See how ZATHURA's reptilian aliens, the Zorgons, got their tails in this excerpt from "Cable Mechanism Basics - Tentacles" with Creature FX mechanic Richard Landon (Pacific Rim, Jurassic Park, Aliens). Landon reveals how he constructed a functional, fluid, and flexible Zorgon tail mechanism with affordable cable, a nylon "spine," and threaded insert standoffs, to keep everything aligned.

i love the production design in Zathura!
im literally watching this to see how i can incorporate it into your xenomorph costume tail lol
Very cool more entertaining than most continuum manipulators we see in the academic world
Oh I always wondered if it was a cable mechanism! This is so awesome, you guys are amazing!
really cool. I have always loved the design of the Zorgons
Awesome like always!
That's ingenious. So cool.

Hello, what do
you have to do to go to one of your courses live, and where are you ?,
ie, courses of for example 3 months of duration ???
Super
Thank you for making this course. I have a question. I assume you are using the pulley system attached to a bigger servo. I also assume the servo does not have a position (it moves left, right, velocity). If the tail has moved from its original position (someone moved it left or right) while the system was shut down, how do you reset it when it comes online? I believe the cables in your system cannot move when pulled/pushed by hand (if it's connected to a servo) but still want to know if you can provide a solution.

@@StanWinstonSchool Thank you.
I'm getting some inspiration for a feature for a Godzilla suit project...
Would it be possible to make this into a naga tail? As in a tail that appears to replace the legs?
You could probably do something like that for a wheel chair user. By building a tail with Omni tails on the bottom.
What kind of nylon do you guys use for that kind of flexibility? This mechanism is awesome!

How would you change the configuration for a tail that starts out hanging down, but then the rest of the long tail is mainly upright?
How would someone like me who lives in the UK take one of these web courses

Stan Winston School thanks for your help, I really appreciate it
Any way we can actually buy one already made ?
Cool, but how is it attached to a person's behind? Do you use a kind of belt or a harness?
Most definitely a harness, look into fursuit tails for some good harness guides
What kind of cable does he use to make the tail?
