  • If you own a 2004 to 2006 Jeep TJ or LJ, you probably know what this video is all about. The stock fuel filler has this problem where, when its full, and the pump clicks off, some fuel gurgles back up the filler hose and down the side of your rig. Its not cool, its a hazard, and its plain old annoying. Well after some time owning my LJ, I think i've found a fix!

    2:15 mark: Twist "like you're gonna break if off". Priceless that you shared my biggest concern with the project. Thanks. Mine is stuck in the position that will not allow fuel into the tank at all.

      yea man! it’s made of a pretty maliable plastic. it’ll kinda contort a bit and pop off! i guess you know that now though. ;) glad i could help!

    Dropped the tank yesterday on my 05 LJ and did this fix. Filled up the tank and there was no spit-back. I drove it well into the low-fuel warning light to lighten the tank and had no problems. Ok, 1 problem. Removing the fuel pump ring was a challenge, but we did finally get it off and back on. Thanks for this!

      i recently dropped my tank again (fuel pump went already!). the ring was a pain, again. i went ahead and installed a genright fuel pump access panel this time though.

      @@SWBCrawler To anyone work for Jeep, how is this very dangerous situation not a Factory Recall? Fuel can literally fly in your face.

      @@WhistlerSki2003 yea lots of us wondered the same thing why no recall? This didn’t start happening until the tj was out of production. I’m guessing the small production run that this affects (only a few model years) made it too small of an impact to require a recall.

    Hi. I'm considering doing this fix sometime in the near future. BSK Garage recently uploaded a video titled "How to Remove Fuel Pump Ring DIY
    ." Do you think buying the tool (about $20) to easily remove the fuel pump ring would be worth it? I was originally thinking about doing the hammer/screw driver method to remove the ring since I'm not really a fan of buying tools that I will likely only end up using once.

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  4 года назад

      Well. The hammer and screwdriver method works. But you have to be careful. I broke the output on the fuel pump on accident. You can avoid that by simply being careful though. I slipped with the hammer and hit the pump. Just my luck. Otherwise it was just fine.

    The valve he has in his hand at 0:41. I took a 2 foot steel rod and popped it loose back into the tank. Seems to have fixed my slow fill problem. I did put the GM hose on it so it has a roll over valve. No Tank removal required.

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  3 года назад

      The gm valve made my problem so much worse. Not sure if removing the stock valve changed that for you. But in my case I couldn't get the gm valve to sit straight though to not kink.

    • @gchambs
      @gchambs 3 года назад

      Will it cause any problems if I remove the piece without the GM hose (so no roll over valve) or will that cause problems

  • @gchambs
    @gchambs 3 года назад +1

    Can I remove the stock fuel filler entirely (instead of sanding down and reinstalling) or will that cause problems?

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  3 года назад +2

      I think you could, but this valve serves a purpose. It prevents fuel from spilling in the event of a rollover or flop. You could say that this isn't a concern for you if you do not off-road, but it's more important in the event of an accident. Spilled fuel isn't only bad for the environment, it can cause an already bad situation (car accident) into a worse one by adding a fire. I wouldn't recommend removing the valve completely.

    Can this part not be purchased? Just bought an '06 and it's doing this. However, if I'm going to do all that work, shouldn't I just use a new one or am I missing something?

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  3 года назад

      I would imagine you could buy one from the dealer.. but why? Once the tank is out, A few seconds with some sandpaper is all it takes. Then it's as good as new.

    Hey bud, similar problem on my end. I cant fill my tank up more 3/4. When I try it just spits up. Do you think this is the issue. Or is the floater the issue and im really at full?

    • @SWBCrawler
      @SWBCrawler  5 лет назад

      Is it an 04-06 Wrangler? If so, probably a combination of both. Mine didn't spit until it was completely full. The guage would read full. The spit comes when the fuel is able to come out of the filter neck without being stopped ( I think). The float is part of the fuel pump in these wranglers. So replacing or inspecting that will require dropping the tank. Id do the valve fix if you have the tank out.

    • @TyGuyPS5

      Its a 99. But im thinking what you're thinking. Possibly it is full but just reads 3/4's. Ill drop it and check both I suppose. Thank you!
