On the strength of this review I purchased a 12V 100Ah Chins. The price is now down to $349 and available on Amazon. The battery arrived in about 10 days and is at the correct voltage. I will continue to use and report back any difficulties. Thanks Will. UPDATE: 2 100AH Chin's in parallel providing power to a 3000W Samlex inverter for sump pump backup application. Power required for sump is way below this "overkill" set-up. Intermittent cycling and no issues whatsoever. Battery's working 100% as specified...very pleased!
Update: I have 2 100V Chins LiFePO4 batteries purchased via Amazon about 10 months ago, as above. I subsequently found that the internal batteries were pouch cells other than the prismatic that I was led to believe. I contacted Chins and they confirmed they were "soft cells" or pouch. I complained and they offered to replace them with prismatic. They sent me a PREPAID UPS return label and I returned them for a swap. I received the new cells before they even received my return. I consider this the BEST customer service of any manufacturer I've dealt with! Bravo Chins!.
@@loganrexroat3063 Yes, no problems however this application is very, very intermittent. Sitting in a standby mode the batteries remain at full voltage.
Great for me, don't care for low temperature i live in the Caribbean. Bought 2 batteries first for $439.99 then $399.99 , after that it's all the way up to $469.99 and its the only one that sends to Puerto Rico. To me is a win/win.
@@Dave5843-d9m Coldest I have ever seen here was in 1977. 26°F/-3.33°C here in South Florida. And I had to spend the whole night on frost/freeze watch. The water in the last sprinklers on the lines on a 10 acre plot froze up. And that was with 60PSI on the pump and 70° water temp out of the ground. I was there as mechanic on duty in case of pump failures. That was a cold night on watch over about 60 acres of experiments. Everything here struggles when it gets that cold. Locals struggle when the temps drop below 70°. ;-)
The cost of batteries is what has prevented me from getting solar panels, so it is wonderful to see a cheaper battery is available. Thank you for your video!!!
I adore you you don't need to get mad about 'things' from anywhere too much. I am impressed how you taught me clearly about electricity beyond even just solar tech. You are Fab (80s) don't forget it!
Battleborn may finally need to start lowering their prices with units like these hitting the market. BB are nice but their prices are just obnoxious at this point.
China pays ridiculously low labor . Plus our government gives them favored status to keep their taxes low. Cheap prices cost human lives. If you want American jobs, it cost more.
@@richardclark8520 This is an absolute fact. But average joe/Josephine isn’t going to care, as long as they get their stuff cheap. As long as the pollution, forced labor, and wretched conditions are “over there”, it’s not our fault.
There's a lot of people who automatically equate high price to best quality. There's a market niche for that, and while sales are slower they're steadier and remain more stable in swings of the economy. Doing business does cost more in the US than China just like living in NYC costs more than living in Alabama. It's not all 'slave labor' in China; just that where it costs less to live you can do equally well with lower wages, so lower wages will exist allowing companies to sell their product at lower prices. You can make high profit on low sales numbers or low profit on high sales numbers and both end up with the same net profit. That's BB's established market niche so they're not likely to drop their prices even if they can- why invite competition and a chance of losing when you've got the game won already?
Today am gonna start by giving you a like before i watch, you tought me how to install my own DIY solar rig, since then i have never light a candle in my home ever since.
Thanks Will! I've been hoping you would do a tear down on one of these. I've got the 300ah version, and absolutely love it . I feel even better after you've given it the once over! Aloha buddy
As a general contractor, I love our oscillating saws. With that said, you need either the somewhat newer dewalt 4-1/2” circular saw and set the blade depth very shallow to cut the batter cases. The second option, and possibly better, would be a dremel circular saw attachment. These sure would make your tear down process faster, easier, and likely even safer.
Amazing! Thank you. Rick Pierce gave you props on Bass Talk Live today. Talk about a huge shout out. Congrats. When your content is awesome, it’s reaches far and wide.
Thank you for confirming that having all my batts in my root cellar at a constant 57⁰F that I don't need to worry about low temp sensors to start with!👍
I recently got one of these, works well. They have another version they call their smart version, it has a built in heating pad and low temp disconnect. Apparently at low temps it uses the power from the charger to run the heating pad so that it doesn't use the cells to power the heating. Once it's above the temp needed to charge then it switches to charging. I'd be curious to see how that works.
Andy - I just wonder if without a cutoff if the batteries will be depleted to zero before they warm up enough to actually be useful. I live in the north and some people live at high altitudes so a 20 below zero week is not unheard of.
@@kfclist793 In a place like that other than the LTO chemistry you probably want your batteries in an insulated and ideally climate controlled space. The BMS will basically just disconnect the battery in that setup and all your charging power up to whatever the heaters limit is would go to heating but it probably would not be enough to overcome that cold. You would likely need a separate heating system as well.
I bought two of the Ampere Time 12v 200AH last spring for $1840 including shipping and tax. I've been happy with them so far. Added a RV water tank heater to prevent freezing/charging issues.
I take amazon reviews with a grain of salt these days. Vendors are still bribing buyers to leave 5 star reviews. But these videos blow away those reviews (legit or not) since you actually show us the hardware and data points. I saw this battery and I assumed those reviews were bought and paid for and the battery was junk. So your review here shows I was wrong. Kind of like the renogy which you've shown is junk.
@@P_RO_ Agree, but they are taking their time. I attempted to post a review stating product came with a note to leave 5 star review for a gift card and amazon wouldn't post it. So while it is a start, they really are not trying too hard to stop it, and it isn't for lack of resources.
You need to use a product for a longer period of time to know what it is good for. And you can't tell if a battery is good or not by just looking at the parts in it. That is like looking under the hood of a car and using the car for one trip, and then saying that this engine looks really good, this a review and this is a really good car. People that don't know better are buying products based on 'reviews' like this.
@@milcotto4153 You get a good idea if it's going to be a decent battery by the quality it was put together and the components. Without these reviews you could end up with a renogy battery that he tore apart and showed how shoddy it was. It's all a risk, even reputable lead acids can be bad. People are way easily bought and influenced so you never know about most of these reviews for that matter.
Refreshing, a novice to pro can understand and relate to a very straightforward presentation on the topic and move forward with no hesitations AND I am getting up to speed quickly! So much to take in. Thank you!
where i live temps don't fall below 10c even in the coldest day of year it gets to 7c for a night only .. so low temp protection does not matter for me anyways and cells would be discharging at night in a warm server room .
This one is available in the UK from Battery Masters under the Ultramax LI100-12 and LI100-12BLU brand/model, and taking VAT in to account, that is 10% cheaper than Will quotes.
@@urbanimage I was bored, so I looked around then called them, they watched the video and confirmed the insides are the same. Apparently, the 'real' factory/maker will add any brand you want (in any color if you order a lot, but black is the default no extra charge color). The Chins brand is just another brand, and not the real company that makes them.
@@trevornelmes9331 if you search on Alibaba you'll soon see this. Literally 100's of batteries many with exactly the same blurb. If you find gen manufacturers they list the minimum quantities for custom branding. I've spent ages finding a direct Lithium only battery producer. Ages!
@@trevornelmes9331 I looked at those and dismissed them - on account of their very low charge capacity. 10Ah. In MHO a east of time bc one of the huge benefits of lithium is it's recover rate and if the battery acts as choke then your stuffed. Any thoughts please? (I'm in the 'shire and needing 24v x 400Ah..)
This is by far the best channel for lithium batteries and information about them by far. This guy is so smart it’s scary! I think I still want to DIY 3 batteries for my boat. Thank you!!
I'm curious if you got the "plus" version or the regular one.. I keep seeing a "plus" variant listed, and it made me wonder if they made them with and without low temp cutoffs. We live in such an incredible time for battery technology though. This is SUCH A CHEAP drop in 100ah replacement! With the right solar controller, you could slap this into the battery box on 90% of all campers/RV's out there and it's barely any more $$ than an AGM from one of the leading companies, and have almost double the useable amp hours, taking up roughly the same amount of space, but with quite a bit less weight. What a great time to be alive!
I just bought the "Smart" version with low temp disconnect and self heating. Ill be throwing it in the freezer and hooking it up to a charger as soon as I get it
I have four of these batteries. The first two, one of the two had a BMS problem. Chins replaced both batteries Immediately. Awesome batteries and Awesome company to deal with.
In one of these videos, (ampere time, zooms, chins) he mentions that he found "Enjoybot" inside. They have their own batteries out now, not rebranded, WITH low temp charge protection!
I have 3 of the Chins 200Ah batteries in my rv and have no complaints. I had one that the case was virtually destroyed in shipping, but the vendor refunded me for it and gave me a discount on a new one with no trouble. As you mentioned, they're well built and perform well. Low temp protection is unfortunate, but I have them in my enclosed, heated storage bay, so I'm not too concerned.
We all know shock value adds major funding potential. Matthew should change up his show and sometime try to blow up a battery, again just for fun, lol!
First and foremost, YOU are the one who I trust about anything solar online!!!! You do an awesome job in your education!...... Sounds like, if a customer isn't too concerned about a low temp sensor scenario, then this can be a GREAT option!!! I'm thinkin about an indoor solar generator with solar panels outdoors that will run a split system AC ALL the time using 220V on it's own independent circuit all to itself. This will take a large load off my home AC that should lower my electric bill. Am I thinking logically? Correctly?
I bought this battery because I watched this video. I waited until you did a review. However, I did not understand the links and how they worked, until I watched one of your 1-year-old videos on how you make money from RUclips. Lol. I wish I had a do over. I would have clicked on your link and bought it through it. I will from now on. Thank you for your insight on all these solar products. Keep on telling the truth my friend. I love the way you operate.
I believe they ship from a California warehouse, rather than an Amazon warehouse. This means they may update their in stock in small quantities to prevent people from buying all of their stock at once at a cheap price. Likely they will raise the price slowly. I’m an Amazon seller and this is what I do with a hot products. 😇😋
I purchased a set of these (200A) for a battery installation in an unheated barn. It was winter, and I had a chance to test the low temperature feature. My limited tests went very well. So far, I am quite pleased.
Apparently the “smart” versions of these batteries include not just low-temp protection but also an internal heater to bring the batteries up above freezing. They’re rated for -35°C ambient! Pretty smart indeed!! 💜🤓👍 Also, they have a 300AH version for $1200/$1500… 🌈🤤💜
On Amazon for the same brand battery, they have other empires listed and I also have them listed in a smart battery as they call it. It says it’s supports low temperature charging down to -34 ,if I’m reading it correctly.
Have built two CALB LiFePo4 power generators (each 12V 100ah capacity). Each of them were more expensive if you hook them up to a good quality bms (overkill is what I used). The busbars ($35), cells ($300 off of ebay seller), and bms ($125) cost over $460 combined, all brand new components, so there is no way a quality DIY will beat $379! That said I'd highly doubt you can beat this ridiculously cheap battery, unless you buy grade B used cells. Thanks for another great video btw!
I checked out the Chins 300 ah battery and read, or I should say tried to read the reviews, but I clicked the filter "verified purchases" and out of the hundreds of reviews there was not one to read... *:-D*
Amazon is finally going after the sellers actively manipulating reviews. But they're useless anyway when most 5-star reviews of everything there say something like "Just arrived and it looks good to me!" That's why people like Will are so valuable to us.
I think you should do a step by step DIY build video for those of us that are on a tight budget. And leave recommended products used and where to get them. I am looking to build a 100 ah 24 volt and would like to know how to do it.
I've been waiting for this teardown. I'm interested in picking some of these up, but I wanted to see what was inside. Thanks for the review! Any concerns about putting multiple of these in parallel for a multi battery 12V system? I assume the BMS will keep everything in check. Looking at maybe 4 in a single bank.
This was incredibly helpful. I'm in the beginning stage of design for a stand-alone solar system for my RV (38 ft. pusher). I was already eye-humping these batteries and saw the Ampere Times were a touch cheaper. Good to know they're basically identical! Have many questions about other components... I will be doing a 24v system, curious about your thoughts on 24v inverter/charger combo (good idea, bad idea)? And why or why not 24v panels?
Yes, I also recently took apart both the ADCBATT 12v 100ah lifepo4 battery I purchased and the Ampere Times one, and I found that they are nearly the same construction and have the same writing on the cells, so I suspect they are both from some Chinese manufacturer. But their prices are different, Ampere Times battery is 350$, ADCBATT is only 300$, so is this a sales tactic used by the dealer?
Marketing, you gotta love it! I got two of those CHINS some times back, and the damn thing has not discharged in 4 months of none use. Still holding 12v+ each!
I love your videos, Will! You're very good at demystifying all of this. I'm very new to learning about solar for my travel trailer. These low priced batteries may allow me to get rid of my heavy golf cart batteries. Can you recommend a basic video that will help me understand what equipment I need to set up a low temp cutoff? Thanks!
It's probably the same company. Two "companies" = 2 listings for each battery = more potential sales? Person doesn't like company A and buys from company B thinking they're getting a different battery? Idk, just my thoughts. Also, agree on SOK - best I've seen thus far at the mid-range pricing.
We have to say one of the funniest disassemble of a battery we've seen you do. Incredable video angles and footage. We always love just how excited and informative you are with content. We enjoy your positive humor and vibe! Thank you. ~Mark & Teresa
Hey Will! Amazon sells the "smart" version of this battery as well for about $180 more. From what I can ascertain, the smart versions have a cold temperature sensor and a heating element to warm up the cells to charge them safely when the exterior temp is all the way down to -30°F. Is that something worthwhile to have if you live in a cold(er) area or would it be better just to use the temperature sensor in the Victron MPPT? We live in Maryland, so our winters aren't harsh harsh (it rarely gets below 10°F, but we have been camping late(r) in the fall when it dips below freezing overnight. Originally I was going to get (2) 206AH SOK batteries, but they're hard to come by. I was thinking about pivoting to these.
Good to see you've updated the price, I bought one when the price went up to $345, then two weeks later I bought another one when the price went up to $365. I wish I had bought two when the price was $329 ! Still cheaper than Battle Born though.....
I love the time lapsed comments, crunch, "I work out", Buzzz, Bang bang bang, "holly crap' "Uh oh", gasp,"I just melted it!" You make the most thorough reviews on the internet.
Good to see the quality level of cheap lithium pre made batteries is stepping up. i see a lot of vanlife people getting into lithium and buying cheap batteries so hopefully less and less people end up with duds in time as the newbies don't understand this stuff and its easy for them to get caught out. so many see youtube vids or cheap batteries pulling full capacity but don't understand thats only half the story and go ahead and buy an unsafe of badly made battery as they think its fine.
Thanks so much for doing this video will. I recently purchased a couple of CHINS 200ah batteries and was very pleased by the results of your break down. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with beginners like myself
I saw your video about the water tank heater and I'm gonna use it to keep batteries warm along with my diesel heater running during Pennsylvania winters
Just got my 2 12V 200aH Chins LifePo4 batteries. A surprise is the Low temperature heating function the batteries come with an internal heating plate which will maintain 10°C
There are plenty of situations lead acid don't cut it. Such as in winter temps. In real world you're lucky if you get 40% of your rated capacity when freezing. I had 235ah @50% available, I was using about 35ah running my furnace overnight after charging, in the morning I'd be at 12.0 volts or less, just 10 hours. You get over 95% available power with lifepo4. Sure it's a waste if you don't need it, not so much when you do. I now have 1200ah via 6 200ah lifepo4, I can pretty much run anything I want now without worry.
One review on Amazon says the company doesn't use the low temp sensor because it also prevents low temp discharge. I guess the BMS doesn't have a separate circuit to control charge independently of discharge so they just disable the low temp cutoff completely.
Hello , I have watched many of your videos , I thought I have learnt something from you, but in reality when now I am in my Cabin in Norway, I have no idea what I should get, I need to power my PC, cell phones cameras and a small ,12v fridge, could you please make list what ii should buy which is or are available At Amazon, I will make videos thank you for your easy to understand instruction and wonderful help.!
Mate my system does all that and I have 16 100 ah batteries 3000 watts of second hand panels 3 cheap chargers and a 1500 watt inverter and it runs power tools everything I need it's that simple I just use a generator for the welder it's easy don't be afraid good luck
@@MudPeppers Preditor on Harbor freight is a pretty good model and it has a silencer switch to quieter run time....some of those generators DB levels can drive you bonkers.
I have a similar setup. 12V fridges range from 60-90W. So this will run 24 hour a day. The other stuff you listed will be taken care by the excess solar during the day. If it's a PC then you will need more. Labtop is better. Inverter depends on your requirements 1500W, 300-400AH in batteries (lithium), 60-80A solar charge controller and about 1200W in panels. Why not a propane fridge, the system could be a lot smaller. You need to figure out total watt usage in day. Then size the battery a bit bigger (1.5x). Then estimate the panels, by assuming you get like 3 hours of sun a day. 300-400ah 12V, you will need 1000-1400W in solar panels. 24V system would be better. Beefy for 12V and only because of the fridge. So based on what you said:. 400W inverter, worst case for fridge = 90wx24h = 2160 wh. So get 3x100AH or 1x300Ah lithium. Cheap 100A Mppt charge controller (OOYCYOO). 3x 340W solar panels (3P config). Get a 6way 12V fuse block. Add RV lights, water pumps....
Lithium batteries are getting cheaper and people will "still" complain about high prices. I have Battle Born, KiloVault, DeWalt, Kobalt, and Dakota Lithium batteries...they are all working excellent. I am just curious about longevity with these cheaper Amazon ones. LOVE how their prices are going down tho.
Great Stuff Will - the reason they only use a high temp sensor and no low temp sensor is because the high temp will prevent a run away and fire so its a liability thing. A low temp sensor only shortens the battery's life! Stay Safe - Mike
Low temp charging protection seems like a fairly easy thing to implement for a medium to large bank of batteries, you aren't likely to get localized cold spots.

Great review of a product I've been eyeing. Any chance you can give feedback on how rugged it would be for an RV or Travel Trailer? Thanks Will, your vids are the best!
@@ImACarbonCopy uh, yes I did "watch Will", and I still didn't see that the internal cells were in any way vibration isolated/padded/or bound in a way that might or might not lead to vibration damage. So, to be clear, just because it's in a plastic welded box and has a few small square pads of foam, doesn't mean it won't break down from vibrations from driving on dirt roads.
@@Ender3Me No, you need to have a charging system compatible with Lithium batteries, in my experience with my Scamps, many older chargers will NOT properly charge lithium. Will has many videos on the topic and has a great book in how to build/upgrade an RV's electrical system for lithium batteries.

As a general contractor, I love our oscillating saws. With that said, you need either the somewhat newer dewalt 4-1/2” circular saw and set the blade depth very shallow to cut the batter cases. The second option, and possibly better, would be a dremel circular saw attachment. These sure would make your tear down process faster, easier, and likely even safer.

You are helping us build our off grid solar system. Awesome. The joy you share with the smarts and curiosity. LOVE the deconstruction!
The principle sounds good. Sure beats having heating pad depleted batteries when it's still too cold to charge.
@P A $659.99 for the 100ah. It also has the Bluetooth connection for monitoring. I think you were looking at the 200ah for $1199.

But these videos blow away those reviews (legit or not) since you actually show us the hardware and data points. I saw this battery and I assumed those reviews were bought and paid for and the battery was junk. So your review here shows I was wrong. Kind of like the renogy which you've shown is junk.
Amazon is starting to go after the sellers who actively manipulate reviews but I still wouldn't trust them.

Also, they have a 300AH version for $1200/$1500… 🌈🤤💜
This kid's really smart I like watching his videos some people are just genius at what they do.

What are empires?

Import restrictions are why, different name can sell more n flood market. Most China products are like that only one manufacturer 12 different names.

Yes! Undervalued comment in the video and in the comments! +1 to your comment!
Consider charging them. 12v is very low state of charge for this battery.
Thanks!
Buy a victron solar controller they and add a temp sensor.
It's probably the same company. Two "companies" = 2 listings for each battery = more potential sales? Person doesn't like company A and buys from company B thinking they're getting a different battery? Idk, just my thoughts. Also, agree on SOK - best I've seen thus far at the mid-range pricing.

You are really amazing..You are so knowledgeable about all this stuff. I really enjoy following and learning from you. Thank you so much. Outstanding job!!!
Great review of a product I've been eyeing. Any chance you can give feedback on how rugged it would be for an RV or Travel Trailer? Thanks Will, your vids are the best!
I'm restoring a fiberglass egg trailer, do i just swap this battery with my old AGM and it'll recharge and do everything the same?
uh didnt you watch Will cut that thing apart. That thing is rugged
@@berthaduniverse I'm sorry Paul. You are right.
