3 Things I Didn't Like About This Movie: 3) The fact that young kids with maybe two years combat experience took out a bunch of aliens with freaking LASER GUNS easily without a scratch on them 2) The queen deciding she's a Godzilla monster who chose a school bus full of kids as her opponent for some freaking reason????? 1) Not a single meaningful character death that made me tear up like in the original. I legit was crying when someone that didn't seem that important to the plot such as the president's wife ended up dying, all we needed for this scene to hit us in the heartstrings was for the president to come back to let his curious daughter know that "Yes. Mommy is sleeping." The daughter knew by her father's tone that her mother was gone, which broke several people's hearts watching. Heck, they could've made the mother and Will Smith's character's wife who was originally a stripper in the first movie have an emotional death scene, since you know...SHE FREAKING STRIPPED TO GIVE HER SON A GOOD LIFE! But instead, the directors pretty much gave up and just gave her a scene where she fell to her death. Kind of a lackluster way to treat a deserving character.

After constantly being seriously unimpressed and meanwhile wondering why they are using young 16 year old kids as pilots, I realized that the caliber of the story equals that of a cartoon. That's why they had to use kids as the ones "who saved the day". This is a kids movie.
As far as I know, it was a serious display of stupidity, misjudgement and manipulation. People talking about freedom or slavery of "the great Britain" are hillarious.
The more I thought of this movie, the more I hated it. I agree with everything you said. They were passing the torch to terrible, underdeveloped, characters. The UN guy was annoying, and pointless. The African warlord was cool, but his only purpose was to tell them to shoot them in the back.... and why did they even waste time with Africa? So they could SEE a distress beacon? (and to pick up the warlord) They could have left out that WHOLE scene, and used the time to develop the new characters. And can we stop with stupid countdowns? Multiple times, they would count down from 5 seconds! Nothing was charging/aligning/loading. They just count down, waiting to get destroyed before it could do anything. Just hit the god damn button! And why is there a shield ONLY on the area 51 base? Not where the President is hidden. Not on the new White House. Not to mention, apparently only the US can stop aliens... again. After the first attack, there should have been a world defense team... not independent militaries This movie had no charm, and wasn't even good for the explosions.
Oh, and I love how they can monitor how far they've drilled toward the core of the earth. And am I to assume that the molten core of the earth is incapable of breaking through the last few feet of material, between the drill and the core? And yeah, what is the point of the kids/bus? There were so many issues with this film. We saw we had laser guns but the secret service around the president in the bunker didn't have them when they knew they were being attacked. OK maybe you can say that we couldn't miniaturize the device enough to make a handgun but I'm pretty sure in a real presidential bunker you would have a whole armoury full of assault rifle sized weapons. How were the pilots able to fly the ships out of the mothership? We saw that the aliens in their battle armour were much taller and larger than us and we know they wear it when inside the cockpit from the first film. Yes you can say that will smith and goldblum flew one out of area 51 in the original but that had been there for 30-40 years by that point and they had human flight seats in there so its fair to assume it had been adapted for us. When the ship first attacked we got a nice graphic of the earth defence satellites looking like two perpendicular rings. The mother ship fired one burst of 5 shots and apparently the entire network had been taken out even those on the far side of the planet. They tried to contrive as many ways as possible to make us look weak in this movie but they went about it the wrong way. They made us look potentially effective but incredibly incompetent instead of the more realistic view from the first film when we're ruthlessly efficient but woefully outmatched.Its a 4 from me
Oh and one last thing. Why did we keep all the prisoners in area 51 inside their battle suits? We saw that at least partially opening the suit didn't kill the alien inside and in this film you saw how pathetic and helpless they were when completely exposed. Surely we would keep prisoners in that state? How do we feed them in their suits? Its been 20 years we must have worked it out. Maybe we drop a cow in their velociraptor style :)Anyway just so many interesting bits missed or not fleshed out enough

Yeah, in the first movie the aliens were described like locusts. They invade an area, wipe out the population, use up all resources, and then move on to the next area. That was there only motivation. Their desire to consume everything vs our desire to live. That was what the war was about in the first movie, plain and simple. It was very effective. It's so retarded that they added their want for our fuel as motivation when the first movie was very clear what they wanted. How there were some people who didn't realize this would be a flop of a sequel is beyond me.
But surely consuming EVERY valuable resource would include fuel. Does not sound added on at all. Also, the world communication was down to the point of using morse code. We had no idea what alot of the other aliens around the world were doing in any specific detail. It would have took time to rebuild before we discovered the ful extent of an entire world invasion.

The first movie compared them too locusts which completely swarm an area, overwhelm it and take over. They had some methods to their madness but at the end of the day it was all or nothing for the aliens. They intended to completely disable us and then overwhelm is and wipe us out to make themselves at home. It just seemed too methodical for the type of aliens that were described by Bill Paulman's character in the first movie when he had insight to what their motives were directly from the alien.

I grew up watching Independence Day every year. I can't remember all the characters' names, but I really like this movie. It's a lot of mindless fun, which is what you should expect out of an Independence Day movie. Some characters didn't need to be there, like at all. But I really liked pretty much anyone from the first film, except Dylan, and David's dad didn't need to be there. I love the action in this movie, awesome dogfights. And the Kaiju Queen battle was just epic!
+Drew Just the feel of adventure and discovery with that amazing score throughout the film is just amazing. The characters are the best out of any other Emmerich characters too. For me it's the only Emmerich film that feels genuine with a good story, the rest are so artificial and 1 dimensional really.

Austin Putnam I don't think it's the core but its definitely the most popular. The other stuff would include movie reviews and some gameplay. The reason he wasn't able to pull off many full reviews was because some many triple A games came out at the same time and he was away for 2 weeks.
for me it was though. We have different experiences in life so it's understandable we'll not see every movie in the same way :) For me the action was boring, acting superbad, story uninteresting and predictable, no suspense, no drama, no stakes, pacing was wonky, music forgettable, scinematography subar, doalig uninteresting etc.
I haven't seen it but I'm guessing unless the aliens actually introduce themselves (which I don't think they would since they don't speak) probably not. A nickname maybe but their proper name, probably not.

I hated seeing Makia with Liam. In the first movie it looked like Will Smith's son was going to be the love interest for the president's daughter. But in this movie she falls for Liam's Hemsworth because he is cuter to women. It ruins the theme of uniting humans beyond differences.
The "third alien faction" sort of/almost satisfied blue balls that were given to me decades ago when, in the film "V", they sent a distress call to "enemies of the reptile aliens" and then that branch of the story was never mentioned again.
The Independence Day PS1 game was like the mission in Star Fox 64 where you fight the mother-ship that's constantly spitting out alien ships to fight, even down to exploding the exposed core and everything.
Does no one remember how the first movie made is super clear there WERE NO MORE ALIENS? "They're like locusts. They're moving from planet to planet. Their whole civilization. After they've consumed every natural resource they move on. And we're next." No?
The change from 'lets band together and defend ourselves' to 'lets follow them home and kick their asses, dragging the war out' might just reflect an attitude shift in the USA over the twenty years between movies. It's how we've been fighting wars in real life. We always *talk* about defending ourselves, but our open warfare is never on home soil, and we tend to chomp at the bit to go to war in the first place.
One of the biggest issues I see, just from the previews alone (I haven't watched the film yet), is the immensely huge mothership entrance Earth's atmosphere. That would never, ever happen. A ship that size was built in space (like those in the Star Trek universe) and only operate in space. They would never be constructed to enter a gravity well of a planet, let alone get down close to the ground of a world or land. They'd stay up in geo-stationary orbit and send down craft from there. So, showing it do so in the movie is utter BS.
They just need to add: - 2 col snipers with plasma lance wearing spider suit - 2 col specialist with gremlin 3. - 1 mag psychic with wraith suit - that African warlord should wear the war suit loaded with shredstorm missile. - end the movie with "..you have clearly outdone yourself commander"
Roland said they were going to do a sequel back then actually, but the rights/license got away from them before they could; they basically said there were too many chefs in the kitchen and so it became a series instead. They want to reboot it now because they said a sequel this much later doesn't make sense per the original story they wrote, so it will be a brand new TRILOGY with the films being back-to-back-to-back for the story to make sense, and that movie studios don't think in terms of trilogies for big franchises like that anymore anyways, that they want their own Cinematic Universes for potential spin-offs, etc, (obviously like Marvel, etc), so that's why it's getting a trilogy to start with (to give us enough content for them to launch stuff off of). Unless of course, it bombs, then there won't be any more Stargate movies ever again lol.

There was NO PACING in this movie. The first one is this slow, ominous progression - they come toward earth, they show up mysteriously in the sky, they hover over the cities, they WAIT, they open up, they attack. It is the most stunning depiction, in my opinion, of an alien invasion ever put to film. This one, you start with this idiotic flying through the galaxy, the ship just shows up and people talk about how it's bigger than the last one (seriously, they say it like 3 times, with no emotion), it lands in a sequence that resembles a showreel more than a scene, and nothing happens. So awful.
When the Alien ball said the humans would be the lead of the resistance (possibly more alien races), it made me think of mass effect, allies vs the bad aliens (reapers)

The more I thought of this movie, the more I hated it. I agree with everything you said. They were passing the torch to terrible, underdeveloped, characters. The UN guy was annoying, and pointless. The African warlord was cool, but his only purpose was to tell them to shoot them in the back.... and why did they even waste time with Africa? So they could SEE a distress beacon? (and to pick up the warlord) They could have left out that WHOLE scene, and used the time to develop the new characters.
And can we stop with stupid countdowns? Multiple times, they would count down from 5 seconds! Nothing was charging/aligning/loading. They just count down, waiting to get destroyed before it could do anything. Just hit the god damn button!
And why is there a shield ONLY on the area 51 base? Not where the President is hidden. Not on the new White House.
Not to mention, apparently only the US can stop aliens... again. After the first attack, there should have been a world defense team... not independent militaries

I'd give the movie a 4
There were so many issues with this film. We saw we had laser guns but the secret service around the president in the bunker didn't have them when they knew they were being attacked. OK maybe you can say that we couldn't miniaturize the device enough to make a handgun but I'm pretty sure in a real presidential bunker you would have a whole armoury full of assault rifle sized weapons. How were the pilots able to fly the ships out of the mothership? We saw that the aliens in their battle armour were much taller and larger than us and we know they wear it when inside the cockpit from the first film. Yes you can say that will smith and goldblum flew one out of area 51 in the original but that had been there for 30-40 years by that point and they had human flight seats in there so its fair to assume it had been adapted for us. When the ship first attacked we got a nice graphic of the earth defence satellites looking like two perpendicular rings. The mother ship fired one burst of 5 shots and apparently the entire network had been taken out even those on the far side of the planet. They tried to contrive as many ways as possible to make us look weak in this movie but they went about it the wrong way. They made us look potentially effective but incredibly incompetent instead of the more realistic view from the first film when we're ruthlessly efficient but woefully outmatched.Its a 4 from me
Oh and one last thing. Why did we keep all the prisoners in area 51 inside their battle suits?
We saw that at least partially opening the suit didn't kill the alien inside and in this film you saw how pathetic and helpless they were when completely exposed. Surely we would keep prisoners in that state?

Yeah, in the first movie the aliens were described like locusts. They invade an area, wipe out the population, use up all resources, and then move on to the next area. That was there only motivation. Their desire to consume everything vs our desire to live. That was what the war was about in the first movie, plain and simple. It was very effective. It's so retarded that they added their want for our fuel as motivation when the first movie was very clear what they wanted. How there were some people who didn't realize this would be a flop of a sequel is beyond me.
I expected it. And I wont spend MY money on it. If a friend wants to, sure. But I'm not paying them back for. it. This movie is not worth it.
But surely consuming EVERY valuable resource would include fuel. Does not sound added on at all. Also, the world communication was down to the point of using morse code. We had no idea what alot of the other aliens around the world were doing in any specific detail. It would have took time to rebuild before we discovered the ful extent of an entire world invasion.

The first movie compared them too locusts which completely swarm an area, overwhelm it and take over. They had some methods to their madness but at the end of the day it was all or nothing for the aliens. They intended to completely disable us and then overwhelm is and wipe us out to make themselves at home. It just seemed too methodical for the type of aliens that were described by Bill Paulman's character in the first movie when he had insight to what their motives were directly from the alien.

I grew up watching Independence Day every year. I can't remember all the characters' names, but I really like this movie. It's a lot of mindless fun, which is what you should expect out of an Independence Day movie. Some characters didn't need to be there, like at all. But I really liked pretty much anyone from the first film, except Dylan, and David's dad didn't need to be there. I love the action in this movie, awesome dogfights. And the Kaiju Queen battle was just epic!

The Independence Day PS1 game was like the mission in Star Fox 64 where you fight the mother-ship that's constantly spitting out alien ships to fight, even down to exploding the exposed core and everything.

The change from 'lets band together and defend ourselves' to 'lets follow them home and kick their asses, dragging the war out' might just reflect an attitude shift in the USA over the twenty years between movies. It's how we've been fighting wars in real life. We always *talk* about defending ourselves, but our open warfare is never on home soil, and we tend to chomp at the bit to go to war in the first place.

One of the biggest issues I see, just from the previews alone (I haven't watched the film yet), is the immensely huge mothership entrance Earth's atmosphere. That would never, ever happen. A ship that size was built in space (like those in the Star Trek universe) and only operate in space. They would never be constructed to enter a gravity well of a planet, let alone get down close to the ground of a world or land. They'd stay up in geo-stationary orbit and send down craft from there. So, showing it do so in the movie is utter BS.

Roland said they were going to do a sequel back then actually, but the rights/license got away from them before they could; they basically said there were too many chefs in the kitchen and so it became a series instead. They want to reboot it now because they said a sequel this much later doesn't make sense per the original story they wrote, so it will be a brand new TRILOGY with the films being back-to-back-to-back for the story to make sense, and that movie studios don't think in terms of trilogies for big franchises like that anymore anyways, that they want their own Cinematic Universes for potential spin-offs, etc, (obviously like Marvel, etc), so that's why it's getting a trilogy to start with (to give us enough content for them to launch stuff off of). Unless of course, it bombs, then there won't be any more Stargate movies ever again lol.

There was NO PACING in this movie. The first one is this slow, ominous progression - they come toward earth, they show up mysteriously in the sky, they hover over the cities, they WAIT, they open up, they attack. It is the most stunning depiction, in my opinion, of an alien invasion ever put to film. This one, you start with this idiotic flying through the galaxy, the ship just shows up and people talk about how it's bigger than the last one (seriously, they say it like 3 times, with no emotion), it lands in a sequence that resembles a showreel more than a scene, and nothing happens. So awful.
When the Alien ball said the humans would be the lead of the resistance (possibly more alien races), it made me think of mass effect, allies vs the bad aliens (reapers)
