I live in the land of "Potato Rocks" a.k.a. Rhode Island. I've killed gas-powered augers trying to dig holes. We've resigned ourselves to using a 60lb digging bar and a long-handled shovel.
I saw that they are making a big one that you stand up with. If that thing really works, it would be amazing fot big shrubs and even full size fence posts.
@HomesliceDrummer This is what i was about to add. Been using this for years to plant St. Augustine plugs. Maybe its more of a lawn care thing and the gardeners miss it due to RUclips's algo. Although the shovel portion did look liked it helped throw the dirt out of the hole a bit better, but I enjoy the power of an actual drill instead of the little 12v this one has.
I like the design and I can see the usefulness of a small auger. However, I can get an auger bit for my 20v drill for much less. I don't want a singular tool that uses a proprietary battery platform. I can get a bit for my 20v drill and have more power and extra batteries that I can swap out when my battery runs out of juice.
I have been using one of those bits for awhile now they are great .. only a sucker would buy a tool like the one in the video ... anyone with some knowledge would go to a home improvement store and buy one like you said .. they are great bits .. I dug a egress for the basement window 5 ft deep 6 wide and 7 long the first day made it no where second day I used that bit and my drill .. it was done the second day .. very useful tool
I agree 100% with the 20 volt drill & lesser expensive auger idea. However little old ladies might not think that way & just opt for the roto-shovel for simplicity.
@@Bob.Jenkins why wouldn't it be a good idea I set my torque and hit the ground giving it more as needed. You even said it your self .. if a person has a drill of any type they should all know to adjust the torque before using it .. or just get a impact witch will clutch out when twisting...
I just used an auger bit in a drill to plant 100 Norway spruce seedlings. The soil was clay. The bit would grab and drill in from time to time and the bit would stop spinning, so the drill would suddenly start to try to spin and almost broke my wrist a few times. This thing seems to have an auto shut off to stop things like that from happening. I'd definitely give this a try rather than use the auger in a drill.
I could see them coming out with a beefier version with a handle for standing up. I have back problems that limit how much digging I can do in a day and I love flower gardening.. This looks great for me. Thanks!
You can buy an auger bit that will fit any drill for $10 any any hardware store or amazon. Your drill is probably more powerful than this thing and it's way easier to hold on to with it's L shaped handle. The only thing you are missing is that stupid shovel piece that doesn't seem to be doing anything. At first I thought it helped stabilize the bit when you start the hole, but it didn't seem to do much of anything. Most auger bits you buy have the end of the bit stick out a few inches past the blades at the end so you can center your hole and stabilize the bit while digging.
Looks like a pretty good tool. I prefer the power planter line and my dewalt drill. I already owned the drill and the power planter is very heavy duty. Thanks
Try this anywhere in the Pacific Northwest especially Washington you'll hit a rock 3 in into the ground that you aren't going to get out for another week. And did I mention that there's several more of those just lurking beneath the surface.
I don’t understand the difference between this and my $15 3” 2-foot auger drill bit that I just attach to my power drill. The shovel obviously isn’t included in my setup but the auger does all the work. Planted all of my annuals this year with the drill & auger bit and did the exact same thing essentially...
great video, however the tool would be better served by having a SDS chuck or keyed chuck & not that cheap looking hand tighten chuck that after a bit of use will more than likely be impossible to loosen or tighten at some point. otherwise the tool seems great for the green thumb types.

Looks pretty good for soft soils. For the soil type in my area, hardpan with rocks and boulders, a jackhammer is needed. Maybe use the auger with a Milwaukee Hole Hawg,
Looks cool, it would be cooler if it accepted other 18v drill battery brands, and if it had a longer handle attachment so you didn’t have to stoop over to drill.
I bought a 4”x25” long spiral Auger for my 18V DEWALT drill for $33 bucks off Amazon. Used it to dig holes in my medium hard clay yard, and works great for me. I can’t imagine this small 12 volt setup would be any better. I would just use a hand trowel for this soft soil in this video.

I have something similar. It's a auger that attaches to a drill. It doesn't have the shovel attachment to it but it works similar. I've been using it on and off for a year now and it works great. I definitely would consider buying one of these.
Those augers can be useful. The shield on the side of this makes this really effective. It bits into the soil as it digs. I was also surprised that the tool being straight is easier for tis. You don't lose control of it and you can use two hands.
Glad you got some use out of that. I have to say I REALLY like the auger bit fit for my Milwaukee Hole Hawg. Plus the kickback protection and 90 degree angle helps. It's beefy, but super powerful.
I own one and you couldn't pry it away from me. I have a lot of long rectangular planters lining my retainer wall, and I re-use the potting soil every year, just adding nutrients. This tool grinds down the old soil, taking out any lumps and makes it like a fine sand, so easy to plant. It saves me tons of time and effort and I'm thrilled at the results, makes it easy adding fertilizer and mixing peat moss, etc. I see they just came out with a larger version. Now, I haven't had it that long, but so far, so good, no malfunctions and does what it advertises to do. You can't ask for more than that. You can also buy additional batteries on their website, so yeah, for me, and my needs, it's perfect. It's also a very substantial tool.
There’s systems that use a pressure washer to cut into the ground, and a suction point to suck out the mud. Forgot what it’s called. Might not work as planned considering the fissures I heard about in NC.
Sometimes low tech is not a bad thing! But I have to admit after using this I would have planted more bulbs and day lillies with it than I did by hand. I just ran out of steam.
I used a similar device about 30 years ago to plant daffodils along a motorway grass margin. Its called an auger drill, they have existed for centuries, nothing new, the fact that it now has an electrical drive mechanism does not set it apart as a new invention.
The only reason this would be nicer to have than just the auger bit on a regular drill is the fact it can go deeper than it could with a regular drill so you could potentially dig post holes with it. If they had an extension handle for it, then boom.
I have a drill and bought an auger bit for 10 bucks. Does the same job just doesn't have the guard and it can do deeper holes since it has a longer shaft. You don't realize how handy one is until you have to own one
This is nice, but I wonder how this is different from the various auger drill bits that you can find on Amazon. I got several last year, attached to my Bosch drill and it made digging pretty easy. It also helped me dig bigger and deeper holes, depending on the auger drill bit size & length. And I have all the benefits of a regular drill - standard rechargeable battery, variable speed,
I'd love to see a side-to-side comparison with a regular cordless drill, using the same auger. (Or just this tool without the shovel attached.) The shovel seems to be the unique selling point of this product, so let's see exactly what improvement it adds. The price isn't bad for the full kit, but if you already have a cordless drill there does seem to be some duplication.
I think what you call a 'shovel' is intended as a shield, meant to catch/ deflect stones and also just dirt that the spindle throws in your face. You are afterall down on your knees when you use it. Why it does not have a shaft..?. idk....... odd..
Without the shovel blade, 100% of the torque produced by the tool will be applied to your wrist. That still appears to be a problem. Notice how the demonstrator feels the need to put his left hand on the body of the tool where no handle is provided. A pistol grip and/or left handle would have prevented this, but they used a straight handle like a manual screwdriver, which most American workers refuse to use. A good auger has speed control and only gently drops dirt at the edge of the hole. No "shield" necessary.
I'm not so sure about this. Is it a shovel or a planter? Whether my skepticism is warranted or not I didn't hear you mention the following design feature. While this looks pretty much like a 2" auger bit in a drill, if you are not mindful, this setup can snap your wrist. This device is cylindrical and at worst will just spin in your hand. A good safety feature. The shovel attachment is surely helpful breaking through things. I have no doubt it is a good flower planter and this seems to be what it is intended for anyway. One gripe: this and other tools use proprietary/non standard batteries. I hate this. I wish these one off tools would license another battery. The Rotoshovel looks like a Milwaukee battery. I wish it did, because I have plenty of these with more amp hours too.
@Christian Heller my guess as to why it isn't is 1) if it had a pistol grip like a drill it would then be a drill, and 2) by not being a drill it is different. They can market different. They can't market "look at us we're a new drill on the market", and 3) an auger in a drill can snap your wrist if you're not mindful of the torque. It's cylindrical body isn't likely to snap your wrist. If one wants a pistol grip then just buy an auger bit for the drill you likely already have.
It stops not so much about burning out the motor....it is to prevent injury to your hands, wrists and arms. Years ago I used a 1/2" drill with a hole saw to drill a 4" ruff in for a toilet. The drill did not have a slip chuck and I fractured small bones in my hand. The hole saw grabbed a nail and the drill and my hand/wrist kept spinning. You could break the soil with any slip chuck drill, auger bit with extensions then easily scoop out the dirt as well.
I thought the thumbnail said "never die again".....I was intrigued to see how this device would help me in COD/Real life so I clicked. Despite the disappointment - thanks for the info!
For years I used a special giant auger bit for cordless drills to plant plants. Had the idea to use it one day to loosen soil when I was digging holes for wooden posts. It worked beautifully. 😂
I wouldn’t be surprised to see Ryobi coming out with something like this to add to their eclectic 18v lineup. I’ve been using drill augers from Amazon, which seem to do about the same thing, but much cheaper. Use them with a beater Ryobi drill that I won’t lose sleep over if it burns out.
Great clip! Can you post an opinion answer how it works/behaves without the shovel attachment? I was just about to buy an auger for my hand drill so I am happy they work so well. - I wonder what does the patented "shovel" part of this device contribute to the process other making it look more like a shovel. Thank you.
My question is there any other device like this that is comparible? To spend as much on this where the garden auger attachment I can put on my drill is a steep price difference.
I have used stand along auger with a drill and I think part of the issue is that you need to squeeze the trigger and if it catches, its not good on your wrist. This solves all that and that shield is cutting part of the whole at the same time. Definitely a big improvement, but is it worth it? Really depends how much you will use it.
And have a bigger hole. The compacted soil around the plant is basically just putting it in a different 'pot'. The hole should be bigger to allow the plant to grow out into softer soil. These plants will be stunted and hard to keep watered with such a tight root ball.
My first thought when you pressed the button and saw how fast it turns was looks like a good way to get a broken wrist. That might be another reason the motor stops if it jams or get hard to dig soil
Precisely! I’m in Georgia where we have red clay. No one uses a shovel here unless it’s in a garden with lose soil. Shovels are for debris removal. Digging is done with a pick or maul. Might as well focus the marketing in other states
I used the Lowes Bulb Auger drill bit and my Ryobi Cordless drill....I drilled out 8 post holes for my fence with ease in red clay. Just take your time
@@unmanaged I use an auger every year in the spring to plant my veggie garden. And actually it will do the opposite of what you're saying. If you pull the auger out while it's spinning, it will pull the dirt out and fling it in all directions, I guess it can act as a shield if it's facing you. But maybe you can explain how to use that shovel thing since I never used an auger with that attachment.
Neat overall idea and concept, but the power unit looks to be rather wimpy. What they should do is make it a little bit more like a really HIGH quality cordless drill, like a Milwaukee, Makita, DeWalt, etc., and give it a more powerful brushless motor, a better, one-hand tighten, ratcheting chuck, a bigger, more powerful battery pack of at least 18-20 volts, and also give it at least 2 speeds, higher for softer, easier dirt, and a low speed with more torque for harder dirt with tough stuff mixed into it like roots, rocks, or clay, etc... Also an additional side handle for safely and comfortably handling it in low speed and tough soil without it ever twisting out of your grip.
20V-60V or more is common these days for battery-powered yard tools, even most drills are 20V+ these days, so I am skeptical about the quality and longevity of a tool designed around a 12V battery.
The idea is cool, maybe more then 12v is needed Looks like just a back breaker since it's not got a long extension for us 6ft tall people like the other auger bits they sell where you don't have to bend over as much. Try this is non-mulch soft soil is the real test
Wish I had this for when I planted my zoysia plugs. I had an auger for my power tool but it really wasn't strong nor have as long of a spiral plane as this does. Still uber specialized and surprised it didn't come with a Tbar handle to help stabilize as you down thrust. Cost is 😮 for this specialized of a tool. As always nice vid.
It would be broken within 10 minutes of use here in North East Pennsylvania. The ground here is way to hard and the rocks range from pebbles to boulders.
Not sure how the soil differs in the northeast vs. southeast PA, but we have two garden auger bits, one smaller one like this one and a larger one for gallon pots and they both cut through our rocky clay very well. I use a cheaper ryobi hammer drill with the side handle to help hold the sucker because those auger bits definitely want to fling you around if you hit a rock. They have saved us a ton of time with bulb planting. I'd suggest giving it a try with one of the cheaper auger bits on amazon if you're curious before investing in a purpose-made tool like this which i'm sure comes at a premium. Just go easy, because if you're wailing on the throttle when an auger hits a rock you're dislocating your shoulder. That's one positive of silver cymbal's reviewed product, the auto-stop sounds like a shoulder-saver.
I would just use a long auger bit to prevent strain on the back. A card board box of a 2 liter soda bottle cut in half could be used to contain the dirt while the hole is being dug.
That's a cool tool looks like it works better than I thought it would.. Be great for anybody that does landscaping in plants a lot of flowers and little bushes
Pretty sure you could just get a auger bit for any power drill and achieve the same results, in fact the shovel part does nothing for digging and mostly just shields the operator from some of the debris if anything at all. I would definitely not suggest this for cost reasons alone but also who wants an entire other power drill basically to do 1 specific operation compared to other ones designed for anything?

The price isn't bad for the full kit, but if you already have a cordless drill there does seem to be some duplication.
I have been using a 4inch auger in my 20v drill and it works great
I think what you call a 'shovel' is intended as a shield, meant to catch/ deflect stones and also just dirt that the spindle throws in your face.
That soil looks pretty lightbanc easy to dig, wonder how good it would be on my compacted silt
Looks Productive 👏
It stops not so much about burning out the motor....it is to prevent injury to your hands, wrists and arms. Years ago I used a 1/2" drill with a hole saw to drill a 4" ruff in for a toilet. The drill did not have a slip chuck and I fractured small bones in my hand. The hole saw grabbed a nail and the drill and my hand/wrist kept spinning. You could break the soil with any slip chuck drill, auger bit with extensions then easily scoop out the dirt as well.
That is a very good point. That totally makes sense. That is the issue with augers and cordless drills have crazy torque without any ability to stop.
I hope they sell only the attachment because I have already a drill and not very excited to get another similar one just for one function.
You can buy auger bits that are very similar at Home Depot or Amazon that you just put in your cordless drill.
Dis video just showed me what to do with an auger bit and a drill for planting tomatoes. Thanks..
Same thought. Maybe an Expand-It attachment?
Ryobi would make an 18v back scratcher if they thought people would buy it lol
Great clip!
Can you post an opinion answer how it works/behaves without the shovel attachment?
I was just about to buy an auger for my hand drill so I am happy they work so well.

I wonder what does the patented "shovel" part of this device contribute to the process other making it look more like a shovel.
Thank you.
If I had such a soft soil like this I would dig with my bare hands
Also a good feature that it stops so it doesn't snap your Wrist if it hits a rock or Root
Thank you for the quick response. I appreciate the time and effort you put into your product testing. It's definitely my go to for my home needs.
Good idea for us older guys who cannot shovel any more. I could use this while sitting.🦇
You should loosen the root ball apart before planting
And have a bigger hole. The compacted soil around the plant is basically just putting it in a different 'pot'. The hole should be bigger to allow the plant to grow out into softer soil. These plants will be stunted and hard to keep watered with such a tight root ball.
That thing is pretty darn cool. Saved to my list so I can order it later.
You are digging in mulch! 😂
Man, you have the coolest toys! I love it.
My first thought when you pressed the button and saw how fast it turns was looks like a good way to get a broken wrist. That might be another reason the motor stops if it jams or get hard to dig soil
If that survives an actual rocky area, then I'll be impressed
Looks nice! Any idea if it works on clay? It would have made planting my garden and marigolds easier if it does.
Has to be a sponsor, this was the lightest, loosest "dirt" I've ever seen
Lol you haven’t tried Texas soil yet, it’s know to be related with concrete
Just take your time
Oh...and I live in Houston TX!!!
"Charge up dem battries, Martha, the horse dun just up an' died."
plenty of drill auger attachments out their , most have a shovel that that replaces the drill handle and has a collar ring attachment
Even with a power tool doing the digging for you, those holes were pretty crooked !🤣
A pick and shovel can make those holes better 😏
I used bottom end of a ice auger in a drill for fence post holes worked great
I'd take off that shovel part, don't see it do anything other than inhibit the tool from going in that direction
The shovel part pushes the dirt out of the hole if you have ever used and auger it makes it easier to use
@@unmanaged 1:30 you can see what I mean, it's just a shield against flinging dirt at you, look at the spread of the dirt.
It needs to be a LOT longer. No way would my back put up with all of that bending!
Its meant to replace a gardening trowel not an actual full length shovel
I just have augers I can chuck into a cordless drill. They are nice for planting bulbs. Really nice.
Be cool if they made a trigger version, bigger battery with a extended shovel length to do standing up for larger plants.
People in 1921: I use muscles for everything.
People in 2021: I use batteries in everything, because my estrogen levels are off the charts.
It will be featured in the next installment of Pet Cemetery 🐈😻🐈⬛😺🐱
🤣
Can see this breaking my back
There is no torque on the Rotoshovel
i like it wish it had a longer shaft good vid
This looks cool
Awesome. Now I got this dirt everywhere in my mulch
It works like a regular auger bit. But the shovel keeps the user from getting sprayed with dirt, making it very user friendly.
I would just use a long auger bit to prevent strain on the back. A card board box of a 2 liter soda bottle cut in half could be used to contain the dirt while the hole is being dug.
I love ALL THIS STUFF! 💪
Oh hells yeah! I'm going to use this to dig for clams!
When I was a kid in the 1970s, we used a shovel - uphill, both ways.
It seems like it may actually require diggers hotline call as it’s not probably hand digging and would easily sever a fiber optic drop
That's a cool tool looks like it works better than I thought it would..
Be great for anybody that does landscaping in plants a lot of flowers and little bushes
Can you get the bit separately? The rest can be replaced with a drill
I use something similar with my 18-volt cordless drill so easy to dig holes, love it
Pretty sure you could just get a auger bit for any power drill and achieve the same results, in fact the shovel part does nothing for digging and mostly just shields the operator from some of the debris if anything at all. I would definitely not suggest this for cost reasons alone but also who wants an entire other power drill basically to do 1 specific operation compared to other ones designed for anything?
