A belated tribute for Il Supremo's 101st birthday (Franco Corelli was born April 8, 1921), and an early Easter treat.
With English subtitles and the original Italian text on screen.
Recorded at the Teatro alla Scala on 7 December 1963.
The 100+ photos illustrating the performance are the work of Scala's in-house photographer, Erio Piccagliani. (Some were taken during rehearsals, so the costumes/hair are different here and there.)

Cavalleria rusticana (Italian for "rustic chivalry") is an opera in one act by Pietro Mascagni to an Italian libretto by Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci, adapted from an 1880 short story of the same name and subsequent play by Giovanni Verga. Considered one of the classic verismo operas, it premiered on 17 May 1890 at the Teatro Costanzi in Rome.
Place: A 19th-century Sicilian village
Time: Easter morning
Before the action takes place, the young villager Turiddu returned from military service to find out that his fiancée Lola had married the carter Alfio while he was away. In revenge, Turiddu seduced Santuzza, a young woman in the village. As the opera begins, Lola, overcome by her jealousy of Santuzza, has begun an adulterous affair with Turiddu.

A great classic performance- it must be said that there is something indefinable in having an all Italian cast in this opera- that sense of authenticity of it being the singer's native language. And great artists like this are a vanishing breed. With each generation we get further and further away from the world that created this work, and the artists necessary to inhabit it. Thank you for your work and posting it; it is brilliant!
Exzellente Aufnahme. Traumhafte Besetzung, Corelli war und ist Turiddu. Ich habe die Cavalleria schon oft gesehen, aber Franco ist unübertroffen.

Questo è fantastico! Eravamo lì nell'epoca d'oro dell'opera a questo spettacolo di apertura alla Scala! Che cast!!! Corelli al suo meglio. Si identifica totalmente con il personaggio di Turiddu. All'inizio è leggero, giocoso nella voce, poi nel grande duetto è impaziente, teso, senza argomenti contro Santuzza... Poi, improvvisamente, il vento della morte lo colpisce, si rompe, il suo senso di responsabilità si infiamma e poi è addio...

Thank you for this gem. I love this opera (my first opera in my life, listened on radio with my mother when I was six years old), I love the cast, all superb, but Corelli is mine for ever. No need to say how excellent they are, but I have to mention the perfect staging and costumes, since this important part of operas don't exist any more with today's so called "progressive" directors, which serve the audience with ugly, sterile, without connections to the libretto staging and costumes. Everything is sad on the stage, and if we add the poor singing and acting, pretty soon the theaters will be empty. They must go back to traditional staging.
I sooo agree. Modern stagings are based on the mistaken assumption that these operas are already well-known and thus boring to everyone, so they need to be revamped to make them appealing to a "modern audience". In this way, modern productions manage to appeal to noone: those who love opera never tire of the beautiful and the authentic, and those who are new to it, nowadays have almost no chance of witnessing that real magic that could make them fans of the genre - through the experience of visual and vocal perfection.
I agree. I have lost count of how many times I’ve seen this opera, which is a great favourite of mine. This was a great production but I remember once seeing a version where Alfio the carter appeared on stage driving a posh car instead of his horse-drawn cart. There were other changes too. It quite spoilt it for me. This is happening all the time. Another example was the staging of Rigoletto in a Las Vegas casino!

Just listened to/watched this again. The opera is a masterpiece, and, in my opinion, just as Calaf belongs to Corelli, so does Turiddu. No one can touch him.
We can say that about most of his work - Tosca, Il Trovatore...It is impossible to hear and watch anyone else. He was a gorgeous man with the most extraordinary diamond in his throat. Nobody, in my personal view, has come close since.

On RUclips there is a clip of a rehearsal of Corelli and Simionato in the scene where Santa begs Turiddu not to reject her. It becomes violent and it's quite brutal. Brilliantly done- of course!

Corelli and Simionato are excellent! I saw Franco sing this role in a new production at the Met with Tucker singing the Canio in Pagliacci.
Those performances from 1970 are now on RUclips, both from February 7, 1970.

A real exciting performance & all 3 of the principals are totally suited to their roles. This is a particular good part for Guelfi & he repeated it successfully in the studio with Von Karajan a couple years later.

И очень красивый тембр!!!
И Гуэльфи очень хорош. Корелли, кстати, очень любил с ним вместе выступать. Он был один из немногих коллег, которому Корелли на сцене мог посмотреть в глаза.
Корелли - нарцисс. С его ростом выступать в туфлях с высоким каблуком - это совсем не комильфо.
Вокал Симионато для любителей чистого искусства, а не стаи глоров, которые будут превозносить своего кумира по поводу и без.
В конкретной постановке она перепела Корелли по всем возможным параметрам несмотря на очевидную разницу в возрасте. У 53-летней меццо (партия Сантуцци изначально написана для сопрано - молодой дамы) и техника получше, и дыхание поровнее, и интонация более подходящая и в ноты (по высоте и в такт музыке) она также попадает более четко.

You can always spent your time far more productively, by posting your own videos about Simionato, you can even cut out all of the pesky co-stars, and then it wouldn’t be necessary for you to project your own psychopathies unto others.

Is Santuzza not a soprano role? Was this an unusual casting?
Yes, it is a dramatic soprano role but many mezzos with an extended upper range can sing it and Simionato was one of the most talented mezzos of the last century. Her Decca recording i as very good if only Mario Del Monaco had emphasized the more lyrical aspects, but she is excellent.
@@johnpickford4222 Thank you for your kind reply. If I am not mistaken, Del Monaco had a vocal ability of loud and louder. But, at least everyone in the theater got their money's worth of glorious sound.
@@DCFunBud Dear DCF, there are many examples here on You Tube of MDM singing with nuance. However, it was NOT a strength of his and he abandoned it, after his 1963 almost fatal car accident, except for the Otello arias. Surprisingly, Corelli also had more than his share of poor critical reviews from his Met performances, stating that he sang in poor taste to the rafters, and was a force onto himself, holding on to high notes forever. However, Corelli with his warm sounding voice and complete vocal arsenal was very popular with the public and was known as Prince of Tenors, and Mr. Soldout during his 15 years at the Met. The critics never criticized his great voice, but the manner in which he sang.
