    Great machine. I may get one. I would re-tamp however. Those grounds on the side bother my OCD. It would take 2 sec. And I have a tamper, since it is 58mm. Otherwise I like it.

    This is the first breville machine of which I'd say it's beautiful. It's not that different from before but somthing about feels good, maybe the shinyness and big steam wand

    • @OtherSteve

      I agree. Between the metallic shininess, gorgeous screen, and carefully designed lighting, I truly think it is a beautiful appliance.

    If you check your firmware version are you on 2.4.3? and if you are, is your clock always 4 hours fast after a power on/off? Mine is, and it appears to be a bug that breville needs to address. Unclear if it effects anything as far as firmware updates go, but there is a 2.5.3 version out there for at least some machines.

    Congrats on your purchase. I currently have the barista express as well and basically parked it as I was always pulling awful shots lately. Looking to grab the Oracle jet as well. Great video!!

    • @OtherSteve

      Thanks dude. I clearly suck at this espresso stuff, but I feel like this machine is the perfect balance in that it provides the necessary training but also has plenty of opportunity for tinkering. I also really like some of the features that are absent in previous models such as the choice between volumetric and time-based brewing and the group head thermojet addition. I've still got a long way to go in terms of playing with it but so far I feel like it was worth the purchase!

    • @pmich
      @pmich 3 месяца назад +3

      @@OtherSteve I watched the entire video and you are definitely more knowledgeable than you take credit for. Starting with the express, we both had to learn the entire process! I'm looking forward to having the machine properly dial in the shot a lot better than I can. The volume based shot vs. time base is definitely a highlight of this machine.

    I bought one yesterday, waiting like a kid on Christmas Eve. Can you pull a regular shot of espresso (1.5oz) and report back how it came out?

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  2 месяца назад

      My regular shots have been fantastic. I have gravitated toward using the doubleshot basket along with Single+ as my shot size however. It's been really consistent.

  • @BlokeOzzie
    @BlokeOzzie 2 месяца назад +1

    Time vs volume is buried in the service menu of other Breville machines. My Oracle is still going strong after 2 years, but I do not use the autotamper, instead measuring my bean dose into the hopper and using a dosing cup to catch the output, then manually tamping. I get much better and consistent shots this way.

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  2 месяца назад

      My brother says the same. To be honest, I've been happy enough with the results from my Jet that I've just been letting it handle the particulars. It's really good!

  • @lovelymisshazel

    Are you able to make the machine retamp only? The sides are something that isn’t ideal and having the breville impress touch I usually do a double tamp because of a similar issue after the initial tamp.

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  3 месяца назад +1

      I don't believe so. But I usually just shake the portafilter for a moment and it smooths out to a pretty admirable looking surface 🤷‍♂️

    Really amazing and detailed review!
    I have one question, did you figure out if there is an option to deactivate the automatic tamping after grinding?
    That‘s what I really need because my wife doesn‘t want to tamp manually but I would. Because if it‘s not possible I would go with the touch impress and save some bucks as well.
    Thanks

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  2 месяца назад

      I don't *think* it's possible. But I have to ask: why not simply retamp after the initial machine tamp is completed?
      The tamps are pretty darn good by the way, provided you give the final loose grounds on top a little shake/tap once or twice after it's completed!
      Thanks for watching by the way, it means a lot! :-)

    • @imreallysureovereigh
      @imreallysureovereigh 2 месяца назад

      @@OtherStevethanks for your fast reply.
      In worst cases the direct tamping without distributing (wdt) results in a more compressed middle part of the coffee puck. Maybe it is not a problem at all and I also believe that the tamping of the machine is quite good but there is something satisfying about manual tamping.
      That‘s why I would like to have the opportunity to tamp it myself and the touch impress makes that possible. tamping after the automatic tamping is not an option for me.
      But thanks for your reply that just made my final decision :)

  • @GraysonCarr

    What’s the default shot volume or grams it was shooting for? Seemed like a lot and the last shot seemed too fast, but maybe that cup is smaller than it looks on video.

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  3 месяца назад

      I'm not sure -- I'm wondering if the setup procedure works differently than the normal operation or something... or maybe the firmware update that happened afterward had a hand in it. I can't really replicate it now that I've got it dialed in with these beans, but if it winds up pouring a ton more than I think it ought to yet again I'll report back about that.
      I think it's got to be volumetric in its approach because it seems pretty clear it's not time-based (plus, it's set that way apparently in the settings menu from the factory). But I can't figure out what it's shooting for, as you said yourself. Regardless, the barista guidance got me to the right spot in four shots (actually even the third was pretty good), so I guess that's not bad.

    How well does it do with Dark Roast Whole Beans? The beans I use are a little oily.

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  3 месяца назад

      So far I've only tried it with these locally roasted Sunergos beans, and they're not oily and also not particularly dark. I'll let you know when I swap them out if I get a different blend though. I have no reason to suspect it wouldn't produce even more consistent shots with darker beans, as (I believe?) that's usually the case.

    Seems like quite a big price gap between this and the touch impress, and not that many extra features

    • @OtherSteve
      @OtherSteve  3 месяца назад

      Yeah there's definitely a significant gap. But the addition of the second Thermojet at the group head, the cold brew and cold espresso options, The 58 mm portafilter, superior design (in my opinion), and improved touch screen are definitely worth a bit extra, depending on the user.
