Such a breath of fresh air to hear you mention, dress in what suits your own individual style regardless of the price tag and labels. I am so totally in agreement with that because it's very obvious when a person tries too hard and it feels forced. Sometimes it actually detracts from the entire outfit. Wanting to impress others with brand names & labels is certainly not my thing but that's only my own opinion, each to one's own personal taste & style!!!

That woman was jealous of you; of your external beauty and your kind gentle spirit Jess. I think all women, especially young women, need to hear your message. As a 57 year old woman I find it sad that so many young women don't have confidence and feel insecure about the way they look and feel about themselves. It seems the inherent beauty of their youth passes them by and they don't appreciate all they have. It was so inspiring hearing you talk about your epiphany at the tender age of 18. Powerful stuff and it's served you well by the looks of it. Fiona x

Hi Fiona, it's really sad isn't it. I've heard women say they can't bear school drop off because the clique group of women who make them feel inferior:/ No-one should ever feel like that, and certainly not once we've all got past teenage years! I really hope if people take anything from my videos it's a little confidence in themselves more than anything else. Happy Sunday Fiona, and thanks so much again for watching x

Thank you for this inspiring video! In my twenties I lacked everything! I admired friends who could dress in a way I thought I could not do. I envied collegaes who were not shy to give their opinion in meetings. When I turned 40 a neighour asked my my age on the day of my birthday. When I gold here it was 40 she told me: "I don't know how you do it, but I would love to have some of it". That's the day I looked a little bit longer in the bathroom mirror and asked myself who I am. I am 62 now, know what I like, even on a dull day I like to look good. It took a while but indeed: 'fake it till you make it'!

Loved your video and all your helpful comments, I totally agree. I have always believed that it is your imperfections that make you beautiful. How boring it would be if we were all identical. I have always brought my two girls up to say that it is lovely to be beautiful on the outside but far more important to be beautiful on the inside. I remember my daughter said to me recently when I asked what her type was. Was that it was difficult, people who she at first glance thought beautiful, the more she got to know them , in some cases, the uglier they got. And people she at first hadn’t noticed, on more conversations, suddenly became more beautiful. So is lesson to us all from a girl of 20 years old. Don’t judge a book by its cover and only radiate out into the world, what you would like to come back and you won’t go far wrong. Thank you for your lovely video and sharing your experiences, you are always a pleasure to watch. Speaking as a Mother, I’m sure yours is very proud. Wishing you lots of happiness, Lisa, Aimee and Anna 🌈

As a woman who constantly hears things like “why are you so dressed up?” It’s so important to encourage young women to own their style no matter what anyone else thinks. No one who is happy and owning their style is going to criticise anyone else.

Truly the one EVERYone needs to watch. Trying to fit in and be someone I am not has always left me feeling inadequate and as if I am falling short. Throughout the ages we are constantly evolving and learning. Lockdown has helped me in some respects as I needed a breather to reconnect with myself and re-establish who I am and where I am going looking forward. As I am 50 next year I am trying to negotiate the the changes and really focus on health, wellbeing and happiness. Much love, we've got this!! Xx

Hi Naomi, thank you so much for watching and getting in touch:) I think 'fitting in' is overrated, being original makes us all special. I tend to warm to people like that too, I'm not one for being in the 'cool' gang , it's all a bit mean girls for me. Surround yourself with goodness and it makes for a much happier and positive life. It sounds like the enforced reset has really helped you gather your thoughts, it's felt good hasn't it. Sending lots of love and hugs on your exciting new wellbeing journey Naomi x

You are the loveliest. I think the story you told demonstrates how important words are. What would it have cost that woman to try and get to know you and build you up instead of break you down? Especially when you were young and trying to find your feet in a new environment. That being said, it is wonderful that you were able to use that pain you felt to drive personal growth and it's now just one of the many stories that have gone into building a strong woman, who cultivates her confidence from the inside out and uses it to uplift other women.

Hey Jess, 100% agree, it's so important to be true to ourselves and in our style. It sounds easy enough but it takes time to discover who you really are, i just turned 40 and still trying to figure it out. I will be sharing your video with my daughter when she is old enough, your words of wisdom; and something i wish i knew when i was in my 20s/30s. I'm at an exciting juncture of life right now (I hope) with having made the decision to retire early from my current place of employment after dedicating 20 years to it but I truly needed to remove myself from an environment that has been such a toxic influence and which has had a very negative effect on my sense of self-worth and confidence, despite being highly accomplished personally and professionally. So eloquently said and so true. I love your post, it’s so genuine and helpful. I’ve always loved fashion but as a young girl my family had the funds to buy new clothes for four kids. My grandmother was a seamstress in a wealthy area and would bring up bags of very expensive “hand me downs”, and I would make these amazing outfits out of them. Even though I couldn’t wear the cool outfits all my friends were wearing, I felt confident that what I wore was unique! I’ve tried to instill your belief in my two granddaughters- to be yourself and have fun with your clothes! Thank you.

And I love the idea of that uniqueness shining through, better than any trend led piece in my humble opinion:) My childhood was filled full of hand me downs too, not only with an older sister but an older cousin too! I'd find I'd have the same dress in my closet for years just a bigger version! But it certainly makes you appreciate clothes when you get older:) Happy Sunday Maryellen and thank you again for getting in touch x

Words of wisdom but said with such compassion. Your point about encouraging other women was so motivating and in ways more proactive for me personally .I have no difficulty admiring/complimenting small children but am afraid that with an adult it appears like there is an angle.
When friends moving on leave you feeling down because the time you invested in that friendship seems wasted some will respond with stop thinking of others and focus on yourself but it's nice to be nice and a kindness from a stranger or acquaintance is such a welcome surprise. Its about striking the balance.
Your friends and family are so fortunate to have you in their lives.
I will quote you moving forward and bring joy to someone else's life.To quote you: ' you're doing great...'.xx

I think lots of women are the same. Not that you don't think nice things about other people but perhaps are too shy to say them aloud. What you said about put downs is so true. For a lot of women, those put downs come from their parents, and especially their mothers. I know it sounds awful but I will never forget some of those carping, nitpicking criticisms and now there will never be any more. It’s as though a weight has rolled off my shoulders; I dumped the dowdy clothes I wore to visit her the day she passed away.
PS The Sezane boots do look lovely. Western boots are so comfy, please let us know how you get on with them if you do treat yourself - I’m a half size so would be grateful for input as returns can be a faff if you’re in the sticks.

Absolutely be true to yourself. I'm 54 and I wear shorts and mini skirts because I want to! I've got a great pair of legs and nobody is going to stop me!
You should wear what makes you feel good and not what you're "expected" to wear.
Fashion very rarely suits everyone. We all have different shapes so realistically something that might be the height of fashion might not look good on you.

    • @FashionStyleEdit
      @FashionStyleEdit  3 года назад

Good for you Lesley!! You know if I thought I had a great pair of legs I'd absolutely be doing the same! And I totally agree, trends come and go and all of them will not suit everyone each season. This Autumn Winter for example I've totally discounted fringing from my wardrobe, it might have been all over the catwalk but I look a bit of a plonker in the trend! Always, unapologetically wear what you love and what you believe suits you:) x

What a wonderful video, Jess. Your beautiful self shines through!
I liked what you said about the women who seem to disappear in expensive, ‘labels’ clothing. When I was young, my mum and I used to love to watch the Oscar Awards. The fashion was so much fun - everyone chose their own outfits, and revealed something about their true selves in doing so. There were glorious moments, and jaw-dropping disasters! Breath-taking ensembles and ‘oh dear’ ones. We loved it! You never knew what you’d see next! Now it’s so homogenous, with big labels, stylists, and such competition to outshine. So unimaginative and disappointing. Your advice to be yourself resonates deeply in these times. That’s what fashion should be all about! Thanks so much ❤️

'Oh not at your age' was a thing possibly in the 80s but these days thankfully we've all realised that's just a silly and outdated idea. Thanks so much for the reminder Jess! I've always been a "individual" or "quirky" dresser and as I face turning 50 very soon I'm trying not to lose that sense of "me" yet be a little more age appropriate. After working in the music, tv and film industries for years I was just seen as the quirky "arty" type. Now I'm very much a soccer Mum etc it's harder to strike the balance. I'm never wearing the same as any of the other Mums which used to give me confidence because it was me. Now I'm not sure. I love it! I love that you aren't a "brand pusher". There are soooo many luxury brands out there that are making really ugly and unflattering clothes. People fall all over this stuff. I dont get it. I think the absurdity of couture and luxury fashion is almost mocking to those who have money but no sense of style. I don't fall for it. One of my favorite shops often has sales of $10 for tops, but its really cute stuff! I try not to buy it unless i really intend to wear it, so as not to be wasteful, but i have no problem buying cheaper items if the fabric feels good and i really do like the piece. You can be in fashion at any price point, you just need to stay true to what you like and what flatters you best.

    • @FashionStyleEdit
      @FashionStyleEdit  4 года назад +1

Haha so true! And they stick a big fancy label on it and people think that's 'style'? Not for me I'm afraid. I do see the quality in lots of designers, and often pieces can be like works of art, but I'd never buy something 'because' of what the label reads:/ Totally agree with you lovely, true style is not what you spend but how you wear it that counts. Happy Sunday lovely x

First you look absolutely stunning! The white blouse, gold jewelry and your eye makeup, love it all. Secondly, thank you for this talk, I needed to hear it. I lost my job beginning of this year, first time ever and it was a shock. At first I took care of myself, but as the months got on, less so. I’ve been making my self small and invisible and of course guarantee had helped staying away from everything. I’m slowly turning my situation better financially, but my emotional side needs to strengthen. I have wonderful supporting family, so I have nothing to worry about, but still I’ve stumbled. It’s time to be me again. ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Eija, thanks for watching lovely. So sorry to hear you lost your job, that can really knock your confidence I know. And I'm sure there's lots of people in the same boat at the minute. Please don't hide yourself away, you have the strength to pull yourself back. No job is worth losing that little bit of you for and it's sounds like with a wonderful family having your back your on the right track:) I know when my Mum died I literally wanted to hide under the duvet and make the world just fizzle away but at some point I just forced myself up, into the bath, put some nice clothes on and essentially pretended to be okay. A bit like my 'fake it till you make it' theory from when I was younger. Eventually I realised I wasn't pretending anymore, I was okay. Getting 'you' back will feel wonderful and I promise you it's totally within your grasp. Sometimes we just have to fight a little to get it back. Sending you big hugs my lovely and oodles of strength x

This was my first clothing purchase this year, so I’m so happy to break this lack mentality. I’m home alone for few days so it’s a perfect time to concentrate on self care and happiness. 💕much love, Eija

This is brilliant Jess, I couldn't agree more with everything you said. Learning and loving your own style is a journey and there are times in your life when your wardrobe calls for a little adjustments here and there. I've just turned 48 this week and I'm at that junction again. I love clothes but want them to be a reflection of me rather than just fitting into the current trend and in my opinion what a great time to be a woman of any age - we should have the confidence to dress how we want to dress and wear what we feel comfortable! Xx

It amazes me how something that happened to you in your teens can resonate in that a few years back I was going through certain time of my life that shook my confidence that I only just started to come into and it was someone I held very dear to my heart and looked up to as the sister I did not have, they was encouraging me for a long time see what they saw that I am good looking women I only came to that conclusion 4 years ago I'm in my late 40s it's been a journey of self discovery but when it did finally click that person turned on me it felt like a rug was pulled right from under me but in so doing I have learned that you have to learn to love and rely on that inner voice that we tend to ignore most of our lives that is for me my confidence telling you are doing fine yes you are looking stunning today I like how you are rocking that dress that colour looks awesome on you I now don't need someone else validation to feel good in my own skin if I want to dress as if I'm going to a garden party for instance on the rare occasions we have good weather in the UK 😌 and I'm just going to Tesco then I do so it is a part of me I love fashion I have all my life and I will continue to thank you for your honesty words they did resonate stay blessed because you are 🙏😊

Bravo Jess 👌... loved that, I can relate so much, when we moved from Scotland ( age 18) I was so nervous, because of my accent I was constantly teased ( put politely).. it took me ages to at least fake confidence but it does work, even now , I tend to talk constantly when nervous. Having a child with autism has made me more confident as I fight so hard for him and forget my own shyness. I now have my own style, I think, and love your videos and styling tips, your confidence is wonderful, you are quite inspiring. Hope you’re having a great weekend. Love Pauline ps.. still have a Scottish 😉

Hi Pauline, hope you're well lovely and thanks for watching:) That must have been hard moving at 18 and upping and leaving friends but thank goodness you had that 'fake confidence' tactic in your back pocket too. It really works! I'm totally with you on fighting hard for your kids. It's amazing what parents can overcome once little ones come along isn't it. And baby groups can be harder to walk into than any high flying meeting! Haha! Big hugs lovely, love that you fight away the shyness for your boy, that will have such a positive effect on him:) x

Wow, this video is good for women to see and hear. I’m 51 and I’m trying to experiment with fashion more than I used to. My friends are very casual. Sometimes I feel like I’m trying too hard or I think others will think I am or that I’m trying to get attention which I’m really not trying to do. I’ve always been very into clothes ever since I was a child. I’m still trying to reconcile this in my head. Now that I’m a little older, I definitely have more confidence than ever before, so I’m just trying to enjoy the process. I totally agree that women should try to build each other up. I find some women always have something critical to say about everybody. This makes me feel very sad. Thank you for your kind words and your candor. I always look forward to your videos. You have such beautiful style! Stay safe Jess! ❤️😊

How lovely and well said Jess... I moved overseas to follow my husband and after 15 years and two children we got divorced and he moved away. Things are never as tough as we make out they'll be but I know in the moment it's very hard to see that. I've really found my 'fake confidence' really helps, tell her it's like acting. She could pretend she's more confident at college and then eventually something just clicks and you realise you're not pretending anymore, you just feel fine. Lovely. I’m senior leader in a corporate role that hates the TMLewin (pencil skirt, jacket and shirt) look that woman think they have to subscribe to. I’ve made beautiful dresses work for me in the corporate world.

That sounds perfect Hailey and good for you:) I hate conforming to what people 'think' I should be, or wear, or behave. Life is way too short for any of that nonsense! x

Thank You for these really wonderful and wise tips. They are so true to feeling good about yourself and having more confidence. I tend to worry about getting older, but I love what you said about not worrying about age and just wear what makes you feel good inside. Thank You so much, Jess. Your advice has helped me a lot.

Wonderful video Jess but it also brought a tear to my eye. I've always struggled with my self image, spent my whole life feeling self conscious and have never really found my style. I pick up clothes in shops that I love but put them back cos I don't think I could wear them and buy something more conservative. Strangely I think the lockdown had helped a little as its put things into perspective but I wonder if I can keep the mindset going when things are more normal and life takes over again. Your lovely words are in my head and I shall keep thinking of them and take little steps to change my attitude. You're a star Jess xx

Hey Jo, I'm so sorry hun I seem to have missed your reply:/ I really hope my words are still in your head hun since this video! If in doubt try and look at it as a game. Dare yourself to stand out from the shadows just once and wear something you truly love but usually would say no in fear. What's the worst that can happen? And hopefully when you realise nothing bad happens you'll do it again and again! Even if you do get a snarky comment, does it matter? I really try to not let things like that effect my day and I so wish everyone could too. I heard a really interesting quote the other day that most people are fundamentally so self absorbed they barely notice what everyone else is doing let alone wearing! It made me laugh and I do think there's some truth to it. Everyone's worried what everyone thinks of them, a group of women could all being stood together worrying about the same thing! So try it Jo, throw caution to the wind and just have a go, I promise you once you get used to it stepping out from the shadows will be the most liberating feeling:) x

Boy oh boy do I understand you in this episode. Who knew loose baggy clothes would be in style now, when I used them to hide myself when I was younger. Not because I was oversized but because people in my circle then thought I had a ‘Barbie’ shape. To me Barbie was sexy and I didn’t see myself as that so I hid. Then got to college with a boost of self confidence and never looked back.
