I always thought it was really cool how King Ghidorah seems to be based on iconic legendary dragons from all over the world, from the dragons and wyverns of Western and Northern Europe, the Lernaean Hydra of Ancient Greece, Zmei Gorynich from Russian folklore, and of course, Yamata no Orochi and Japanese dragons!
I have always shared this fact around. But also, a golden Dragon may be a bit of a reference to China too. Godzilla is a nuclear terror made from an American nuke. Meanwhile China started it's nuclear program in 1957/58, and the first Chinese nuke was detonated in October of 1964. Ghidorah made his big screen debut in late December of 1964. Considering the movie was rushed into production to replace Red Beard in the holiday season, I would guess that fairly recent Chinese Nuke test, influenced the production too.

I remember watching MST3K and seeing the three headed Dragon in the intro of Mystery Science Theater and almost thought it was King Ghidorah!
As I was watching I felt like I had seen that film somewhere before, of course I was thinking of the MST3K episode 😅
