It’s kind of assumable this happened too because the jet is very clear beside him in a lot of shots and we all know that since 9/11 things like this, they will shoot you out of the sky before you kill people on the ground. They edged him further and further into the wooded areas so when they did shoot him down it would be minimal damage. They never had any intention to help him land it.
