      I’m glad you like the video and best of luck to you on the retrofit.
      If you don’t have a 90 degree adapter for a dremel, that is a very nice tool to use to grind down the dash.
      Also, an added thing I would do is spray paint the rear part of the screen black where the hooks are. That way, when you install you’ll even see less of the small gap. Just an idea. Good luck!

      Hi, I tried to reply to your pm on the Bimmer forum, but I’m. It sure if it’s sending correctly. To answer your question, I had a small gap between the backside of the 10.25” display and the dash, which is between 8 to 12mm (5/16” to 1/2”) wide. It’s barely noticeable at all.
      I was thinking that if you spray painted the back part of the display (aluminum section) with black spray paint that you would notice the gap at all.

      Hi, I did an NBT EVO retrofit and initially my usb didn’t work, because bmw flipped the connection so I had to shave the lug off of the round plug for the usb in the arm rest and flip it 180 degrees. I don’t remember about the aux, but I’ll check when my daughter brings the car back in awhile.
      I shot video of the entire NBT EVO retrofit but haven’t edited together yet. Maybe that’ll be my next RUclips project.

    Absolutely love the video, and great job on it! This has piqued my curiosity for my BMW F30 then. Mine is a 2014 320i xDrive and it already has come with the bigger screen (Do believe it is 8.8") as it is an NBT. Do you know, if at all, if this is a straight swap for the display with nothing else needed? I was looking at the persons' ebay listing and only saw one thing there, with no screen. They do state that they have them, I will inquire a bit more later on it. I would really like to have a bigger screen with the Apple CarPlay. Touch would be a bonus too. You did a fantastic job.

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  3 года назад +3

      Hi, I’m really glad that you liked the video. I think that you should be able to connect it to your NBT system and then just use Bimmercode to adjust your display output to the large screen. You also may be able to just plug and play it as you have the larger 8.8” screen.
      I had the smaller screen and the non NBT EVO screen, so when I went into the Bimmercode app, there was no option for a larger screen for me, until I upgraded my head unit.
      I personally went with the non touch screen to save some money, but a touch screen would nice, but I find using the iDrive controller to work really well.
      I recommend checking with you EBay seller on the compatibility as they would have a better understanding of what gear you have on your vehicle, but I think this is the best upgrade you can do for a F30.
      The F30 Isn’t my primary car in the family, but I find that I always want to take it because of the awesome interface and huge screen.
      Good luck and thanks again for watching!!

    You sir, are THE MAN! Thank you for such an informative video, I am very confident in doing this retrofit myself now after watching this and downloading the PDF templates. Am I correct in assuming that i will have the APIX2 connection as i currently have NBT Evo ID5 in my f32, and the the F15 screen is from a 2014, thus will not require the voltage converter display cable?

    • @shamz4033

      So I tried plugging it in and got a no signal message. I assume I need the voltage converter display cable? I also tried plugging in a same size screen as my f32 but from a 2014 and got the same message.

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  3 года назад +1

      Hi Shamz, I believe you’re on track as far as needing a voltage regulator. Initially, I thought you may just need to select a different size screen option I using a software tool like Bimmercode or ESys, but because you tried the same size screen that you currently have, but from a 2014, I assume it’s the voltage regulator. Great job troubleshooting! I had to troubleshoot as welll.
      I purchased by big screen and head unit from a from a gentleman in Florida who sells all of the parts for this type of upgrade. If you can’t find it on EBay, try him. His email is getbmwcoding@gmail.com

      @@shamz4033 Hi Shamz, I just had an idea also. If there is a part number on your large display, you could google it and see if it’s an APIX 1 or APIX 2. My assumption is that it’s probably an APIX 1, which would require the voltage regulator. I used a large non touch screen from an F15, and it had an APIX 1. I believe the touch screens are APIX 2

    Awesome video! Question. I have a 2016 F83 M4 with the NBT Evo and stock 8.8" screen. Would I need the voltage regulator cable? Would I need to do any coding to adjust the screen resolution? Thanks in advance,

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  2 года назад +1

      Hi Terry,
      You would only need a voltage regulator if you are going to use an older 10.25” screen with APIX1 connector like I did. The newer screens have an APIX2 connector. To my knowledge all of the touch screen versions have APIX2.
      You’ll need to check to see what type of connector the screen that you’re buying has. The benefit of the APIX1 older screens is that they’re cheaper. If I remember correctly I only paid $225 to $250 for mine, but I needed the voltage reducer cable.
      Regarding coding. My guess is that you should be able to use the inexpensive BIMMER code app on your phone to select the larger screen, which is inexpensive and would also let you customize other things are your car easily. I hope this helps.

    Great video, most informative I've seen on RUclips... I want to do exactly what you have done in your video. But I'm not sure on the exact screen to buy from ebay. I have a 2014 f30 NBT non satnav with same 6.5in screen. I have an MMI carplay installed so my aim is to upgrade like you but with touchscreen. Is this possible, do I simply just buy the x5 f15 screen with touch screen of course with bimmercode also?
    Thanks

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  2 года назад

      Hi, yes, you can definitely use the touchscreen version from the X5 and I believe as that’s the newer option you will not need the voltage adapter between the head unit and the display like I had to use.
      If you get lucky you’ll be able to use BimmerCode app and simply code the display to work with your head unit, but because you have a 2014 bmw like I have the display may not be compatible with your head unit. You will either have the option with a bimmer code to select the larger screen or you will not. If you do not have the option, then you will likely need the new head unit upgrade. That was my case so I ended up upgrading to the NBT Evo head unit which is compatible. The person I bought my hardware from was very knowledgeable and knew exactly which display is compatible with which head unit. He also remotely coded my head unit to work with my display.
      His email is getbmwcoding@gmail.com and he’s located in Florida. His name is Junior and he’s a whiz at coding. He typically has the X5 displays on hand. I recommend reaching out to him via email to check the compatibility with your head unit and he has very good prices on the displays and can also code it if you need it.
      I hope this was helpful. I shot all of the video when I did my NBT EVO retrofit, but haven’t got around to editing it and posting it to RUclips. If you end up going the route of the retrofit, let me know and I’ll try to work on that video next.

      @@KeyWestSaltLife Thank you for your in-depth reply 😁......     • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  2 года назад

      Hi, I’m 100% with you and understand. It wanting to do the more expensive EVO upgrade. I think your logic is spot on, check to see if you have the option within bimmercode before purchasing anything else. It’s been over a year since I did the upgrade so I don’t remember exactly where I went within bimmercode to find the display options. If I remember right you had to go deeper into Bimmer code to get to those options.
      The first layer of BimmerCode is the really simple level with items that are easy to modify like enabling streaming Bluetooth audio, showing your tire pressure, Etc.
      If you don’t see the option for the larger screen, then I think he would have to have somebody remotely coded for you.

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  2 года назад

      That’s a good question. I would think you could do it with leather. If you had to cut the leather I would ensure you cut it with enough length to be able to fold the end over a 1/4” or so to leave a nice edge.
      Also, when I first saw this done on RUclips it was from a guy in England who had a leather dash, so I’m sure it’s feasible. The Englishman had paid an installer to do it. hi mate - love the video. How would the template files work for a right hand drive car? any help greatly appreciated...

    • @KeyWestSaltLife
      @KeyWestSaltLife  3 года назад +2

      Hi, that’s a great question. I never thought about that issue before, but if the right hand drive cars have the exact same dash as the left hand drive, but just a mirror version I would think you could print the template and tape it together normally, but just flip it so the printed side is facing your screen, which should give you a mirror template.
      As a note, I built the template using 8.5 inch x 11 inch printer paper and the template is to that scale. If you happen to use A4 printer paper where you live, you want to check the template dimensions after you print it to ensure the scale is still correct. I added some measurements on the template so you can check. As long as the listed measurement on the template matches your ruler or tape measure, then the template will be to scale.
      Lastly, I would go slow cutting your display and do a smaller portion at a time so you don’t trim too much in case their is a difference Between the right vs left drive dashes.
      Thanks for watching and good luck!

      Hi, thanks for your question.
      if you already have a newer ID5/ID6 head unit and iDrive controller and you’re just updating to a non touch 10.25” X5 screen it would run about $250 buying from EBay.
      If your doing the complete retrofit, then around $1500-$1800 (Ebay) depending on which version of head unit you purchase (I bought a head unit from an i3/i8 which does’t have a CD drive which was $300 less than the head unit with a CD drive to save money) and where you get it from. The full ID5/ID6 retrofit required a number of components (ID5/ID6 head unit, iDrive touch controller, 10.25” display, new microphone cable, a MOST optical cable loop, upgraded USB cable to arm rest, WiFi antenna, GPS antenna, Bluetooth Antenna, and Coding).
      If there is interest, I’ll make the full retrofit video showing exactly how to do every step as I’ve already shot all of the footage for it. I just need to edit the material and put it together.
