understatement. I hate lookin at it 😅. Oh, and as much as I love some philos, i will never buy one again!! Micans, Melano, glorious, and Rubi something another..
My peperomias thrive and I like them well enough... I just root the broken bits and gift them. The plants I will never buy again are phalaenopsis orchids from the supermarket. I have other orchids that thrive and rebloom, some for decades, but those guys rot out no matter what I do (repot, uppot, refresh substrate, fertilize etc.) after a couple of years.
I enjoy these types of videos because it sheds lights the vast variety of experiences we have in the hobby. Plus, we all have those plants we despise 🙄 For me the Pink Princess Philodendron: I have bought that plant at least 5 times (or more). I’ve bought cheap specimens, more expensive specimens, big, small, medium; it all resulted in the same disappointing experience. I’m simply done mentally and physically with the Pink Princess. I would much rather continue to struggle with my Alocasia Jacklyn and its spider mites. At least the Jacklyn is growing… alongside its spider mite friends but it’s growing. Lol The Pink Princess was just never rewarding: it was stagnant, grew distorted, horrible. Like, what does it want?! It’s tragic and a fraud, in my experience.
I like the tortum but killed 2 :( , I do like african violets but prefer them with intense colored flowers . Brandtianum grows nicely ut doesn't size up, not to bad because I dont have space for it if it does. Got the black velvet but not to keen on it, and mine is dark green, it can stay and maye I'll like it better when it gets bigger ( more leaves )
And I love spiderplants; I can never grow them inside except babies in water. They grow fine outside, but can never keep a larger, even medium size one alive. Yet my gorgeous, lucious philodendrons, syngoniums, monsteras, even alocacias, all thriving. I give up. 😂
Hello. Could you make a video on the best lower humidity Antherium. .. I just bought an Antherium silver blush. Living in my ikea cabinet at the moment. I would like it displayed outside ikea cabinet. Also, I have Antherium clarinervium seedling in the ikea cabinet that I would love it to grow outside the cabinet. I have Antherium crystallinum seedling as well. Thank you sooo much. love your channel
Missed you! Always interesting videos.I like syngoniums;however;the leave go wonky,do not always open. No more!!!90 % of this years new hybrid philos just don't do it.
Memo. My friend. The Tortum is gorgeous. It's easy. You. Did. Not. Try. Hard. Enough. :D Kidding. Glad mine is doing well. But hey, my Philodendron heterocraspedon died. I did get a refund.
I've always hated the ficus lol. Maybe it's because I've seen so many dusty plastic ones in office settings, they all look fake and bland to me now. Then I heard they were high maintenance and the deal was sealed- like where do you get off being so high maintenance when you're so.. ugly?? Sorry 😭😭
To be honest, there isn't a plant I met that I dislike. For me, it is more about the environment I live in. It is not conducive to certain plants thriving. I live in the desert end of California-dry as a bone. I also have limited space so it is not like I can just bring in "whatever" into my place. I don't bother with plants that require a lot of space. Philodendrons require a lot space as do anthuriums. Sometimes it's a matter of knowing which battles to take on. There is a certain Hoya... H. archboldiana that I tried twice. It is not an inexpensive plant to acquire, but I may try one more time... because flowers. It's the same reason I bother with orchids. That Alocasia black velvet, its more the look of velvet rather than the feel of velvet... Haha.. It is a small plant. This one I can keep and I do have one. I also like African violets I have 5 some of which produce ruffled blooms. I also have a Streptocarpus, another African violet relative. For that moss-like plant... it is related to moss, treat it like moss. Use distilled water. If you must use tap water get water conditioner, the same as used for keeping fish aquariums, to get rid of the chlorine in the water. Use fertilizer intended for the same.
Tradescantia as a whole, I will never grow again. I jumped on the hype train with them years ago and hated them the whole time. I struggled so much growing them unless they were in water. Their blooms are cute, I'll give them that, but I cannot stand tradescantia now and they are banned from the house.
I refuse to purchase African violets. I’ve purchased 2 in my life and they are doing great for awhile and then turn to 💩 dramatically fast. Idk what I did but I’m over it
It looks like you did not try to find an info from real African violets growers ( not RUclipsrs)!!! The rules are easy. 1) It has a thread-thin roots. Therefore, the size of the pot can be only 1/3 of the diameter of the rosette. 2) the substrate is peat/perlite, nothing else. 3) You have to repot/ re-root it TWICE a year. 4) Bottom water or have it on a wick. 5)Pinch off the suckers between leaves. That's all. I had had about 300 varieties years ago. Now I have only about 35-40 really favorites.
Thank you for all the tips-this is amazing info! 🙌 With that many varieties, you clearly know your African violets! 💜 Maybe I’ll have to give them another shot someday.
Number 4 is very important- I started wick watering and their all still alive ! the AVSA has a african violet honor roll of the best plants and most of them seem easier to me . A grow light makes it much easier- you can use a cheap shop light .
Noooo! Do not use geriatric and nursing home in negative sence! Lets make these places cool again, right! Our relatives are there, you are a stone throw away from them so no not appreciating grannies! Ok? Ok.
Audrey, among 14 other types of my ficuses is the easiest. I grow it from a starter plant. Now it is too big, and I'm going to cut it. Due to our crazy seasonal room humidity, it grows long aerial roots (it is by the window). It's been on a fridge by the window and this spot is too dark for most of my other plants. Gives me 1 leaf in month or 1,5 months. Now I know that if I want to stop it somehow, I need to put it in semi hydro. It is in peat + perlite 60\40. It likes to get dry. It didn't get thrips (from 5-7 times). It had a bit of spider mites once. Have only 2 Peperomias left (from 6) both with very succulent leaves. I can read my Alocasias like a book, but can't read Peperomias somehow. My Black Velvet feels velvety, but it is still juvenile and not that black, just deep green. Before I forget. If you'll ever want to get another Alocasia try Puncak Barneoenis. It feels you may like the look of it, and it is forgiving one. I love the colour of Brandtianum but it gives me small small leaves only. I enjoyed this video a lot. Thank you!
Wow, you’re a Ficus pro! 🌱 Audrey sounds like it’s thriving in your care. Thanks for the tip about Alocasia Puncak Barneoenis-it’s going on my wishlist! 💚
Great video thank you 💚🪴 I try to do a plant clear out each year and it makes me feel soooo much better about giving away some of my plants that just aren’t working for me. The peperomia tip was great as well thank you - to think of it as a filler plant. I have one that I was just about to give away as I’ve been thinking of it as a thriller plant and it just doesn’t work for me like that 🪴
It's so interesting to hear peoples' vastly different experiences with plants!
Wow, your Philodendron Tortum sounds like a fighter! 💪 And I totally feel you on the Anthurium struggles-I couldn't either with the clarinvervium! 😅
My Ph. tortum is propably the only plant that I have that never has given me any fuss at all :)
Bravo Memo👏 Enjoyed the video. Nice sweater, by the way.
Thank you so much! 🧥🌿 Glad you enjoyed it-your support means the world! 💚
I appreciate the honesty in this video. Thanks Memo! 🌿💕
Thank you for watching! 💕 I love keeping it real with you all-your support means so much! 🌿
Yay, new video! 🫶
Yay! Thanks for watching! 🫶 Always love seeing these types of comments! 🌿
Thanks Memo you made me feel better about not loving some of my plants anymore 💚
Aw, I’m so glad! 💚 It’s all about finding what sparks joy in your space! 🪴
lol the way you roasted these plants 😂
😂 Gotta bring a little humor to the struggles, right? Glad you enjoyed it! 💚
Hi Memo, really nice jumper - it suits you.
Alocasia reginula Black Velvet:
I recommend trying its hybrid Ninja instead - it´s blacker, velvet, embossed thicker leaves, has cooler veination, and generally it is stocky and seems to get bigger leaves. It´s one of my favourite plants because it´s so pretty (grows well in pon and a self-watering pot).
Peperomia:
I have been struggling for 3 years with Peperomia argyreia (watermelon), water propagated cuttings growing in pon.
Haha....Im happy to hear that I'm not the only one that struggles with some plants! Love your shows Memo!
Thank you so much, Sam! 💚 You’re definitely not alone-plant struggles are part of the journey! 🌿
Same here-it’s so fascinating how different plants thrive (or don’t) in different hands! 🌿 Your Audrey Ficus sounds like a star! 💚
It was a really fun video Memo! I find it so silly that you have to (and most plantubers) disclaim that this is your opinion and please people don't be offended if I bash a plant you like. It's just plants, people need to chill we all have different preferences and growing conditions why be offended if I say I don't like some plant? So weird.
Thank you so much! 🙌 It’s wild how defensive people can get over plants-it’s all just for fun and sharing experiences! Glad you enjoyed it. 💕
Haha, Brandtianum really had to make the list! 😅 Your Amydrium story is so inspiring-sounds like you really cracked the code for it! 🌱👏
Wow, you must really love that Flamestar to keep trying! 💚 It’s amazing how we can be stubborn for certain plants, right? 😂
😂 Plants with eternal thirst or rot-it’s like they can’t make up their minds! Hang in there-you’re doing your best! 💚
I have been feeling the same lately about some of my plants and I started purging because I'm bored with them
It’s so freeing, right? 🌿 Sometimes you just gotta let them go! 😊
Constant strapping and plastic wrap? 😅 That’s dedication! Your plants must look incredible-totally worth the effort! 🌱
Cissus discolor:
I recently saw it in a botanical garden, where it was climbing and crawling on the walls of the greenhouse, its pipes and everywhere it could like a weed.
Things you didn’t like
Things that don’t work
But still enthusiasm, very enjoyable 🌸
I have grown a cissus discolor, I purchased a started plant not one of those large ones, it grew quite easily, stopped growing in the winter and picked right back up in spring. I gave it to a friend and it grows well for her as well.
They propagated easily in moss for me.
Things I wont grow (again) (for now):
- medium to large Alocasia… I can keep them alive… but not in the places where I want to put them and I cannot adapt those places to their liking and I refuse to have an “Alocasia tent” 😅 I am keeping 3 smaller ones in a cabinet but I am not buying more of them.
- peperomias… just don’t do it for me, not the right vibe in my house (though maybe Ill get that fuzzy one someday)
- African violets… I am with you… NO 😂. I do have an Episcia that I adore 🩷
- Large plants on stakes/mosspoles: my living room can only take about 3-4 of these and I don’t want them in other places in the house, they would be bumped into or otherwise in the way. So I have a few, but no more will enter the house (and a lot of them left the house to friends and family)
- “rare” Scindapsus. There are still a few Scindapsi living in my house but in my opinion… If theres a splashy one and one or 2 different silver ones “you have them all” 😂 (I had about 10 of them at my Scindapsus peak).
- Cane Begonia… they take up soooooo much space or have to be cut back soooooo often (and I don’t like binning cuttings, so they lead to sooooo many propagations)
- anything finicky (except for some Hoyas): I look after my plants: water and feed them regularly, repot when needed, keep them pest free…. But I just cannot be bothered by plants that want a specific circumstance that requires a lot of equipment to keep it alive, I say NO 😅 (though the Hoyas did get a tent which is why they are the exception)
- Succulents…. my mom has many adorable succulents 😍, but they are not meant for my house (old house, high humidity)
I think thats it 🤔😊
I grew them out and realized I got bored with “the same plant everywhere” 😅
There are subtle differences though and I understand that people who like to collect can really appreciate those….
But for me… one or 2 (or 3) is enough…
One hanging, one on a pole (it stays small so its not in the way)… wait, why do I have that third one again!? (I think it was to line a shelf but never got around to implementing it)
16:37 extra coddling? HAHA! African violets are very resilient plants. I ignore mine monthly!
Haha, maybe I’m just overthinking them! 😂 Monthly ignoring might be the secret sauce! Thanks for sharing your wisdom. 💜
Omg, Memo, THIS, so much agree! I only forgive the black velvet, even though it' cranky. Everything else I agree. I could also name some more I would never want to grow
Thank you! 🙌 And yes, Black Velvet does have a bit of charm despite its crankiness! 🌿
Seleginella… agree 1000% . I tried indoor and outdoor, but no luck. That one is definitely off the list 😢
Ugh, same! Selaginella is SO finicky-it’s like it knows how much we love it and melts just to spite us. 😢
Wow, your setup sounds amazing! 🌿 Thanks for sharing all those tips-climbing begonias going dormant and returning each year is so cool! 💚
For me it’s Philo Melano and Verro, Hoya Bella, any variety of “friendship plants”, and CROTONS. OH!!! and jewel orchids!!
Crotons AND jewel orchids? You’re brave for even trying those! 😂 Friendship plants are a mystery to me too-they always seem too good to be true. I am glad I am not the only one with Hoya bella, everyone seems to keep them happy easily, I could never figure them out!
I was all the way with you on preferences until the Tortum.
Mine didn’t grow well in
Totally fair! Tortum leaves are so unique, they definitely have a charm. 🌿 And yes, pest-prone plants definitely deserve the boot 🥾-the heartbreak is real! Thanks for sharing your thoughts!
I trust you know that the discolor drops it’s leaves over winter and starts over in the spring. Kind of shocking behavior. Love your channel ❤
Yep, it’s definitely a shocking habit! 😅 It’s like it wants to keep us guessing. Thanks for watching-your support means so much! ❤️
I so understand
I love peperomia. I was after a raindrop pep for ages. Finally got one. I had these huge amazing leaves. Finally put out some new leaves. There were small and disappointing. Then the big leaves fell off it's now an underwhelming plant. It's done nothing for 6 plus months.
Great video
Have fun
Raindrop Peperomia is SO pretty, but it can be such a letdown when it doesn’t thrive. 😩 Glad you enjoyed the video! Have fun with your plants! 💚
Hi friend! I agree with a lot of your struggles, certain things just won't work out. For me the hoya compacta does nothing. I want to love it so badly, but it grows so slowly.combined with my inconsistant watering, it has given me 6 leaves in 3 years, anf half of them have fallen off before maturing 😅
Ugh, Hoya Compacta is such a tease, isn’t it? 😅 Six leaves in three years is a slow burn for sure. Fingers crossed it gives you more love soon! 🌿
As I mentioned earlier, I have a Philodendron grazielae on my THIRD attempt. Now it looks like I don't have nerves left.
Oh no, third time’s the charm? Or just done? 😅 Grazielae definitely seems like it tests patience levels. Hope your current one thrives! 🌱
Ooh, Ruby Red Selaginella sounds gorgeous! ❤️ Sounds like you've found its happy spot-terrariums can work wonders! 🌿
Selaginella is SO tricky! 😩 I totally get the frustration-it’s such a shame since they’re so beautiful! 💔
I love the look of my amedurium medium silver and finally got a new leaf which is exciting but I get what you say taken months for a new leaf x
Yay for a new leaf! 🌿 They do take forever, but it’s so rewarding when they finally grow. Keep at it-you’ve got this! 💚
Haha, glad you got a laugh! 😂 Totally agree-humidity tents for plants like Calatheas can feel like way too much effort sometimes!
Oh, Calathea White Fusion is a crispy mess waiting to happen! 😂 Three tries is impressive-those plants definitely make you work for it! 🌿
I think I just assume you guys know more than me and therefore are like planty magicians that can grow anything super well 😅
Haha, planty magicians we are not! 😂 It’s so cool that your Amydrium is thriving on a moss pole though-sounds like you’ve got the magic touch! 🌿
Queen Anthurium. I just got two new ones this week. I will try again and again. I think these are No. 12 and 13. Something like that. And I will crack them!!!
Hey Tanya 👋👋👋 Wow, 12 and 13?! That’s dedication! 👑 I love your determination-you’ll crack the Queen Anthurium code someday, I just know it! 🌿💪
That’s a great tip-thank you! 🙌 I might just check them out if I ever dare to try Selaginella again! 😂
Black Velvet - I think it's more suede like. I just recently got one and at the moment I like it. Don't know if I'll get bored with it fast, as has happened with anything Dragon, Gloriosum White Vein, Jose Buono and a few others lol. 😅
I understand what you mean about Peperomias.
Haha, exactly! 😂 Some plants just give off those vibes, right? Loved hearing your thoughts-your Philo. Summer Glory sounds stunning! 🌿💚
Alocasa Polly, most large leafed philodendrons, monstera obliqua, to name a few. 😅
Alocasia Polly definitely has a reputation! 😅 And Monstera Obliqua? It’s like they want to make us work for every leaf. 🌿
My cissus would've dropped leaves if I missed a watering but it rebounds well. Now I have it in a cabinet and it's pretty happy. I just ignore it.
Sounds like your Cissus is living its best life in that cabinet! 🌿 Sometimes a little benign neglect is the secret sauce. 😊
Thank you and bye bye prayer like plants!!
Haha, goodbye, indeed! 🙌 They really can be too much sometimes!
Absolutely love the Tortum, I have tried a few times but I just can’t get it through winter. No more now 😢 I have moved on to philodendron Elegans 👍
It's ferns and Peperomia for me. I love them, but it gets way too hot for them in the house in the summer, they just can't take it. :(
Same here-ferns and Peperomias can be divas in hot weather! 😩
Hello Memo,
hearing you talk about the Ficus I immediately remembered "Little Shop Of Horrors" which I recently watched again. Have you ever tried....
I hope you know the movie or the play.
Plants which I would not buy anymore:
Some varigated plants which are absolutely not stable as Monstera Adansonii, M.
“Whelmed” is the perfect word for Ficus Audrey. 😂 And I hear you on the Philos-sometimes they can be more stress than they’re worth! 🌿
I am thinking the name black Velvet is about the appearance and not the feel. Looking at it the plant does appear velvety regardless of how it feels
@@Plantdaddytips makes sense!
You’re probably right! 🌿 It definitely has that rich, velvety look-even if it doesn’t feel that way! 😅
@@Houseplantygoodness I love your channel. Thanks for all the content
Yes you're right, I killed my cissus discolour... very quickly
You’re definitely not alone! Cissus discolor has claimed many victims-it’s just too finicky for its own good. 😅
omg can u do a lil post about ur hanging baskets !! 🫶🏻
You might enjoy Senk's violets. They are grown for their strange foliage
Tortums are tricky, aren’t they? 😅 And intense-colored African Violets really are worth the effort-those blooms are stunning! 💜
I won’t say NEVER but Calathea, Diffenbachia, most ferns
Haha, fair enough! Calatheas and ferns really do test our patience sometimes. 😂
10:37 black velvets and definitely fuzzy so maybe you could have received some kind of mix-up?
Peperomia and alocasia..allllll of them
Haha, totally feel you! 😅 Both can be so hit-or-miss.
@Houseplantygoodness the first is suicidle, and the second is a pest magnet..no thanks 😊
And I love spiderplants; I can never grow them inside except babies in water. They grow fine outside, but can never keep a larger, even medium size one alive. Yet my gorgeous, lucious philodendrons, syngoniums, monsteras, even alocacias, all thriving. I give up. 😂
Spiderplants are so finicky! 😅 Meanwhile, your other plants sound like they’re living their best lives-guess we can’t win them all, right? 😂
Mine are spider, croton, suctulent. Have had all 3 or 4 times and they died every time. They hate me😁
😂 It’s like those plants came with a grudge! 🌱
Throughout the video your funky smile is too cute adorable....love from India
Haha, I totally deserve that roast! 😂 Glad your Tortum is thriving-it really is a stunning plant. Sorry about your Heterocraspedon, though!
Hypoestes phyllostachya, the polka dot plant 😔 I love her but she doesn’t care for me.
The Black Velvet is also a problem for me. When she dies, never again.
To be fair, my friend, you are an acquired taste.... 🤣
Aww, polka dot plants can be such divas! 😩 But they’re sooo cute it’s hard not to love them. Maybe one day it’ll love you back! 🌸
@ unfortunately, that time has passed. Never again.
@@soberplantguy Touché.
New Verb: "Whelm"......make an impression.....can be used to denote favorability or not.
Scindapsus Trebuii Moonlight, gifted from my mother cause she didnt want it either 😂
Hi 😊 for me to the cissus goes down. I killed two of them and it's a shame because they are beautiful 😊😊
I've always hated the ficus lol. Maybe it's because I've seen so many dusty plastic ones in office settings, they all look fake and bland to me now. Then I heard they were high maintenance and the deal was sealed- like where do you get off being so high maintenance when you're so.. ugly?? Sorry 😭😭
😂😂 High maintenance and dusty plastic vibes? I can’t blame you! Thanks for the laugh-your honesty is gold!
I think the alocasia ninja is more velvety than the black velvet.
You might be right! I’ve heard so many good things about Ninja-it’s definitely on my wishlist now. Thanks for sharing! 😊
Any Alocasia, anthuriums unless its the pedalloflodium which is great. Weirdly enough I do great with ficus audrey and ficus lyrata. Begonias hate me.
Tradescantia as a whole, I will never grow again. I jumped on the hype train with them years ago and hated them the whole time. I struggled so much growing them unless they were in water. Their blooms are cute, I'll give them that, but I cannot stand tradescantia now and they are banned from the house.
Probably geogenanthus ciliatus.
That’s a tough one for sure! 🌱
I refuse to purchase African violets. I’ve purchased 2 in my life and they are doing great for awhile and then turn to 💩 dramatically fast. Idk what I did but I’m over it
The alocasia black velvet is more a suede!
Totally agree! It’s like plant fashion-it’s less velvet and more suede chic. 😄🌱
Ok? Ok.
Greetings and love from Finland. I loooove your channel and will❤
Haha, fair point! 💕 Let’s reclaim the cool vibes for nursing homes and our beloved grannies! 🌿 Thanks for keeping it real!

I have one that I was just about to give away as I’ve been thinking of it as a thriller plant and it just doesn’t work for me like that 🪴
African Violet: "It's giving nursing home" 🥲💀
😂 Right?! It’s such a vibe you can’t unsee. Thanks for watching and laughing along! 💜
