Surface grinder wheel balancing

  • Surface grinder wheel balancing is probably the most important (and often neglected) aspect of surface grinding. Using unbalanced or poorly balanced wheels is unsafe, can damage the spindle and makes it impossible to get good surface finish.
Static wheel balancing systems can be expensive and are not easy to setup. Here is a simple approach.
Sown is my Ingar 618 surface grinder, but the process is the same for all grinders. Only the wheel adapter might be different.
I am using precision ball bearings salvaged from an old hard-drive. Newer hard drives are using hydrodynamic bearings that are not suitable for this application. High quality stock ball bearings can be used as well, though in my tests were not as sensitive. Shields or seals must be removed (if present) and all traces of grease or oil must be washed off.
Sorry about the typos in the video text (noticed after posting). I was working on this video late at night...

Glad it worked for you. Wheels should be checked for balance after a few dressings.

Very nice. I like this approach and I have a friend who probably has lots of old HD ball bearings since he dismantles them for scrap. Like that wheel dresser as well. Is that a commercial product or something you built?

Thank you. The dresser is a commercial product. You can find it on Ebay and other online suppliers for about $80. Search for "Angle Sine Dresser Fixture". The one I got is surprisingly well made and accurate. I am using it for about 2 years and it is great for dressing a bevel etc.

@@prelibation Thanks will go looking. I have the same model Ingar at home. Giving it some love and attention at the moment. Very keen for any videos/photos of how you have setup/use/improved yours. Have watched your table automation video several times. Thanks for posting!

Interesting concept - a similar idea to tire balancing beads. However I am not sure if this is as sensitive as weight balancing.

@@prelibation I made a homemade prototype and it works fine, balances automatically.
