Learner riders shouldn't be able to get business insurance. It's a mockery of the whole point of learner status. You shouldn't be able to ride for business until you've learned to ride.

@kenbrown2808 With my limited experience looking at job applications for delivery companies, I believe it's pretty easy to take a job like that in your own vehicle without actually proving you have appropriate insurance

The blue BMW has no concept of giving space for anything or anyone. After the poor pass of the cyclist they give very little room passing the parked van. Did they even know there was someone walking in front of it at 2:56?
04:48 - I've seen exactly this sort of thing before. Those two on that bike were on the rob. They'll be up and down the road looking for people mindlessly staring at their phones.

Regarding the one way clip, you were spot on, she just didn't care.
I used to regularly use a one way street near a school (opposite it's gates). I saw many drivers intentionally drive the wrong way. A couple of times I did manage to direct them back the other way.
The last time I ended up having a row with the driver as they were blocked by my vehicle going the right way. I noted the school proximity, but they turned it on me by claiming they were too afraid to reverse because of the children. I told them it was nothing to do with that and if they weren't competent enough to reverse they shouldn't be driving. I eventually had to relent because another driver appeared behind me and there's nothing gained from debating a brick wall.
My local test centre is on a one-way street. The amount of people that turn down the end because they're lazy and don't want to go around (takes thirty seconds) to enter a property nearer the end is crazy, especially when you have people literally starting their driving tests.
One time I was driving someone back from their test and a woman in a large BMW SUV turned in with multiple instructors driving out, and she had the gall to throw her hands up at us.
I'd bet that's your classic "It's only 10m back to the junction rather than driving half a mile out of my way" thing.
There's a row of houses, right next to where I live, on a one-way street and every morning at 8am cars have to sit and wait on the main road while everybody reverses down the one-way street onto the main road, one after the other, rather than driving 200m forward and coming out in the correct place.
I see it mainly in shopping centre or supermarket car parks when you get a stand off😂😂

I live on a one-way street (5 houses from the end). I didn't see this incident myself, but my other half told me that one time, a driver was going the wrong way only to be faced with a police car with blues & twos blaring..! They were on an urgent shout so didn't have time to stop and deal with him, so he was told in no uncertain terms to turn around and [insert expletive of choice] off 🤣

However many out there will wind down the window for a verbal slanging match as they are aggrieved the other vehicle cake out of nowhere and made them do an emergency stop 😉
"Highway Maintenance" and "Baby On Board". Two signs that shouldn't cause anybody alarm, but I find myself giving them a wide berth.

Highway Maintenance should be capable of driving properly, no excuses. Baby on board I might be wary because the driver might be tired or getting suddenly distracted by the baby. Not an excuse if they have a problem, but it's possible that they might be less able than they normally would be.
@@stephandolby a couple of weeks ago I was behind a car with a "baby on board" in the rear window... and also a bumper sticker that read "Honk if you gotta 'hawk tuah!' and spit on that thang!"... I had no words!
@@theaikidoka Very good idea - we got rear ended at lights a few years back, all the cars (including the one behind) were stopped, lady behind just boots it thinking the lights green and we're out the way, when it's actually red, slams in the back of us, apparently she was checking her baby - even if the baby was choking etc so you might have an excuse - but don't ruddy accelerate!

The other week I was in a car with a colleague, who was determined to get in front of a learner vehicle with a roof box. When I asked why, he said "I don't want to be behind them if they do an emergency stop"... I didn't know whether to laugh or cry, so I just bit my tongue!

@@Okurka. If you are the correct distance behind, it REALLY does NOT matter what the vehicle ahead is, or who is driving it. If you are so close that you could not also easily perform a hard brake and still be a safe distance from the front vehicle, that is your fault not theirs.
I don't have any problems around driving school vehicles because I don't harass them and I give them enough space that they can screw up or do something illogical and I can still react. That isn't a brag, that's the basic level of competence everyone should have.

Ashely was at a give way junction this includes all traffic whether they are overtaking or reversing as they are priority over other vechiles joining , there have been many court cases involing this scenario each time the person at the giveway was found at fault for not giveway to oncoming traffic .

Glad you’re going to report the red jumpers, I’ve noticed a large increase in this behaviour recently. It appears to me many are just driving too fast into the situation and throwing the dice, of course some are intentional, but most throw the dice!
It will be interesting to see the outcomes, eventually, of the reporting red-light jumpers.

All RLJ incidents I have reported end up with either a warningnletter being sent or a polite “reminder of responsibility when driving” letter. Not one has resulted in points and / or fine
More recent submissions of mobile phone use has ended up with “We have identified the driver and they will be sent a reminder about the law in mobile phone use when driving”

2:40 always find this the most frustrating thing when cycling, literally causes the driver zero inconvenience yet they still won't give space. I question sometimes whether this is premeditated, due to their dislike of cyclists, or else just due to pure ignorance, I'm not sure which is more concerning if I'm honest.

I think this has been discussed previously on the channel in a video. I can’t remember the full circumstances but if I remember badly then it was someone coming through against the flow of traffic lights because the junction was blocked and it was only blocked as it was difficult to see

07:30 On a side note, that yellow box is diabolical. There seems to be no way of knowing, when entering, that you will be able to traverse the box without stopping. Your view is obstructed by the wall, a bend and a small hill. On top of all that, there is the sheer size of it. I wonder what the Adjudicator at the TPT would make of it.
I wouldn't say it's diabolical, just essentially unenforceable because of the restricted view. It still communicates that they don't want people queueing over the bridge. What would you suggest as an alternative way to communicate that?

At 7:00 it looks like the ambulance had stopped beyond the 'Stop' line so could legally continue on red, if safe to do so.
5:49 another oddity I fail to understand with lane 2 dwellers is this need to move to lane 2 on approach to roundabouts when on dual carriageways…and then cut back over to lane 1 when exiting the roundabout. WHY?

Ashley, the clip where the ambulance just went through the red light from stationary made me think of a question for you. If you come across traffic lights and after a bit you realise they are not working correctly and missing out on showing a green light for the road you are on, how long do you (personally) wait before proceeding with caution?
I was out for a drive in the sun this morning, lots of cyclists out on one particular B-road and the amount of people not leaving them space was unbelievable. At least two numpties decided to squeeze past as I was approaching in the opposite direction.
A lot of cyclists run dash cams and it is quite easy to report a close pass with video evidence to the Police. Hopefully those two numpties will be getting a brown envelope on their doormat shortly.
I commented something similar, I feel this behaviour is on the increase.
7:30 is it possible to tell if you will be able to clear that yellow box before you enter it? It looks like you wouldn't be able to see if the end of the box was blocked before you are a good way through it, going over the bridge.

4:31 - 4:40 - the Welsh road at Hooton lights used to be on my commute from 1980 - 1987, people were jumping the lights back then (I think the lights were actually installed around that time, vague memories of there being no lights when I had my Ford Capri and first started using it for work around 1980.

Recently had a week in Manchester with work. Quickly learnt to wait a second before pulling off at green lights as there was always at least one car running the lights from the other direction.

Encountered one of those "lane 2" drivers, this time in a Qashqai, but more often seems to be Kia and similar SUVs, a couple of days back - sat there in a 40 doing 30 in lane 2, then when it changed to NSL passed some lorries barely faster than the lorries were going, moved over to lane 1 probably because they thought I wanted to pass them, but then matched me for acceleration all the way up to a good 70 then kept accelerating until they were half a car length ahead of me at which point they slammed on the brakes and dropped back behind me, then sat out in lane 2 for a few minutes at 70, then randomly sped up and passed me and continued at about 80MPH until they were a couple of hundred meters ahead of me then continued to sit in lane 2 with their speed dropping off until I'd nearly caught up with them when they randomly put a spurt on again. Shortly after lane 2 was closed due to an accident and they were late noticing and actually sped up again approaching and if it wasn't for me reading the situation and holding back they'd have had nowhere to go. Bizarre behaviour. (That isn't even going into how randomly they were driving in heavy traffic through the town before that).
At a couple of points I'm pretty sure they were playing with their phone, but don't think it explains it all.

Hi Ashley good instructions as ever. Just a thought for more content why don,t you get a tape measure and show the distance that should be left for a bicycle pass by a car better still cut a piece of timber to that length then ask your pupils . What they think.

That car in the second lane at 5:52 isn't doing anything wrong? It's not a duel carriage way so it's not an "overtaking" lane. Willing to be told I'm wrong but that's what I understood 🤷

7:11 too many of them do that to be honest! One ran me at a set of lights (I used the right lane to go straight ahead like I usually do if they’re traffic because I think it’s better for the traffic to be split between lanes) so I obviously moved back in because I wasn’t planning to break the speed limit. They were obviously speeding with no lights or sirens, then when they got to the end of the road and saw the red light, they put the lights on to clear the red lights at the roundabout then turned them off! Definitely makes me think more negatively about blue lights now, which is a shame.
And just to add, it’s not like they were in need of something like fuel or in a rush to get to a hospital, straight ahead at the roundabout they turned the lights on just to run the reds, there was a fuel station. And they turned right (I was going straight) which had no correlation with a hospital.
Some of these drivers should think about how that looks to the public, I still think about that one being needlessly aggressive, speeding and impatient. It’s scary to think anybody’s lives could be in their hands with that kind of behaviour and attitude.
About so many people not giving cyclists space, I think people view us in such a negative light. I was cycling out on some country lanes and had a van blast past me, there was a runner on the other side of the road shortly after and the van slowed right down for them and passed super wide and slow
It's perpetuated by some drivers taking to social media to demonstrate contempt for all cyclists.

I had an idiot overtake Friday evening then immediately the brake lights were on and they stopped to let someone out, I'm just glad I've got good brakes otherwise I'd have gone straight into the back of them

4:57 the motorcyclist ignoring the red lights. I hadn't witnessed such myself until very recently and then saw it twice within the space of at most one week. I expect to continue seeing it now - much like ever since I first witnessed and commented about someone turning right off a main road into a side road without indicating last year, and I've lost count of how many times I've seen it since (thankfully not a huge number of times but I'm not even remotely surprised to see it now).

I saw two numpties yesterday stuck in the middle of a four way junction because the'd both gone through on red and had to stop for the vehicles coming from their left
Regarding the cyclist passing distance, I ride regularly with a group and have noticed a good number of drivers do give good space, but I have also noticed that some of the overtakes are terrible and dangerous with cars pulling out or tailgating out before bends or in front of oncoming vehicles, to the point where the oncoming vehicle has to almost stop to avoid collision. I would say that this behaviour is definitely on the increase.
The ambulance at 6:53 is waiting at the yellow box, it has already cleared a (presumably) green light, and is now doing "proceed with caution" - as long as it can see clearly then it is a legitimate move.
Even if that's true, shouldn't you keep the box clear, i.e. not drive in if you can't exit?

We'd usually call behavior like that "entitled". But displaying such entitled behavior and breaking rules around other people that follow those rules _is_ rude towards everyone who follows the rules.
In principle ambulances can go through the red light even if they don't have lights and sirens on. I don't know how good visibility was at that junction so can't say how safe it was, but it is a legal manoeuvre
Only when attending an emergency, in which case, as a minimum, the blue lights would be on. This is why some forces fit steady blue lights to their vehicles, so they can demonstrate it was being used for an emergency when caught by red light cameras.
Why are youtube directing us to product placement warning pages before we are able to open this? It is happening more and more recently. Is stating the bleeding obvious necessary? Ashley is open about it and I am able as as an adult to deal with it. I am more concerned with looking something up on Google and being bombarded on youtube with adverts related to my searches being put at the front of all the postings I watch.

The ad standards people insist that if a product is promoted in a video they're has to be a product placement earning at the start, so don't blame Ash (or any other channel) for this. Tom Scott did a video on this some time ago
4:45 Sad thing is, his observations and awareness seemed to be very good... as he blatantly crossed a red light.
Hopefully he'll mature a bit, calm down and also retain that level of awareness before he ends up as a red smear on the bonnet of a car he DIDN'T see.
His awareness is focused on pedestrians: he's looking for smartphones to snatch. He can cover more ground in his search if he doesn't "waste" time hanging around at lights...

5:54 a) they are trying to stop you passing, but b) you are sat so close up behind them they can't actually change back into lane 1 as you are stopping them doing so....
Rather than reporting red light jumpers yourself, put one layer of administration in place by having viewers send in when and where clips and packaging them off monthly to the different force's police liaison. Then if you get come back from anyone, you can say not all clips are acted upon so the situation in question must have had elevated risk, so points and fine dar far far better than remembering the day somebody went flying over the car you drove into them. In short, don't go alone, take us with and make a greater impact with less exposure yourself. I always was a coward, until there be no other choice.

I notice you have a ton of clips of people red light jumping, is this inactive of the general driving in your area? it's very sad to see, and it's quite dangerous. even though I haven't seen many red light jumpers here, cause of your videos I now look both ways even on green, I'd rather not risk it
am I the only one who thinks that the amber light time is too short and should use a kinematic equation instead of being standardised to 3 seconds at every single junction?
It's blown up since Coronavirus all across Australia. I assume the same happened in the UK in general too. People's attitudes changed to much more selfish, plus with hardly anyone on the road for about a year, it became much safer to just ignore rules since you might only see 4 or 5 other drivers in a trip you'd normally see 100.
And despite having been back to normal for about 2.5 years now, they're still behaving like they're the only ones out there.

I think the Ambulance had stopped in the hatched area after being stuck going through the lights and just completed his manoeuvre when the crossing was clear. It did look as though it was quite far forward and the traffic behind it didn't take up any slack if there was any after it had moved. So I don't think it's as guilty as you are making out.
just something to point out, not sure if you are aware of these facts, regarding reporting red light jumps to the police. It has to be reported within 7 days (might be 14) because the police only have a certain window to take action. Also, not that this is a readon not to, they generally tell you not to upload it to social media
2:35 Genuine question, because I'm not a cyclist but I always overtake them as if they are the width of a car in these circumstances: why does the cyclist hug the left-hand side? It's like they're inviting vehicles to share lane 1 with them. I don't get it.
Lack of experience, training, understandably fearful of vehicles, and the agro they get if they ride away from the kerb or take primary position. You can't blame somebody for wanting to avoid conflict even if ironically it can invite close passes.

As a motorcyclist I really do think they shouldn't allow learner riders to use their vehicle for work / business, I know it might allow you to spend more time getting better at riding, but in reality its just a lot of people not wanting to pay for proper training and just riding however they like.
Well 12:24 i left my tail lift on the floor and went to drive off before now. It had been a long day.😅
Regarding clip at 5:30. Maybe I've read it wrong but if I'm turning right on a one way road, and the speed limit is 40mph and I'm doing 40mph, why should I have to keep in the first lane? I think it would be more dangerous to move into the second lane at the last minute.
That was the thing, the car wasn’t turning right at the lights but was remaining in lane 2 for no good reason. They are the type of driver that will merge onto a dual carriageway or motorway and head straight into lane 2 regardless of traffic and wait until close to their exit before trying to get back into lane 1.
The drivers are situationally unaware of what is going on around them and if they have a long line of cars behind them will be firm in their belief they are doing nothing wrong as they are within the speed limit.

This particular instance didn't feature a right turn. The street bore right at this point in which case it is deemed to be straight.
Having said that I've no problem with drivers opting for lane two provided they are driving in speed restricted areas. A convincing case can only be made for conventional "lane discipline" (keep to the left unless passing) in faster multi-lane roads where there are longer uninterrupted straight stretches and consequently fewer conflict situations. Within the city choosing an outer lane will always be influenced by such factors as stop-start behaviour of other traffic including busses, traffic lights and roundabouts. Maybe it is time traffic law was clarified.
@@smilerbob What my point was, he didn't need to turn right at the second set of lights. The road markings tells you that you can turn right or carry on. Who's to say he wasn't going to turn right later down the road. When I'm in that situation and I want to turn right, I get into the right lane as soon a possible, even if it means I go through 20 sets of traffic lights. If it's a 30mph road and he is doing 30mph, I can't see the problem.
@@nuntius1933 If there were a sign telling you to keep left, that would be different but there wasn't. The road markings tell you to use any lane to go straight on, in which case the driver did just that. He's not interfering with anyone, he's not broke any law.

7:00 - the ambulance may have just been assigned to an emergency , at which point they are exempted from waiting for traffic signals . Blue lights or sirens are NOT required , so please don't make assumptions when you do not know the facts . Since you aren't an emergency response driver , you probably don't know that . In many cases a 'silent response' can be indicated . Absence of blue lights or sirens does NOT indicate that the vehicle is not responding to an emergency .
those guys ballyed up with no helmets or safety clothing on that bike look like they consider themselves hard. Just the sort the nurses delight in bringing the disinfectant and scrubbing brush to to clean out the grit from the road rash, I've had it done in my youth, believe me it's total agony and the nurses have little sympathy.
First thing I did when it had all healed was to buy proper protection that didn't ride up when sliding down the road.
She's right in that it's rude but it's the entitlement that breeds the rudeness. There are far too many entitled people in this world and more of them are driving on the roads.
Driving is becoming increasingly more of a chore than anything else.
I was once driving down a one way street in my town when an idiot decided to turn in as I was turning right at the end. Instead of moving he decided to argue with me and a pedestrian who was crossing when him and myself pointed out it was one way. He eventually moved on after a few choice passing words. Entitled numpties on the roads.
The bloke with the door open... I've done that more than once. Easily done when you have a pile of things to get out, and your mind is elsewhere. The annoying thing in my case... Just like him, its usually the driver's door I leave open, but we park on the driveway with the door facing the house. I have no idea how I miss that. 🤷
I was expecting the truck that came past to knock the door off. Leaving it wide open like that on a busy road was a bit more than being absent minded!
With regards to distance I have a little poem that takes 4 seconds to recite.

That Ford in the second clip had ample time to actually overtake if they didn't want to be behind a learner drive. As soon as they indicated left though it was so obvious what they were going to pull. Awful.
