    As someone who struggles with faith vs. religion, and after listening to Tyler's Beats interview, I've come up with this perpective. I think Dema represents controlling institutions which demand blind faith and condemn free thought. The Nico and the Niners video shows the bishops making and worshiping their artificial lights that are cold and dim, but very safe and contained. In contrast, the lights the banditos are carrying are open flames that give real light and heat, but are potentially dangerous. Maybe part of Tyler's struggles are with his mind wanting the freedom to ask any questions, but also wanting the safe familiarity of religion which tells him what to believe and think. I appreciate your great questions about why Nicolas Bourbaki, and I am trying to get my mind around that too.

    The name Bourbaky comes from a French general who lose 63.000 people in a French war in 1800s. Twenty one pilots' name comes from All My Sons, a film about a man who sells on purpose defective warplanes and kills 21 people, including his son. Bourbaki and TØP have things in common: in both the origins of the names there's an attempt to hide a failure, Bourbaky group studied set theories and define the symbol Ø, which means a void set with no elements, the same symbol used by TØP. In the Bourbaky group there are 9 member, the same for Bishops.

      weird theory, but maybe the album is called trench because of the french war in the 1800s?? i know it was more of a 1900s thing, but trench warfare was becoming the hot new way to fight wars around that time (learned that from my ap world history class; apparently the french and british also fought against germany in WWI with trenches)
      the trench thing could also be a reference to no man's land maybe?? because how trench warfare works is that there's a trench, and then another trench- the enemy's trench- a set amount of feet or whatever away from it, and in between in no man's land. its essentially a void of death, complete with fences, barbed wire, and, since everyone has machine guns pointing pretty much anywhere, the moment you try and cross over to the next trench, you get shot from 50 different angles. the no man's land in between those trenches could relate somehow to the ø symbol, since they're both kind of voids with no elements but maybe that's a bit of a stretch.

    There are 9 members of the Bourbaki group... my theory is that Tyler photoshopped the image to include the two missing members so he could use that as his story reference ... just a idea I had. Great video 👍🏻

    Btw, Dema and the blurryface predates the actual Bourbaki group because thats Tyler’s way of giving you more insight. Blurryface is all about toxic cultural messaging like “Gangsters don’t cry” (Boys don’t cry), “Wake up you need to make money”, things of that nature. Its Tyler critiquing society and our ways of life and what we worship and hold up on a pedestal. You should check out Lua James videos on the lore!

  • @ragefreak6969
    @ragefreak6969 6 лет назад +35

    Your video are some of the smartest explanations I’ve seen. I think that the Bourbaki group represents logic and reason. The opposites of blind belief. I think it’s his inability to blindly believe that tortures him. Therefore Blurryface/Nico/Nicolas Bourbaki (logic/reason) will always try to stop him from being the kind of Christian he wants to be. I think that the cyclical story of escape and return to dema is about the cyclical cycle of his losing faith and finding it again. I feel that “Trench” = Doubt. He is in trench because he is in doubt. But would that make Dema and “the city” those places he’s trying to escape...are they the church? Or are they the fame and spotlights?

    • @ragefreak6969
      @ragefreak6969 6 лет назад

      I believe the bishop names were pulled from song lyrics that coincide with the 9 patterns on the blurryface cover art. I think Nico was the only name that didn’t coincide with lyrics so the clique interpreted that name to belong to blurryface. I honestly wonder if we named blurryface Nico. Tyler had already named him. Blurryface

      I'm literally spending hours in my room or wherever thinking about ittt, and the main question is what is trench and dema, we found out almost everything about Clancy, how he wants to escape, banditos, etc. but what does it all represent? Is Dema the city of religiousness? Is Dema the city of organized religiousness? Or is it a city of losing religion?Does Dema have anything to do with religion? It is quite confusing to me, but Wheatmaker did a great job in theorizing about the Nicolas Bourbaki thing which may just be what Trench is all about.

    This is a long shot but my guess is that Nicolas Bourbaki represents the idea of overcoming death by this group of mathematicians (and this is what fascinated Tyler). Humans die, but what if we can create an alias, become an ideal... then Nicolas Bourbaki would become inmortal... I think this represents “around” as you said previously that “Above” represents faith... “if I keep moving, they wont know” could mean “If we constantly change the mathematicians in the group, nobody will know... It will still be Nicolas Bourbacki publishing”... “I’ll morph to someone else” could mean “I will become that ideal, that ghost”

    I think you just overcompicate some things. Twenty One Pilots didn't used the null symbol because of just fun. The / sign means insecurities in the logo, because it's the one always marked with red, and red is the colour of Blurryface, the colour of depression and the colour of "the dark parts of our thoughts". Since the Bourbaki group created this symbol, Tyler named the bishop, who created his insecurities after the group, aka Nico. In the Dema universe, Nico made Tyler depressed and insecure, just like in our universe, the Bourbaki group created the sign.

    I’ve always thought that the Bishops might have something to do with chess as apposed to just religion. I was looking around for some insight when I found this quote on chess.com by a user named endgame0. I just want to give them credit since I don’t know where they found the quote. The discussion on the website was about how the chess pieces got their names. “The bishops, in today’s terms, were a bench of politicians gathered to dictate the law & set the norms. But, at that time, the bishops were found falling far short from fulfilling any standard. Frankly speaking, they were two-faced type of men, very manipulative. This is why their movements on the chess board are not horisontal nor vertical, they are diagonal mirroring their snake-like moves.” Sound familiar?

    If u look at the ninth book published by the bourbaki group, (cause there are nine bishops) it is on spectral theory. I did some research, and spectral theory is described as things beyond a square matrix. That square matrix could represent the universe we know. Tyler could be trying to say that theories beyond our knowledge are important. just a theory. please feel free to add to this theory or prove me wrong.

    Leave the city. When he is trying to leave the city, he just wants to have something to believe. He says the fire is running out, only embers left, his hands singed. Which is kinda like (I think) he is running out of faith and science. Almost like leaving the city would be going under, and above

      Blurryface is basically the physical embodiment of all Tyler’s (and everyone else’s) insecurities. Whether that be anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts/actions, etc. In the music videos where you see Tyler taking on the role of Blurryface, it usually represents and speaks his doubts and second thoughts on certain subjects. At least this is my understanding.
      By “Didn’t he say he was blurryface?” It could just be the paint he was explaining and what it means to him...? Other than that I don’t really know what to say.

    The bourbaki group named themselves after nico = blurryface. we know they named themselves after gen. charles bourbaki, who made a mistake that cost a lot of soldiers' lives and tried to kill himself. what gen. bourbaki represents is what blurryface represents.
    Sorry if you like already explained that in the video but it like just clicked.
    Twenty One Pilots also named themselves after an instance where somebody made a mistake that cost a lot of lives and then tried to kill themselves, which gives me more questions like did Twenty One Pilots name the band after Nico too then? Is the bourbaki group some sort of mathy parallel to twenty one pilots?

    • @TheFunnySound1
      @TheFunnySound1 6 лет назад

      Michelle F Charles Bourbaki relates to where the name Twenty Øne Piløts cane from. The name Twenty one pilots came from a play where people made false airplane parts. And the person who was in charge was to embarrassed to tell or face the fact that he did something wrong, so he decided to stay quiet and not say anything. That was until the 21 pilots ended up dying because of the false parts. And the person in charge too tried to commit suicide to try to get away with the fact that it was his fault. Relate that to the Charles Bourbaki story and it’ll make a lot of sense
