Smart Home Light Switch - No Neutral, Because No Wiring!?

  • Broadlink just released a secret Smart Home protocol called Fastcon BLE and it solves EVERYTHING! It's local, it's private, it's mesh capable and it's super cheap
    This video is sponsored by Broadlink, all opinions are my own.
    Broadlink's new products adopt a new protocol called Fastcon BLE, which is based on Bluetooth but WAY more powerful. This has enabled them to make a smart home light switch that requires no neutral wire, and in fact no wiring whatsoever! It pairs directly to a smart bulb and so needs no Internet connection and no hub and despite all this is entirely local and completely private.
    The products themselves form a bluetooth mesh that gives the smart home unbelievable range, and these may just be the best smart home devices on the market

    **UPDATE*** Broadlink got delayed by amazon with the rollout for using the buttons to start Alexa routines, they coded up using a new API and Amazon have delayed the rollout. I didn't find out until after I'd released the video 🙄 they reckon July it will start working.

    Broadlink plan to localise the timers on the hub "very soon", and also have agreed that the buttons on the switch should have more flexibility for gestures such as hold, double click and even triple click! They are discussing this internally now.

Having said that, Paul, DOES IT WORK WITH HOME ASSISTANT? YOU DIDN’T MENTION HOME ASSISTANT. WE NEED HOME ASSISTANT ESPECIALLY IF THIS IS LOCAL. HOME ASSISTANT. HOME ASSISTANT. That may explain why there hasn't yet been an integration with BrightLink switches and home assistant. They might want to replace HA for basic users.

    • @wizdude
      @wizdude 2 года назад

      @@tsgeekk possibly. But they do offer integration with Alexa and Google Home. It wouldn’t have been hard to leave an open API on the hub and someone could have written some integration for it.

    • @tsgeekk
      @tsgeekk 2 года назад +1

      @@EricDeLaRosa I don't think they are trying to be a 100% replacement for Home Assistant. But there is a significant market out there that either doesn't use HA, or only uses it to do fairly basic stuff, because HA is deemed too hard to learn. I'm not getting into that argument. I love using HA BECAUSE I enjoy the tinkering involved. There's a massive market out there that would love to get 80% of HA's functionality, but don't want to commit the time it requires. BroadLlink may be trying to connect to that market.
      My concern as a HA guy is that I want to use BroadLlink products, but no integrations have been created beyond the BL remote. My speculation is that the lack of HA support may be a feature, not a bug. BL may never allow HA to integrate.

      @@You-Tuber2024 I didn't find this review to be entirely clear about its capabilities. Basically, Alexa can talk to the bridge (and activate scenes), but the bridge can't talk back.
      If you could use the buttons on the panel to trigger routines, this would be a MUST HAVE. Instead, you're stuck using Alexa to control their equipment, which doesn't have the range or quality of many other brands. Even their bulbs--which are fine--are inferior to Govee. I don't want to replace my current stuff with Broadlink stuff, just so I can use their panel. Oh well.

    Many things remind me of the nordic Plejd, very popular in Sweden at least. Altough that is more install focused so an electrician can install the dimmers and share it easely to the customer as they mainly do behind the wall dimmers. But timers and astro clocks etc are local on each device don't even need the hub for that. I use standard Schnider frames for my wireless button which is claimed 15 years batterylife....mine has been up for like a year and a half and the clockcell battery is still 3V+

    I may have missed something, but since these are running off BLE, then it seems like your phone acts as the hub when not using the hub or cant be reached and thus the distance between your phone and the nearest bulb in the mesh is the limiting factor. when you tested you said you couldn't get far enough away to stop the bulb from working. was your phone also a large distance from the bulb you were controlling? Looking promising. What's stopping me from taking the plunge is integrating into my current system. I like lights on after power restore. This is because I still have the existing switches in place. So this allows it to work like an existing light no matter what breaks. So maybe broadlink should allow users to choose this. Happy customers are good for broadlink right.

    1. Brillian reason to get the wife into a star-trek outfit. Well done. 2. I'd re-subscribe 1000000 times to never have the Kardashians on here again.

    Casambi also good BLE type mesh system although priced for professional use. Use of EnOcean switches are similar in operation but batteryless. Thread (and matter) will also compete so I wonder how yet another protocol will survive. Time will tell.

      @@paulhibbert FWIW, I use Casambi and HK products plus a couple from Shelly and Tuya with Hombridge managing non native HK devices (plugins) to connect them thru to Home App (Apple). Also find Homedash App useful as a good overall status and control manager. Dipping in out of native Apps as required (until matter arrives… if it ever does:-). )

    Yep, definitely not a replacement for Home Assistant Paul. I'm sure it will never support all my DIY devices. That being said, I totally just ordered the kit. As always, thanks for the awesome content.

    I also bought a single socket spacer from Amazon so that I could leave the existing switches in place and switched on, then screwed these switches in place over the existing. No wiring mods and done in two minutes...undoabke just as quick. Now waiting for the range extension to replace the unstable stuff I have!

      Shame. There's a big pro-local bias among home assistant users. They world make excellent bedfellows. They wouldn't need to do much. An mqtt integration or an open API for the hub would open the doors.
      Those switches look awesome and I'd definitely buy in if I could statefully control the devices through HA (HA could control Alexa, but it would be stateless)

    I like how they are implemented and the brightness they offer. What about the lowest dim setting? I have a hue ambience next to the bed for night light so I can see without waking Mrs G up. Happy to ditch hue and do a total revamp with something like this if I can have a few things like the low dim setting.

    The US has also had ramp brightness for years but they still haven't got around to enabling it elsewhere.

    A mesh with hundreds of devices is a very difficult task to solve, if you are a device engineer. Both the hardware and the software have their own particular problems for the mesh to work. Time to learn ESPNow. Dude, you are leading me to a higher standard every weekend. Thank you!
    Edit: the "Rules processor", or the device that manage which device triggers what, must live in the mesh. Interesting. It is possible to implement such "Rule processor" on ESPNow, with a distributed state machine. Quick, to the lab!

    Fantastic bit of kit that appears to be! Just the thing I needed for my little boys bedroom. Don't like the idea to give the 'little trouble maker' access to any of our home interfaces and in this case he would be perfect.
    Also I think I'd be speaking for a good majority of your followers if suggested that you have more of your beautiful wife in your videos 😍 maybe even getting her to do the zigbee or homeassistant thing!
    OK maybe not the last one 😂😂
    All the best 👍
