    I still don't subscribe to the whole "power is a safety feature" argument. Once you have performance around 10s for 0-60mph you have enough to merge with traffic etc. Yes, fast acceleration is "enabling", but if it is enabling you to get out of trouble then it's probably trouble that you got yourself into in the first place. Certainly from a personal perspective, in 30 years with a driving license i have only once had to accelerate out of trouble that i didn't initially accelerate myself into.

    • @ShadrachN7
      @ShadrachN7 5 месяцев назад +5

      Devon resident here. There are a fair few dual carriageways in this neck of the woods with exceptionally short slip roads, or even just with conventional junctions where you are joining traffic at 70mph.
      A ten second 0-60 whilst not "unsafe" per se, is certainly less safe than a car that can get there quicker.

    • @theaikidoka
      @theaikidoka 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ShadrachN7Also a Devon resident. I frequently have to use the sliproad from Kennford services onto Telegraph Hill, outside Exeter. It's a very short road, onto a three-lane steep uphill. I'd love more power than my SEAT has, because otherwise I have to wait for BIG gaps.

    • @15bit62
      @15bit62 5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ShadrachN7 That would be "enabling", not "accelerating out of danger", as you have the choice to just wait for a bigger gap. The power is not a safety feature, just a helpful one.

    • @ShadrachN7
      @ShadrachN7 5 месяцев назад +1

      @15bit62 Whilst I agree that it's of course best practice to wait for the largest gap possible, the reality is that these junctions often have restricted vision, the road will be busy, or both. Even when taking all precautions to minimise risk, it's still quite possible to emerge onto the dual carriageway into the path of a vehicle that was unseen until then (the junction @theaikidoka mentions is a great example, being a short slip that exits onto the bend of a 70mph dual carriageway with restricted vision).
      Drivers are only human, and thus sooner or later we are going to make a poor judgement call when emerging onto the carriageway. When that happens, wouldn't you sooner have a car with more power that can quickly mitigate risk by getting up to speed?

    • @15bit62
      @15bit62 5 месяцев назад

      @@ShadrachN7 I used to live in a place where the only exit was a T junction on to dual carriageway halfway round a blind corner. So i completely understand your point of view. But that is still not accelerating out of trouble. It is accelerating into trouble and then using the power to get out of it. Yes, i know this seems like semantics, but it isn't. If you have less power you will generally be more careful, and that of course has always reflected in insurance premiums.

    Remember that depreciation is region-specific. The UK has historically always had high depreciation - 50% in 3 years was always normal. But here in Norway 50% in 5 years is the norm. And EVs follow that, because they remain popular here. But in the UK the poor infrastructure and natural reticence of the brits when it comes to change combine to depress EV residual values a lot.

Lots of fun, slow but highly manoeuvreble, until white van man pulled out on me and crossed my path to turn right from a left-hand side road at the end of a dual carriageway. Even now, all these 51 years later, I can still remember the impact as the bonnet halved in length, the front wings peeled off and items in the back flew into the windshield at only 40 MPH. From a "spirited driving" perspective i actually prefer slower cars. Especially older cars. I miss old school GTIs like the 205 and 106, which were small, light, nimble, and you could rev them out in the first 3 gears without being outrageously over the limit. My Model 3 is just too fast - the handling is totally dictated by the power and there is no need to balance the car up and take a good line through corners cos the power immediately compensates for slow exit speeds. It's also too big, so even though its actually pretty nimble, there just isn't enough space on B roads for it. It is however a fantastic A-road car for long distance travelling, with lots of luggage space and the ability to easily overtake anything that is holding you up.

    This video is why I like my Kona N so much. It has power, probably comparable to the Focus ST so you’ll know it shifts but there’s so much more to it than just that. In N mode it has both exhausts going with the valves opened so it sounds great, pops and bangs on command. It has a bit of torque steer which adds to the excitement. It can handle itself in the corners thanks to the E-diff and the sports suspension (that will be the end of my back). It’s a car that you can have fun with whilst keeping it legal. Accelerating up to 60 in second then having it pop on the gear change is fun. The sound is so important to that fun factor I think. Missing it in an electric removes so much especially that fun factor.

    Interesting commentary. Absolutely agree that the Taycan isn't for everyone. However there's certainly plenty of opportunities to enjoy one in the UK and abroad, we actually have an EV class at a local sprint which takes place on closed roads at the weekend which the Taycan would be depressingly good at for us petrolheads!
    I disagree that the power of the Taycan etc is pointless - there is definitely a lot of fun to be derived from having a whopping great stick and treading lightly. Obviously the other factors - handling, braking etc are generally attached to cars that accelerate quickly too.
    My big concern about this and other high performance EVs though is that they are incredibly heavy and whilst they do handle well, they don't override physics. They have an ability to *quickly* get an owner into trouble and aren't the best at getting them out of it. Couple that with owners who aren't typically used to driving supercars, will likely have come from something FAR more sedate, and often aren't massively focused on driving, and you have a lot of accidents.
    I'd really like to see you drive something like a Renaultsport Clio 172 and compare it to the Taycan. Driving enjoyment at legal speeds are those cars' thing.

    Honestly it's an epic vehicle, but £147,800 list price and 2 years later, WeBuyAnyCar would pay just £36k (35,000 miles). I have never been so happy to have leased the car rather than own. I suspect EVs will remain best for lease over purchase for some time to come.

    There's dozens of these where I live, I think just about everyone bought it on a company car plan (which is the only sane way to buy one). Was sorely tempted to do the same on the wife's plan as the monthly payments were surprisingly low.
    Anyway, turns out it was a good idea to wait as Porsche have just announced the facelifted model that's not only quicker but has a new battery with new chemistry so it gives far more range and charges faster while actually weighing slightly less. And that brings up the fundamental point that electric cars are improving so rapidly that it's probably smarter to wait them out a few more years as the technology progresses.

    You can replace “cyclist” with any road user as you know that you might be seeing them again as you drive along the road.

    Depreciation on (ICE) Porsches is so low that when you lease a sports car you can often get a more expensive Porsche than say an Audi TT or Merc simply because the residuals are so good on the Porsches compared to the lesser alternatives. I would imagine that the residuals on a Taycan are more governed by the fact that it is an EV that means that at some point customers are going to get a big hit for battery replacement long before Porsche's legendary longevity applies and given Porsche's reputation for labour/parts prices, battery replacement may mean that it becomes an uneconomic repair, despite the good state of all the other components.
    Current indicators point towards EVs being a dead end in terms of vehicle propulsion, except for solely urban environments. Mercedes has just recently announced that it too, along with VAG and Toyota, (the world's two biggest car manufacturers, is moving away from EVs and concentrating on ICE powered vehicles. Tesla sales are plummeting and the other manufacturers are all reporting lower than expected sales of EVs. The only one to buck the trend is BYD, the Chinese company.

    After 30 plus years in the motor trade, and having driven a range of vehicles from Fiat 126 to 7.5 tonne box vans, I like you Ashley view cars as no more than a tool to transport me to my destination. Like most possessions, cars are often a status symbol. Unfortunately cars like this Taycan are too powerfull for 99% of the purchasers. As an aside, I drove a 911 many years ago, early 80s, and it put me off Porsches permanently.

    Interesting video for me this one, because for some time I’ve been thinking of getting an early, highly depreciated Taycan to replace my 2020 Zoe. Being a retired LGV/PSV driver the physical size wouldn’t faze me, servicing and maintenance and perhaps insurance would however.
    But like you mentioned, what can it do over and above my Zoe which I only drive around town in the 10-20 minutes I’d be in it? Simply put nothing.
    But it’s obviously better built and with that name, hugely desirable.
    All of which makes it hard to resist, but I think I will, for the time being at least unless it drops under £30k, then I’ll not be able to contain myself. 😂

    I got my first properly quick car , a BMW M4, about 1 year ago. It didn’t take long to realise the cars just too fast to enjoy in the roads. This lead to me starting to do track days with the car where it’s possible to see just how capable the car is. Not so sure this would work as an option for an EV though as range would be a real issue. I get 5mpg on track vs 30+ on the motorway. Scaling an EVs range down accordingly would lead to a rather short trackday!

    There were lots of expensive issues/recalls with the early Taycans, which is why they have such high depreciation; Porsche cant sell them fast enough, and they are piling up at dealers - to the extent, dealers dont want to take them back in P/X, and are offering stupidly low money in the hope the owners will sell them privately (according to other YT Taycan owners).

    If I lived somewhere with plenty of space to car and charge it [charge it away from the house because of the fire risk]
    I would have a small EV runabout to go the shops and back.
    But would still need to own a petrol or diesel to actually do anything substantial.

      The "fire risk" is smaller per-vehicle than combustion powered cars.
      A bigger risk is the electrician thinking they know how tight to screw terminals and not using a torque screwdriver, leading to arcing in the charging unit itself or the consumer unit it's attached to.

      Anyone who deals with safety will tell you that a risk assessment is done by multiplying the likelihood of something happening by the severity of the incident if it did.
      The likelihood of a waste paper-basket at a smoking area catching fire is quite high, but the fire can be put out by a simple bucket of sand so the fire risk is very low.
      The likely hood of an EV catching fire is comparatively quite low. but if it did the fire cannot be put out so that elevates the fire risk to extremely high.
      also when looking at statistics to assess a safety hazard you need to allow for discrepancies in the amount of incidents per the amount of items being looked at.
      If there are 100,000 ICE vehicle and 200 of them catch fire that is a low statistic.
      But if there are only 10,000 EVs and 50 of them catch fire then that is an extremely high statistic

    you mentioned about the touch screen and to ignore it but from experience of my brothers volvo v90 2019 plate car, the heating controls are apart of the touch screen menu, so you kind of have to use them if you become uncomfortable and need to adjust the temp, unless you pull over to do it (not very practical on a motorway to pull over). i really dont like heating controls built into the touch screen system but apparently volvo think its a safe idea.
    the other thing about the power of the car, its most likely a car built to drive on the autobahn, but possibly to be driven to a track for a saturday of fun driving a track day for example. the power is nice to have on the road, gives more options to avoid a situation, but its the driver that needs to be disciplined enough to keep it in the speed limits.

    21:10 Most EVs saw inflation on the second hand market during the pandemic and supply chain crises, coinciding with the expansion of the ULEZ in London and the introduction of CAZs in other cities.
    The depreciation they saw since then has mostly put the second hand market back where it would have been, perhaps a little steeper than ICE car depreciation over the 20 years prior to the pandemic...
    But also, with tech developing all the time AND downward pressure on newer EVs, with more and more models becoming available, it's hardly surprising thst there's depreciation above the typical level seen for bog-standard fire-powered cars have typically seen.

    At about 23 minutes in you talk about the steering feel. We have had a Lotus Elise and a Mazda MX-5. The steering on the Elise was wedded to a fantastic chassis and had no power assistance, so as a result it felt like you were running your fingers over the road surface, but it so direct it was brutal. If there were any major defects in the road surface it would batter your hands, so longer journeys became tiresome. The MX-5 was better in some ways in that even with power steering potentially interfering, it was so well weighted, balanced and direct that you could still feel what the front wheels were doing, giving you great feedback on the grip and traction available, which on decent tyres was considerable. Given the speed limits and congestion on British roads, at a third of the cost of your Porsche, there is no better "fun" car available than the MX-5 IMHO.

Genius in terms of turnover for that period, but it totally destroyed the 2nd hand market 2-4 years later, hence why now they have Depreciate so hard. It's nothing to do with it being an EV ... as a lot of cars from that period have had similar depreciation. Pick up a 2nd hard car and you'll get a major deal.
    Most cars Depreciate 45-55% over 3 years so any £100k car will lose 1/2 on average. If you can't afford it don't do it ... if you can enjoy it!

    What should be done in england is to take the speed limit off the motorways, or increase it. Afterall they are the only road types reserved for faster motor traffic. So maybe changing it from 110km/h to maybe 140 would be a improvement. I moved to work from england to germany and even though i dont drive, i was a passanger many times and driving on the Autobahns where you see the "national speed limit sign" is very fun, you must drive safely but if the the car allows it, you bomb it. Meaning riding such cars like that Porsche is much more fun. Lets be honest, speed limits on UK motorways are a joke, they aren't A roads which (rightfully so) everybody can use.

      If you can charge at home and don't commonly drive so far that you would need to fast charge, they are actually very good to own. If you are a business traveler regularly doing 2-300 miles or more in a day with time-critical meetings, well then an EV is definitely more compromised.
      I do >500 mile days in my Tesla several times a year and it really isn't that bad. We drive round every summer from central Norway to the UK (1850 miles), and i've done that in 3 days. Yes, on paper it takes longer than a diesel, but when we actually compared times for the 530 mile trip to my in-laws they were the same cos we stop in the same places for the same times, irrespective of the car. But as a family we like to stop every 2.5 to 3 hours. If you can drive 5 hours in one sitting then you will experience some inconvenience.
