Lyrics:
It's four in the morning, the end of December
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New York is cold, but I like where I'm living
There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening.
I hear that you're building your little house deep in the desert
You're living for nothing now, I hope you're keeping some kind of record.
Yes, and Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Did you ever go clear?
Ah, the last time we saw you you looked so much older
Your famous blue raincoat was torn at the shoulder
You'd been to the station to meet every train
And you came home without Lili Marlene
And you treated my woman to a flake of your life
And when she came back she was nobody's wife.
Well I see you there with the rose in your teeth
One more thin gypsy thief
Well I see Jane's awake --
She sends her regards.
And what can I tell you my brother, my killer
What can I possibly say?
I guess that I miss you, I guess I forgive you
I'm glad you stood in my way.
If you ever come by here, for Jane or for me
Your enemy is sleeping, and his woman is free.
Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes
I thought it was there for good so I never tried.
And Jane came by with a lock of your hair
She said that you gave it to her
That night that you planned to go clear
Sincerely, L. Cohen
I do not own this video
My favourite line is 'thanks for the trouble you took from her eyes. I thought it was there for good so I never tried". Moves me every time...
The most crushing lyric ever written.
I feel the same, possibly most beautiful lines from all his songs.
❤
And what can i tell you, my brother, my killer
What can i possibly say
Ornitorenk Mafya what does he mean by that?
God what a horrible week...RIP to a man I never met, but who means more to me than most the people i have met.
Barely standing after hearing this loss. What to do but keep finding, looking and loving. All to do.
Nick Falletta I can't quite believe this sad news I am 😢😢 and I have had to pull over and just listen work can wait 😢😢😢😢😢
Nick Falletta I had the chance to meet him one cold November morning (not even kidding. It was poetic) on Ste-Catherine street in Montreal. I was coming back from an all night party and was a little off. I crossed the street and there's this well dressed old man with a scarf and a classy hat and it was Leonard Cohen. I started listening to him when I was 17 with my girlfriend of the time. We used to lay in bed late at night, naked listening to all his albums. Bird On a A Wire, Who By Fire, Chelsea Motel. I said hi Mr Cohen he said hello, I said you're music means so much to me thank you. He said thanks and shook my hand. I was completely dumbfounded. he said goodbye and went along. When he died me and that girlfriend of mine which has been my friend for 20 years went to his appartement near The Main in Montreal and laid some roses and oranges amongst the hundreds of other flowers, incense, candles and offerings. We stayed there for 2 hours almost silent.
wow...i would have been dumbfounded as well, in complete shock. that's an incredible story :)
Nick Falletta I feel that way often.
Goodbye, Leonard. Thank you for staying with us so long.
Hugo Montoya I'm glad I'm not the only person who went right to this song after hearing the news.
He'll be missed. Music took a heavy blow today.
You are not the only one guys, I just literally cried on it..! So poetic, so beautiful and today so heartbreaking. Immortal.
Leonard Cohen was one of the most important songwriters ever to have lived. His incredible and massive body of work is one of the most brutally honest, and beautifully expressed translations of human psychology and emotion that exists. He was a true pioneer, perhaps not through any true desire to be a trendsetter, but through a manner of carrying out all aspects of his artistry completely in his own way. The world has lost one of its most unique voices, but a voice that I'm sure will be heard for generations to come. Rest in peace to a truly great man, a man that helped me realise the power of music, and a songwriter that will forever be an inspiration for me to make and perform music.
How might I disagree with you?
Amen!
Cohen, the CIA and MKULTRA.

Re: Leonard Norman Cohen vs. Kelley Lynch

L.C. vs. K.L.
Court of Appeal Case No. B267409
Dear Judge Perluss:
I am writing in response to Wendy Lascher’s letters to this Court dated October 10, 2018 with respect to the above referenced cases.
Wendy Lascher does not represent my interests and I did not authorize her to request a continuance of oral arguments due to the retaliatory proceedings before Los Angeles Superior Court, Case No. 6CJ03685, related to deceased “protected” party, Leonard Cohen, and/or the co-conspirators, Robert Kory and Michelle Rice that involves a very serious federal tax controversy, obstruction of justice with respect to federal tax matters and compliance with federal tax laws, and the use of the fraudulent California and Colorado restraining orders to tamper with the administration of those laws.
As set forth in the Natural Wealth suit, filed with the U.S. District Court in Colorado on July 1, 2005, Leonard Cohen and Robert Kory planned to use restraining orders to “crush” and “discredit” me as a “witness.” This does not seem to be a valid basis for the issuance of restraining orders. This allegation was raised six months prior to Cohen obtaining his first civil harassment order against me. That order was not a domestic violence order and therefore one must conclude that the nature of Cohen and my relationship, which was purely business as set forth in the motion filed with the Boulder Combined Court, changed at some time during the period of 2005 through May 25, 2011 when the fraudulent California domestic violence order was issued to Cohen without minimal due process, service, notice, and/or a meaningful opportunity to be heard. I would like to point out that I did not see Leonard Cohen again, apart from legal proceedings before LA Superior Court, since November 2004. Leonard Cohen and I were not in a “dating” relationship. Sexual harassment and sexual assault are not “dating” and California’s laws, as well as federal VAWA, have a statutory relationship requirement. My lawyers discussed the sexual harassment and so forth with Robert Kory as early as January 2005. At that time, in front of my lawyers and accountant, Robert Kory offered me “50% community property.” I have steadfastly refused to enter into any type of settlement agreement with Leonard Cohen due to his conduct and the conduct of his representatives. I find the issuance of the fraudulent California domestic violence order, and particularly in light of the public’s interest in sexual harassment, gravely offensive. I also take offense at the government, without any jurisdiction whatsoever, assigning me a “dating” or any other type of “relationship” with anyone......................................................................................................................................................................
He is what Bob Dylan wishes he could be.

This is a most interesting version of one of L. Cohen's most fascinating songs. He takes liberties with the lyrics making it even sadder and more reflective. He appears depressed here also. He did suffer from periodic depression, not uncommon for someone who viewed this sad world so darkly. He was one of the greatest poet-songwriters of all time. I'v'e loved him and his songs and his poetry for over 45 years and feel like I've lost a brother. I'm sure there is a special place in Heaven for him, this brilliant, modest, self deprecating humanitarian. R.I.P Leonard my brother.
Yeah I've listened to it hundreds of times over the years and still don't fully understand it. The famous blue raincoat was actually Leonard's. Did he give it to his brother? The fact that he sign's the letter L.Cohen clearly shows clearly that he is talking about himself and his brother and not some other unknown persons. So did his brother sleep with his girlfriend Jane? Who is Jane. There are explanations out there but I never was satisfied by any of them. I can't remember if Cohen himself explained the song. But I love it. The way he produces that lovely tune on the line 'Jane came by with a lock of your hair' is pure songwriting magic. It can me cry if I'm feeling that way.
We don't have knighthoods here but we do have Medal of Freedom. Obama today is handing them out to the likes of Robert Redford, Bruce Springsteen and a dozen or so other great scientists, architects, writers, poets etc. No President has ever handled this with more grace, aplomb and humor than Obama. I shall miss this great man.
Andrian Curshen cohen says he couldve done better with the chronology of it
Andrian Curshen Did you ever think that perhaps L.C. slept with his brother's wife? And he is speaking for his brother? and himself.
@@silverhopeful -- Leonard Cohen never had a brother.

Lines like "And when she came back she was nobody's wife", and "What can I tell you, my brother, my killer/ I guess I miss you, I guess I forgive you/ I'm glad you stood in my way" and "Yes, and thanks, for the trouble you took from her eyes/I thought it was there for good so I never tried" just amaze me and leave me in awe. These lines completely nail it and are written with such ability, sensibility and depth. Leonard is a pure genius! What a wordsmith!
He was a genius and a wonderful artist. I do not foresee any match to his grandeur even in the long haul.
Jesus this song is like the embodiment of sadness in sound form. RIP Len.
It's not just the amazing words, it's the way leonard sing them...
Wishing you the most blissful transition possible.
I'm bawling like a baby... If there was any single artist that shaped
me, it was you, from your novels, to your poems, to your music. One of
my first college friends, my first "grown up" friend was formed because
of a mutual liking for you... .I learned about Lorca and Duende from
you.. In my younger, handsomer days, I dressed like you....My dark
optimism was learned from you...I learned how to seduce
women from you...I learned to appreciate, honor and respect women from
you... This can't be true... you couldn't have left us today... you
shaped so much of me when I was young...You taught me how to be a
gentlemen... and more importantly a gentle man. Bless you Leonard... Thank you for your words.... Rest well old teacher......but no... please no.
(When I discovered Leonard in the 80's there were very few copies of
his two novels, Beautiful Losers and The Favorite Game available. My
college "Leonard friend" Tony Ferlito managed to find the first one,
Beautiful Losers through interlibrary loan from god knows where. But
the loan was like only for two weeks, and we knew that we wouldn't both
be able to get through it in such a short time... so we torn... should
we just steal it or what? This was Leonard's rare novel. We couldn't let
it go... so instead we spent hours (and I really don't want to think
about how much it cost at 4 cents a page) xeroxing ourselves each a
copy, and painstaking laying out and gluing the sheets together into
book form, then binding them together fittingly with cardboard and black
tape. I remember having that book for years, re-reading it until it
dissolved.... Luckily years later I found reprints... which now I no
longer have.)
That's love and dedication. I consider myself a cohen fan but had no idea he wrote novels. I have to check this out.
Michael
Michael I like your soliloquy. I read all the poems in my twenties and now I am reading "Beautiful Losers".
I should also mention that I live in Montreal after coming here to go to school and graduating and deciding I love this city too much to leave it. I live within walking distance of his home and went to pay my respects...and to leave a guitar pick (I really need to practice more)...
He isn't gone...
He will always be with us...
Selah
Oh my god!!!! This is so cool!!!I love the parts about you guys xeroxing your ow copies!!!! Thats hilarious and awesome. Keep it up my friend!!!
beautiful tribute, your words
I am a 2004 born kid and quite randomly I found this God of a man and his music. I thank all my stars for making me discover him. It pains my heart that not even one person of my generation knows about him and his masterpieces. This song of his is my absolute favourite and the melody of this song just wrenches my heart. Rip you beautiful soul. You were a legend, Cohen. ♥
You could say that to my niece -- born about the same time you were! Glad you found this Zen master's music and his poetry! I spent my youth listening to him a lot! Try Sixto Rodrigues too, and find out his story of anonymity and recent rediscovery! Bon voyage, for your journey into music.
I am 1997 and I am a big fan of this pure artist
2002 and I thank God every single day that I randomly stumbled across his music one day... he has ruined music for me tho lol, no one will ever be as good as he was:(❤️
I Am also born in 2004 and a huge fan! I actually have a tattoo of leonard’s drawing for his song “the goal”. I’m watching this video late this rainy evening and really like reading you’re comment. There are more of us out there ✌🏼.

This rearangement is the best. The original one is like the song about the letter. This is th letter it self. This is more reall. I can feel what the man from the song feel when he write the letter. It is hard to explain.

god bless lc.
What a superb performance. I am learning it at the moment for piano. No a correction. I can already play it, I am however learning to make it sound as emotional as Leonard makes it.
I cry everytime I hear this and especially this performance.. Look at those eyes, that face, its almost like at times it feels like he's standing next to his dead friend and reciting him this letter both as a triumph and painful retribution and at times it seems like for the joy of others, the joy of his wife, the joy of his friend, or the joy of an imaginary third force, he steps back in all humility and recites this letter from far away, surrounded by water and the breeze, stands alone, whispering to the breeze the words of this letter/this confession/this closure.. There was none like him and there wont ever be anyone else like leonard cohen.. A true masterpiece.. you fill my heart Sir Cohen with wondrous excitement and comforting pain.. I love you..
I am stunned that I hear a French accent here, which I never detected before. For 50 years I didn't realize that! ☺☺
"بارانی آبی معروف" یکی از شناخته شده ترین ترانه های لئونارد کوئن است که در سومین آلبومش (Songs of Love and Hate / ترانههای عشق و نفرت) جای گرفت و در سال 1971 منتشر شد.

I still don't know what to do without him
“You treated her to a flake of your life, and when she came back she was nobody’s wife.” An iceberg line if there ever was one.

How can one not like Cohen? I have been listening to him for over 40 years and it's new Everytime. 😊
Farewell Leonard. This is one of my favourite ever songs. Thank you for your incredible talent.
What a genius poet singer-songwriter. Thank-you Canada.
The first time I heard this song, I fell in love with Leonard Cohen. L. Cohen is the only musician who can reduce me to tears and goosebumps and sit back in awe at his amazing lyrics, delivery, and music. Everybody makes such a big deal about his current age and I don't know why. His voice is gruffer but he is even more talented than he ever was. For you newcomers, welcome. These words have haunted me for decades. I will never stop listening to him and believing in him. Such a gentleman!

Just found out that he died. I followed him for 23 years. It all started with Peter, Paul and Mary which lead me to Bob Dylan and John Prine. After I found the genres of Folk and Folk Rock and then Americana I landed on Leonard Cohen and Judy Collins and then Jeff Buckley and his father. Cohen was one of the best songwriters of all time. Only was able to see him on television. RIP
My good lord…when was this recorded? Hauntingly stunning!
Seventies or Eighties probably.
Impresionante, bello, dulce y contundente. Que persona mas completa y grande. Desde siempre y hasta siempre, Leonard Cohen!
I'm so sad tonight, Leonard, you will be missed by many who listened to your words and music and found hope and solace.

I lived with you in the supernatural shoebox in Northwood England with Rick Smith and Steve Comfort back in 1983. Your songs, which I fell to sleep with every night, have enhanced my life from that time until until now. Thank you Leonard.
Mein lieblings song vom ihm... 🎸RIP..leonard cohen..⚘️
This song actually reminds of the 1970s when in my opinion Dianetics reached its zenith in popularity and acceptability. Leonard Cohen's reference to
asking the guy whole stole his wife "did you ever go clear" is a very suggestive of someone who is a deeply involved longtime Dianetics practitioner. Those were interesting times before I could communicate like this.
Just stopping by because Conner in Succession murdered it 😂
It's four in the morning, the end of December
I'm writing you now just to see if you're better
New York is cold, but I like where I'm living
There's music on Clinton Street all through the evening. .
1st time I Heard this song I Was amazed and touched and I Heard it for many many times but seeing him performing this masterpiece like that brought tears to my eyes , never in my life have I experienced such emotion from a song !! RIP L. Cohen you magnificent creature , thank you for this and everything
L'intonation du début pleine d'emotions comme on pourrait deviner et ce morceau de saxo qui dévore la fin de la chanson est unique...
Very many years ago in the mid-seventies, I was given a ticket for a concert ( at the Plymouth Odean) to be performed by an up and coming but still obscure musician. Best concert I ever went to.
Astounding!!!!!!!!! One of my all-time favourite Cohen tunes!!!!!!! Never saw this before!!!!!! Thanks for posting!!!!!! RIP Leonard Cohen
This live version is so haunting, I love it so much
Leonard Cohen gets deep into your soul, just like an old raincoat...
This masterpiece is truly one of the best songs I ever heard ! Thank you so much Mr Cohen for being on our planet 🙏
It's wonderful to see how loved he was, farewell leni, you meant something to everyone, somehow x
Saoirse Rosenstock Hi Saoirse, delighted with your appreciation of Leonard and as you say he meant something to everyone no matter what age, just loaned to us to do the Lord's work, and now it is done he is home. Hallelujah!!
it's crazy how many songs I search on youtube that I think they are from other artists and I get Leonard Cohen
He still scoops the light into the dark corners and raises our hearts into the beauty of beyond.
so long and goodnight Leni...
"...living, for nothing..."
"...thin..."
"..torn at the shoulder.."
"..in my way..."
"...forgive..."
"...your enemies....."
"..I miss you..."
If there is any musician who has ever touched my emotional button, that is you, Mr. Cohen. Your beautiful poetry, music, humor and spirituality is unmatchable! R.I.P, Mr. Cohen.
Then with the flick of a lightswich he was gone from us and our emotional feelings were plunged into darkness.RIP L.Cohen.
I absolutely love the way L. Cohen turns away from the Mic and for the Saxophone player's cue -- obvious respect and he knows that we're all going to enjoy this Sax Solo!🎷🌺
What a remarkable talent we lost when Mr. Cohen passed. I will listen to you the rest of my days.
RIP, we love you still and forever!
amazing my first time hearing this song......it touched my heart, I missed an old dear friend and it made my cry and cry !!!!!!!!!!!
I was lucky to attend three of his concerts. I've been listening to him since I was a teenager in the 1970's
Nienawidzę czekolady - to w związku z nachalną reklamą atakującą mnie od pierwszego zerknięcia na stronę!!!!! Nienawidzę reklam, zwłaszcza tak agresywnych!
Last night I performed a cover of "Dance Me To The End Of Love" for some friends. I am simply heartbroken over this loss. Mr Cohen, you changed my life. For that, I will be always in your debt. My heart and condolences go out to the family. RIP, Sir.
Indeed, who would make a house in the middle of a desert? A crazy person.
My heart is raining tears. Through this great artist's music and poetry I was able to work out the pain and suffering of my tumultuous teen years. Bless you LC and thank you for leaving us so much!
Farewell Leonard.
His lyrics always speak of deep things to me and even now they make me wonder what he was trying to convey. Sometimes I get it and sometimes not so much!
La partie instrumentale est magnifique.Avec la voie de Léonard ça devient la perfection
2016 - you can stop now. You are officially the worse year ever.
blueprairiedog I know, right? Prince, Bowie and Cohen all in one stroke.
All I can do now is listen and dream.
Cohen
Oh, my God...
Oh, the tears I have every time I hear this song...
My brother, my killer.
Хлядачи вна мисце и слухають уважно
Bless you old man. Your voice and wisdom are forever remembered.
