    Mike, I saw something on another channel you also might be interested in building - a log ramp with a deck. [Fall Line Ridge, March2019 ]. Having 3 or 4 logs sitting on a deck waiting to be milled with out having to start up the tractor and load each one individually would definitely save some time, especially in winter with limited day light hours after work .... Or, more in tune with the new season, imagine your sawmill sitting ideally under a large shed [convince your wife the shed is a test run for the gazebo your going to build her], its a rainy but warm Sunday morning with 3 logs sitting on the deck ready to go - no wet, no mud, no smell of diesel - just you, your sawmill, and freshly milled wood .... I know I'm definitely going to be building one soon.

    Pine is great to use even green. Not much strinkage. Harley any twisting. We use popular and gum for siding and 1by material for roof slats. I'll get some pics together for you to see all the buildings I've build here on the farm.

    Looking forward to the shed build. WE use red pine and actually skip the pre-drilling and screwing and just using framing nails. Especially for the 2x10s that will be supporting the rafters, nails would have much stronger shear strength. We have also framed a shed with green poplar, right off the mill. That was 25 years ago and the shed it still standing solid. With the poplar, you just have to make sure that it is kept out of the elements. Have a day! ;)

      Good advise and also, red pine has nowhere the strength that spruce or even white pine has. Not too sure of potential snow loads in Pa. However here in eastern Ontario, my header and rafter choice would have been some of that Norway Spruce you have there.
      Good Luck on your build

    If you had 1 more saw horse - then you could saw between horses and still hold a board but the cutoff would float. 4 gets out of hand but could be best. Always more. I have 2 sets of plastic and 1 killer set of steel. When not in use, they are tables. Plyboard (painted) lay on top. Handy and ready (almost) to go.

    One of the big differences with green lumber is that when it shrinks (mainly in width, not length), it puts a death grip on the fasteners used.....which is great unless you need to pull them out later. When we do metal ag roofing we use green white oak purlins. Nothing gets those nails or screws out once the oak dries.

All barns when where orginally built, where built with green lumber. Thats how a person could drive a 20 penny nail in without splitting the end

    A friend of mine has a house in Connecticut that was built in 1740. All of the wood in the house came from the land they owned. It is the way things were done before there were stores where you could purchase what you needed. Having that sawmill and a forrest allows you to return to the old ways of harvesting lumber, albeit with tools that make the work a lot more pleasant than it would have been in 1740. btw, that 1740 house has a fireplace big enough to walk into, and all the wood for the fire came from the land. So there you have it........sustainable.

      I wasn't sure about it but so far it's working out well. Several years ago I asked a guy I know (he owns a big mill and operation) he said red pine isn't worth fooling with but never gave me an answer why. Then I talked to others and they use it all the time. I think the first guy just told me that because he thought I wanted him to saw me a bunch and didn't want to mess with it lol

  • @GaryGreenway
    @GaryGreenway 5 лет назад +1

    No need to pre-drill green pine. (Unless you're going to go back and tighten every joint) Just start the screws where you want them then put up the board. At this moisture level, the wood fibers are very pliable and just compress around the screw. I would avoid nails because your wood will shrink and they will loosen.
