  • You may have heard someone day they're and apologist for something, or say that they study apologetics, but what do these words mean? What do they have to do with apologizing? Let's take a look at the root word: apologia!

90s cartoon point: completely in accord with you, and there have been more made in the last decade that belong just as much.
Video game point: ok sure. (I'm trying real hard to understand the appeal ok? Dez and Fox Play helps.)
SW=/=ST point: I think you've got them reversed? Wars is clearly the science fantasy, and Trek for sure is the science fiction.
Politics point: yup, that's just about how it looks like.
Nice PFUDOR face at 2:02 and 3:36
Also, I'm loving these videos so far and look forward to seeing more of them.

If our Christian apologetics comes from the understanding for the ancient Greek word apologia (ἀπολογία) also known as the “defense” then, why and where does the Word of God commands or require us to defend it?
Although, I totally disagree based on numerous verses like (1 Peter 3:15), some Christians believe that “The Truth” does not need to be defended. It stand on its own. This is supposed to be an argument that Christian Apologetics is a pointless exercise.

It's good that you mention 1 Peter 3:15, because when we read Peter calling believers to be prepared to "give an answer" (NIV) or "make a defense" (ESV), Peter, in the Greek, is literally calling believers to be prepared with an "apologian". Peter literally is recommending that believers have some sort of apologetic defense for their faith.

So what I hear you saying is that our English word "apology," where one expresses regret or remorse is not what apologetics is about. Rather, the term “apologetics” means a justification, or an "answer back," or a reason, a rational defense of the Christian faith.
