Beautiful painting! I am a British watercolourist, but I’ve lived in Colorado Springs for the past 21 years. The lack of humidity here really does make it hard to cope with watercolours just flash-drying on both the paper, and in your palette, so I generally keep a fine water mister on hand and carefully mist everything regularly to try and buy some extra time. Every time I go back to the UK to paint though, I have the opposite problem where everything takes forever to dry 🤣. I love painting outside, but studio work is definitely easier! My daughter is also a watercolour artist and also a RUclipsr (HulloAlice). I am loving your videos and so glad I found them, you got another subscriber 😁
Well hello, neighbor. I live near Denver. I think one of the biggest challenges I find I encounter with plein air painting is the constantly shifting light. Shadows start on one point of my painting but eventually end up on another end as time passes. Taking a reference photo helps, I think. Cloudy days make this worse. i experienced that one time when I worked on a piece up at Dream Lake in Rocky Mountain National Park. There were lots of swift-moving clouds that continually made colors and shadows shift. I think you did it right on a nice sunny day!
What the heck......this is just so gorgeous to paint from...whoa. You have it all. Love the scenery. Yes yes to more outdoor painting. Yes. I'm going out soon myself to do this. But I dont have anything this striking or fabulous to paint. But I do have a pretty park and some hills. So yes please help me out and do more of these. It will help so much
I live close to Boulder. Older now and not as agile as you but loved skiing and exploring canyons and waterfalls and riding our horses up in the mountains. Now I enjoy watercolor and less strenuous activities. Let me know if you ever do a class in Colorado. Love to come.
Love your plein air paintings. I bought a ponchod box and have painted from the box inside to see if I have everything I need and then I did one outside. It turned out okay…. and I loved it.
I love this! I just purchased a plein air box easel….. It says it’s light weight and I hope it is…. I see the little one your using and I hope I didn’t make a mistake. I’m learning so much from you and hope you continue. You have a great way of describing and explaining what how and why your doing something. Thank you
I live in the Blue Mountains in Australia. We went through one of the worst bushfire in 2019 and our mountains were scorched earth decimated. Now the bush is starting to recover. I think I'll be doing some painting now that I can bear to see the recovery rather than the absolute devastation. You have inspired me.
I am so sorry you suffered through the fires! The whole world was praying for Australia! Glad to hear the area is recovering a little. It might be interesting and beautiful to document the process of regrowth through your art. I'd love to see your outdoor paintings!

Great video, showing a combination of interlocked enjoyments, personality, skills, nature, and good old fresh air, just wonderful! Please do a few more of these example videos with an repeated emphasis on quick techniques, selected tools and materials all wrapped neatly into an integrated process. Examples are so helpful.

I tried to do it with a similar image of Colorado and only two brushes for strokes' harmony, maybe you could advice me after taking a look to my result. I am a selftaught artist so the way you explain things, the process and tips helps me a lot to figure out how to handle simply but correctly watercolour ! It's a long road sometimes to paint landscapes and I am really happy to have succeed my try also for rocks and moss, the only thing is that I created my own sepia color with blue + black + brown as I don't have one ready to use so that's pretty challenging to mix because we don't have the same palet mine is the brand Louvre and CP Canson Montval ! I am not really good in the loose way painting because I focus too much on details, and it's the worst I think when it comes to trees (dark ones can be vibrant in the same time) along with their trunk and soil for example (cracks also in rocks for mountain even if I have to select the main ones I know) and I noticed it mades a great difference strangely for the depth/mid-tones/values even with the right contrast. Your learners must be really enthousiastic with you as a teacher, they are lucky, you bring such beautiful vibes because as you say often in your videos, you like your job pretty well so we feel it in each artwork *.*! That's a pity, woman painters in my country don't do much plein air paintings due to many things so guess what I am more an indoor person lol
That's great you are thinking about harmonious brush strokes! Simple is definitely better when plein air painting. Squinting helps you see the important things. Keep at it!

Great question! I still do wet in wet, but I have to be very aware of how much water is in my brush at all times to prevent drips. Good quality paper can absorb paint and water beautifully even when upright.
Love it. It was fun to see your little tripod and palette setup. What did you use for filming? Another tripod and your phone? Just curious. I went to college in Boulder and still live in Colorado - just in a much less populated area now. Your painting turned out quite nice, especially (as you said) with the aspect ratio you had to work with because of your sketchbook size.
Thanks for your comment, Miranda! I used a travel tripod with my mirrorless vlogging camera set up just behind me, and I also filmed with my iphone attached to my painting easel with an adjustable arm.

What would be a good umbrella system to work with this pochade box?
I'm researching umbrellas--I have yet to try one!
