It worked well. I was not surprised because it was the same as the other wheel that I did. As I showed in the video the wheel that I drilled took a lot of material removal to balance it. I used to balance 24" crankshaft grinding wheels and we actually used lead washers that screwed to the side of the hub. Thank you again for making them available.

Steve, I wonder if that wheel was so far out of balance that a good static balance is still out dynamically. I was amazed how much weight it took for a 1/4" wheel.
The wheel that I balanced was actually a 1/2", I demoed the 1/4" to show the mounting. I think that one of of the reasons for the amount of weight is how close to the center the weight was applied. Building a dynamic balancer would be an interesting project. The other thing that I need to double check is the accuracy of the arbor. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Looks like a neat design. I made a balancing ring with adjustable weights so it’s not at the mercy of the fixed weight of the set screws. It’s essentially a cup with thin edges that are perpendicular to the wheel sides around which the weights are adjusted. The balance procedure I use is in the Jones & Shipman 540 manual. The results are remarkable. Be well, Steve.
I have seen that style hub. They are very expensive. The ring works well for an existing hub that does not have that feature. I am always on the lookout for hubs, maybe I will find one. Thank you for watching and commenting.
Looks a convenient way to balance a wheel, nice idea. It took me a good while to get good surface grinding results, a combination of wheel grit size and type etc. combined with balancing. I made the mistake of initially going for too fine a grit, a 36 grit wheel gave better results. Good luck with your experiments.
I was rushing the grind a little. I have gotten better finishes in the past. I need to let it spark out after the final grind. I think that I am getting some noise in the machine from the belt. Need to investigate that. Thanks for watching and commenting.
Thanks for the video Steve. I wonder if the remaining ripples are an indicator of some other issue. Could it be spindle bearing wear or motor vibration?
There is definitely some noise in the grinding system. I suspect the motor bearings. The spindle feels smooth. Thank you for watching and commenting.

Always, I may have missed saying that but I always do. Have been grinding for over 50 years.
32 years precision grinding and i have never once needede to balance a 1/2 inch wide wheel. Neither has anyone i have ever worked with or shop owners. For some reason a lot of youtube amatures seem to like creating problems for no reason. I change wheels multiple times a day sometimes. This is just stupid!
We will need to agree to disagree. I am a retired machinist with over 50 years of experience. For normal commercial finishes your are right and the only grinding wheels that I ever balanced were 24" diameter crankshaft grinding wheels. As a home machinist I seek finer finishes than I ever attained commercially. Balancing these surface grinding wheels made enough of an improvement in the finish to make it worthwhile.
Journeyman tool and die maker here. 2 carbide shops and now over 10 doing all grinding in gage shop. possibly you just have a garbage spindle but i have built many draw dies and expand noses, also powdered metal dies all at 4 micro polished. No one ever complaines about my finishes. Only wheels i balance are 1" wide for something like a 6/18 wet grinder where wheel will stay on hub till worn out or larger wheels. No way i want a bunch of set screws spinning. @@sharkrivermachine
Im just saying sometimes im holding 2 micron, thats better than class b gage blocks and didnt balance the wheel. Not once ever. @@sharkrivermachine
