- Took this one for a test run after a basic tune up and making a custom propeller for it. I really like the booster port technology that this engine has. It starts and idles nice, yet gets up and goes when you want it to. I still have to get the RPM’s down another 2-300 with prop work, so it might even go a little faster when done. At this point it’s already faster than a 9.9 Evinrude that I have; which surprised me. Enjoy…

Sweet engine, man. I love those forged crank 2 stroke twins
Thanks, me too!
I bought a cherry, like new 1996 Starcraft Mariner 170 boat about 9 months ago. The old guy whom I purchased the boat from, he bought the boat new and had it finished out to his specs, he still had the original build sheet. It barely looks like it was ever in the water and it sure was not stored outdoors. He was one of those old school guys who had nary a pin out of place at his house in Georgia. I had been looking for an aluminum hull vee-hull center console for a few months. When I saw this boat in person, I was beside myself how new it looked. It was so clean, I had no qualms giving him the price he was asking.
The man I bought the boat from, owned a storage and warehouse business and the boat was always stored in one of his large warehouses. He had not taken the boat out for the previous 6 years or longer. He had tears in his eyes when he signed over the title to me. He had me in his house for 2 hours and told me all about his life. He showed me around his house and the numerous trophy mounted bass he caught and the many trophies he won in bass fishing competitions. He asked me to come back and say hello and talk to him whenever I felt like it. I bought the boat on Thursday afternoon, he went to hospital the next day, Friday evening and died on Monday.
The boat has an 88 Johnson SPL as the main powerplant, a bow mounted MotorGuide 67 trolling motor and a matching 8.0 Johnson motor mounted on the port side of the transom. When I hooked up the 8.0 to fuel and started it for the first time in at least 6 years, the motor fired right up and purred without missing a beat. I was already in the thought process of giving it another pull, when I realized the 8.0 Johnson was running. It had the original spark plugs and the motor looked like it was brand new outside and under the cowling. It went in and out of neutral, forward and reverse and the throttle response was immediate and unhesitating.
I now have the boat inspection ready and then some. After 9 months of tweaking little things here or there on the trailer(new lights, tire, hubs, bearings, addition backing lights, spare tire and bow steps) and updating all the electronics/chart plotters, new vhf radio, new batteries and adding another battery to run the chart plotter, I am finally ready to take the boat out. I am older and hopefully wiser than my younger days, where today I try not to leave anything to chance.
Wow, what a score you made. So sad about the owner. I’m sure you will take care of his pride and joy.
I just got one of these for 300$ and looks to be in decent condition….
Nice to see a vid of it running I need to get a gas tank
Great deal! Be sure to service the water pump, before putting it to work.
Just got one today uk lovely engine
Congratulations. Enjoy!
I absolutely love boats and small horsepower engines like a 6 or 8hp is perfect for me to put on a 12 foot !!😊
I agree
Can't beat a good Evinrude or Johnson outboard
Easy to work on and run and run and run…
the 7.5 and 6hp are essentially the same... 3 small intake / exh ports from 1980-1988. The 8hp was a different animal entirely starting in 1986 with the 2 big exhaust ports, different exhaust, reed plate, tighter head and larger carb to keep up with the Japanese motors *prop rated.
Interesting. Thanks for the info. I wonder if the 6 and 8hp from 1989 up were the same except for carburetor size? A lengthy parts look up session would tell I guess.
@@GearHeadJP yea no problem. i remember hearing the same (incorrect) info you did about ports, but then i had an 8hp from around 87' on my bench and got a shock when i saw the ports! i kinda felt silly as the 8hp has a ton more power as you know, but most folks got talked into a 6hp. i believe the carb and exhaust is different, but blocks the same on 1992-up top mounted starter ones but yes, would need to compare parts. cheers,
Yep, these 8hps are amazing, and will keep right up with 9.9s for sure. Not a fan of the lousy design changes, prefer the older ones though. That goofy shifter is very sensitive, and that front mounted tiller is dumb as well. Plenty of CPS to break, the recoil housing is plastic as well. The one nice thing about these newer ones are the beefier rods... I have often wondered if the newer rods can be used on the older style powerheads, someday I will attempt that swap.
I’m definitely giving the newer style rods an endurance test. 😂
I was wondering where those revs were coming from bc I had the '93 version of this engine and it didn't rev like that. And then you said "custom prop". That splains it.
😂 yes, it made a world of difference.
When was the Booster Port added? I've been thinking about this '92 I saw.
I am not certain. You’d have to check parts lookups and see when the part number changed for the block.
I am looking to replace the prop on mine or get an extra anyways……. can you please explain the custom prop. I can only find one available prop with the pin type
I made the one on this engine from another brand engine. I had to modify the hub, and shape the blades the way I wanted.
Aye I'm just saying it as a joke btw lo e the vids
Haha, okay. Run em’ if yah got ‘em.
Hi mate what's the booster port you mentioned cheers wayne
Approximately 1/8” hole above the exhaust ports in the cylinder that goes towards the exhaust plate that allows a tighter combustion chamber with more compression at high engine speeds, but at slow engine speeds there’s enough time for compression to bleed out of the booster port which makes it idle nice. This assumption of design is strictly mine and extracted from my arse, but it’s the best I can figure. ;)
Cheers mate
@@GearHeadJP thats not a boost port. its a compression relief hole to aid in starting. You can epoxy behind the liner to block it off... makes it slightly snappier off the line.
Hi could you tell me fule mixture plz cheers
50:1
Can you still find parts for these
Sure, all the service parts are readily available.
what is the weight of the ship
I am not certain. Maybe 115lbs ?? It’s a 1983 Sea Nymph 12K. Maybe it can be looked up.
You sale this motor i buy let me know please, where u are thks
This one is not for sale.
