I do the post the same way. I haven't added water to concrete for setting post for years. There is a enough moisture in the soil in my area. Enjoying the videos on the sawmill and starting the shed.
Mike I thought I was only person lucky enough to find hidden "treasure" like that. This vid reminds me of too very important tips I learned from my father. 1) NEVER bury anything today you don't want to dig up tomorrow because YOU will. 2) IF you are going to be DUMB you have to be TOUGH and you will be too old to be TOUGH! I AM TOO OLD NOW but still not smart enough to not try! I ENJOY your site and look forward to watching them EVERY morning with a cup of coffee.

Someone from youtube put a shingles vaccine ad in right after Mike stuck the post hole auger in the buried package of shingles. Intentional? Maybe not, but quite punny just the same. 👍

Put the shingles out on the trail for the tractor to drive over. Helps keep soil dry and if under rock keeps rock from diving to the underworld! We have found them in the yard covered up since an old farm house was taken down.

I've made soil concrete with Georgia red clay and Portland cement. I did, however, add water as our clay is not as permeable as your fill and it would take forever for the mixture to get enough water to cure. There's no telling what you'll find in fill on a construction site, so your shingles are no surprise, just a hitch in your giddy-up. Thanks for another great episode.
You will enjoy making maple syrup, it brings the family together creating awesome memories! Using propane for the entire process will get expensive... build a wood fired boiler. It will speed everything up then use propane for the final boil.
Great channel!!! I built a similar 8’x24’ wood shed about 10 years ago. Placed it on 4”x4” skids in case I wanted to move it someday. Still sits in the same place.
Watched a guy building a large steel barn. When he had the vertical parts of the frame in place and braced, he just dropped whole bags of concrete in the holes and didn't bother to bust the bags open. Those bags drew enough water from the soil to set perfectly and that is a stout barn.

Shows how warm this winter has been. If the ground was frozen those may have been brittle enough to just break up. Another great video.
Anyone else would have left them in the ground and relocated the Post location but NOT Mike Morgan. Because Mike is an “Outdoors” person and NOT the type of person that would let these sit in the ground forever. Great 👍 job, Mike! 👍👍👍

I usually just use a layer of crushed limestone in bottom of hole and fill rest of the way up with the same limestone mix. Cheaper too!
Our family has done and sold maple syrup for 5 years a couple of tips are boil it in a thin pan not to thin to burn it and just drip it in the pan to evaporate it, I also recommend buying a hydrometer to test it to see if it’s done. Plus use a filter from a maple supplier

Well Mike I can feel your pain. Purchased my house going on 21 years ago from a younger couple and he was a contractor. At the time my 2 acre yard looked great with some added fields and woods. Found out that he apparently brought his work home with him. The yard was filled. Every spring to this day is a new adventure to see what is going to come up through the grass. Just a few things have been pieces of gutter and siding and the occasional 5 gal pale full of construction debris. Lots of roofing. Aluminum and electrical boxes Etc. My two favorites are get this.A complete console television I found while mowing. Seen a glare of what thought was a piece glass in the grass. It was the picture tube coming out. Also found a complete 70's vintage Honda motorcycle half buried nose down just in side my field line in some heavy cover. Cant wait to see what this year brings. This guy was an idiot.

I April fooled one of my work colleagues. He had a rain gauge he was so proud of, he checked it every morning and would give me a detailed account of how much or how little rain we had over the last 24 hours.
So one April fools I got there early and filled it with bunch of small toy cats and dogs.
I hope you have the same saying over there, that it rained cats and dogs or this won't make any sense!!

i put up signs for thirty five years dry concrete sets up fine. they even sell a product called post set concrete which is intended to be used dry.
Hey Joseph, I put signs up too. I use dry cement. If people don't think dry concrete will set up leave a bag outside don't take long to set. You ever try that expanding foam for post setting?
@@panhandleprepper6510 no my sign career ended 20 yrs ago we only used concrete or back fill but i imagine expanding foam would work on temp. signs
I've built many pole sheds and I always put the four corners in first as they are usually the only ones that cant be moved. Love the vids.
That’s crazy funny after the fact. But is very frustrating in the moment. At the house I grew up in you literally could not dig 2-4 foot down in the yard without hitting brick. The yard was a 1/4 acre in a neighborhood. Everywhere you dug to build a garden or flower beds you would hit bricks. We had piles and piles of bricks behind our shed that we dug up. My mom didn’t build the house so we don’t know the history of the land. But this reminded me of the childhood horrors of trying to build gardens and landscaping at my childhood home. We eventually just decided to build raised beds and go that route.
I grew up in NH and my Dad and I boiled sap for syrup in my Mom's kitchen. We used the Glenwood stove (gas and wood circa 1940's) and made about 3 gallons of nice grade A syrup. Collateral damage was there was so much moisture that the kitchen wallpaper peeled right off the walls! Oh well. Mom was livid but Dad and I had a great time!

Torch it Mike, just to soften, not burn..... I used one of those 4ft propane torches when I was drilling and hit asphalt. It softened up. The auger went right thru.

We make hero’s with the leftover meatloaf smothered with gravy and they are delicious!
We cut it up for "square meatballs" with spaghetti. Yum!

Hey Mike you should try stopping the auger when you get to the bottom of the hole and lifting it out with the auger off and it will leave you a cleaner hole
Fill your post holes with gravel. The posts will always be tight due to settlement. Posts with concrete just makes bigger posts. If it ever gets loose it will always be loose . Another benefit is the gravel is cheaper with concrete

Building a Shingle Shack With Mike. Many yrs ago i dug up a complete Aluminum Screen door putting a garden in. Dont know how it got their. The land used to be a dairy farm. We dug up a lot of bones along the creek bank on the property

@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans. It was interesting I remember finding a complete leg bone and a full rib cage from a cow. Rain would wash out the creek bank and they would show up thats when we found out it was a farm named Murdoch Farms
Greetings from No. VT - On the height question you brought up, I would recommend going to the highest level you can. That gives you clearance on your motorized equipment to be able to move materials or attachments in and out a lot easier.
Hey Mike! I am enjoying your project and I have a wood shed planed for this spring after the ground thaws out. My problem with digging holes is rocks, lots of rocks. My place is on top of a glacial moraine so I have these what look like river rocks potato sized and larger everywhere specially where I need a hole.
I was drilling with my ice auger for our boys fort and pulled up an Indian hatchet head. We live in northern Indiana and around where Indians use to live,supposedly. Was quite happy.
Make sure you get the drying sheds framed up I soon has you can because they 4x4 post are bad about getting warped when they dry out

Mike, you set post the same way I do. Interesting story about how I learned to do that. I was setting post for a fence the usual way by mixing the cement with water and pouring it around the post. My neighbor was watching me the whole time. When I got done he said, "You know all you had to do was put a little water in those holes and dump the bag of cement around the post (soil get dryer down here)." I ask him why he didn't tell me that when I started. He said, "You won 't forget next time." I didn't.

Better than hitting a very large rock! I hit two putting in my fence last summer! Always a fun time trying to get those to the surface!

we were putting in pilings for a deck when we hit a rock about 14 inches down. we poured the footing on the rock. moved out about 6 feet to put another pile and hit the same rock. really unusual for this area. I knew a guy who had an old Cat that had so many problems and he hated it so much that he took a trackhoe and made a big hole and pushed the old cat in. 20 years later someone drilled a hole for a new shed and drilled into the cat about 6 feet down.
it would make a good advert for shingles on longevity I feel for you I do been digging clay and concrete out of holes by hand

I thought you were going to hit a small underground stream😃. We can't use that type of post hole digger. It would bust the shear pins. At 12" below the surface I have granite. When I built my house the foundation contractor had to change from a 420E to a 520E backhoe just to get an additional 6" deeper. We ended up raising the the house a foot. Glad you were able to set the post and not move it.

Reminds me of the early 80s building a deck.. filled the holes with cement, by the time I got to the last post the cement had disappeared from the first hole. House was built on a land fill, the owner informed me later..
I've coated the posts with truck bed liner. Two coats and let it get dry.... Before that I soaked the bottom two feet in a barrel with used oil, mineral oil and diesel fuel... then bedliner....
Mike I remember building some fence for a man that i did work for quite often and I ask him anything we could hit with the digger and said no . We were going to set three posts and he decided we needed four !!! Against my wishes
We boered four holes and the fourth hole we cut his line going to his septic tank and had to spend the rest of the day repairing it and digging it out enough to set the post off to the side of it .
I guess what I'm saying is thank god you didn't hit anything that you had to fix.

Mike, years ago we put in a split rail fence, 10’ sections. I managed to hit the water line from the spring on the last hole, with my wife waiting to go out to dinner. Had to run to get a couple of fittings to splice the pipe in a by then very wet hole. Seemed like a one in twenty chance to me. Loving outdoors with e Morgan’s, here in Plainfield, N.H

Seeing you hit those shingles, reminds me of when I decided to replace a planter in my front yard with grass. The planter was on a mound..... of shingles..... from the previous owner! Needless to say I wasn’t happy! Took quite a bit of work to get those out of there!

This may sound silly but if I'm poking holes in the ground for anything I normally try to get them all done before I start setting posts. We have a lot of rocks where i'm at..........
I north east Texas you have to dig the mud off the auger
WE USE THIS METHOD FOR FENCE POSTS HERE TOO . ALSO LAYING FLAGS/ PAVING STONES A DRY MIX OF SHARP SAND AND CEMENT
When you set a post put in a couple inches of dirt before the cement. If cement gets under the post then it forms a cup. The post wicks water which ends up in the cup and rots your post. A couple of inches of dirt allows the water to flow by the cement and keep the post dry.
I've been making maple syrup since 1991 - it's my favorite hobby next to woodworking. 177 taps is the most I've done.

@@OutdoorsWithTheMorgans there are a couple of different Amish guys here in NE Ohio who build really nice evaporators if he ever wants to really get into it and upgrade to a real evaporator. It wouldn't be too far of a drive for you!

I never add water unless it's a very dry season in New England. If I do add water it's only a quart per post hole. Never had a problem. 👍

Perfect example - If you ever had a extra bag of ready mix sitting around and it turns hard. Also, Just wondering if dry mix 1 part mortar/ 2 part sand / 3 part gravel in hole dry if it too would harden up like ready mix
Been there done that! Recently had to drill some holes and found a stump about a foot down that I surely don’t remember! Slowed me down by a lot more than 30 minutes though..

Our family has been sugaring for 30 years now. It's my fault, when I was a kid, I wanted to try it - we started with 4 trees, now we're up to about 250-300 taps. Still pretty small, but it keeps us busy. If you get into it, you will love it, it's very addictive!

Also, it might be a little bit of a haul for you guys, but the St Albans, VT maple festival at the end of April is a really neat thing to go to. A few sticks of dynamite might solve the shingle problem. The hole might be a bit bigger than you wanted and your neighbours might complain of shredded shingle bits raining down, but dynamite can solve a lot of problems :-)
