I've been a casual viewer of booktok for a few years and the idea that any kind of criticism is a personal attack to ppl who read that book has always baffled me. Great video!
Me as well. And lately it got worse and worse. This is why it’s incredibly important to stand against bullying and stop supporting people who keep bullying people out of the community, who share their opinions. However, I share the sentiment of not wanting to be a part of this community, too.
Colleen Hoover, that hockey romance, and so many books of the same genre/themes/authors are so bad. No one's stopping you from reading them, but you can't stop people from criticizing them, specially if some of these books sound like they're written by AI, have confusing/terrible messaging (Hoover), or are just copies of better written Fantasy and YA novels. And the titles and covers of these Romantasy/YA/Dystopian books? They all look the same.
We are "told" from booktube that we need a full home library with 200+ books and all the special editions from multiple subscription boxes. We forget that many booktubers are gifted all those books from publishers. We forget that many booktubers have their channel as their full-time job and are able to afford all those books. We forget it's not real-life.
I’m a natural critic - very few things are PERFECT to me, it makes me a strong artist and consumer. It doesn’t hinder my enjoyment of things, if anything it improves it because of the conversations I can have regarding the art I’ve just consumed. If other people want to engage with something non critically that’s fine too! But someone being critical of a piece of art is not a personal attack, even on the artist themselves!
I am of an older generation, who buys books for the love of reading. I usually don't buy new books, though I do get them as gifts. I also think my taste in books that I read are very different, I like to read classics and mysteries and science fiction. I do love beautiful covers and I have bought a book, (second hand or through re-sale market,) for a beautiful cover but I always want to read the book. I am not a book blogger, though I do blog about books I am reading. My biggest argument with what you said in this vlog is you say you if can't afford to travel but buy a book you are not telling the truth, I buy my books from the re-sale market or second hand market. They still have beautiful covers but cost a lot less then the prices you are quoting. I have bought new books, on special occasions like my birthday, but that is because I am given money for that purpose, I am one of those people who are on limited income and cannot afford to travel. I wish I could, I miss traveling.
I have a system of finding a book that I would like to read and its 1. the title has to catch my attention 2. the summery of the book has to sound interesting 3. I will open to a random page and read a random paragraph and to see how things are worded in the book. if it passes at least the first and the third on the second is optional I will buy the book to read. So far it has worked for me I could care less on how the cover looks as long as it's a good book and a good read. plus, I'm also buying the books that I read in junior high and high school or my nieces to read when they get older and if they want o read them
If I wanted to read a story about hockey, I'd read a fanfiction. The main characters could literally have any other job and it would be same. I also hated how misogynistic the book was, and I only flipped through+heard my friend gush about it
I honestly feel like I'm too outdated with bookstagram as I just recently started one. I like reviewing books which became a hobby during the pandemic. I like how I tell people how I felt with the book I read. I have a really ugly feed but I continue reviewing books as I enjoy reading and reviewing at the same time. I just don't want to make my feed pretty for books with pretty covers but end up in my DNF list.

And in some ways they are the same! Criticism is important and essential.
Thank you for your comments!
Thank you for the long and researched video. I appreciate your insight about safe spaces, that is something I had never considered before.
Thank you so much for your comment!
Would love to see a video about the buying addiction and going into debt from book buying!
Thank you so much for your request! I’ll look into it and will see if I can make a video out of it.

I didn’t enjoy Icebreaker for some reason
