His answer to what happens when we die has to be one of the most profound and thought provoking answers yet given on this show. Such an amazing man.
All I know is, nothing will ever happen to me again. But I also think he's right.
honestly. caught me off guard there.. i had to pause and sit with that.
Interesting take. I think what he's trying to say is that our consciousness, in some form, is immortal.
i'd agree....except there is nO EASIER QUESTION TO ANSWER.
We ALL know exactly what death is like: it's like 10 years BEFORE You were born.
Whatever that waslike, and what your soul was up to, is what it's like AFTER.
@@jonbongjovi1869 We'll I'd say it's not that easy, but I love your answer too much...thanks, oh bongie-one👏🏼💗✌🏼
I liked his answer to the “what happens when we die” question. He seems like a good person to have a conversation with.
he seems like a good person to have some Psilocybin with
It was a good answer, deep, but more than a little "I don't want to believe it's over."
Listen to his episode on Smartless (podcast)
@@Padidas85 Will do.
He's full of SHIT.
Such a classy actor, from Dead Poets Society to the Before Trilogy and Boyhood, all masterful performances!
He starred in a great horror movie I'm not sure but I think it was called sinister if I'm wrong about the title please reply and let me know what the title is
His character moves his family to a house where the entire family was murdered to write about it and finds some old reel to reel movies and sees what could be best described as a demon and it looks back at him
I wanted to like Boyhood more than I actually did. His performance was really honest, though.
First reformed is his mangum opus
Don't forget Training Day ;)
@@tracy9531 Yes, Sinister is great.
I've always been a fan of Ethan Hawke's work. His pause before answering 'what do you think happens when we die' is quite touching. His answer was beautiful.
😂😂😂 “90% of the clothes I own are from 1992..” 😂😂😂
I can relate
Good to hear he can still fit in them. 😅
Ethan Hawke seems like such an overlooked actor. In his age I see him running a lot of good roles superbly. Think of this man in a western. Would kill it
I swear I've seen him in a Western before.
@@the.shotgun.approachHe was in the remake of The Magnificent Seven. He was probably the best part too.
Good western «In a Valley of Violence» Etan Hawke with John Travolta !
you should read his cowritten graphic novel. it is very western and very badass...
His answer for 'when we die' made me cry. I agree & I hope my dad is ok. Ran out of time to spend in this life before he died. At 50 the word Time bothers me. I know it's running out in this life yet I keep taking it for granted mostly without realizing. Despair is setting in
Damn, you said it, I'm so with ya there 100%. Just hit 52 & that realization & despair keeps kicking my ass, it's just plain hard, I'm tryin to fight it but, damn, it's hard...
😓
Same here, I’m nearing 80…
filips C Movie roles are temporary (has start and end date within a movie) but not the actor who experiences different roles in different movies (life). It is the reason why Ethan said that we (conscious, immortal, nondual, immanent and omnipresent self) cannot die even though the material realm goes through perpetual duality cycles just like time. Karma or cause and effect and reincarnation (birth/death duality cycles of humans) is based on Hindu/Vedic metaphysics which can be validated by logic, double slit quantum experiment and embodied experience. Identification with thoughts and body is just an illusion created by ignorance, wrong assumption that body is the experiencer of 5 senses not the conscious self (which is not the doer) and ego (which creates false sense of i)
I think everybody takes life for granted I try not to anymore because I was in a terrible accident on my parents passed away in it I survive they didn’t so I try not to take it for granted because they were gone in a blink of an eye, life is short and less sometimes we don’t think about that cause every day on earth with your last day.
Man, I'm a huge fan of Ethan Hawke. He is so intelligent and a true student of literature and film.
I like how he makes the blockbuster, then makes a low-budget indie film or two that pushes the boundaries. His range as an actor is astounding.
Second, he was with Uma Thurman. As a man, I have to respect his magnetism. The most captivating woman and actress of my time, and I watched everything Uma was in.
They made beautiful and talented children together. Maya Hawke is a really talented musician and actress in her own right. Even separated with Uma he's being a good father.
Ethan just keeps winning at life because he knows himself, his art, and his family.
What's not to admire?
@H FT Everyone has some degree of creepiness or weirdness.
Such a wonderful genuine human. Worked alongside him in Nova Scotia, and he was lovely.
You are SO lucky!
His answer to the question: where do you think we go after death? was elequent, smart, and thoughtfull...really agree with him and like his answer.
Love Ethan's answers and overall personality!
I love Ethan. Well put sir. You are a gentleman and a scholar.
Thank you so much, Colbert crew for actually DIFFERENTIATING these two Hawke videos using PART 1 and PART 2! Now can you PLEASE keep doing this with ALL OF YOUR MULTI PART INTERVIEW VIDEOS OF YOUR GUESTS?!
Lol that was passionate
@@paganibonda lol u don't know PASSION lol
Damn Ethan that is the deepest answer to that question or almost any other question any other guest has ever answered in the segment…..
Which one? The apples and oranges? Aisle or window?
I am in love ... Ethan's answer on, what he thinks happens after we die, is exactly where I have landed in my beliefs at 50. I never had a star crush on him in the 90s, but every part of, this part 1, pulled me in. Lucky wife of his, having pharamones that are his favorite scent. Whoa. Lol.
Im with ya, sister
that "favorite smell" question really hit me hard. as people we each have an unique smell like our DNA. i am not talking about the perfumes or bath products we use. when we're closer to our loved ones we can sense that smell in our brain. i still remember my first girlfriend's smell that is something i would never forget.
Isn’t it fascinating how our sense of smell triggers “memory” ...
Love the Colbert Questionnaire. Love the Ethan Hawke. It’s gonna be a good day.
Best one who has answered these!
The Questionert is Stephen’s best extra segment. Ethan Hawke so smart and classy ❤️
the true joy in his face about die hard being a christmas movie
I wish I could find a man who felt that honesty and openness was preferable to lies and cheating.
One of the greatest actors of his generation. His consistency throughout his career is unparalleled.
One of the best explanations of what happens after we die.
It's Impossible to... know. Life is too big to put a definition on.
One of the best pieces I’ve ever read is by Ethan. A piece in Rolling Stone magazine some years ago about Kris Kristofferson. ❤️ He’s a fantastic writer.
I know everyone is talking about his profound answer about what happens when we die, but I’m just happy someone finally said Die Hard is their favorite action movie.
HE'S SO THOUGHTFUL AND REAL😭❤️
With Ethan, what you see is what you get. REFRESHING, considering his day job is being other people.
He is aging authentically.
5:36 now that's genuine humility and a sincerely silly gentleman
To be honest I always had an impression of Ethan as somewhat stuck up and full of himself but his answer about what happens when we die really won me over. So humble and deep.
His answer of "what happens when we die?" is very.. Sci-fi. Like somebody can make a movie out of that.
"What do you think happens when we die?"
Well... Khonshu's voice booms in your inner ear...
Steve is my favorite, because of his wit. I REALLY enjoy his show !!!
Now that's the honesty we all need to check off our lists. Thanks, good questionnaire!
Intelligent and mature answer about what happens after we die. Clever..
Best answer to almost every question esp the “what happens when we die” question
Never thought I would see someone that shares so many answers with me. Love Ethan ❤️
Ethan Hawke's cameos in the "Colbert in the Attic" era were so indescribably offbeat and wonderful ...
The part with the dog and the clock... Wow 😮🐕🕐❓
I freely admit I did the "awww" along with the crowd when he said his favorite smell was his wife.
Ethan needs to do a movie with Josh Brolin, as his brother. They look like brothers.
Lol
Awww loved him since the early 90’s. Great answers!!
Man, I'd love to smoke a bowl with these two. The conversations would be EPIC.
I am surprised how much more that I adore Ethan Hawke after that interview! (And I already held him in high esteem)❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I fully appreciate the humility and wisdom of his response to the death question.
I didn't know how badly I needed this in my life.
Ethan Hawke (otherwise known as Handsome Hawke - see Jimmy Kimmel Handsome Man Club!) looks more and more like one of the Brolins...
PBJ and ticks. He's my spirit animal.
I loved Ethan Hawke when I was young, and now I love him even more.
Kudo's for Ethan for chacking and noticing the ticks. He is probably a nature guy and ticks can happen. I did not notice and now in my 20th year of Lyme disease, which has defined my lifa all those time
The way this guy answers questions, I understand, now, why _two_ segments were necessary.
Wow this questionnaire actually worked with him lol. I feel like I know him much more profoundly now.
“Dads watching that old kidnapper guy from black phone on RUclips” -my kids
That's the exact same thing I think when we die. The smile i had while he was talking about that was huge.
Fantastic answers!
yeah the divine concept of time!I knew I loved this guy!
What a classy fella. Always enjoy his work.
Haven't seen one of these in a while, and yet just yesterday I was contemplating the answer to the best sandwich question. Seriously.
It aint Christmas until Gruber drops.
One interesting thing is that most people who took the Questionert said they ask for the autographs of baseball players, Ethank Hawke switched it around with Kris Kristofferson.
Just watched Black Phone 2 nights ago...this man scares the shit out of me 🤣🤣
that was a written character, that he performed well.
That answer about what happens after death is just perfect... Something like Shakespearean. That's why Ethan Hawk has always been one of my favorite actors.
Ethan is an authentic person, amen.
There should be a movie casting Josh Brolin and Ethen Hawke - both *bearded* versions - as siblings. Maybe make them rough bikers (Josh being the older, more grizzled brother).
Wow .his answer to what happens when you die, made me cry. Beautiful. Ty
Just pointing out that Die Hard came out on July 4th weekend. Of course, nothing says a Christmas film cannot come out at other times of the year.
"Ethan Hawke seems like a guy who wasn't supposed to be a movie star, but he slipped through the cracks and everyone was just like..."OK." 🤣
-Mean Tweets
um. have you seen the way he looked in his 20s and 30s? 🤔
(comment reeks of 'clueless millennial')
*Richard Linklater approves of Ethan's what happens after death answer?*
Kudos to his answer of what happens when we die:
Not “the intelligence or the DNA-makeup to answer that question,..” 👍 🙏
Then immediately, without hesitation, followed with "Favorite action movie?" | "Die Hard!" ..... Love it!
I was already a fan of Ethan Hawke - even more so now. Same with the 2 x Die Hard answers.
Ethan Hawke always gives the most interesting, thought-provoking and funny interviews... which has always messed with my head, because in his body of work, the things he has done I really liked are few and far between, so I always really want to like him, but somehow still don't most times I watch one of his movies or shows 🤔
Die Hard answer. Two out of two. Amazing.
5:14 Amazing answer. My only quibble is that dogs are extreme creatures of habit and do seem to understand the concept of time. but then again I suppose that only further reinforces his point.
Great response to that question … what happens when we die…. no one knows….respect!👏🏽❤️
What a thoughtful humyn
finally someone answered the action movie question correctly.
I dunno; Die Hard is always up there in my list, but also The Warriors and The Magnificent Seven.
@@ericminch I think Aliens is till the perfect action movie..Die Hard is a close second.
Beautiful soul
I keep waiting for one of these folks to say that the best sandwich is a Rueben. LOL
Wow, Ethan Hawk is such a genuine and cool dude.
Human! Human being is the scariest animal, Stephen.
I loved his answer to what happens when we die. He articulated what I feel perfectly.
I miss Colbert's response to the Apples or Oranges. Loved that he said it every time
My dog understands the clock ⏰ perfectly and knows exactly the times
Good honest emotional guy right here..
what happens when we die ? best answer ever TRUTH ...now i know why I always loved Ethan his words are like apples of gold in pictures of silver
This is a fun idea! Dig it!
I LOVE this man.
My dog knows exactly what time it is, to the minute: bed time, dinner time, walk time. He knows. Rain storms? He knows they're coming and how long they're going to last.
WHAT???!! I love him even MORE??!!! Not. Possible.
My favorite Ethan Hawke movie: 'Maddie' with Sadie Hawkins... awesome!
“Maudie”, and yes it was a fabulous lovely movie.
i love him so much
finally someone had the answer I've always said for 'scariest animal'... ticks for sure!!
Ethan Hawke is aging into Josh Brolin
REAL DEEP ANSWER ON WHAT HAPPENS TO US WHEN WE DIE!!!
The Colbert Questionaire. Where the questions are prepared, and the answers are too!
He is a fine Author as well.Good reads
I think Ethan Hawke is so amazing! I love him so much! Favorite actor all time for me!❤
Great suit!
I love this man so much ❤❤
Okay, Ethan making me cry. Love you Ethan
I see this dude and I think...TAKING LIVES
Wow. Somehow I'm not surprised with his answers. He's always come across as a down to Earth regular guy. Kris Kristofferson! I love that! What do any of us know about death? We barely know all about life. Here's a celebrity worth looking up to. Rare these days. Thanks Ethan!
