Yes this test was real. It did not have any passengers, it was part of the FAA certification procedure that all American made aircraft have to go through. It was to test the airframe on a hard landing condition. The tail structure was beefed up as a result of this test.
it's called a flare...every pilot does that right before he lands so that the main gear(which are much stronger than the nose gear)hit the ground first
Nice video! Seeing what broke I don't think it was close to the passenger area, only the tail's small engine (APU) and the entire plane's hydraulic control systems (all but the plane wheels were out of control just after the tail fell). I would say that even the engines were safe. NB: I'm aero engineer
The thing is that the aft fusilage is supposed to fall away in an emergency to allow easy escape, that piece is called the tailcone. But as for why the entire tailplane came with it, that definitely made the engineers rethink their design a little LOL
Yea, I am scared about getting on these, did it many times, but always think, "oh God, what if our systems status go south?". It's the risk people take everyday to get from point A to point Z. I still think we are at more risk in a car any day over a day in a commercial airliner. Wew, luckily no one was hurt in this one, but I am sure it scared the piss out everyone aboard.
it's not the rudder that steers the plane during taxi.. it's the front gear controlled by the tiller that turns much like your car. that sounds like a typical flight simulator comment.
if your rate of descent was that fast, the nose wouldn't be up, it would be pointed toward the ground unless the spoilers were deployed, and they weren't
the pilot landed the shit out of that thing, that was nowhere near a normal landing, it was either a stress test, or a very unique emergency landing situation
not possible, the landing gear would sheer off into the ground, the landing gear can't take that much stress, the tail can take more stress than the gear. this is a set up.
Looks like a blatant attempt to break the plane in half by hitting the midsection on the ground first - it's a miracle that the nose didn't break off as well.
the plane stalled at 00.4 and when flaps are fully extended, the nose points DOWN, thats the whole point, so that the pilot can see where he/she is going. Landing gear are stronger than most people think, i'm pretty sure that was legitimate.
I was on that flight. It's funny though....we never knew what happened until we were home and saw it on the news! Captain just taxied to the terminal as usual.

“Are you still alive” is what you say
The biggest irony is that all three landing gears stayed intact, even after the horizontal vertical stabilizers broke off!
The thing is that the aft fusilage is supposed to fall away in an emergency to allow easy escape, that piece is called the tailcone. But as for why the entire tailplane came with it, that definitely made the engineers rethink their design a little LOL
Last time i checked this model of plane the MD-80 are no longer made but still in service.
Tailstrike alert
Tail strike without the neccessary pitch-up to do it xD
IIRC, this crash was during the airplane's development and only the test pilots were on board.

It was a test by the company that made the plane so no one was on board.
I was going to say always sit at the back cos planes never back into mountains...not sure where to sit now !
it's not the rudder that steers the plane during taxi.. it's the front gear controlled by the tiller that turns much like your car. that sounds like a typical flight simulator comment.
thats why its a test flight

Soon after the incident, rescue workers safely extracted the 500 pound stewardess from the separated tail section.
This was supposedly during a hard landing test, but wow.
this was a test. not a real flight.
No, this was a planned test.
We lost something!
Not to worry, We're still landing half a plane.
Dont worry, it will regrow just like a lizard tail
if youre flying a budget airline, always fly in the back rows:P that way if you crash, the other passengers act as a huge crumple zone:P lol
NEVER sit in the back row.
There is no seating behind the engines the a DC-9/MD-80 aircraft.
Nothing a little duct tape and bailing twine won't fix!
It was a test flight why do you think theres no one else there? And that theres a camera video taping?
the pilot landed the shit out of that thing, that was nowhere near a normal landing, it was either a stress test, or a very unique emergency landing situation
That is what the tiller is for!
The rudder is useless for taxi!
just a normal Md-80 landing
This is a meme now
ryanair training 2016 color

What flight is this
RYANAIR landing
I'm afraid that makes no sense at all. In slow flight or on landing, you fly with the flaps extended and the nose *up*.
dang wat the heck was wrong with it?
pilot came down too fast and hard..haha ssapebut is pretty funny
You weren't on that flight and the captain didn't taxi that pile anywhere! You can see the training wheel collapsed as the nose came down.
Omg
WOT U MAKE CHOCLATE BARS
Oh crap, I've flown on one of those. I don't think I'll do it again anytime soon.
He was stalling. His sink rate was way to high and he was behind the power curve. I think this was a test flight or controlled crash for research.
Looks like a blatant attempt to break the plane in half by hitting the midsection on the ground first - it's a miracle that the nose didn't break off as well.
it looks like he descended to fast and hit the pavement hard.
you can see the whole plane's body warps..
yea that was a hard hit landing..
I am sorry sir , you didn't pass your FAA Pilot's Licence Test , please taxi to the nearest BATHROOM PLEASE.
I guess that's what happens when you try to land at -1500 feet per minute.
thats about as funny as a fart in a 172
that is what I call a PROFESSIONAL :D, no not really...
Imagine the poor bastards sitting near the back! Screw that! LOL!
I wanna ride!!!!!!!!!!!
ummmmm captain I think you lost something.
727 was and is better!
too hard landing, I think that was a controlled test to see what happens.
CHOCOLATE
9
Like a fish floundering! Hate those planes. Pity the guy near the tail. Must have kacked his trollys!! Or did he fall out?
uuuuu....NICE LANDING!!!
GUYS if you are facebook users you can join the group
SAVE THE "MAD-DOG".....(MD-80)
@StealthCessnaCombats Wow.. is that the best you've got big shot?
were the cooks in the tail? lol
lol he was waaayyyyy too slow on landing, couldn't generate the lift he needed and slammed it down on the runway.
Sit on the wing so you can jump off close to the ground in a botched landing (humor)
millions
pilot was drunk?
It's a test of 1ft/s descent rate above structural limit.
yes, thats correct:) how on earth does that relate to my comment??
rofl so much for tail support lmao
The price to pay for smoking in the economy toilets...lol
lol

The MD 80 was a failure plane.
This plane took off again 20 minutes later!!
Was This Filmed In 1985? The Camera Quality!
hahaah
HAHAHAHHA!!! lol:D
;( Who let the kids on this channel ??? WTF
I was on that flight.
It's funny though....we never knew what happened until we were home and saw it on the news! Captain just taxied to the terminal as usual.
