Dragon Ball canon is chapter 1 to chapter 519. Everything aside from that, whether it's the animated adaptations, the movies, the games, the sequels, etc, is supplementary material and non canon. Including Super.

Lets be honest, the show never really treated him well. He got beat by a hungry Goku and has never made it past the first round of the tournaments. He was just there to be a love interest to Bulma
And the worst part is there are fans who will legitimately argue til they're blue in the face that Goku has always been like this. Goku has always been dumb, but not THAT dumb. Yeah. Goku in the Buu Saga was mature, smart and all around a cool character. The only time he acted like himself again was like maybe two or three episodes, one of which was the filler in which he takes care of Pan. The others coming in the Goku Black arc. And it's honestly SAD.

The people that say "This has always been Goku" clearly don't know Goku at all. After the Cell Saga, anyone with half a brain could notice how much he's changed in the Buu Saga. It's not a heavy change, it still feels like Goku. But he's definitely more serious, matured. It's both the fact that it's been 7 whole years since the Cell Saga, and his having to accept the rather important fact that not everyone he's with is a fighter or wants to be a fighter. An idea that was established as the norm since the start of Dragon Ball, his whole childhood. I mean even his wife's a fighter, even if all she does now mostly is complain.

They cut out a manga section where goku gets some smart lessons from master roshi about fighting while roshi fought jiren, they really made everyone equally as dumb
the zamasu arc was the only arc in the franchise with enough balls to end with permanent consequences of an entire timeline dying. Instead of just wishing everything back to normal

Goku has never been smart in terms of academics but as a fighter and as a leader he has always been very intelligent. He’s also not as goofy as Super portrays him. When things got real Goku got serious. Like when Goku nearly crushed Frieza’s hand after becoming a Super Saiyan, when he confronted Cell in the ring to measure his power, or many times in the Buu Saga. I feel like Toei was trying too hard to make Goku into Monkey D. Luffy.

I mean that Luffy himself has admitted he isn't good or smart when it comes to a lot of stuff and that's why he relies on his crew so much. It's not a negative for Luffy, it's just part of his character and always has been. The important point is that this isn't Goku's character. I think part of it too is the age difference. Luffy is much younger than Goku so there is a level of immaturity to him. Assuming Luffy grows older like in an epilogue chapter of One Piece, I can see him gaining some of the more serious attributes that Goku gained with maturity. Goku was more like Luffy when he was a kid in the original Dragon Ball, as a Goku got older he became more balanced. Being serious when needed and laid back when there wasn't a serious threat. And when Goku got angry...HOLY SH%T was it chilling to see. That glare Goku gives Frieza when he first goes Super Saiyan...I would not want to be have been on the receiving end of that glare.

That was really more out of sportsmanship. He knew Gohan would win. His only real mistake was assuming Gohan would have the same reaction he would. And even then, he almost immediately realized his mistake and tried to fix it.
as bad as GT was, one of the reasons It's ending was so good, was that It really felt like the goku at the very end of GT was the same person from episode 1 of Dragon Ball, only older, wiser and more experienced. Super's Goku... not so much. It's like Akira took all the genuine mistakes he made through Z and rather than have him learn from them, instead they became his personality. in other words, the literarily opposite of the definition of character development.

Yeah he did it because imagine if Goku revealed it, Beerus would get mad and destroy Earth. Not mentioning Beerus was stressed because of Tournament and Xenosama visit. Yamcha pointed to real Monaka and Goku was aware that Beerus will gonna get mad so he acted like assuming Monaka can split, it's pretty obvious.
Goku was never dumb, he was a child that did not go to school and mostly grew up alone. He was ignorant about a lot of things and innocent but not dumb. I remember watching DB and feeling a certain pity for Goku every time his innocence and lack of understanding of things, it was meant to be a characteristic trait that reflected that he was just a child who lacked opportunities. Even in DBZ, the character development showed how Chi Chi was always adamant Gohan had an education and did not end up like his father. Although it was used at times for comedic relief, it was mostly a reflection of an innocent child who grew up in adverse circumstances. DBS writers missed the mark and made a cartoon of this trait. That's why I could never get into DBS fully, it just seems to me like they did not truly watch DB or DBZ and just made what they thought of Goku his character.

There are plenty of extenses in DBS where Goku is not messing around, when fighting Beerus, when fighting Frieza, when fighting Zamasu and Goku Black, when fighting Jiren etc.

there’s a ton of dumb db moments but get gets a pass Z: tries fighting king yemma because he looked strong. spared vegeta, who just tried killing the whole planet and is a threat, just for a rematch. Didn’t listen to king kais warning about avoiding frieza because he “sounded strong”. Let frieza power up to 100% on a dying planet, just to end up sparing him and wasting time. Heard trunks entire experience with the androids, bulma suggests a plan to prevent all that from every happening, yet ignores all that and wants to fight them cuz the “sounded like a challenge”. Forgets to take his heart medicine because he’s so focused on fighting. Gives cell a senzu bean to show everyone how strong gohan is while ignoring gohan’s feelings. Let guard down vs vegeta. Doesn’t kill buu because he wants the younger fighters ti get a chance, even tho he knows how it almost backfired last time. Doesn’t fuse to fight the most dangerous version of buu because he wanted a challenge. Don’t even get me started on gt it’s even worse. So what do you call all these moments just him being “naive”💀

Bro could learn how kale and caulifla, 2 chicks from other universe fight while fighting and dodged so good that everyone thought he was prolly using UI, could counter time skip in mere minutes, figures out what move his opponents are gonna make and counters it spontaneously, is extremely creative while fighting, so much so that he can totally rely on instincts to fight and counter, literally made his own technique when he was a kid, has insane problem solving skills (problems faced during fights), very high adaptability, high social skills (can talk to and influence almost anyone and can make allies) all of which are high intelligence feats (considering biq is still a form of intelligence) but is still somehow dumb, all thanks to Super.

Goku would have been more of average intelligence post kami’s training which would be 100-105 for Japanese standards. Plus he displayed good sense and very much fighting intelligence that would have got better with experience. He would have stayed like that only gaining more experience and wisdom until of GT. Super Goku is more borderline retarded think Peter from Family Guy. Probably 75 or below. I think they took TFS too seriously for Super.
This is one of the better examples I've seen of this change by far. Still, the Monaka scene may have been a bit silly in general. Puar thought to copy Beerus, sure, but the "controlling" of other characters, not clothes beaming the suit... Goku got a lot dumber, but perhaps everyone regressed a little as well.
"Yay Yamcha survived." For something that always float, Puar sure is grounded to reality and had come to terms on what expectations or standards to set for the great Yamcha.
I watched The Venture Bros recently and I wish more shows wrote like it. They chose real character progression over character traits every time. They also kept continuity for every single joke

Thanks for providing the most perfect example of why I've been completely repulsed by dragon ball super and what they've done to Goku. Been saying this for almost the whole last decade now since it's been that long now, dbs goku is just about exactly like someone that got into some kind of major head accident and now has a mental disability and that, I knew someone that happened to back in highschool mid 2010's, he was extremely smart and cool as hell all the above like the % of people are, junior year he got in a bad, bad car wreck and ever since that day he was mentally disabled and his mentality reverted back down to an elementary kid. It was so, so damn sad for all of us. It's so fucking PITIFUL just how closely bad, that dbs goku so quickly and closely reminds me so much of him. That's no exaggeration of a joke. I really REALLY thought at the end of the episode Goku would have said he know it was Beerus and that Monaka was noting, but played everyone so he could fight him a bit.

Thing is there's been plenty of situations where Goku was about as smart as a bag of bricks in dragon ball,z,and gt But it depends on the situation In average situations or in academic situations Goku is stupid as fuck but when it comes to fighting he's nothing short of a genius,alot of times where he seemed smart was either recognizing another fighter or coming up with wonderful battle plans That clip against monaka (Beerus) was Goku taking test shots similar to what he does against alot of other fighters and an example of this was against Jiren,he didn't figure out it was beerus in a costume because Beerus was intentionally using a different fighting style compared to normal But as soon as Beerus charged up you could tell Goku was being more serious and just pretending to not know at that point

To be honest, I don't think it's that bad. Yes I find it annoying that Goku's intelligence has been reduced to 2 brain cells, but these scenes mostly happen in parts that don't matter to the actual overall contribution to the story or Goku's character. I feel like people just like forcing comparisons to show why Z was better. Obviously it is better but I don't think Super is as bad as everyone says

I think even taking into consideration the dub changes original Dragon Ball had, it doesn’t really change much. Like, with or without the dub changes, Goku in original Ball and Z wasn’t anywhere near as dumb or selfish as he is in Super.

I just left this comment as well. I was looking to see if anyone noticed it. Kinda scary how everyone just went along with it. I haven't watched this part in dub yet, but there's also a big cut between scenes in the Dragonball clip here. Even with the dub, though, in this clip, no one ever says Goku uses Ki to recognize Hero/Shen here. Everyone assumes because of the juxtaposition of clips. Ki was just becoming a thing in Dragonball at this point, it's not yet the personally identifying characteristic it becomes later on. Goku doesn't say, wait I know that ki or anything lol.
I hope goku knows that was beerus and was just happy to fight. He even says that he has beerus’ energy. Goku can literally sense the strength of someone and can feel the power of someone’s life force across galaxies. It’d be so strange for him to truly not know. At least… I hope they confirm that he knew the whole time and was just happy to have his way.

Lets be honest, the show never really treated him well. He got beat by a hungry Goku and has never made it past the first round of the tournaments. He was just there to be a love interest to Bulma
And the worst part is there are fans who will legitimately argue til they're blue in the face that Goku has always been like this. Goku has always been dumb, but not THAT dumb. You can see it very clear difference. Moreover, adult Goku is far more mature than this, acting as a sort of mentor figure throughout Z.

It's both the fact that it's been 7 whole years since the Cell Saga, and his having to accept the rather important fact that not everyone he's with is a fighter or wants to be a fighter. An idea that was established as the norm since the start of Dragon Ball, his whole childhood. I mean even his wife's a fighter, even if all she does now mostly is complain.

Goku has never been smart in terms of academics but as a fighter and as a leader he has always been very intelligent. He’s also not as goofy as Super portrays him. When things got real Goku got serious. Like when Goku nearly crushed Frieza’s hand after becoming a Super Saiyan, when he confronted Cell in the ring to measure his power, or many times in the Buu Saga.

I mean that Luffy himself has admitted he isn't good or smart when it comes to a lot of stuff and that's why he relies on his crew so much. It's not a negative for Luffy, it's just part of his character and always has been. The important point is that this isn't Goku's character.
I think part of it too is the age difference. Luffy is much younger than Goku so there is a level of immaturity to him. Assuming Luffy grows older like in an epilogue chapter of One Piece, I can see him gaining some of the more serious attributes that Goku gained with maturity.
Goku was more like Luffy when he was a kid in the original Dragon Ball, as a Goku got older he became more balanced. Being serious when needed and laid back when there wasn't a serious threat. And when Goku got angry...HOLY SH%T was it chilling to see. That glare Goku gives Frieza when he first goes Super Saiyan...I would not want to be have been on the receiving end of that glare.

That was really more out of sportsmanship. He knew Gohan would win. His only real mistake was assuming Gohan would have the same reaction he would. And even then, he almost immediately realized his mistake and tried to fix it.
as bad as GT was, one of the reasons It's ending was so good, was that It really felt like the goku at the very end of GT was the same person from episode 1 of Dragon Ball, only older, wiser and more experienced. Super's Goku... not so much. It's like Akira took all the genuine mistakes he made through Z and rather than have him learn from them, instead they became his personality. in other words, the literarily opposite of the definition of character development.

Goku was never dumb, he was a child that did not go to school and mostly grew up alone. He was ignorant about a lot of things and innocent but not dumb. I remember watching DB and feeling a certain pity for Goku every time his innocence and lack of understanding of things, it was meant to be a characteristic trait that reflected that he was just a child who lacked opportunities. Even in DBZ, the character development showed how Chi Chi was always adamant Gohan had an education and did not end up like his father. Although it was used at times for comedic relief, it was mostly a reflection of an innocent child who grew up in adverse circumstances. DBS writers missed the mark and made a cartoon of this trait. That's why I could never get into DBS fully, it just seems to me like they did not truly watch DB or DBZ and just made what they thought of Goku his character.

Bro could learn how kale and caulifla, 2 chicks from other universe fight while fighting and dodged so good that everyone thought he was prolly using UI, could counter time skip in mere minutes, figures out what move his opponents are gonna make and counters it spontaneously, is extremely creative while fighting, so much so that he can totally rely on instincts to fight and counter, literally made his own technique when he was a kid, has insane problem solving skills (problems faced during fights), very high adaptability, high social skills (can talk to and influence almost anyone and can make allies) all of which are high intelligence feats (considering biq is still a form of intelligence) but is still somehow dumb, all thanks to Super.

Goku would have been more of average intelligence post kami’s training which would be 100-105 for Japanese standards. Plus he displayed good sense and very much fighting intelligence that would have got better with experience. He would have stayed like that only gaining more experience and wisdom until of GT. Super Goku is more borderline retarded think Peter from Family Guy. Probably 75 or below. I think they took TFS too seriously for Super.
This is one of the better examples I've seen of this change by far. Still, the Monaka scene may have been a bit silly in general. Puar thought to copy Beerus, sure, but the "controlling" of other characters, not clothes beaming the suit... Goku got a lot dumber, but perhaps everyone regressed a little as well.

Thanks for providing the most perfect example of why I've been completely repulsed by dragon ball super and what they've done to Goku. Been saying this for almost the whole last decade now since it's been that long now, dbs goku is just about exactly like someone that got into some kind of major head accident and now has a mental disability and that, I knew someone that happened to back in highschool mid 2010's, he was extremely smart and cool as hell all the above like the % of people are, junior year he got in a bad, bad car wreck and ever since that day he was mentally disabled and his mentality reverted back down to an elementary kid. It was so, so damn sad for all of us. It's so fucking PITIFUL just how closely bad, that dbs goku so quickly and closely reminds me so much of him. That's no exaggeration of a joke. And idk what influence Toryama had there but just me, I just have to believe that he couldn't be happy about that either. I refuse to believe that was his decision. My headcanon is that Goku was playing dumb and was going along with it just for another chance to spar with Beerus
I really REALLY thought at the end of the episode Goku would have said he know it was Beerus and that Monaka was noting, but played everyone so he could fight him a bit.

@imadepooh If that's the case they should've hinted that Goku sensed that in some way rather than leaving it up to the viewer. It's clear that in Super they've dumbed Goku down a tremendous amount and given that writing of his character we can't give him the benefit of the doubt that he knew this and was being goofy or was trolling.
I think Goku knows they’re trying to trick him, and just goes along with it knowing he’ll get a good spar.
That opening with Yamcha felt straight out of DBZ abridged.

Thing is there's been plenty of situations where Goku was about as smart as a bag of bricks in dragon ball,z,and gt
But it depends on the situation
In average situations or in academic situations Goku is stupid as fuck but when it comes to fighting he's nothing short of a genius,alot of times where he seemed smart was either recognizing another fighter or coming up with wonderful battle plans
That clip against monaka (Beerus) was Goku taking test shots similar to what he does against alot of other fighters and an example of this was against Jiren,he didn't figure out it was beerus in a costume because Beerus was intentionally using a different fighting style compared to normal
But as soon as Beerus charged up you could tell Goku was being more serious and just pretending to not know at that point

Goku in super is smart in his own unique way. Like when beerus tries to stop him from going to see Zeno and he faked flipped the button and made him look and then left.
To be honest, I don't think it's that bad. Yes I find it annoying that Goku's intelligence has been reduced to 2 brain cells, but these scenes mostly happen in parts that don't matter to the actual overall contribution to the story or Goku's character. I feel like people just like forcing comparisons to show why Z was better. Obviously it is better but I don't think Super is as bad as everyone says

I think even taking into consideration the dub changes original Dragon Ball had, it doesn’t really change much. Like, with or without the dub changes, Goku in original Ball and Z wasn’t anywhere near as dumb or selfish as he is in Super.

@@aganbraganca4156 yeh specially after the frieza saga, chichi was shocked by his consideration of Gohan's study in one scene. Goku is was beyond the other warriors mentally, free spirit. He may lack the tactician skills exhibited by vegeta throughout the show but he still a fighting genius.
Don't tell dublets that Goku only knew it was Kami because he connected "Shen" to "Shenlong" and went from there.
I just left this comment as well. I was looking to see if anyone noticed it. Kinda scary how everyone just went along with it. I haven't watched this part in dub yet, but there's also a big cut between scenes in the Dragonball clip here. Even with the dub, though, in this clip, no one ever says Goku uses Ki to recognize Hero/Shen here. Everyone assumes because of the juxtaposition of clips. Ki was just becoming a thing in Dragonball at this point, it's not yet the personally identifying characteristic it becomes later on. Goku doesn't say, wait I know that ki or anything lol.

Anime version of DBSuper Goku almost feels like a parody version of himself from the previous series, it’s kinda crazy.
I hope goku knows that was beerus and was just happy to fight. He even says that he has beerus’ energy. Goku can literally sense the strength of someone and can feel the power of someone’s life force across galaxies. It’d be so strange for him to truly not know. At least… I hope they confirm that he knew the whole time and was just happy to have his way.
