This is right before he went to live at Mt Baldy Zen Center. He says that he was drinking sometimes 3 bottles of red wine before and during performances, but I can't see that he's affected. A great performance from a man who says his life was in tatters at this point.
Best live version of this song, he kills it here...damn I wish he was still alive making music. We need wise men like this instead of this idiotic mainstream culture where businessmen with no artistic genes in their bodies dictate who gets radio and tv airplay. Intelligence is out of fashion.
Even Leonard Cohen’s music struggled in the US when he was alive, he was popular in Canada and in Europe. With American mainstream being the one that dictates what music is truly popular in the West, I fear we won’t get another Leonard Cohen for a very long time, if ever again :c
@@cmondude.. You're definitely right. How many years has it been since we've had a true genius come along. They won't put the spotlight on them now, they want it dumber and people fan the flame. I hate what has happened to music and life in general. Business monopolies are destroying the world.
Lots of talented people out there getting drowned out by algorithms and the flood of crappy AI content. If you told me the last 6 or so years of pop songs were written by AI I wouldn't even be surprised.
This has always been my favorite song and performance on video from Leonard Cohen. Thank you so much, I'm sure his spirit and coolness will always find it's people. R.I.P.
This video is so fantastic and it's just one of so many. I have no words to describe what Leonard has added to my life since I found him. thank you Leonard forever. Batman I so agree with you.
@Batman10166 you're so right, somoetimes I go through the day, and suddenly realise I haven't listened to him, andI feel so happy as I put his music on. And I cry because I love his work and want to see him again. My favourite at the minute is Closing Time. my partner and I drive along in the car singing the words with him. he makes me so happy.
Yes, he saw it all. Was an un proclaimed prophet. Now people are staining to grasp what might have been a neon now-reality. If we BS ourselves we shrink our souls. Peggy Finston MD
I remember this .... I watched this that night . Do you have the live version of Closing Time that he sang that night on' Friday Night with Ralph Benmurgui' ? He was with Rebecca DeMornay then , and she was also at this show
Where did they played the show, in all Canada? Who is Rebecca DeMornay? Men what a great performence of L Cohen, ( love the chors ) he must be a hero in your country... I lived in Toronto for a summer and was in Montreal to. . . great expirence. Good old teen memories!
I think the backing singers Perla Batalla and Julie Christensen he had touring with him around this time and on this album were as good as the web sisters
I imagine an angry God scolding his wayward children sounds a lot like Leonard Cohen singing The Future. I believe if there is a hell, everyone there is shocked they never got an invitation.
Other than him changing the line "give me crack and anal sex" to "speed and careless sex" which I suppose he did for t.v. this is the best rendition I've heard of this prescient poem/song. Too bad though, because when he wrote it crack and aids seemed to be the modern plague. The latter still is unfortunately and there have also been two genocides in Africa (Rowanda & Sudan)since other than the one in Bosnia/Serbia, at the very time this was performed.
The original look of the eastern girl was erased when Leonard says : "love is the only....." Shame to Leonard for ever and ever. The original clip was erased. SO WHEN THEY SAY REPENT, YOU SHOULD HAVE TO CONSIDER. You passed away,I like all your music music, yet I think that was a fawl move. RIP.
Not afraid to stand alone here and lonely: please stick to your original lyrics. Don't make them more anodyne for general public consumption. I am disappointed.
Your premonitions are coming true Mr. Cohen. Things are gonna slide, slide in all direction..
I really like this song, ❤️ I love his voice and personality..RIP
I really love this man
The song is about now. He knew what was coming.
Yes, that’s what I say...his premonition is coming true.
Prophet of his time. Love's the only engine of survival.
Miss you like crazy Mr. Cohen!

@tanya4809 You're welcome. It's always struck me how much this song feels like the Book of Revelations...

They were better
Who the F gave this a thumbs down ?
@futurecatholic
He has the --vision--, just like Nostradamus! No other explanation.
I imagine an angry God scolding his wayward children sounds a lot like Leonard Cohen singing The Future. I believe if there is a hell, everyone there is shocked they never got an invitation.
whats the guys name in the back round behind leonard the 1 that has the drum stick in his hand
Pagliaro does The Future verrry well also!
@tanya4809 very prescient, indeed.

"I'm the little jew.... who wrote the bible,......."
he omits "anal sex" from the song and it's a real bummer
