I've been covering my cake boards like this for about 30 years, with fanci foils from the florist, in colors to match the wedding color schemes. I have several colors and shades. I just use 2 cardboard cake circles with the ridges going in opposite directions for strength, and also glue a smaller cake circle on the bottom, with glue spray. I don't cover them with contact paper. I attach the ribbons on the sides with contact cement. You've given me a new way to cover a cake board, perhaps with scrapbook papers. So pretty.
Shani, I cannot express how happy I am to have come across your tutorial. It is easy to follow and the designs are doable even for a novice like me. Thank you so much!!!!!
Thank you for your tutorial. I'm a new home baker that's always looking for new ideas and ways to improve my business. This is a great idea and I can't wait to create my first cake board.
Love love love this tutorial. I was just telling my husband it's time to buy cake drums and how expensive they are. Now I can make my own! Thank you for such an informative video.
Thanks so much for sharing your tutorial! Very detailed and informative! I dread to think how much fondant I’ve used to cover my cake boards over the 10 years I’ve been making cakes!
I've tried this method to cover my cake boards after watching your video. The method I was using before was tedious and took forever. Thank you for uploading this video.
I just wanted to thank you for your tutorial! This is a winner in my opinion because it is much lighter than fondant. I love the look of matching my cake designs with my boards. When I added a decorative layer of fondant to the cake board, it seemed to make the tiered cake heavier. This is so much better! I have a tendency of being a little messy 🤦♀️ and have gotten a little bit of buttercream on the covered board. I ended up with a “butter stain”! Yikes 😳 When your client buys a cake for a special day, something like that would be horrible for business and your reputation!
Fabulous tutorial. I can't wait to try try this - better than the typical cake drums covered in foil. Now to find the artisan papers! very unique and what a selling point!!!!
I loved your video I do have a question Do you then put your cakes directly on the cake board you made? Or do the cakes still need to have a cake round under the cake Have you ever had a cake slide off the cake board?
I also use cake circles under my cakes and use buttercream to stick it to the cake board. Never had an issue (knock on wood!) Double sided tape is an amazing idea...never even occurred to me. :)
How many cake boards can you make with one sheet of foam board ??? For example, how many 8 inch drums can I make ? Trying to see if this is cost effective
Hey Shani, I love that you did this and I also watched the one that Liz Marek did.. I am just learning things and I was wondering where you got the hot glue gun at? I like the one that you have there..
Hi! Thank you for this great tutorial! I appreciate your time! What is the grey board you are doing your work on? Is it cut correction? Do you use this board for fondant as well? ~Jules in Rhode Island
@Shani's Sweet Art: WHAT A BRILLIANT IDEA!!! I was wondering...is it okay to use crafter's non-toxic "spray" glue around the edge to adhere the ribbon "OR" does it have to be hot glue? Every time I attempt to smear the hot glue it dries out so fast that I haven't enough time to attach the ribbon & embellishments to it. I have even attempted to go small sections at a time. Perhaps, I need to use the "strength" of hot glue you're using. I tried the moderate-low temperature glue sticks, but it dries way to fast. Please advise? Thank You!
If you do use the spray glue I suggest spraying the back of the ribbon and not the edge of the board. I think it will be easier to keep the board free of overspray that way. Let me know how it works!
Thank you Shani for your speedy reply! Yes, it worked out very well...I sprayed the ribbon as you suggested, then quickly worked to place the sprayed ribbon around a 22-inch round. Thank you so much for your tutorial regarding how to make beautiful custom cake boards it was very helpful, indeed! :-D
Thanks for this great video - it was very helpful and had lots of good ideas. I just wanted to point out that ConTact paper is not food safe. However, Duck Brand Shelf Liner is: www.amazon.com/Duck-Brand-Clear-Classic-Non-Adhesive/dp/B07MTH5YMM. I don't work for them, I just try to make sure everything that touches food is food safe. I will definitely use your wonderful tips for making these beautiful cake boards, as it is the perfect finishing touch to custom cakes. Thank you for taking the time to share.
Thank you for the information. I had previously researched the ConTact brand and found resources that said it was food safe. However I believe that was either false information or they have changed the product and it is no longer fad approved as food safe. I am glad to hear that Duct brand is! Thank you for the comment. Happy Caking!
I make a loop of the ribbon and hot glue the ends together. The another little piece of the ribbon wraps around the middle and hot glues on the back. Then hot glue it to your board :D
Hello dear, thanks so much for this very informative tutorial. However, is the clear contact paper food safe and where can I buy a food safe clear contact paper?
I'm glad you liked the tutorial. The clear contact paper is not rated as food safe. I always construct my cakes on a greaseproof cake circle and use double stick tape to secure the cake to the custom cake board. I get my contact paper on Amazon
No, there is a clear contact paper over the scratch book paper. In the video it shows you how to do that. I also construct my cakes on a regular cake circle and use double stick tape to attach the cake on the circle to the decorated cake board. The cake only touches the food safe cake circle.
@@ShanisSweetCreations Thank you for the reply 😍😍😍😍I was worried that it, because in many videos they explain how to make cake board, but don't explain how to place the cake! So first place in normal thinny cake board. I was thinking already about to do like this, but I was worried if the tap would be enough to keep the cakes boards together. 🤗🤗🤗
foam core is just the foam poster boards really. I'm not sure where you live, but if its in the US, they sell them at dollar stores and definitely Walmart!
not sure how this is cheaper than fondant when you're using so many materials which all add up in cost? Foam cores are not as cheap as people make them out to be, same with contact paper.
The contact paper gives the cake board a plastic cover once the board is covered or decorated. The decorative paper or gift wrap will never come in contact with the cake itself.
What a nice tutorial- easy to understand, no annoying music in the background and perfect instructions. 👏👏👏👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼🥰🥰🥰

The board on the back is genius
Beautiful.... Heartfelt thanks for the idea.
Genius! I always thought covering cake boards with fondant was a waste of product since you couldn't eat it.
Thank you. I much prefer the paper covered boards!
Sugar Rae Bryant Plus I don’t really like the way it feels in the mouth. Usually peel it off

absolutely fantastic idea 🤩😍❤️
Hello! Will the buttercream stick the cake to the plastic on the board? I’m worried it would slide around.
That was so cool, I loved it thank you.
Love your ideas! Thanks for the video.
You're welcome!
I really enjoyed watching. Im from the philippines and feel sad that we dont have that clear adhesive plastic.
Can we use plastic cover? 😅
Just search contact paper in shopee po. Maybe not clear but you can just skip the paper step and just use the contact paper design. Much easier. 😁

They are on a cake board.
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
Thank y very much
Hey! I love making cakes for fun and I don’t sell them. Can I reuse these cake boards?
Yes you can certainly reuse them. I just wipe off the board with a damp cloth and use again.
Hi how you place cake on this board after you finish
awesome👍
Can I cover my board with tin foil?
How do you make the cute little bow on your other one?
I make a loop of the ribbon and hot glue the ends together. The another little piece of the ribbon wraps around the middle and hot glues on the back. Then hot glue it to your board :D
love it

What a great idea....Love it. 👍up✔️ hug from🇨🇭. Mona
Great video ma
Pls what's the name of the paper?
My favorite to use is Japanese Mulberry paper. I also use scrapbooking paper and gift wrap. Any decorative paper will work.
Where do you get the foam board?
Scrapbook paper can be in contact with the cake?
No, there is a clear contact paper over the scratch book paper. In the video it shows you how to do that. I also construct my cakes on a regular cake circle and use double stick tape to attach the cake on the circle to the decorated cake board. The cake only touches the food safe cake circle.

Great idea. I have a question? What is that foam called?
It's called Foam Core or Foam Board
How much does it cost per cake board you make?
Lynna De La Cruz she said $1.50 to $1.75
What’s foam core? Is that what she’s saying?
foam core is just the foam poster boards really. I'm not sure where you live, but if its in the US, they sell them at dollar stores and definitely Walmart!
excellent
Thank you!
merci
not sure how this is cheaper than fondant when you're using so many materials which all add up in cost? Foam cores are not as cheap as people make them out to be, same with contact paper.
I estimate my cost at around $1.50 per board depending on size. This is an alternative for people who don't want to use fondant on their boards.
Are theses food safe? I.e due to requirements when using packaging for food?
She did say food safe somewhere in the video but i would do my own research to double check
The contact paper gives the cake board a plastic cover once the board is covered or decorated. The decorative paper or gift wrap will never come in contact with the cake itself.
I don't understand how this could cost you less than $2/board
