They previewed the "1968" episode of "From the Earth To the Moom" for the press in 1998 at the Reuben H. Fleet Museum in San Diego's Balboa Park. I was fortunate to be invited. I sat in row directly in front of Wally Schirra and Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin (he was wearing a blue tie bedecked with stars and galaxies). In my work, I have met many, many celebrities in my career, but I was literally as giddy as a little boy next to these two pioneers. It's something I will never forget as long as I live.
As someone who was a teenager during the Apollo series and followed it closely, watching this puts a lump in my throat. This was such a proud period of our Nation's history, and though I am 58 years old now, I still look upon these men as heroes. This is going on my favorites list. Trekfan, well done!
I was an extra on the series while living in Orlando in 1996. While there I got to meet David Scott, the commander of Apollo 15, who was the technical advisor for the series.

Maybe his ways ended up costing his life, but he will be remembered by his achievements and by his character as a leader.
Watching it like this, the whole Apollo program serves as a tribute to president Kennedy and this speech. It’s also easy to understand what a leader’s rhetorical ability means to motivate people and make progress.
SgtBaker16 Yes I did. He loved coming to Oshkosh Wisconsin for the week long air show almost every year. I've met many Apollo Astronauts and Gene Krantz at Oshkosh. Cernan was a great guy. Loved aviation and getting people involved in flying.
I was 19 days old when Kennedy gave that speech and I grew up during the apollo/shuttle era and all I can say is, Man do I miss that time of my life ,it seemed like humans could do anything and America was still the shining light on the hill to be admired

This excellent drama documentary should be made compulsive viewing in all secondary schools to show what ordinary men and women can achieve in their lives and to inspire others to reach for the stars. I
While I do admit that it’s very jarring to go from the previous episode to the next regarding its lighthearted humor and attitude I for one find it very important that they showed that these astronauts while being serious on the job also knew how to have a good time and as events played out in real life there was the shit dropped over COM’s when they cut off there engine a little too soon when landing and I find that absolutely hysterical that these individuals who are literally on the surface of the moon test with one job and will be on a select list of very few individuals that will get this accomplished dropped the S bomb upon landing LOL

I love this miniseries, it was so well done. Everything in the world changed when the space age began in 1957. In the 1950s and 1960s they could never have imagined in their or their children's lifetime. That every other year launches into space would be made and humans would be long term living in space. The 21st century will see humans on Mars and beyond into the far reaches of the solar system etc.
Thanks for posting this compilation of clips from the series. It's really one of my favorite. The only thing I missed hearing was the middle part of JFK speech you included, after he says "We choose to go to moon..."Because that challenge will serve to organize and measure the best of our energies and skills"... I always thought that was the best part. But your video is great. Thanks again for posting!

This gives me goose bumbs every time I listen to this score and other scores from the Soundtrack. This was one of the most proudest moments into the history of Not only the United States But to the entire Humanity when we all as one conquered the Moon in its name ,. I hope we can leave political garbage so that we as one can become with the stars and colonize as what it was really its real intention. One Humanity.
I find it amazing how short sighted humans can be. We have the technology to start the colonization of space or at least put money into the research to find out solutions to some of the problems we face. But apparently some people don't find long term survival of our species isn't a noble goal to some.
I grew up during Mercury, Gemini and Apollo. All those names, they weren't Shepard, Grissom, Armstrong, et al, they were "Al, Gus, Neil, Mike, Buzz, Jim, Frank, Dave, Gene, etc." and now, so many of them, gone. Ad Astra, gentlemen.

I have given quite a lot of thought to why still so many believe this never happened.. I guess it’s because they just don’t understand it was possible at that time and I have to say that it certainly was an unbelievable achievement from a technical standpoint.. if that was the only part I had to consider I would probably have doubted as well. But.. Going to the moon has been an unachievable dream for humans as long as we have had the knowledge about what it is. Probably thousands of years at least. When you achieve such a dream you actually want to achieve it. The political propaganda is one thing and I get that part. But to me that’s the ONLY reason to fake it. And what for? To show the world that USA is superior? Well.. I guess that’s a somewhat valid reason but would it really be worth to spend tens of billions of dollars on a fake that really wouldn’t lead you anywhere? To me there are also a number of other reasons that speaks for itself from a human standpoint: - The Russians have always accepted this as a success. Do you honestly believe that in those years (during the Cold War) there wouldn’t have been a single Russian spy or Russians scientist who would have been able to reveal such a fake? - It’s also very unlikely that all NASA staff would have hidden such a secret for decades. - From a scientific standpoint, to actually learn more about the moon in particular and space in general if you have tens of billions of dollars to spend. - And finally.. which to me sums it all up. The moon landings are probably the most symbolic technical achievement in human history. Something that could motivate hundreds of thousands of people to give their lives for a whole decade. A goal to strive for that had never been reached before.. To me, most of us live for that process (and especially in a situation like this) and the satisfaction from achieving what we have strived for. Not for telling others that we did something we never really did..
I hope one day these landing sights will be surrounded by the future version of a chain link fence and have a sign saying (for example) "Tranquility base National Park Site"... It would have signs explaining the history of each site and plug ins for air and power so visitors can stay as long as they like and not have to drain their suit air and power... Lastly a pressurized small building next to the landing site with an auditorium to show the history of spaceflight in general and project Apollo in particular. I would have an acre around each site declared sovereign American territory and if the UN doesn't like that they can kiss the US's backside....

Ironically, wars have usually improved technology. This (cold) war improved technology as well for the better but it was also required for the effort needed to make it happen. Today the funds and motivation to improve rapidly are not nearly as big and improvement takes much longer time (in this regard).

I liked Horner's score to Apollo 13. But, man oh man, did Kamen ever absolutely nail the wonder of the Apollo Program with this theme. Just great.
